She moved to Eudora in 1996 from Beeville, Texas. She married James Richard Hopson in 1939. He died April 14, 1986. She later married Clarence Lee Jean. He also preceded her in death. She was born Nov. 28, 1945, in Superior, Neb., the daughter of Don and Jean (Kendig) Charles. She graduated from high school in Republic in 1963, and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Kansas State University in 1970. Mrs. Gabriel had taught for 25 years in the Emmett, St. Mary's, DeSoto and Olathe school districts, and she was a member of a number of professional educational organizations. She received an Excellence in Teaching award from the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City in 1992. She volunteered for activities including general education degree completion courses, Pet Partnership, education for homeless youths, the Jane Goodall Institute, Special Olympics, Crop Walk and the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. Mrs. McDaniels worked as a bookkeeper for Sears, Roebuck and Co. while living in Florida. After moving to Baldwin City she served as housemother for the Phi Mu Sorority and later Kappa Sigma Fraternity, both at Baker University. She was also a homemaker. She married James Cree McDaniels on Aug. 12, 1995. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church; the Rebekah Lodge; and the American Legion Auxiliary all in Baldwin City. She is survived by her husband, Ottawa; four sons, Paul and Charles of Ottawa; Fred of Haysville; James Cree McDaniels Jr., Baldwin City; one sister, Beth Reeves of Baldwin City; and numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Wayne Whittington Services for Wayne "Big Joe" Whittington, 82, Baldwin City, were Tuesday, at the Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home with burial following in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Whittington died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born March 25, 1917, in Lebo, the son of Phillip and Susan (McKinney) Whittington. He grew up in Reading, graduated from Reading High School and worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 37 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1982. Mr. Whittington served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Tech Sergeant for the Ninth Combat Cargo Squadron. He was a member of the American Legion and Masons in Baldwin City. He married Mary Bell on Oct. 15, 1961, in Baldwin City. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include a daughter, Kellie Phillips, Baldwin City; four brothers, Jake, Chicago; Gene, Wichita; George, Reading; and D. Box 64, Baldwin City, 66006. Bruce Tate Services for Bruce Tate, 62, Lawrence, were Monday, at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial followed in Clinton Cemetery, Clinton. Mr. Tate died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at his home. He was born March 25, 1937 in Cosby, Mo., the son of Maurice and Eda Marie (Bunse) Tate. Mr. Tate, a 1955 graduate of Lawrence High School, received All-America honors in football. He worked for the city of Lawrence's water department, retiring in March 1999 as a senior inspector. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lawrence. He married Helen Jane Setter on Dec. 26, 1957, in Lawrence. She died Jan. 1, 1985. He married Janet Christian on Aug. 1, 1987, in Lawrence. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, David, Kansas City, Mo., and Dustin, Lawrence; a daughter, Cynthia Tate, Lawrence; two stepsons, Richard Edmonds and Ruben Edmonds, both of Lawrence; two stepdaughters, Diona Burton, Baldwin City, and Denise Swain, Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Lanny, Lawrence; a sister, June Bidinger, Topeka; and 17 grandchildren. Craig, 62, Tampa, Fla., died Dec. 21, 1999 at Memorial Hospital under the care of Lifepath Hospice. A native of Baldwin City, he moved to the area from Ohio in 1972. He was an operation manager for Fogarty Van Lines and an Air Force veteran. He is survived by his wife, Bernice; three sons, Mark, Watertown, N.Y.; Jackie, Kansas City, Mo.; and Kevin, Baldwin City; and a daughter, Melissa, Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, Allen, Baldwin City, and six grandchildren. Memorial services were at Mark III Funeral Home, Tampa, Fla. Lela Cooper Graveside services for Lela C. Cooper, 97, Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence. Mrs. Cooper died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa. She was born Oct. 22, 1902, near Vinland, the daughter of George E. and Zadie (Baer) Newton. She graduated from Vinland Rural High School in 1920. Mrs. Cooper, who moved to Ottawa in 1990, had worked at Ralph Ward Flower Shop, Lawrence, and then farmed with her husband. She was a member of North Baptist Church, Ottawa. She married Clifford E. Cooper on Feb. 23, 1926, in Lawrence. He died Oct. 27, 1988. Survivors include three daughters, Marian L. Wiseman, Ottawa; Myrna L. Clark, Kingsville, Texas; and Loretta L. Lawrenz, Baldwin City; two sons, Warren G. Cooper, St. Ann, Mo.; and Wayne D. Cooper, Huntsville, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Reynolds Shultz Memorial services for Reynolds (Ren) Shultz, 78, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with military honors by the American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14. Cremation has taken place. Mr. Shultz died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at the Hickory Pointe Rehabilitation Center, Oskaloosa. He was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Jefferson County, the son of Guy Edward and Darlene (Woolsey) Shultz. Mr. Shultz served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He received the Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation. He was elected to the state senate in 1964 and re-elected in 1968, and was chairman and member of various committees. He was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1967. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kansas in 1970, where he also served on many boards, committees and commissions. He was appointed as a consultant to the Farmers Home Administration in March 1973 and became the director-at-large for FHA in the Kansas City, Mo., office in January 1974. He was appointed as an assistant to the administrator of ASCS in April 1975 and in August 1976 began working in the Kansas City area until resigning in March 1977. Mr. Shultz had worked on the campaigns to elect Jim Jeffries in 1978 and Bob Dole in 1974. He also was an agriculture and veterans affair adviser before being appointed the state director-at-large for the FHA, retiring in 1991. He was a past member of the Agricultural Hall of Fame's board of governors; past director of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce; Jefferson County board of education clerk; Jefferson County Historical Society board member; Jefferson County Extension board president for several terms; past member of Farmland Industries board of directors; assistant sponsor of the Douglas County Teenage Republicans for six years; 4-H Club Community Leader for 10 years; member of the National American Legion Americanism Committee; legislative adviser for American Legion Boy's State for seven years; and legislative adviser for State American Legion. Mr. Shultz was a member of the following organizations: American Legion, 40 & 8, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Native Sons and Daughters, Elks, Kiwanis, Eagles, Farm Bureau, and National Grange. He had been the district chairman of the Kansas Republican Veterans Club and the Kansas Day Club. He also was elected an honorary member-at-large at the 1968 Teenage Republican State Convention and received Kansas Balanced Farming and Family Living Award from the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce. He married Donna L. Thompson on Aug. 10, 1941, in Topeka. She died March 5, 1985. He married Judy Nelson Mansfield June 7, 1986, in Lawrence. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Guy, Escondido, Calif.; two daughters, Michele Ann Fate, Overland Park, and Jennie Washburn, Baldwin; two stepsons, Curt Mansfield, Flagstaff, Ariz.; and Brian Mansfield, Kent, Wash.; two sisters, Betty Mae Zpperer, Valdosta, Ga., and Virginia Anderson, Redmond, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Burial followed in the Mayetta Cemetery. Mrs. Hofmann died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka. She was born Oct. 15, 1906, in Bancroft, the daughter of Roy and Bessie (Dulick) Gillaspie. She moved to Mayetta in 1966 from Rock Creek. Mrs. Hofmann was a homemaker and a news correspondent for the Holton Recorder and the Valley Falls Vindicator. She was a member of the Potawatomi United Methodist Church. She married John L. Hofmann on Jan. 1, 1929, in Topeka. He died in 1987. A granddaughter, Jodi Kay Dick, also preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Joy Anne Uthoff, Baldwin City, and Ilene E. Dick, Mayetta; a sister, Lucille "Betty" Griffith, Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Doris Rosalie Smith Doris Rosalie Smith, 75, Baldwin City, passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 at the St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was born Oct. 28, 1924, in Trego County the daughter of Ralph and Yuba (Flynn) Wiles. She grew up and graduated from the Trego County High School. She later attended Fort Hays State University. She married Floyd Smith on Nov. 22, 1945. He survives of the home. They moved to Baldwin City in 1953. She was employed as a bank teller for the Baldwin State Bank. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City; United Methodist Women; P.E.O.; and Kensington. She took great joy in her family and friends. She enjoyed cross-stitching and writing short notes to brighten up someone's day. Other survivors include two daughters, Doris Hinman and her husband Keith, Independence, Kan., and Donna Reed and her husband David, Baldwin City; two sisters, Loree Acheson of Palco, and Ava Cummings, Baldwin City; one brother, Loren Wiles, Manhattan and five grandchildren. One daughter, Diana Smith, preceded her in death in 1948. Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church, Baldwin City, with Rev. Nanette Roberts officiating. Box 64, Baldwin City. Edith Hrabe Services for Edith Nell Hrabe, 80, Wellsville, were Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Wilson and Son Chapel. Burial followed in the Wellsville Cemetery. Mrs. Hrabe died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Merriam. She was born March 1, 1919, in Goodland, the daughter of Persvil and Annie (Kolacny) Murray. She moved to Wellsville in 1951. Mrs. Hrabe had worked at the Parmalee Plant, Ottawa, during the 1960s and early 1970s, and then worked for Western Electric for 10 years. She was a member of Wellsville Baptist Church. She married August Hrabe on March 22, 1936, in Goodland. He survives of the home. Other survivors include three daughters, Janet Reeves, El Dorado, and Julie Coffey and Teresa Oshel, both of Wellsville; three sons, Donald Hrabe, Wellsville, Teryl "Tex" Hrabe, Baldwin City, and Jeffery Hrabe, Olathe; three sisters, Gladys Bohl, Lakin, and Helen Emig and Vida Young, both of Goodland; a brother, Carl Murray, Goodland; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Nealie Marie Serrato Nealie Marie Serrato, 79, Baldwin City, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at the Orchard Lane Apartments in Baldwin City. She was born Aug. 8, 1920, at Telephone, Texas, the daughter of John Howard and Eliza Summerfield (Sharp) Jordan. She grew up and attended schools in Dieghton. She was employed as a canner for the Libby's Cannery in California. She was a member of the Woman of the Moose and the Atchison Village Women's Club. She was a homemaker most of her life, where she took great joy in caring for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed embroidery, reading and baking. She was married to Gerald Craig, and later divorced. He passed away in May 1972. She then married Leo Serrato on Oct. 23, 1954, in Carson City, Nevada. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Pansy Bishop of Alvin, Texas, and Ruth Piper, Baldwin City; one sister, Oral Shaney of Portola, Calif.; one brother, Orville Jordan of Ness City; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. One son, Jerry Craig, also preceded her in death. Graveside services were Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at the Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City with the Rev. Mark Abshier officiating.
