She was born March 15, 1939, at Willowdale, the daughter of Alexander and Agnes Sheahan Gittlein. A lifetime Seward area resident she was a homemaker and partner in farming with her husband. She belonged to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Altar Society, Seward. On June 6, 1959, she married John J. Keenan at Great Bend. He survives. A Vinita, Okla., resident, formerly of St. John and Farmington, N.M., he was a drilling engineer for Texaco. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. She moved from Stafford to Grant County in 1947. She was involved in 4-H clubs, owned a flower shop for 12 years, and wrote a book of her memories called "Down Memory Lane." She enjoyed reading, crafts, ceramics, traveling, antiques, and writing cards and letters of encouragement. On Sept. 18, 1938, she married Kenneth Lofland in Stafford County. He died in 1983. She lived the last 50 years in Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. In Hutchinson she was associated in the two primary hospitals in their polio wards. In the past 40 years she and her husband Roy sold real estate in three states. Survivors include her husband Roy, age 96, a son and three daughters, 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was born July 1, 1920, at Devol, Okla., the daughter of James Leroy and Dora Ellen Sheldon Totman. She moved from Minneola to Stafford in 1993. Hamilton, 87, died March 27, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Minneapolis. He was born Feb. 5, 1914, at St. John, the son of Charles and Mamie Hamilton. He was a longtime resident of St. John. He was a retired custodian, after working 30 years for St. John schools, and a retired farmer. He belonged to First Christian Church and Community Fellowship Church, both formerly of St. John. On March 19, 1932, he married Ida Ruth Watson at Noble, Mo. She preceded him in death. Survivors include: four daughters, Betty Lu Shuler, Littleton, Colo., Bonnie Ann Hunsicker, Murfreesboro, N.C., Vicki Sue Lance, Minneapolis, and Anita Kay Bross, Cincinnati; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She was born April 6, 1922, at Stafford, the daughter of Pen-umbra A. and Grace Langdon Newell. She attended Kansas State University and later graduated with a master’s degree at Colorado State University. A Garden City resident since the late 1950s, moving from Holcomb, she taught classes at Ensign and Holcomb, and home economics at Abe Hubert Middle School, Garden City. She retired in 1984. She belonged to First United Methodist Church, Garden City, and Delta Kappa Gamma. On Dec. 26, 1977, she married Victor C. Albrecht at Garden City. He survives. Dr. Samuel Howard Elliott Dr. Samuel Howard Elliott, 84, died May 5, 2001, at the Fort Scott Manor Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Blue Rapids, son of Joseph Harry Elliott and Rebecca Billingsley Elliott. Howard (Bud) lived in Stafford while his father managed the T.M. Deal Lumber Company and was a 1934 graduate of Stafford High School. He began his chiropractic practice in 1945 in Fort Scott. He retired in 1981. He was past president of the Kansas Chiropractic Association in 1966 and 1967, past president of Fort Scott Kiwanis Club and active in the council of Boy Scout Troop 114. He was a member of the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge #8, Fort Scott Scottish Rite Consistory and Mirza Shrine Temple, Pittsburg. He married Dr. Alice Mae Humes on April 7, 1937, in Oklahoma City, Okla. She preceded him in death on Jan. 5, 1998. Survivors include a son, Thomas, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a brother, Albert R. Elliott, Hutchinson; and two sisters, Helen A. Hester, Hutchinson, and Elizabeth I. Smith, Houston, Texas; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Franklin. Betty Ruth Bird Betty Ruth Bird, 79, passed away April 18, 2001, in New Braunfels, Texas, where she had resided for the past several years. Betty was born June 13, 1921, at Anthony, Kansas. At the age of eight, she moved with her family to Stafford, Kansas, where she lived until her college years. She earned her A.B. degree at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, and her M.A. at the University of California in Berkely. A dedicated English teacher, specializing in college composition, she took academic minors in music and biology. She taught at Bakersfield, California, Junior College, was a laboratory technician at Massachusits General Hospital in Boston, and was a cereal chemistry technician for a San Francisco bakery firm. She later resumed her teaching career in Smiley, Texas. She was a member of the American Association of University Professors and of Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary teachers association, while at Bakersfield College, and of Pi Delta Ornicron, honorary education society at the University of California. An accomplished poet, who once was selected to attend a seminar with Robert Frost, Betty’s book of poems, "Kaleidoscope," was published in 1968. Betty was a great student of the Bible, always willing to share her knowledge with others, and was near completion of writing a book on religion at the time of her death. Her poetry reflected her love of nature, and she took great pleasure in all types of music. She was devoted to children and was loved in kind by her students and by her many nieces and nephews. Her quick wit, sense of humor, generosity, and many acts of kindness will ever be remembered by her family and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, William Walker and Hazel Bird, a sister, Jeannette Baxter Bates, and a brother, Walker Reames Bird. She is survived by two sisters, Barbara Hershey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Carole Smith and her husband, Conrad, of Liberty, Missouri, and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was born June 21, 1908, at Clements, the daughter of Augustus Fremont and Ethelind Pyles Shaft. She was a graduate of Cottonwood Falls High School, and the Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. She was a resident of rural Stafford since 1933, and a secretary at Hutchinson Office Supply and Printing. She belonged to Calvary Baptist Church, Stafford. On April 4, 1933, she married Ben Fritzemeyer at Hutchinson. He died March 29, 2000. Survivors include: two sons, Joe, Stafford, and Ray, Wichita; a daughter, Irma Ethridge, Glasco; a brother, Junior Shaft, Atwater, Calif.; a sister, Edna Keller, Hutchinson; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Viola Ruth Smyth Viola Ruth Smyth, 92, died May 18, 2001, at Lyons Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Lyons. She was born Oct. 5, 1908, at St. John, the daughter of Ernest and Minnie Beaver Wise. She was a longtime Hutchinson and Castleton resident, moving to Lyons in 1999. She was retired from patient supply at Grace Hospital, Hutchinson. She was a longtime Stafford resident before moving to Spokane. She was the owner and operator of the Powder PUff Beauty Salon in Stafford. She was a 1936 graduate of Stafford High School and attended Sidney’s Beauty School in Hutchinson, where she also taught. She was a member of the Nazarene Church of Stafford, participated in the Missionary League, taught vacation bible school, member of the WCTU, Ye Olde Tyme Club, Rebecca Lodge, Stafford Garden Club, was a Cub Scout Den mother and was the county chairman for the March of Dimes. In 1935 she married Melburn Shanks. In 1979 she married Charles "Cap’’ Shell. He died in 1982. She then married John White in 1991. He survives. Other survivors include one son, Blaine Shanks of Wichita; one daughter, Gaylene Youngberg, Salina; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, moving from Lyons, she worked for Hutchinson Bag Company for 27 years. She was a 1944 graduate of Turon High School. She belonged to Temple Baptist Church. She was born March 14, 1919, at Tonkawa, Okla., the daughter of Fred and Alma Busby Hutto. She was a retired office training supervisor for Mountain Bell Telephone Company and was a resident of Arlington for 28 years, moving from Albuquerque, N.M. She was a past member of the Rainbow Girls and served as the Grand Worthy Advisor for the state of Kansas. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was one of the first women to become a licensed pilot in the state of Kansas. On Nov. 5, 1941, she married Robert L. Leach at Winfield. He died in March 1993. He was born Sept. 25, 1911, in southeast Stafford County, the son of Jacob and Elisa Marcum Schmidt. A longtime resident of Stafford County before moving to McPherson in 2000, he was a farmer, electrician and a custom harvester. He belonged to Friends Church, Stafford, Zenith Co-op, Ninnescah Electric, was a past school board member of York Center Country School in Stafford County and also was a school bus driver. On Feb. 13, 1932, he married Leona Adams at St. John. She died Aug. 9, 1990. In Dec. 1990, he married Virginia Powell at Stafford. She survives. On Jan. 7, 1929, she married Wayne Alton "Jack" Hartnett at Hutchinson. He died April 17, 1984. Fred Sizemore Former Stafford church of Christ minister Fred Sizemore, 61, died Sept. 1, 2002, at Washington Regional Medical Center, Fayetteville, Ark. He had been in poor health several years. Fred and his wife, Mary, had been married 42 years. Fred preached for the church 6 years in the 1970s before moving to Canada for a number of years. He and his family returned to stafford for another 6 years, leaving in 1984 to live in Wesley, Ark. While in Stafford he worked with John Brock in the roofing business. Fred was also a charter member of the Optimist Club and an Emergency Medical Technician. Fred was well known for his laughter, a great ability to play guitar and to sing. He did love music and people. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Neal and Ella Sizemore, Rowlett, Texas; Larry and Julie Sizemore, Wesley, Ark., Michael and Renee Sizemore, Wesley, Ark.; three daughters, LaDonna and Mike Keck, Wesley, Ark., Geri and Danny Martin, Fayetteville, Ark., Adala and Keith Watkins, Huntsville, Ark.; one sister, Janette Alexander, Conroe, Texas; 15 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; 3 step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandsons, Jeremy Qugley and Kyle Watkins. Edmond O. Biggs Edmond O. Biggs, born December 7, 1914, in Sylvia, released to God’s care on Sept. 7, 2001, in Woodland, Calif., after a lengthy battle with kidney failure. He was raised in Macksville on a farm. He graduated from Hutchinson Business College in 1935, and married Virginia Thomas, who preceded him in death in 1981. He moved to Albuquerque, N.M. with his family in 1941, where he managed grocery stores until beginning a 34 year career with TWA. He retired as Operations Supervisor in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1977, then moved to Reno, Nev., where he lived with his wife, Carolyn until her death in 1991. He is survived by his sons, Thomas and Richard Biggs, daughter-in-law, Diane, grandchildren, Lance, Desiree, Tim, Shawn, six great-grandchildren; sister, Beth Stephenson, niece Connie Black and nephew Ralph Stephenson. He will be remembered for his warm personality, kindness and sense of humor, in spite of his failing health and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A resident of Stafford for most of his life, he was a driller in the oilfield and was retired from Zenith Coop. On Sept. 20, 1950, he married Audra Kasselman at Clyde. She survives. A lifetime Pawnee County resident, he was formerly the executive director of the Pawnee County ASCS office and after retirement a realtor and land appraiser with Clock Real Estate, all at Larned. He was U.S. Navy veteran. He belonged to First United Methodist Church, Larned, and was a volunteer fireman with the Larned Fire Department for 40 years. He was a 50-year member and past master of Larned Lodge No. 167 AF & AM, Tolden Sheaf Chapter No. 226 OES, Great Bend, and had served on numerous city, county and state committees. On July 1, 1955, he married Daisy A. Brazda at Burdett. She survives. A 1938 graduate of Stafford High School, he was a resident of Lorraine since 1950, where he had worked 31 years with Lorraine Grain Co. and 11 years for the city of Lorraine. She was a school teacher at Rising Sun in Reno County, and Ardrey in Stafford County. She was also a civil servant for the U.S. Government, retiring after 30 years. In 1923, she married Carl Spear. They later divorced. He died in 1958. Survivors include: three sons; two daughters; a brother, three sisters including Freda Werner, Hutchinson; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two caretakers. Raymond Owen Tompkins Raymond Owen Tompkins, 76, died Oct. 2, 2001. He was born April 3, 1925, near Byers, the son of Lawrence and Gladys Miles Tompkins. He graduated from Antrim High School in 1942, and Kansas State University in 1947. He was employed at Soil Conservation Service, Great Bend, from 1947 to 1951, and then was a land-use technician for Orange County, California. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge and receiving the purple heart. On Jan. 6, 1946, he married Margaret Jane Russell at St. John. She died May 16, 2001. He was born July 7, 1912, at Macksville, the son of John Howard and Minnie Myrtle Rowland Suiter. He took over the operation of his fathers farm until 1949 and then worked as a businessman in several business ventures in Denver retiring in 1970. A resident of Loveland for 14 years, he was a former resident of Sun City, Calif. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge where he was a 32nd Degree Mason. He loved fishing and teasing his grandchildren. On May 12, 1933, he married Verna Ruth Beaver in Kansas. She died March 20, 1997. A retired lineman, mail carrier, and farmer, he lived in the Pratt area for more than 50 years, Cannon City, Colo., from 1991 to 2000, then in Grove, Okla., since April 2000. He belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grove, Okla., and was a lifetime member of Kinsley Gun Club, Kinsley. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as PFC in the 108th Infantry in the Philippines from 1944 to 1945. On Oct. 9, 1949, he married Marjorie Lea Moffat at Natrona. She survives. In 1941, she married Harold Santee at Kinsley. He was killed in World War II in 1944. On Dec. 28, 1947, she married Howard L. Guettsche at Hutchinson. He died Oct. 20, 1996. A Hudson resident all of her married life, she was a graduate of St. Rose School of Nursing, Great Bend. She was a registered nurse, taught in a one-room country school and was a homemaker. She belonged to Trinity United Church of Christ, Hudson, and drove the horse-drawn school bus for the country school. On April 6, 1938, she married Elmer Louis Spangenberg at Hudson. She was born June 5, 1934, at Sylvia, the daughter of Aaron and Alma Queen. She graduated as high school salutatorian. She married Robert L. Daniel and traveled with her husband around the country in the oilfield. He preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Michael Daniel; a daughter Debbie McGowen; four grandchildren, a sister, Doris Hargett; nieces, Sherry White and Lynette Bennington, and a nephew, Kevin Hargett. Newdigger, 83, Pittsburg, died June 22, 2003, at the Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg. He was born April 21, 1920, in Picher, Okla., the son of Arthur and Rena Mitchell Newdigger. He and his family moved south of Joplin, Mo., when he was 12 years old. He had been a resident of the Pittsburg area since 1954. He worked for Overhead Door Company in Pittsburg as an installer for 42 years, retiring in 1987. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII as a Private First Class from November, 1941 through October, 1945. He was a member of the VFW, Joplin, Mo., the Carpenters Union and a leader in the Cherokee County 4-H. On Dec. 24, 1954, he married Carrie Gurley in Joplin, Mo. She survives. Darrel Pettijohn Darrel Pettijohn, 76, died June 22, 2003, at his home in Stafford. He was born Dec. 28, 1926, at Tetersville, in Madison County, the son of Murel and Cecile Swann Pettijohn. He had been a resident of Plainville and Palco before moving to Stafford in 1965. He was an oilfield pumper and employed with the City of Stafford before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, served on the Board of Directors for Friends of Quivira and was a past Boy Scout leader. He was an Army veteran of WWII. On May 23, 1948, he married Clara Lavon Eves at Lyons. She survives.
