Raymond Jackson Raymond Uriah Jackson, 97, died today, Oct. 8, at Moran Manor Nursing Center. He was born Dec. 5, 1901, to Joseph and Ada Holeman Jackson in Carroll County, Ark. He was raised in Bronson. He married Bertha Viola Colgin on Feb. 7, 1923. They lived north of Bronson. They had 11 children. She died in 1969. He then married Nelie Alice Fisher in 1970. She died in 1992. He was an oil driller, oil pumper and farmer. He had lived at Mildred for 11 years with his daughter, Jessie. He is survived by three sons, Darrell and Paul of Mound City and LeRoy of Blue Mound; five daughters, Marybell Pruitt of Aurora, Colo., Velvia Pearman of McPherson, Evelyn Larkey of Chanute, Jessie Jefferis of Mildred and Joan Stewart of Coffeyville; 32 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Two sons, Gilbert and Dorwin, a daughter, Verlin Frame, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur, Oliver and Alva Jackson, and four sisters, Alma, Marie, Inez and Anna, died earlier. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Moran United Methodist Church. The Rev. Fred Darbonnowill will officiate. Burial will be in Bronson died Monday, Nov. 8, following a short illness. In December 1934, he married Mildred Kuntz. They lived in several communities in Missouri before moving to Iola in 1953. He is survived by a son, Larry Hendrix, and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Brundage Hendrix, Nixa; two grandchildren, Timothy Hendrix and Debra Cummings; four great-grandchildren, Timothy Lee Hendrix, Rusty Cummings, Andrew Hendrix and Shelby Hendrix; and two sisters, Laura Westoff and Viola George of Lawrence. His wife, Mildred, two brothers, Charlie and Edwin, and two sisters, Golda Wood and Noma Solmon, died earlier. Randy Sherwood Randy L. Sherwood of Wichita, brother of Dennis Sherwood of Iola, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Wichita. He was 44. She was born Oct. 11, 1922, at Dekalb County, Mo., the daughter of Gerry R. and Freda Law Ferguson. She had been an accounting supervisor and secretary for Eby Construction Co. of Wichita for 26 years and had been secretary for the First United Methodist Church in Yates Center for the past 12 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church at Chanute. On Feb. 12, 1944, she married Walter V. Hearn at Corpus Christi, Texas. He survives, as do a son, Thomas A. of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Trisha A. Testorff of Platte City, Mo.; a brother, Robert L. Ferguson of Columbia, Mo.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Chanute. Burial will be in Yates Center died Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Allen County Hospital at the age of 94. He was born Oct. 22, 1905, on a farm north of Piqua to John and Kate O'Donnell Heffern. He served in the U.S. Navy. On Nov. 19, 1930, he married Rosanna O. Dupras. They lived in Massachusetts and Maine before moving to California in 1936. He worked in the naval shipyards at San Francisco for 26 years. She died in December 1969. On Sept. 5, 1970, he married Kathryn Boone Williams. They lived in Florida for eight years and then in California for six years. In 1984, they moved to New Hampshire. She died in 1993. Shortly after her death he moved to Yates Center. He was a former member of St. Martin's Catholic Church at Piqua and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Yates Center at the time of his death. He is survived by two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A son, Norman, died earlier. Marjorie Evenson Marjorie June Evenson, 64, of Humboldt died Monday, July 3, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. She was born May 26, 1936, at Watertown, N.Y., the daughter of George and Myrtle Spicer Norris. She lived in Watertown until the age of 8. She then moved with her family to Neodesha. She was graduated from Neodesha High School in 1954. She was a member of the Humboldt First Baptist Church and belonged to the Virginia Circle, American Baptist Women's Ministries and White Cross. She had held office positions in all the groups. She was also secretary of the Gleaners Sunday school class. She was a homemaker and enjoyed listening to her radio while spending time with her cat. She also enjoyed sewing, crafts and being with friends. On June 6, 1955, she married Robert G. Evenson at Neodesha. He is deceased. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn L. Baxter, and her husband, Terry, of Kansas City, Mo., Sharon L. Shoop, and her husband, Raymond, of Cherryvale, and Charlene L. Evenson of Humboldt; and a son, Carl Robert, and his wife, Linda, of Trinidad, Colo; a sister, Doris Birdsong, of Cherryvale; a brother, Delbert Norris of Neodesha; four stepsisters, Jenny Burns of Abilene, Mary Smith of Florida, Joan Council of Neodesha and Jeanie Jacobs of Florida; and five grandchildren. Chavez of Iola died Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was 79. He was born May 30, 1921, in Mexico, the son of Marcial and Irene Chavez. He grew up at Bassett and attended Washington School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Chavez worked for LeHigh Portland Cement Company in Iola until it closed. He later worked for Beechner Construction until his retirement. On Dec. 31, 1947, he married Alberta "Bert" Serrano. They made their home in Iola. She died in 1990. Survivors include a son, Jesse Robert of Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Sylvia Comer of Iola and Mary Queckboerner of Ocala, Fla.; two brothers, Joe "Benny" of Howard and Pete of Wichita; three sisters, Florentina Perez of Iola, Alice Quearry of Branson, Mo., and Simona Doffing of Wellington; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. They made their home in California, where she worked in a defense plant during World War II. They later moved to Oregon and operated a berry farm. They returned to Kansas in 1948. She ran the Towntalk Bread store in Iola before they moved to Chanute. He died in 1979. Her last move was to Windsor Place in Iola. She is survived by a son, James Weeks, and his wife, Joyce, Iola; five daughters, Mrs. James (Patsy) McGowan of Iola, Mrs. Charles (Peggy) Carnahan of Gas, Mrs. Joseph (Laura) Turner of Chanute, Mrs. H.L. She grew up at Pittsburg and attended Pittsburg schools. She married William "Bill" Masquelier in August 1953 at Pittsburg. He preceded her in death Oct. 7, 1973. Mrs. Masquelier moved to Iola where she made her home for more than 20 years. She later moved to Decatur, Ill., where she lived for 12 years. She moved to Pittsburg in 1988, and then moved in 1991 to Springfield, where she lived for the past 10 years. She was a member of the Cherry Court Garden Club at Springfield, and of the auxiliary staff at St. John's Health Center. She was a friend of the library, drove for the Council of the Blind, and was active in many other organizations. Survivors include a son, David Wayne Masquelier of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; two brothers, Wayne Remington of Fort Scott, and Bob Remington of Pittsburg; a sister, Helen Dyer of Russellville, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews. She was a farm wife, assisting her husband in running the family farm and raising their children. She attended the Kincaid First Baptist Church, where she played the piano and organ for more than 20 years and participated in a variety of ways with the vacation Bible schools. She was an avid photographer, chronicling the life of her family and farm. She liked to read, play and listen to music and traveling. She devoted much of her time to researching family genealogy. She recently began quilting. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; two sons, Max of Kincaid and Joel of Lebo; two daughters, Monique Litherland of Topeka and Myla Ma of Hong Kong; and three granddaughters, Dasha Watt, Brittney Sprague and Erika Litherland. 'Bob' Hill Jr. Robert Wesley "Bob" Hill Jr. 76, died Tuesday, Nov. 27 [2001]. He liked to build things, which included his first house, models and a boat that he built in his living room. His father retired in 1971. He liked to fish and spend time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Iola Elks Lodge. On Oct. 17, 1980, he married Deborah R. Stephens in Miami, Okla. She survives, as do two sons, Patrick and Brent of Iola; a daughter Stephanie Gregg, of Iola; two stepsons, Robert W. Brown of Humboldt and Kevin Brown of Jasper, Mo.; his mother, Sue Long, of Iola; a sister, Linda Martin, of Lawrence; a half-brother, Jim Long, of rural Afton, Okla.; and nine grandchildren. His father, Larry C. Long, died in 1995. Nancy O'Keefe Former Iola resident Nancy Bagnall O'Keefe, 61, of Chicago, Ill., died Monday, Feb. 4, in Chicago. She was born in Iola to Mr. and Mrs. James W. Bagnall Sr. She is a veteran of the U.S. Army. While in the service she was stationed in San Antonio, Texas. An infant sister, Venita Marie, died earlier. Friday, August 9, 2002 'Chuck' Menzie Sr. Charles P. "Chuck" Menzie Sr. of rural LaHarpe died Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Fredonia Regional Hospital at the age of 77. He was born Feb. 22, 1925, in Wichita to Grover C. and Mabelle Glover Menzie. He was a 1943 graduate of Iola High School. He attended Iola Junior college and Pittsburg State College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed by M&M Packing in Iola after returning from the service. On Oct. 28, 1950, he married Shirley McGrew in Garnett. They made their home in Wichita where he worked for Cessna. After returning to Iola he worked in the laboratory at LeHigh Portland Cement Company until it closed. At the time of his retirement he was working at the county landfill. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and American Legion in Iola and the LaHarpe Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife of the home; a son, Pat and his wife, Debbie, of rural LaHarpe; three daughters, Debbie Curry and her husband, Larry, of Iola, Cheryl Smith of Andover and Shelly Christian and her husband, Michael, of Mulvane; 11 grandchildren; and two granddaughters-in-law. An infant grandson, Flint Menzie, and two sisters, Myrna Martin and Iverd Cornell, died earlier. The body has been cremated. Michael Dennison Former Iola resident Michael Thomas Dennison, 51, of Corsicana, Texas, died Tuesday, May 21, in Arlington, Texas, after a short illness with lung cancer. He was born Oct. 8, 1950, in Kansas City, Mo. He grew up in Iola. He was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Marguerite Dennison. He was a 1968 graduate of Iola High School. In 1969 he joined the Peace Corps. He was working as a truck driver at the time of his death. He was planning on attending a school for pharmacology. He was a longtime member of the Sons of the American Legion of Corsicana. Sean Lee, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, at her daughter's home in Monterey, Calif. She is also survived by her husband, Chai Sin; two additional sons, Romulus Lee and his wife, Ginna of Seattle, Wash., and Edwin Dong-Oo Lee and his wife, Mi-Young of South Korea; a daughter-in-law, the former Brenda Johnson Lee of Roswell, N.M.; four daughters, Mignon Higgins of Monterey, Calif., Zenia Lee and her husband, Curt Wood of Lawrence, Miienda Lee-Dean and her husband, Stuart Dean of Montclair, N.J., and Adela Fleming and her husband, Allan of Kansas City, Mo.; and 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first child, George. She was born in Hamhung, Korea (now part of North Korea) on April 13, 1921, the daughter of Yu Hong-Sun and Yu Ok-Sun. Her father was governor of Kangwon province. She graduated from Yongsaeng Girls High School, a missionary run school in Hamhung, attended Nihon Womens University in Tokyo, and graduated from Ewha Womens College in Seoul with a degree in music. On May 25, 1945, she married Chai Sin Lee. In 1948 she and her husband came to the United States to study music, eventually settling in Kansas City. She attended Lindenwood College and later received her degree in voice from the University of Kansas City, Conservatory of Music, which is now part of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She and her husband were among the first Koreans to settle in Kansas City and were founding members of the Korean American Society in Kansas City and the Kansas City Korean Church. Friday, December 6, 2002 Violet Bauer Violet Genevieve Bauer, 94, of rural Elsmore died Thursday, Dec. 5, at Allen County Hospital. She was born Feb. 8, 1908, on the family farm southwest of Elsmore to Walter and Anna Samp. She was graduated from Savonbrug High School in 1925. She attended the University of Kansas and earned her teaching certificate in 1927. She taught in rural schools from 1928 to 1938, including Salem, Morehead, Scotland and Savonburg. One Aug. 25, 1934, she married J. Ralph Bauer. They made their home in rural Elsmore on the family farm where she was born and spent the rest of her life. He died in 1997. She was an avid gardener, active community member and a good seamstress and cook. She was a member of the First Christian Church at Savonburg, but attended the Temple Baptist Church in Erie in later years. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Bauer of Elsmore and Mary Ann Magnuson and her husband, Dr. Max Patterson of Iola; three sons, Don and his wife, Donna, of Iola, Duane and his wife, Donajean, of Fort Scott, and Darrell and his wife, Linda, of Erie; a sister-in-law, Doris Bauer of Elsmore; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. They made their home in the Iola and Gas areas. In the 1930s she worked at the Ideal Laundry and in the 1940s and 1950s she cared for elderly people along with children in her home. She liked flowers and to garden. Mr. Geer died in 1985. She is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews. Chapman of Tucson, Ariz., and two sisters, Cleo Moore of Wichita and Mae Melton of Wynnewood, Okla. He was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Frisco, Okla., to George Washington and Estelle Duncan Chapman. He grew up in Guthrie, Okla., but in his mid-teens he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and lived at the 101 Boy's Ranch in Ponca City, Okla., until he reached manhood. He was married to Lucille Morrison of Coalgate, Okla., for 48 years before her death in 1989. He served in World War II with the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment where he was wounded in action in Germany and received a purple heart. He attended and completed training at the Wichita Barber College on the GI Bill and was the retired owner of the Bitting Building Barber Shop in downtown Wichita, where he worked for more than 50 years. He was a member of Westside Christian Church, Albert Pike Lodge No. 303, Golden Age Clubs of Wichita, and was a delegate to the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention. Wednesday April 16, 2003 'Speedy' Kennedy Duane "Speedy" Kennedy, 65, of Fort Scott died Tuesday, April 15, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. Mo. He was born Feb. 20, 1938, in Walker, Mo., the son of Lester and Ruby Scott Kennedy. He was a 1955 graduate of Nevada High School. He attended Fort Scott Community College. On Oct. 6, 1963, he married Irene Fink in Moran. He owned and operated the Nu Grill, White Grill and Kin-Fok's restaurants prior to his retirement. He was a 30-year member of Fort Scott's Elks Lodge No. 579. He received his nickname "Speedy" by driving his No. 13 purple stock car. His hobbies included owning and admiring classic cars, delivering food baskets to needy families at Christmas and spending time with his grandchildren. His wife survives, as do two daughters, Linda Lawrence, and her husband, Terry, and Cheryl Combs, and her husband, Mike, of Fort Scott; his mother, Ruby Kennedy of Deerfield, Mo.; a brother, Scott of Deerfield; a sister, Donnis Moore of Fair Grove, Mo.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; a nephew and two nieces. They made their home in Kincaid and then for a brief time in Wichita before returning to Kincaid. They moved to Iola in 1987. She survives, as do two sons, Kendall of Huntington, Ind., and Kim of Lima, Ohio; two daughters, Kendra Heimlich of Iola and Kay Jordan of Parkersburg, W.Va.; a brother, Harold of Pittsburg; a sister, Ruby Volz of Wichita; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Jesse and Noel, and a sister, Naomi Wright, died earlier. John Osborne John Perry Osborn of West Plains, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 30, at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was 62. The Elk County native was born July 17, 1941, to Lloyd Perry and Gladys Fay Kaiserling Osborn. His mother died when he was five. He was raised by his father and stepmother, Marvel Lewis Osborne. He attended grade school in Elk Falls and was graduated from Howard, Kan., High School in 1960. He served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Lee, Va., and Fort Ord, Calif. He returned to Kansas and worked for several years in agriculture prior to taking a position with Emerson Motors, a division of Emerson Electric Independence. He retired on a medical disability from Emerson several years ago and moved with his wife, Marian Sharp, to West Plains. She died in 1999. He was a member of Central Calvary Baptist Church in West Plains. Thursday, April 1, 2004 Marie Mauk Marie Mauk, 80, of LaHarpe died Wednesday, March 31, at her home. She was born April 7, 1923, in Chanute, the daughter of George and Maude Pistole Hobert. She grew up in Chanute. She moved to LaHarpe in 1937. She was graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1942. She worked for the LaHarpe Post Office from 1942 to 1958. She was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6324 Ladies Auxiliary. She had held an office position since 1946 and was the senior vice president of the organization. She was a long-time member of the Kansas Old-Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers. She served as secretary for the singing group for 26 years. On June 28, 1947, she married Russell Roy Mauk in Erie. They made their home in LaHarpe. He survives at Moran Manor; as do a daughter Janette Mauk, Pittsburg; a sister, Norma Troxel, Iola; and several nieces and nephews. Four brothers, Forest, Clarence, Woody and Eugene Hobert, and two sisters, Lissie Thurman and Cora "Connie" O'Farrell, died earlier. She was born Dec. 9, 1911, in Pearl, Ill., the daughter of Hallie B. and Nettie Opal Calvin Staley. The family moved to Mounds, Okla., when she was 5 and then to Mountain View, Mo. Her mother died when she was 9. Two years later the family moved to Amoret, Mo., and then to Worland, Mo. Her father died and she and her four brothers were separated and sent to different homes. The family Hart was staying with moved to Iola when she was 16. On Jan. 9, 1932, she married Vernon H. Hart. They made their home in the Iola area. They lived in the East Lawn Addition for 36 years. He died in 1989. In 1995 she moved to the Townhouse. She later lived with her son in Chanute before moving to Butler, Mo., where she was living with her granddaughter at the time of her death. She enjoyed yardwork. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iola for 55 years. She worked with the Allen County Hospital Auxiliary and on the election board. She was an active volunteer in Butler and was attending Calvary Baptist Church in Adrian, Mo. She is survived by a brother, Floyd Staley and his wife, Laura Lee, Oskaloosa, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Bill Hart and his wife, Ruth, Independence, Mo.; a grandson, Jeff Storrer and his wife, Diana, Iola; two granddaughters, Becky Settles and her husband, Jim, Butler, Mo., and Summer Hart, Ephrata, Wash.; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and two stepgrandchildren. An infant daughter, Saundra Sue, another daughter, Donna Storrer, and a great-grandson, Joshua Storrer, died earlier. Her sister's name was Gertrude Crooke. Dorothy Hawes Dorothy V. Hawes of Welda died today, April 1, at Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett. She was 91. She was born Sept. 10, 1913, in Kansas City, to John W. and Bessie May Harman Tuttle. She was a homemaker. She moved to Welda in 1969 from Kansas City. On Sept. 15, 1929, she married Lloy Hawes in Kansas City. He died in 1983. She is survived by two sons, Robert E., Kansas City, and John R., Welda; two daughters, Bonnie Rusk, Welda, and Betty Mayden, Liberty, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. Christerpher Wilhite Christerpher Wilhite, 26, of Iola died Wednesday, March 31, at Allen County Hospital in Iola. Franklin worked for many years as the custodian at the Humboldt post office and worked from her home sewing for many people throughout Humboldt. She was a member of the Poplar Grove Baptist Church and was the church secretary. She worked with Meals On Wheels. She was a member of the Vashti Chapter No. 60, Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include, a daughter, Jacqueline Mae Henderson, Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, Thomas Henry, Wichita, and Terence Phillip, Topeka; 10 grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and eight great-grandchildren. An infant child, Charles Franklin Jr., a brother, William Wood, and a sister, Emma Augusta Tinch, died earlier. Wednesday, June 2, 2004 Martha J. Noyes Martha J. Noyes of LaHarpe died Tuesday, June 1, at her home at the age of 66. She was born Feb. 23, 1938, in Ottawa, the daughter of Ivan and Lucy Noble Ball. She was graduated from Ottawa High School and then from nurse's school in Kansas City. On Jan. 10, 1959, she married Ronald L. Noyes in Ottawa. The couple lived in Kansas City, Garnett and Ottawa. She worked as a licensed practical nurse in hospitals and nursing homes in Garnett and Ottawa. The couple moved to LaHarpe in 2001. He died in 2002. She was a member of the Iola Elks Lodge. She is survived by two sons, Don, Welda, and Rick, LaHarpe, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels. The Rev. Friday, October 8, 2004 Elsie Henry Former Moran resident Elsie Wood Henry, 93, of Garnett, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Anderson County Hospital in Garnett. She was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Moran to Will and Mary Baker Wood. She was a telephone operator in Paola and Moran prior to her marriage. On April 30, 1930, she was married to Robert W. Henry in Garnett. He died in 1995. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanine Zentner and her husband, George, and Twyla Duryea, Garnett; two brothers, Carrell Baker, Chanute, and Clarence Wood, Salome, Ariz.; a sister, Lula Mow, Moses Lake, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
