Brief
History from Kansas State Historical
Society:
Logan County was
named for Civil War General John A. Logan
of Illinois. Containing the cities of
Oakley (part), Russell
Springs and Winona, the county was
organized on September 17, 1887, by J. G.
Perryman; Joseph Jones; J. W. Kerns; N. C.
Phinney; and R. P. McKnight.
The discovery of the
mineral nickel in 1888, and the beginning
of the quarrying industry of lime and
sandstone in the late
1880s contributed to the economy of
the county.
