E komo mai, Welcome!

                                 Aloha!

Welcome to HIGenWeb Kalawao County.

Kalawao County is located on the island of Molokai on the Kalaupapa Peninsula. Conde Nast Traveler did a story on Kalawao County called "The Surprising History of Kalaupapa, Hawaii" on 6 May 2013.  It is a short story that explains the why of Kalawao County.

Latest find on the National Park Service website:  Kalaupapa National Historical Park / Molokai, Hawaii.  historic resource study. Exile in Paradise.  Genealogy is all about learning about who our ancestors were and to tell the story about what their lives were like in relations to people, places, and things.

In a few years when the last of the original leprosy patients is gone, the state plans to turn the settlement over to the National Park Service.  At which time, Kalawao County will mostlikely cease to exist.

This is not to say that the peninsula does not have a long history of Hawaiian occupation.  Read About Kalawao County here.  Only in recent history did the peninsula become isolated because it became the home of patients with Hansen's Disease.
