James A. Wilson II 1921 - 1998 
IOLA - James A. Wilson II, 77, Iola, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at his home.
He was born March 14, 1921, at Florence, the son of Howard "Ted" and Nelle Swallow Wilson.
He grew up in the El Dorado area. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army as a medical officer and seeing action in the European Theater. After graduating from Kansas State University in 1952 with a degree in civil engineering, he was in the construction business in El Dorado for several years.
In 1961 he and his wife moved to Iola, where he became the city's superintendent until retiring in 1983.
He was active in several organizations, including the Kansas League of Municipalities and the State Water Resources Board. He was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.
He married Marjorie Beeson on Oct. 5, 1945. She preceded him in death on March 4, 1992.
Survivors include four sons, James A. Wilson III, Topeka, Thomas L. Wilson, Wichita, Jon R. Wilson, Boise, Idaho, and Michael S. Wilson, Burlington; seven grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, the Rev. Jan Chubb officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Iola. Memorials to St. Timothy's or the donor's choice are suggested.

Geraldine K. Dix 1947 - 1998 
THAYER - Geraldine K. Dix, 50, Thayer, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, after becoming suddenly ill at home. Death was unexpected.
She was born Dec. 13, 1947, at Paola, the daughter of Gerald and Ann Sellers Dix. She moved with her family to Earlton as a child and attended the Earlton School. She graduated from Thayer High School and was a resident of the area most of her life.
She was a secretary for Midco, Inc., since 1986.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Ann and Lyle Huffman, Thayer; five sisters, Claudene White, rural Chanute, Gaylene Liming, rural Independence, Mary Hammans and Karen Wheeler, both of Chanute, and Nancy Bottorf, Newburg, Ind. She was preceded n death by her father, Gerald Dix.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel, the Rev. Edgar Rains officiating. Burial is in Cedarvale Cemetery, Neohso Falls. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the chapel. Memorials to the Humane Society are suggested.

Carl G. Johnson 1913 - 1998 
THAYER - Carl G. Johnson, 85, Thayer, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at the Wilson County Hospital, Neodesha.
He was born April 20, 1913, in Marion, the son of Lester L. and Grace O. Dody Johnson. He graduated from Marion High School in 1932.
He began working at the Standard Oil Refinery in Neodesha in 1942, working there until it closed in 1970. He also farmed until he retired in the mid 1980s.
He married Marjorie E. Pavey Nov. 4, 1033, in Minneapolis, Kan. They moved to Wilson County in 1939. She preceded him in death in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Dale Johnson, Thayer; a daughter, Carol Newby, Thayer; a brother, N S Johnson, Kansas City, Kan.; five great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A brother, Kenneth, also preceded him in death.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Loran Fawcett Funeral Home, Neodesha. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Alice E. Shockley 1908 - 1998 
PARSONS - Alice E. Williams Shockley, 89, former long time resident of Chanute, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at Elmhaven East, Parsons.
She was born Nov. 25, 1908, at Macksville, Kan., the daughter of William Robert and Nellie May Ebersole Parks.
She grew up in Macksville and graduated from Macksville High School. She worked at Macksville until her marriage. She then moved to a farm near St. John and assisted in the farm operation. The couple moved to Thayer in 1946 and to Chanute in 1966.
She was a member of Neosho Bible Church. She was a volunteer for RSVP and a member of the Chanute Senior Citizens. She volunteered in local nursing homes.
She married Fred D. Williams March 20, 1936, at Lyons. He preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1969, at Chanute. She married Robert L. Shockley Aug. 17, 1973 at Miami, Okla. He died Oct. 1, 1977.
Survivors include two stepsons, Harold F. Williams, Liberal, and Victor E. Williams, Douglas; a stepdaughter, Vivian Burnett, Stafford; a brother, Frank Parks, Macksville; stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, George, Johnnie and Charles Parks, and two sisters, Cora B. Ernst and Emma M. Ballinger.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, at Memorial Park Cemetery, on E. 14th Street, the Rev. Elmer Hemphill officiating. Visitation will be until 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel. Memorials to the Elmhaven East Activity Dept. or Buffalo Community Church are suggested.

Craig D. Brown 1971 - 1998 
PARSONS - Craig Daniel Brown, 27, Parsons, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, in Parsons. He was a firefighter/EMT with the Parsons Fire Department.
He was born March 5, 1971, in Parsons, to Danny and Jane DuBois Brown. He graduated from Parsons High School in 1989.
He held national and state power lifting titles for 1988 and 1989. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and enjoyed fishing and camping.
He had been employed by the Parsons Fire Department since January 1993. Earlier he had worked a year at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant.
He married Kristi Dawn Krokstrom Nov. 9, 1991, at Parsons. They are expecting a second child in July. She survives, of the home.
Also surviving are a daughter, Kalee Dawn, of the home; his parents, Danny and Carla Brown, Parsons, and Jane Warren, Tulsa; a brother, Scott Baker, Parsons; a sister, Cathy Martinez, Parsons; his grandmother, Catherine Brown, Parsons; and a niece and nephew.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Parsons Municipal Auditorium. Burial will be in South Mound Cemetery, with the procession to the cemetery to be led by the Parsons Fire Department.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to a fund for his children and may be left at the funeral home.

Marie I. Fager 1906 - 1998 
ST. PAUL - Marie I. Fager, 92, St. Paul, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at Labette County Medical Center, Parsons. She had entered the hospital Monday and had been critical since that time.
She was born Nov. 7, 1906, at St. Paul, the daughter of Joseph B. and Mary Agnes McClarnan Dent. She graduated from St. Francis High School at St. Paul and received a teaching certificate from what is now Pittsburg State University.
From 1936 to 1934 she was a rural school teacher, teaching at the Brogan School and the Prairie View School.
She was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church and of the Altar Society.
She married Fred F. "Pete" Fager April 17, 1934, at St. Francis Church. He preceded her in death June 17, 1993.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Fager, St. Paul; six daughters, Charlene Oplotnik, Girard, Mary Jo Bradsaw, St. Paul, Olive Brungardt, rural Erie, Connie Fager, St. Paul, Gracie Fager, St. Paul, Judy Raymond, Charlotte, N.C.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Olive Patten, Virginia Beach, Va. Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Regina Ann, who died at age 3 in 1943, a grandson, Randall Bradshaw, who died in 1997, three brothers and two sisters.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Church, St. Paul, Father John Zich officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
Parish Rosary will be 7 p.m. this evening at Carson-Wall Funeral Home, St. Paul, led by Monsignor Vincent Hogan. The family will receive friends following the Rosary.

Michael L. Mitchell 1963 - 1998 
MOORE, Okla. - Michael Lawrence Mitchell, 35, Moore, Okla., died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at his home, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 23, 1963, the son of Melvin Lawrence and Shirley Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of the home; a son, Shane Brooks; a daughter, Amanda Hancock; his mother, Shirley Mitchell; two brothers, Steven and Melvin, Jr.; three sisters, Rita King, Glenda Brady and Ruby Black, two stepsisters and a stepbrother; his grandmothers, Theo Alley and Mildred Starnes.
He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Mitchell.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Resthaven Funeral Home, Moore, Okla. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

Betty J. Queen 1933- 1998 
Betty Jane Queen, 65, Paola, formerly of Chanute, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at her home.
She was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Chanute, the daughter of Everett and Jennieve Chandler Pruitt Washington.
She was raised in the Chanute area and attended public schools. She graduated from Chanute High School in the Class of 1953.
She worked most of her life in a housekeeping position, earlier in hotels and most recently in a nursing home.
She was a former member of Big Creek Church.
She married Everett "Buddy" Booe in 1954 in the First Methodist Church in Humboldt. They were later divorced. She married Gary L. Queen Nov. 3, 1977, in Miami, Okla. He survives, of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, David Booe, Chanute, Larry Booe, Topeka; a daughter, Patty Booe Womelsdorf, Diana, Texas; two stepsons, Stephen Queen, Mississippi, Mike Queen, Iola; a stepdaughter, Gina Best, Iola; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two brothers, James Pruitt, Lawrence, Everett Pruitt, Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery on East 14th Street, the Rev. Steve Pruitt officiating.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested in her memory to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University in care of the mortuary.

Watson A. Lehman 1909 - 1998 
IOLA - Watson A. Lehman, 88, formerly of Iola, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at Pinecrest Nursing Home, Humboldt.
He was born Dec. 27, 1909, at Caney, the son of Charles E. and Lanah Riley Lehman. He moved to Iola with his family.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a cook at the Kelley Hotel until it closed. He lived at the townhouse at Iola before entering the nursing home.
Survivors include a sister, Elora Card, Humboldt. He was preceded in death by a brother, James, and a sister, Ethyle Glore.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel, Iola, the Rev. Earl Bell officiating. Burial is in Iola Cemetery.

James W. Bertoncino 1945 - 1998 
James Wayne Bertoncino, 53, Wilmington, Del., died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at his home.
He was a chemical engineer for DuPont and traveled to man countries. He and his family lived in Holland at one time.
He was born April 18, 1945, in Girard and was raised there. He was a graduate of Pittsburg State University and Pacific Lutheran College, where he received his master's.
He married Kathy Engelman Feb. 24, 1968, in Chanute. She is the daughter of Leon and Virginia Engelman, Buffalo.
She survives, of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, Jason Bertoncino, Raleigh, N.C., Mark Bertoncino Blacksburg, Va.; a brother, Lewis Bertoncino, Roach, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial service will be Saturday in Wilmington, with graveside service in Girard at a later date.

Ben D. Peters 1928 - 1998 
Ben D. Peters, 70, rural Litchfield, Ill., died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at his home.
He was born Nov. 6, 1928, at Buffalo, to John and Mabel Dryden Peters.
He graduated from high school in Chanute in 1946 and attained a MS in librarian ship at Emporia State University. He earned a B.A. degree at Friends University, Wichita. He also attended Neosho County Community College, the University of Georgia, the University of Missouri, Wichita State University, Sangamon State University, Pittsburg State University, Sacred Heart College, Echard College, Lincoln Land Community College, and Manatee Community College. 
He was a retired school teacher, having taught English and Literature. He was also a librarian and self-employed farmer.
He had served with the Kansas State Guard, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army Reserves and Civil Air Patrol and U.S. Air Force Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Ben C. Peters, Pittsburg, David D. Peters, Pittsburg; two daughters, Suzanne K. Lindsay, Pittsburg, Angela Alsop, Prairie Village; a brother, William "Peter" Peters, McPherson; a sister, Faith Penner, Phoenix, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
He had been a member of St. Louis Soaring Assn., Short Wing Piper Club, Illinois Retired Teachers Assn., Montgomery Co. Retired Teachers Assn., American Legion and Knights of Columbus.
He was a member of the Catholic Church.
Patton Memorial Home, Hillsboro, Ill., is in charge of arrangements. Glidden-Ediger Funeral Service, McPherson, will handle burial of cremains at a later date.

Louise M. Carter 1916 - 1998 
ST. PAUL - Louise M. Carter, 82, a lifelong resident of St. Paul, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Prairie Mission Retirement Center, St. Paul, where she entered Sept. 12, 1994.
She was born March 25, 1916, on Big Island, rural St. Paul, a daughter of Edward Cyril and Bertha Grillot Carter. She grew up and attended schools in St. Paul, graduating from St. Francis High School in 1935. She also attended Parsons Junior College for a year.
She worked as an assistant cashier for 35 years at the Exchange State Bank in St. Paul, retiring in 1981.
She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, St. Paul and the St. Luke's Circle Daughters of Isabella, where she had served as Regent for two years. She was also a member of the Altar Society.
Survivors include a brother, Ralph E. Carter, St. Paul; a sister, Mildred Carter, St. Paul; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul Carter, Cyril Carter, Loyd Carter and Raymond Carter.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church, Father John Zich officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery at St. Paul. Emma L. Johnston 1898 - 1998 
WALNUT - Emma L. Johnston, 100, Walnut died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 28, 1898, at Butler, Mo., the daughter of Fred and Lenora Hackler Frear.
She moved from Butler to Walnut with her family as a small child. For many years she lived in North and South Dakota where her stepfather, the Rev. John Babb, was a Presbyterian minister. After his death, the family returned to Walnut.
During the 1930s and '40s she lived at Lansing. She also lived at Chanute, Iola and Altoona before returning to Walnut where she lived until 1990 when she entered Park Place Healthcare and Rehabilitation, Chanute.
She was a homemaker. After the death of her husband, she was employed as a nurse's aide at Cliff Manor, Kansas City, Mo., and Autry Nursing Home, St. Paul.
She was a member of the former Christian Church at Walnut, where she taught Sunday School, was a youth fellowship leader and pianist.
She married Harry Johnston on May 6, 1914, at Walnut. He preceded her in death in March, 1957.
Survivors include a son, Alfred Johnston, Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Ellouise McDaniels, Erie, and Norma Joy Gier, Chanute; 9 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 16 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Otis Johnston, a sister, Elsie Thompson, a half brother, John Babb, two stepbrothers, Lenny and Rex Babb and a stepsister, Viola Yokum.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Chanute, the Rev. David Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Cemetery. Friends may call at their convenience at the Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel, Chanute. Memorials to the CWF at the First Christian Church are suggested.

Anna W. Winans 1913 - 1998 
Anna Wilma Hudson Winans, 84, Edwardsville, formerly of Erie, died Sept. 7, 1998, at the Providence Hospital in Kansas City. 
She was born on Sept. 30, 1913, near Shaw, to Charles W. and Carrie E. Hudson. She grew up in the Shaw community and was a member of the Shaw Christian Church. 
She married Verle O. Winans on March 16, 1930. at Thayer. 
She is survived by three daughters, Helen P. Gough, Erie; Verla A. Lock, Derby; Vera M. Vitt, St. Paul; two sons, G. W. "Bill" Winans,
address unknown, Jerry B. Winans, Atlanta, Ga., 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, R.W. "Bill" Hudson, Erie.
No services were held. Cremation was handled by Alten-Harrington Funeral Home, Bonner Springs.

Rose A. Marple 1915 - 1998 
YATES CENTER - Rose Amelia Marple, 83, Yates Center, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
She was born on Nov. 23, 1915, in Atchison, the daughter of Joseph R. and Inez Opal Wright.
She was a retired waitress who worked at Woody's Restaurant, Yates Center, for many years.
She lived all of her life in Yates Center and graduated from Yates Center High School.
She was a member of First Christian Church, Yates Center, where she taught Sunday School.
She is survived by a brother, Guy Marple, Chanute, and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Iris Radne Marple, on Feb. 27, 1997.
Graveside services will be held at the Yates Center Cemetery Thursday at 2 p.m., the Rev. Dan Haggard officiating. The family will receive friends at the Campbell Funeral Home from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, then proceed to the cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, Yates Center.

Elmer J. Robison 1915 - 1998 
Elmer J. Robison, 82, 709 S. Grant, died today, Dec. 1, 1998, at the home of his daughter, Vivian L. Rowan.
He was born Dec. 19, 1915, in Lecompton, to Vester H. and Bessie Bowen Robison.
He grew up in Lecompton and graduated from Lecompton High School. In 1942 he moved to Chanute where he and his father owned and operated Robison Implement Company. Later they owned and operated the Robison Motor Company until he went to work for the city of Chanute.
He was employed by the city as an electrician in the electrical department from 1955 until his retirement in November of 1978.
He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and was past grand master of Cedar Lodge No. 103 of the Masons, Chanute.
He enjoyed bowling and was active in many sports.
He married Zora E. Kellerman Dec. 5, 1937, at Cherry Mound Church, Westphalia. She survives, of the home.
Also surviving are a son, Elmer J. Robison, Jr., LaMirada, Calif.; a daughter, Vivian L. Rowan, Chanute; a brother, Vester H. Robison, Jr., Parsons; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Otterbein United Methodist Church, the Rev. Jana Baxter officiating. Burial will be in Neosho County Memorial Park on West 21st.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel.

Raymond J. 'Pat' Conn 1914 - 1998 
Raymond J. "Pat" Conn, former Chanute resident, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at Allen County Hospital, Iola.
He was born June 19, 1914, in Marshall, Mo., the son of Earnest C. and Malisa Parks Conn.
He was a well-known PGA golf pro for 51 years in the Kansas and Missouri areas. His first pro job was at Lakewood Country Club in North Kansas City, Mo. He was also club pro and was responsible for designing and rebuilding golf courses at Lake Quivira Country Club, Lawrence Country Club and Chanute Country Club. He also designed and built Safari Public Golf Course in Chanute, which he owned and operated from 1967 until 1994.
He was an accomplished teacher and golfer and several Kansas and Missouri state champions and a U.S. women's amateur champion.
He shot the course record at Shawnee Country Club in Topeka in 1952 and to the record stands, being tied only once.
He married Ethel Nora Miller August 20, 1935, in Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death August 27, 1997.
Survivors include three daughters, Patti Persell, Bern, Sheila Forman, Denver, Joy McNett, Piqua; two brothers, Carl Conn, Shawnee, Elmer Conn, Las Vegas; five sisters, Ada Martin, Lake Quivira, Marger Garner, Merriam, Frieda Van Wallingham, Shawnee, Mary Zarda, Shawnee, Jean Ward, Osage Beach, Mo.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Swanson and Marie Van Laberg.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Otterbein United Methodist Church, Chanute. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery on East 14th Street.

Clarence Batley 1932 - 1998 
Clarence Batley, 66, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1998, at his home in Tuttle, Okla., after a short illness.
He was born June 19, 1932, in Carson, Ala.
He is survived by companion Betty Alson; his first wife Christine Batley, Roswell, N.M.; children Cheryl Meyer, Oklahoma City, Okla., Dale Batley, Tuttle, Okla., Chiquita Hammonds, Roswell, N.M., John Batley, Del City, Okla., Cathy Seely, Roswell, N.M., Alicia Batley, Tuttle, Okla.; 16 grandchildren; brothers Robert Batley, Jr., Farmington, N.M., William Batley, Delphi, Ind., Billy Ray Batley, Plainview, Texas, Jimmie Batley, Blanchard, Okla.; sisters Luvania Fowler, Arminda Buys, Nora Carr, all of Missouri, and Pearlie Goforth of Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nora and Robert Batley, two brothers, Charlie and Wesley Batley, a sister, Marie Wynn, a grandson, Spence Wayne Batley, and his second wife, Linda Batley.

Robert K. Hinerman 1942 - 1998 
Robert K. Hinerman, 56, 1214 S. Rutter, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at St. Joseph Via Christi, Wichita.
He was born Oct. 14, 1942, at Liberal, to Edward E. and Alice M. Selby Hinerman.
The family moved from Liberal to California and then to Little Rock, Ark. He attended schools in Little Rock and Bigelow, Ark., where he graduated from high school. After graduation he entered the U.S. Army where he served for 20 years. He lived in several places after retirement before moving to Chanute in 1986 to manage the Country Club until 1995. He and his wife purchased Jesse in January, 1996, and operated it until July, 1998, when the business was sold. He retired from being owner of Jesse.
He was a Methodist.
He married Hildegard M. Heinzel Dec. 1, 1967, in Augsburg, Germany. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors are two sons, Robert Hinerman, Jr., Denver, Jeremy Hinerman, Chanute; three daughters, Sherry Mikish, Stuttgart, Germany, Michaela Hinerman, Denver, Sue Gile, Lincoln, Neb.; two brothers, Larry Hinerman, Little Rock, Ark., Carl Selby, Bigelow, Ark.; two sisters, Dixie Mauphin, Edgewater Park, N.J., Carole Barton, Little Rock, Ark.; six grandchildren; two aunts; nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Hinerman.

William S. Williams, Jr. 1930 - 1998 
CHERRYVALE - William S. Williams, Jr., 68, rural Cherryvale, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Via Christi Medical Center, Wichita.
William S. "Stinker" Williams, the son of William "Bill" S. and May Orphie Wilkins, was born May 20, 1930, in Superior, Neb. He graduated from high school in Palmer, Neb.
He had lived in the Neodesha and Cherryvale area for the past 45 years while being employed by Beachner Construction Company, St. Paul. He was also a self-employed mechanic.
He married Jada Woods Oct. 24, 1950, in Palmer. She survives, of the home.
Also surviving are a son, Marvin Eugene Williams, Thayer; two daughters, Carol Pack and Pamela Williams, both of Thayer; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Two brothers, Roy and Lawrence, preceded him in death.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Loran Fawcett Funeral Home, Neodesha. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Milo E. Peterson 1912 - 1998 
BUFFALO - Milo O. Peterson, 86, a resident of Buffalo, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. He was born July 2, 1912, in Billings, Mont., the son of Carl and Mary Ellen Johnson Peterson.
He was a 1929 graduate of Welda High School, attended Iola Junior College, graduated from the University of Kansas and received his masters degree from Emporia State University. He also served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II.
He began his teaching career in Stillwell and then taught in Gridley, from 1945-1955. He became the superintendent in Beattie from 1955-1960 and then served as superintendent in the Midway and Altoona-Midway school districts from 1960 to his retirement in 1974. Following his retirement, he served as an interim-superintendent in the Baxter Springs, Hamilton and Prairie View school districts.
He was a member of the High Prairie Methodist Church, where he was a lay speaker and the music director. He was active with the Kansas State High School Activities Association and the Lions Club.
On Dec. 24, 1942, in St. Joseph, Mo., he married Phyllis Johnsmeyer. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two sons; Larry Peterson, Buffalo, and Bob Peterson, El Dorado; and one daughter, Mary Peterson, Apple Valley, Calif.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Timmons Funeral Home, Fredonia, the Rev. Sara Dillinger of High Prairie United Methodist Church officiating. A memorial has been established in his name with the Kansas Lions Club Sight Foundation.

Martha M. "Mattie" Endres 1913 - 1998 
Martha M. "Mattie" Moriarty Endres, 85, of Bella Vista, Ark., formerly of Parsons died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at the Innisfree Retirement Center in Rogers, Ark., where she entered three weeks ago.
She was born Nov. 25, 1923 in St. Paul, a daughter of Patrick O. and Mary Ann Ryan Moriarty. She graduated from Parsons High School.
She was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a secretary in Parsons for many years. In 1948, she moved with her husband to Wichita, where she was employed with Southwestern Bell as secretary to the district manager. She moved from Wichita to Chanute in 1956, when her husband was transferred there as manager for Southwestern Bell. In 1965, they moved to Topeka and worked as a secretary in the provider relations department of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. She retired in 1978. In 1980, they moved to Bella Vista.
She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Bella Vista and St. Bernard's Women's Circle. She was also a member of Bella Vista's Women's 18-hole Golf Association. While living in Chanute, she was active in Southeastern Kansas and Tri-State Golf Associations.
She and Albert Endres were married May 26, 1947 in St. Patrick's Church in Parsons. He preceded her in death March 3, 1997.
She is survived by six nephews and nieces including Tony Templeton, Janet Walters, and Kathy Thurman, all of Parsons.
She was also preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Satuday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons, with Father Michael Schemm officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons, where the family will receive friends following the Rosary until 8:30 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to either the St. Patrick's Catholic Church School or the American Cancer Society.

Regina F. Davis 1951 - 1998 
TORONTO - Regina F. Davis, 47, 627 Highway 105, formerly of Stark, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at her Toronto home, following a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 30, 1951, at Parsons, a daughter of Roland R. "Pete" and Ferrol E. Lowe Kelsey. She grew up and attended schools at Stark and Erie. In 1970 she graduated from Erie High School. For several years she worked at a sewing factory at Yates Center. She and her husband moved to Toronto 19 years ago.
She loved animals and shopping. She was a Methodist.
She married Don Taylor on June 14, 1970. They later divorced. She married Rocky L. Davis on June 16, 1979, at Stark. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Greg Taylor, Stark; her parents, Roland and Ferrol Kelsey, rural Stark; a granddaughter.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Stark United Methodist Church, the Rev. Ron Bumstead officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery. Friends may call at their convenience at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Erie, after 5 p.m. today.

Charles M. Gormley 1933 - 1998 
LEAVENWORTH - Charles M. Gormley, 65, Leavenworth, formerly of White Cloud, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Leavenworth.
He was born Jan. 21, 1933, at White Cloud, the son of Joseph R. and Ruth Gibson Gormley.
He attended schools in White Cloud and later worked as a laborer in construction and agriculture. He worked in the medical records department at the hospital in Leavenworth.
He served in the United States Air Force in 1952 and was a former member of White Cloud Christian Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Joseph Gormley, Chanute, and Gary Gormley, Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Bonnie Greve, Chanute, and Mary Cokley, Corning. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Joanne McNutt and Barbara Taylor.
Graveside service was Saturday at the Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud.

Gene John
1942 - 2001
FREDONIA - Gene John, 59, longtime Fredonia High School football coach, teacher and guidance counselor, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at his home in rural Fredonia. He had been ill several months.
He was born May 27, 1942, in Wichita, the son of David A. and Naomi Hodges John. 
He grew up in Wichita and in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School in 1960. He attended Pittsburg State University, where he lettered in football and was a member of the 1961 national championship team. He received his bachelor's degree in 1964 and his master's degree in 1965.
In August 1965, he moved to Fredonia to begin his teaching and coaching career at Fredonia High School. He had coached all sports and coached football for 28 years. In recent years, he had been guidance counselor for the school.
In 1982, he was a coach for the Shrine Bowl and in 1983 he was a head coach for the Shrine Bowl. He was inducted into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in 1999.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fredonia, the Constellation Lodge No. 95, A.F. & A.M., the York Rite Bodies of Independence, and the Mirza Shrine at Pittsburg. He was also a member of the Pittsburg State University Alumni Association and had been active in state and national coaches associations.
On Nov. 21, 1962, he married Linda Bemis at Burlington. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Jason John, Fredonia, and Caleb John, Chanute; a brother, Dale John, Gridley; a sister, Patricia Miller, Houston; his parents, David and Naomi John, Burlington; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Jeffery and Aaron.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Wilson Gymnasium at Fredonia High School, led by the Rev. Larry Grove. Burial will be in the Fredonia City Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday morning. The casket will be moved to the church in Fredonia Wednesday afternoon.
The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church in Fredonia from 6 - 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Edward M. Aylward
1923 - 2002
SALINA - Edward M. Aylward, 78, Salina, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002.
He was born July 13, 1923, at Salina. He was a farmer-stockman in Ottawa and Saline counties for more than 60 years. 
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Elks Lodge and the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Salina, past chairman and member of the Sacred Heart Interparochial School Board and a member and chairman of the Saline County Planning and Zoning Commission.
He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, a 4-H leader for many years, precinct committeeman for the Republican Party and assisted in organizing the New Cambria Rural Fire Department.
Survivors include a son, Michael E. Aylward of Chanute; two daughters, Jeanne Edwards of Salina and Jayne Aylward Ungles of Holton; a sister, Madeline Martin of Solomon; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma J., who died in 1991.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Salina. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina.
A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the church.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, and then at the church.

Dale Peterson
1909 - 2001
PARSONS - Dale Peterson, 92, Parsons, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at the Elmhaven West Nursing Home. He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born Sept. 6, 1909, at Galesburg, the son of David F. and Della Cox Peterson. He attended the Danville School and farmed in the Galesburg area most of his life. He moved to Parsons in 1986, after he retired.
He was a member of the Galesburg Christian Church and Farm Bureau. He loved to fish, hunt and play the fiddle. For many years he played fiddle at the senior citizen dances at the Parsons Recreation Center.
He married Naomi Curnutte on Aug. 1, 1935, at Oswego. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, David Peterson, rural Parsons; a daughter Dixie Murdock, Parsons; eight grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, led by grandsons Gregg Murdock and Lance Peterson. Burial is in Mount Hope Cemetery at Galesburg. Ruth Taylor
1923 - 2002
EMPORIA - Ruth C. Taylor, 78, Emporia, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Newman Regional Health Center, Emporia.
She was born June 23, 1923 at Toronto, the daughter of George Lee and Gladys E. Toogood Curtis.
She was a graduate of Toronto High School and the Newman Hospital School of Nursing, Emporia.
She was a registered nurse and retired in 1977 from Saint Mary's Hospital, Emporia, where she had worked as house supervisor and in the cardiac care department. She had earlier worked for Dr. David Davis in Emporia.
She attended the Grace United Methodist Church. She was a member of Miriam Chapter #14 Order of Easter Star, the Flint Hills Quilters Guild, and Emporia Regional Quilters Guide, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
On March 27, 1944, she married Dorsie Melton Taylor at Kansas City. He died August 6, 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Ann Sporing, Olpe; three sons, George Walter Taylor, Olathe, Kenneth Alan Taylor, Emporia, and Robert Curtis "Curt" Taylor, Chanute; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, led by Pastor Norbert Tegtmeier of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Emporia. Cremation will follow. Inurnment will be at a later date at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia.

Mary E. Borsdorf

WELLINGTON - Mary Elizabeth Borsdorf, 74, Wellington, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001.
She was born March 27, 1927, at Tyrone, Okla., the daughter of Francis and Ruby Louise Norwood Gulick. She was raised around Hamilton and attended schools there. She lived at Alma, then Beloit, moving to Wellington about two years ago to be near her daughter.
She was curator of the Wabaunsee County Historical Museum at Alma. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Beloit.
She married Fred August Borsdorf on March 1, 1947, at Hamilton. He died May 21, 1986.
Survivors include a son Fred A. Borsdorf Jr., Wichita; four daughters, Mary Jeannine Foose, Dallas, Laura Louise Borsdorf, Schwenksville, Penn., Dannetta Cook, Wellington, and Lisa Kelly, Mound Valley; three brothers, John Gulick, Hamilton, James Gulick and Steven Haniger, both of Augusta; two sisters, Shirley Zuck, Cherryvale, Barbara Whiteside, South Haven; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Spurlock.
Funeral was 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Hamilton, with burial in Hamilton Cemetery. Memorials to the Methodist church are suggested.

Vera H. Meats
1915 - 2001
TOPEKA - Vera Hazel Meats, 86, formerly of LeRoy, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Plaza West Care Center, Topeka.
She was born Sept. 29, 1915, south of Burlington, the daughter of George and Lizzie Storrer Dreyer.
She was a long-time resident of the LeRoy area and worked as a special duty nurse at Allen County Hospital, Iola, for 10 years. She also worked with her husband on their farm northeast of LeRoy.
She was an active member of the LeRoy United Methodist Church, a member of the LeRoy Cemetery Board and Plank Ladies Aide.
In 1992 she moved to Topeka to be near her son and daughter and their families. In 1994, she moved to Rolling Hills Retirement Center, Topeka and the past four years she was a resident at Plaza West Care Center. While in Topeka she attended the Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church.
She married William David Meats II on April 4, 1937, at Iola. He died n 1989.
Survivors include a son, John F. Meats, Topeka; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Reser, Topeka; a brother, Don Dreyer, who was raised in her home; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, William David Meats III, three brothers, Jake, Vernon and Wesley Dreyer, and a sister, Mary Inez Schmidt.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jones Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in LeRoy Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Oscar Edward Lance

FREDONIA - Oscar Edward Lance, 93, rural Fredonia, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Elk Manor Nursing Home, Moline. 
He was born Jan. 27, 1909, in rural Buffalo, the son of Chester and Grace Faye Cox Lance. 
He was the general manager for the Excelsior Brick Plant, Fredonia, for many years. 
On July 23, 1929, he married Pearl A. Cole, in Bartlesville, Okla. She died April 26, 1991. 
Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Lance of Dickinson, Texas, Ted Lance of Frankfort, Ky., Jack Lance of Haysville, and Leslie Lance of Woodlands, Calif.; two daughters, Barbara Gorton and Florence Guiou, both of Fredonia; a sister, Evelyn Timmons, Fredonia; five brothers, Earl Lance and Calvin Lance, both of Independence, Mo., Arthur Lance of Alvin, Texas, Gerald Lance of Fredonia, and Lyle Lance of Sedgwick; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Lance; a grandson, Clifford Lance; two sisters and two brothers. 
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at Maple Grove Cemetery, Roper, led by Ted Lance and Carl Gorton. 
The family will receive friends from 6 - 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Edgar L. Youngberg
1918 - 2001
Edgar L. Youngberg, 83, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, after a six-month long illness.
He was born Aug. 9, 1918, at 801 N. Grant, the son of Elmer and Sigrid Warner Youngberg. He was a lifetime resident of Chanute. He retired on Aug. 9, 1983, from Ash Grove Cement Company after 36 years of service. He was an avid bowler, collector of antiques and sports enthusiast.
He was a corporal in the U.S. Army for four years, serving during World War II in the European Theater.
He was a member of Grant Avenue Baptist Church and VFW Post #1654, both in Chanute.
He married Ethel Hadley Miller at Independence on Aug. 3, 1953. She died on Dec. 26, 1961. He married Mary Ellen Swank Finney on Sept. 2, 1967, at First Baptist Church, Erie. She survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Jerrold M. Finney, Dallas, and Van W. Finney, Olathe; a daughter, Gwendora A. Johnston, Fenton, Mo.; a stepson, John Miller, St. Charles, Mo.; three brothers, Ruel Youngberg, and Woodrow Youngberg, both of Chanute, and Dale Youngberg, Independence; four grandsons and a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Cecil Youngberg Erickson and Esther Youngberg Erickson; and a brother, Leonard Youngberg.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Mortuary, led by the Rev. Bill Peters. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, on E. 14th, with military honors by the VFW Post 1654.

Roy Dale Aikins Jr.
1947 - 2001
Roy Dale Aikins Jr., 54, Chanute, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at his home. 
He was born Dec. 13, 1947, in Parsons, the son of Roy Dale and Virginia Lea Neagle Aikins Sr.
He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1965. After high school he served two years active duty at the Patuxent River Naval Air Base in Maryland.
He was employed with Wonder Bread, Ruan Trucking, Square Deal Oil and Enron. He managed the IGA deli in Colby, Ottawa and Chanute as well as the Sears store in Chanute.
He was a member of the Humboldt Jaycees and the Humboldt Volunteer Fire Department. 
He was a volunteer with the Humboldt ball program for several years and was one of the volunteers who organized and constructed Sweat Park. 
On January 25, 1966, he married Glenda Faye Michael in Humboldt. They divorced in 1977. 
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Roy and Vada Aikins, Humboldt; his life partner, Mona Courter, of the home; a son, Ed, Amarillo, Texas; a daughter, Jennifer Barnhart, Louisburg; two brothers, George Wayne Aikins, Humboldt, and Danny Jo Aikins, Chanute; a step-sister, Patricia Lee Michael Bankston, Baldwin City; two step-brothers, Max William Michael and Joseph Alan Michael, both of Humboldt; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Lea Aikins; a brother, Ronald Earl Aikins; and his grandparents. 
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Humboldt, led by the Rev. David Meier. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Humboldt. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #1654, Chanute.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 - 8 p.m. at the Gibson-Koch-Friskel Chapel, Chanute.

Ruth Huffman
1931 - 2002
JOPLIN, Mo. - Ruth Huffman, 70, Joplin, formerly of Chanute, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin following a sudden illness.
She was born June 1, 1931, in Gainesville, Texas, the daughter of Garland and Wilma Beall Pendleton. She attended Gainesville elementary and high schools. 
She had been a resident of Joplin since 1994, moving there from Pittsburg, where she had lived since 1956. She and her family had lived in Chanute before moving to Pittsburg.
Prior to retirement, she was the church administrator for the First United Methodist Church, Pittsburg. She was currently attending the First Community Church, Joplin, but had been an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Pittsburg and also was a former member of the PEO CJ Chapter, Pittsburg.
On Jan. 3, 1953, she married David Huffman in El Paso, Texas. He survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Lydia Zager, Columbia, S.C., and Denise Fitzpatrick, Pittsburg; two sons, Paul Huffman and Brian Huffman, both of Wichita; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, led by the Revs. Tedd Inman and David Smith. Private family graveside services will be at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg. 
The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

May O'Brien
1913 - 2002
NEODESHA - May O'Brien, 88, Neodesha, formerly of Chanute, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at the Beverly Health and Rehab Center, Neodesha.
She was born Jan. 25, 1913 in Montreal, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Mae Tackelberry Roberts. 
She grew up in Montreal, moving to Detroit, Mich., when she was about 15 years old.
She was a homemaker.
In 1931, she married Harold "Mike" William Seagraves, at Detroit, where they made their home. He died in May, 1941. 
In 1954, she married Maurice O'Brien at Peterburt, Ontario. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Larry Seagraves, Parsons; a sister, Winifred Stifer, Los Angeles, Calif.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the funeral home.
