Herbert H. Baker COLUMBUS -- Herbert H. Baker, 90, of Columbus, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Medicalodge of Columbus after an illness. He was born Sept. 29, 1908, at Dunnegan, Mo., to Leonard Blake and Daisy Turpin Baker. He attended Midway Rural Elementary School, near Pittsburg, and graduated from Mindenmines, Mo. High School. He married Hazel Alice Seybold on March 18, 1931. She survives of the home. He worked for 40 years as a cutter for the Berry Garment Factory, Key Garments, and Big Smith Garments. He was a city councilman for two years at Columbus. In the 1930s he worked for the Civilian's Conservation Camp, where he worked for three years as a cook. He was a member of the First Christian Church, at Columbus. Additional survivors include two sons, Herbert Baker, of Florence, S.C., and George L. Baker, of Bridge City, Texas; a sister, Lucille Coons, of Chicago; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Bunton, 95, of Liberal, Mo., died at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at the Barton County Memorial Hospital, at Lamar, Mo., after a brief illness. He was born April 5, 1903, at rural Barton County, Mo., to Lee and Frances Conrad Bunton. He was a lifetime resident of Barton County. He married Bessie Creamer on May 15, 1926, at Oswego. She preceded him in death on March 30, 1995. He was a farmer and a member of the Hannon Freewill Baptist Church, at Hannon, Mo. He also was a member of the Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 187, at Liberal. Nita Nell Getman LAMAR, Mo. -- Nita Nell Getman, 94, of Lamar, Mo., and formerly of Columbus and Oswego, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Lakeview Healthcare Rehabilitation Center, at Lamar, after an illness. She was born April 24, 1904, at Judsonia, Ark. to William and Sarah Catherine Jarvis Coslet. In 1906, the family moved to Cherokee, where she attended school. She married Emel Getman in 1941 at Cherokee County. He preceded her in death on Oct. 21, 1964. She was a practical nurse in Cherokee County for more than 20 years. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Amarillo, Texas. Survivors include a niece; a nephew; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. Kirkendoll, 79, of Joplin, Mo., and formerly of Pittsburg, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, after an illness. He was born Aug. 13, 1919, at Baxter Springs, to Nathan and Grace Kirkendoll. He lived at Joplin since 1968, when he moved from Pittsburg. He married Doris Moore on June 30, 1940. She survives. He was a regional manager for Monarch Insurance Company, retiring in 1971. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, at Joplin. He also was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, the York Rite, the Mirza Temple, at Pittsburg, and the Scottish Rite, at Joplin. Faye Delilah Meriwether COLUMBUS -- Faye Delilah Meriwether, 93, of Columbus, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at the Medicalodge of Columbus after an illness. She was born Jan. 23, 1906, at Cherokee County, to James D. and Sophia Isabella Stover Martin. She lived her entire life in the Columbus area. She graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in 1923. She graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1932. She also received a masters degree from Colorado State College of Education, at Greely, Colo. She married Fred R. Harper in 1929. He preceded her in death in 1931. She later married Samuel Meriwether in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1970. She taught school for 18 years in rural schools and at the Park School of Columbus. She then taught for 31 years at the Cherokee County Community High School. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Columbus, the B.P.W. Club, the Shakespeare Club, the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teachers Group, the Phi Lambda Theta Women in Education Group, and the Sigma Tau Delta Honorary English Fraternity, all of Columbus. Survivors include a step-son, John Meriwether, of Columbus; three brothers, Harvey, Howard, and Glenn Martin, all of Columbus; a sister, Eva L. Tanner, of Denver.; and several nieces and nephews. Richard Amos Netherton JOPLIN, MO. -- Richard Amos Netherton, 62, of Joplin, Mo., died at 9:35 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at St. John's Regional Medical Center of Joplin, after an illness. He was born April 7, 1936, at Webb City, Mo., to William Amos and Lucille Gill Netherton. He lived in the area all his life. He worked as a quality control inspector at Eagle Picher Industries, at Joplin, for 43 years. He last worked in May of 1998. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Joplin. He was a past president of the United Rubber Workers Union Local No. 812, at Joplin. He also was a past president of the National-International Little League at Joplin, where he had been involved in youth baseball for more than 40 years. He also was a member of the Joplin Blind Association. Helen Georgene Delaney Helen Georgene Delaney, 85, of 2307 S. Stillwell, died at 3:45 p.m., Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center, after a lengthy illness. She had been a resident of the Beverly Rehabilitation Center for four years. She was born June 7, 1913, at Pittsburg, to Christopher C. and Katherine G. Foster Rogers. She attended school at Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1931. She also attended Pittsburg State University. She married James Delaney on July 4, 1936, at Pittsburg. He survives at the Beverly Rehabilitation Center. She moved to Sterling, Ill., in 1937 and returned to Pittsburg in 1940. She was employed at St. Mary's Catholic School for 26 years and was a first lay teacher. She retired in 1979. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and the AARP. Additional survivors include a daughter, Kay G. Ward, of Harrisonville, Mo.; a brother, Bill Rogers, of Pittsburg; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four nieces; and a nephew. Betty Elizabeth Shewell COFFEYVILLE -- Betty Elizabeth Shewell, 82, of Coffeyville, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at the Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility, at Jefferson City, Mo. She was born May 10, 1916, at Coffeyville, to Walter Ivan and Edith Ianthe Zimmerman Todd. She grew up at Coffeyville and attended McKinley Elementary School. She graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School and Coffeyville Junior College. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Pittsburg State University. She earned her doctorate in psychological counseling from the University of Tulsa. She married Kenneth Abra Shewell Jr. on July 25, 1939, at Bentonville, Ark. He preceded her in death. She taught school from 1938 to 1976. Prior to moving to Coffeyville, she had been a high school teacher, a counselor, a school superintendent, a junior college teacher, a music supervisor and director at the Neosho Falls schools, Crawford Community High School, Highland Junior College, and Blue Mound Rural High School. In Coffeyville, she taught first grade at Longfellow, music at Whittier, and elementary instrumental music at all elementary schools. She also was an elementary guidance counselor, combination school psychologist and director of special education. She was an ex-officio staff member of the Marienne Frostig Center for Educational Therapy, at Los Angeles. She was a charter member of the Association for Citizens with Learning Disabilities, the Council on Children with Behavioral Disorders, the American Association of School Psychologists, the Ellis Island Foundation, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Coffeyville Lioness Club. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, Sigma Alpha Iota, Pittsburg State University Alumni Association, Parent Teachers Association, and the Coffeyville Hospital Auxiliary. She held state and/or regional offices in the Personnel and Guidance Association, the Association of School Psychologists, and the Council on Exceptional Children. She also served on the boards of the Kansas Children's Service League, Meadowlark Council of Girl Scouts of America, Boys Club, and Head Start. Other memberships included the Altrusa Club of Coffeyville, where she was a past president, Association on Mental Deficiency, American Association of University Women, Alpha Delta Kappa, American Legion Auxiliary, Honorary Psychology, Order of the Eastern Star Leroy Chapter No. 83, Council of Administrators of Special Education, Phi Delata Kappa, National Trust for Historical Preservation, the Nature Conservancy, and other wildlife and environmental groups. She held associate memberships in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and Matinee Musicals. She also chaired the Heart Fund Drive. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as director of adult singing. She also was a member of the choir and was a Sunday school worker with young people. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Todd Pauzauskie, of Jefferson City and three granddaughters,. She also was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Arthur Shewell. Watson, 82, of Goodman, Mo., and formerly of Pittsburg, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at her home after an illness. She was born March 4, 1917, at Orlando, Fla., to Ervin and Maude Green-Story. She lived most of her life at Oceanside, Calif. She lived in the Goodman area for seven months, moving from Pittsfield, Ill. She married Chic Sewell. She later married Wilfred Bill Watson in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1975. She was a homemaker and member of the Mormon faith. Survivors include two sons, Bud Sewell, of Anchorage, Alaska, and John Watson, of Cambridge, Wis.; two daughters, Toni Kilgore, of Goodman, and Lollie O'Neill, of Pittsfield; a brother, Clyde Story, of Kissimmee, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. He had been ill since December of 1998. He was born Nov. 4, 1961, at Pittsburg, to Fred H. and Audrey N. LeRoy Brand. He grew up and attended school at Frontenac. He graduated from Frontenac High School in 1979. He then attended Pittsburg State University, where he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology. He later moved to Seattle and then to Topeka. He returned to Pittsburg in November of 1989. Survivors include Rod Estes, of the home; his mother, Audrey Brand, of Frontenac; two sisters, Judy Brand Richards, of Valparaiso, Ind., and Linda Brown, of Austin, Minn.; his paternal grandmother, Catherine E. Brand, of the Sunset Manor Nursing Center; a niece; a nephew; three great-nephews; and five great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred H. She was born Nov. 28, 1906, at Girard, to Roy Henry and Goldie Alice Baker Johnson. She grew up and attended school at Girard. She graduated from Girard High School in 1924. She also attended Pittsburg State University for one year. She moved to Topeka in 1994. She married Ernest O. Meyer on June 14, 1926, at Girard. He preceded her in death March 16, 1972. She taught school for one year and worked for a time at Haldeman- Julius Publications in Girard. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Girard, the Loyal Bereans Sunday School Class, the Ladies Society, and the Sixty Club of Girard. Survivors include a daughter, Alice M. She was born Nov. 14, 1927, at Mulberry, to Virgil and Ruby Cagle Stivers. She married Jay Pratt on June 7, 1952, at Arcadia. The couple moved to El Dorado in 1953. He survives of the home. She worked for several years as a dispatcher for El Dorado Public Safety. She later transferred to the water department, and served the city for 20 years. She retired from the Butler County Clerk's office after eight years of service. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the ABWA, a Safehouse volunteer, and a member of WISPS. Additional survivors include her mother, Ruby Stivers, of El Dorado; three daughters, Pamela Linder, of Towanda, Kim Cool, of El Dorado, and Jill Hensley, of Garden City, S.C.; a sister, Lora Routh, of Wichita; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Krantz Jr., 75, of Chicopee, died at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. He was born July 2, 1924, at Pittsburg to Henry C. Sr. and Netta Galimberto Krantz. He was a lifetime resident of the area. Mr. Krantz served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Mary C. Willis on Oct. 24, 1946, at Girard. She preceded him in death Feb. 8, 1999. He was employed as a coal miner for P&M Coal Company. He retired in 1986. He was a member of the former St. Barbara's Catholic Church at Chicopee, the Chicopee Community Center and the United Mine Workers Association. Survivors include a son, Henry C. Krantz III of Pittsburg; three daughters, Bonnie Geier of Pittsburg, Dixie Giffin of Pittsburg, and Cheryl Ristau of Pittsburg; a sister, Betty Henderson of Pittsburg; and four grandchildren. She attended Pittsburg schools and was a 1957 graduate of Pittsburg High School. She married Johnnie Brackett, on April 20, 1963, at her family home in Radley. The couple set up a farmstead where they worked. Mr. Brackett survives of the home. Mrs. Brackett was a member of the Sliferette FCE and the Farm Bureau Board. She was safety chairman for the Crawford County Farm Bureau. She worked blood drives and participated in child identification for safety. She was a major contributor to the construction of the shelter at the Crawford County Fairgrounds. She had been in failing health since October of 1999. She was born July 25, 1907, in Marquette, Mich., to John and Anastasia Broaderick Holland. She had been a resident of Marquette until September of 1983, at which time she moved to Frontenac. Ms. Holland worked as a secretary for the Marquette County Health Department. She also worked for the Daily Mining Journal for 14 years and for the Army Air Force in Civil Services and for Cliff Dial Chemical Company, both of Marquette. She was a member of the AARP. Survivors include a sister, Marie Swenor of Marquette; three nieces, Karen Hafner of Frontenac, Patty Bailey of Russellville, Ark. and Mary Brower of Alanson, Mich.; and a nephew, John Meyers of Russellville, Ark., all who provided for her care. John William "Bill" Gazaway MULBERRY -- John William "Bill" Gazaway, 63, of Mulberry, died at 2:04 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at the Moore Few Care Center at Nevada, Mo. He was born March 27, 1937, at Croweburg, to Clifford and Frances Portwood Gazaway. Mr. Gazaway was a farmer. He lived in the Garland area most of his life. He graduated from Bronaugh High School in 1954. After his health forced him to retire, he was cared for by his brother, Galen, and his family. He was baptized in the Hepler Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany for two years. Sister Mary Loyola Cavanaugh FORT SCOTT -- Sister Mary Loyola Cavanaugh, 97, of the Mercy Convent at Fort Scott, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at Fort Scott Mercy Hospital. She was born May 17, 1903, at St. Paul, to Matthew Joseph and Mary Ellen Carroll Cavanaugh. Sister Loyola entered the Convent of Mercy on July 16, 1925, and gave her Perpetual Vows on March 25, 1931. She worked as a nurse, and laboratory and X-ray technician at Mercy Hospitals in Fort Scott, Independence and Fredonia. She also served as hospital administrator at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Hutchinson from 1947 to 1953. Prior to her retirement in 1979, Sister Loyola served with Pastoral Services at Fort Scott Mercy Hospital. Following retirement, she had been in charge of hospitality at the convent. Survivors include a brother, Matthew Cavanaugh of St. Paul; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Cavanaugh and Thomas Cavanaugh; and three sisters, Ellen Little, Frances Greve and Clara Cavanaugh. Watson, 90, died at 10:29 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at St. John's Regional Medical Center of Joplin, Mo. She was born Dec. 1, 1909, at Pittsburg to Joe and Jeanetta Enid Buck Spragg. She grew up in Pittsburg and attended local schools. She married Charles A. Watson at the First Christian Church of Pittsburg. He survives of the Beverly Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Watson was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the First Church of the Nazarene of Pittsburg. She also belonged to several camping clubs, where she was always Smokey the Bear when they camped. Additional survivors include a son, Charles A. Watson, Jr. of Pittsburg; a sister, Marjorie Fields of Pittsburg; three brothers, Chester Spragg and Melvin Ray Spragg, both of Galena, Mo., and Bob Spragg of San Jacinto, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was born March 8, 1945, at Columbus, to Samuel Wilson and Jessie Bigando Marsh. She attended grade school at Center Consolidated and graduated from Cherokee County High School of Columbus in 1963. She received her bachelor of arts degree and masters degree in elementary education from Pittsburg State University. She married Jim B. Flaska Aug. 19, 1987, at Pittsburg. He survives of the home. Mrs. Flaska was teaching third grade in Carl Junction, Mo. She previously taught at Arma, Columbus, Pittsburg, Wichita, and Kirksville, Mo. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Phi Tau Omega of Pittsburg, and Delta Kappa Gamma of Joplin. Additional survivors include two sons, James J. Flaska and Thomas J. Flaska of St. Joseph, Mo.; one brother, Sam Marsh of rural Columbus; one sister, Jean Marsh of San Francisco, and two nieces. William Alfred Hankammer William Alfred Hankammer, 79, of Pittsburg, died at 1:35 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. He was born June 15, 1921, at Van Wert, Ohio, to Otto and Miriam Hankammer. He married Mary Magee on Aug. 26, 1947, at Pittsburg. She survives of the home. Mr. Hankammer was a sergeant serving in the United States Air Force in Europe during World War II, where he prepared gliders for each European airborne attack in which the 442nd Troop Carrier unit participated. Mr. Hankammer graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1947 with a bachelor of science degree in education, majoring in industrial arts. Soon after his graduation, he developed a business designing and creating handwrought copper and brass pieces. He worked in bank design and construction for 27 years, and was the owner of Hankammer Bank Designs. He was on the Board of Directors at Humboldt National Bank, and a member of the Rotary Club. Additional survivors include a brother, John O. Hankammer of Topeka, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes the body be cremated, and no funeral services are planned at this time. Kuhn, 64, of Galena, died at 2:18 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at St. John's Regional Medical Center at Joplin, Mo, after a sudden illness. She was born July 23, 1936, at Galena, to Ralph Sr. and Blanche Moody Haner. She married Calvin F. Kuhn July 3, 1958 at Galena. He survives of the home. Mrs. Kuhn graduated from Galena High School in 1954. She worked at Pacific Mercury of Joplin, Mo. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Haner and Ralph Haner, and two sisters, Effie Dudley and Bessie Williams. Carmel Medical Center. Mr. Falcetto was born May 25, 1918 at Capaldo, to Fred and Gilda Carmel Falcetto. He was retired from Dickey Clay Manufacturing in Pittsburg. He was raised in Chicopee and attended Chicopee Schools. He lived in Chicopee most of his life. He married Rose Barone on Feb. 1, 1947, at Girard. She survives of the home. Earl Howard 'Sonny' Swafford Jr. LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. -- Earl Howard "Sonny" Swafford Jr., 60, of Lee's Summit, Mo. died Monday, July 31, 2001 at his home. He was born Aug. 24, 1940, at Fort Scott to Earl and Addie Swafford. He was a high school graduate of Arcadia and he served in the U.S. Navy. He was owner and operator of the Lee's Summit Taxi, LLC. He married Mryna Hassler in November 1967. Survivors include his wife, Myrna, of Lee's Summit; three sons Jeffrey Swafford of Oakland, Calif., Brian Swafford and Greg Swafford, both of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; two sisters, Beverly Silvers, of Salina, and Sherry Page, of Clinton, Mo.; one grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Loretta Colleen Swafford. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at the Langsford Funeral Home in Lee's Summit. Canny Ruby E. Canny, 93, of Pittsburg, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at The Green's at Creek Side at Kansas City, Mo. She was born May 1, 1908, in rural Cherokee County to Rila and Mary Malinda Fisher Mast. She moved to Columbus with her family and attended Columbus schools. On Aug. 18, 1928, she married Elmer Canny. They moved to Pittsburg in December of 1928. He preceded her in death May 19, 1986. Mrs. Canny worked for several years as a rural telephone operator. After moving to Pittsburg, she worked for the Fleischaker Ladies Ready to Wear Store. In February of 1946, she went to work for the Jones Store Company, where she was a buyer in yard goods and domestics. She retired in May of 1973. After her retirement, she continued to work as an extra employee until December of 1974. Membership was held in the First United Methodist Church, UMW Circles, the Garden Study Club, where she was a past president, Business and Professional Women's Past Presidents Club, a former member of the AARP, TT Club, and YMCA, former member and past president of Business and Professional Women's Club, Altrusa Club, Baker EHU and several bridge clubs. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Sesso of Leawood; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Elmer Canny Jr., her parents, four brothers and four sisters preceded. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the First United Methodist Church at Pittsburg with the Rev. Theodore A. Inman officiating. Mansfield, 89, of Parsons, died at 10:05 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at the Parsons Good Samaritan Center following a lengthy illness. She was born July 17, 1912, at Sheridan Township of Cherokee County, to James Montgomery and Mertie Lavina (Curry) Mansfield. She spent her childhood and attended school at McCune. She worked for the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center as a cook for10 years before retiring. She belonged to the First Christian Church of McCune. She was also a lifetime member of the Progress Chapter No. 49 Order of Eastern Star, and had received her 50-year pin. Survivors include several nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law. She was preceded in death by an infant twin sister, Rhoda; three brothers, Clarence, Ward, and Bernard; and two nephews. David Lynn Redd TYLER, Texas -- David Lynn Redd, 32, of Tyler, Texas died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001. He was born Jan. 31, 1969, at Hutchinson, to Dave and Marlee (Jaenicke) Redd. He attended schools at Hutchinson and Pittsburg. He graduated in 1987 from Pine Tree High School at Proctor, Minn. He married Leslie Schroer on Oct. 25, 1997. She survives of the home.
