ALLEGANY COUNTY SCHOOLS 08 Dec 1894 A list of Allegany County Schools (99) and their enrollments and the name of the principal.

ARNOLD 24 Jan 1894 Mr William H Arnold of Cumberland received a telegram from Norristown PA stating his brother Meshack Arnold has died there at the State hospital. He was born in 1852 in Frostburg a son of William Arnold and was unmarried and a inmate of the hospital for several years. Burial in the cemetery of the hospital.

BEALL 05 Feb 1894 Miss Lily Beall, the oldest daughter of George H Beall of Hazen, died yesterday from consumption, aged 30 years. She had been confined to bed for the past 2 months. The funeral is Sunday from the home, Rev. Wright of the Union Grove M E Church with burial in the church graveyard.

BECK 24 Jul 1894 Mr Henry Beck of the Beck Brothers saloon business, died this morning at his home on Front Street. The cause of his death was liver trouble from which he suffered for several months. He was seized by a hemorrhage last Saturday and taken to his home but the efforts proved futile. He was 30 years of age and married to Miss Lizzie Betz, but they had not lived together for some time. The funeral is from his mother's home on Bellview Street with burial in the German Beneficiary Cemetery.

BROOKS 24 Mar 1894 Mrs Catherine Brooks, wife of the late John R Brooks, died at the Elberon Hotel this morning. She was formerly a Miss Jamerson. The funeral is tomorrow from St Patrick's with interment in St Patrick's cemetery.

BUCY 08 Mar 1894 Mrs Randolph Bucy (nee Brashears) died at her residence near Gilpintown yesterday morning following a lingering illness of pleurisy. She leaves a husband and 3 children to mourn their loss. The funeral is today with interment in the family cemetery on the Henry Bucy estate.

CARDER 20 Nov 1894 Circuit Court slander case # 85, John W Carder vs. James W Wilson concerning a fire on 23 May 1892 if an Oldtown store owned by James T Darkey. Testimony of Thomas E Twigg says that Charles Twigg burned the store down at the bidding of Mr Carder and that there is only room for one store in Oldtown (Mr Carder's), and that man who has the store offered 2 men who do anything for drink, to set the fire. This article is 4 paragraphs in length. 22 Nov 1894 Testimony continues with attempts to impeach the testimony of Thomas E Twigg and of Randolph Hartley. 24 Nov 1894 Case is in final arguments and turned over to jury for deliberation. 27 Nov 1894 Jury renders a verdict for the plaintiff and awards one cent in damages and court costs.

CHANEY 27 Apr 1894 Flintstone- Mrs Sarah Ann Chaney, widow of the late Leonard Chaney, died on Tuesday (24 Apr) at her home, one mile north of Flintstone of consumption. Mrs Chaney was a mother of 8 children, all grown. Her age was 63 years, 8 months, and 26 days. She was the last member of the family of Jasper "Squire" Robinette. She was buried today (26th) at the Chaney burying ground on the home farm, Rev Harris of the ME Church officiating.

CLUPP 31 Jul 1894 Mr Anthony Clupp, a miner from Lonaconing, died while at work at the Pine Hill Mine of George's Creek Coal & Iron Co yesterday morning, aged 62 years. He was engaged in wedging a ledge of coal, when a premature fall of roof coal fell, burying him and filling the entire room. Co-workers began to remove the debris but after several hours of work, his mangled body was unearthed. He leaves a wife, 3 daughters, and 5 sons. His burial took place yesterday.

COAL MINES 15 May 1894 A coal strike in the Cumberland region is on due to a reduction of wages from .50 to .40 per ton, the same cause of the strike of March 8, 1886. That strike lasted 2 months. Previous strikes of 1879 (35 days); 1880; 1882 (5 ½ months) and in 1886, when the men agreed to .40 a ton. Note: By the end of August, the strikers had gradually returned to work, outlasted by the mine operators. Maryland governor Brown called out the National Guard to accompany the miners who wished to work so as to avoid problems.

ELBIN 19 Apr 1894 Mr Daniel Wolford, who resides 5 miles east of this city on the Baltimore Pike, wrote a letter to his sister Mrs John Elbin of Falisburg Ohio whom he had not heard from for some time. A few days ago he received a reply that both she and her husband had died. She died Nov 8, 1892 and he died shortly afterwards. Mr Elbin was 85 years of age and she was 74 years old. Both are from Flintstone.

FAIRVIEW 17 Jan 1894 The Fairview M P Church, 2 miles west of Flintstone near the Baltimore Pike, was dedicated Sunday morning by Rev Edmonson following extensive remodeling. This modest little brick church occupies a high ground among the pines and was originally built on a one acre lot donated by Elisha Willison in the summer of 1847. The repair committee included Hiram Wolford, Isaac Smith, Epsley Hartsock, M B Perrin, and H F Willison. The carpentry work was by Jacob & Frederick Sliger of the Cumberland Valley; brick work by Isaac Clark of Cumberland and plastering work by Robert Seale.

FILLER 11 Dec 1894 Mrs Sarah Filler, relict of John Filler who died in a fall from a horse 23 years ago, died at the home of a son-in-law, J W S Nycum of Ray's Hill, Bedford County, PA on 03 Dec 1894, in the 79th year of her life. She was born and raised in Allegany County, MD about 2 miles from Cumberland and her maiden name was Sarah Foulk. Her first husband was John L McLaughlin and they had several children, 2 of whom survived their father. A daughter, Elmira, wife of Robert M Skillington of Rays Hill; and a son, Lt Charles McLaughlin of Co F, 13 PAV who was killed at Cold Harbor. Her second marriage yielded 3 children; Fletcher Filler of Davis WV; Mertie, wife of J W S Nycum of Rays Hill; and Maggie E, wife of C O Skillington of Everett. The funeral is at Rays Hill ME Church, Rev J A Wood Jr officiating with interment at the Brick Church, along side of her late husband.

FINDLAY 05 Mar 1894 Mr William Findlay of Mt Savage, died at his home yesterday, aged 83 years. He was born 18 Jan 1811, at Kirkmuirhill, Leesmahagow Parrish, Lanarkshire Scotland. He married Miss Margaret Watson in 1832, and came to Frostburg in 1838. Of the 7 children born, 2 survive; James Findlay, a foreman of the Union Mining Co clay mines; and Mrs Helen Hinckle, widow of John Hinckle who died in 1882. The funeral is tomorrow at Mt Savage. FRANTZ 24 Dec 1894 Mr William Frantz Sr died today at the residence of a son Mr Daniel Frantz on N Centre Street, aged 85 years and 8 months. The following children survive: Messers, Daniel; John N; William F Jr; and Charles W Frantz and two married sisters; Mrs Emma W Brotemarkle and Mrs Isabelle Gurley. The funeral is at Zion Lutheran Church on the Bedford Road and interment in the cemetery connected with the church.

FRANTZ 29 Mar 1894 Huntington WV- Mr Joseph Frantz died last night, aged 62 years. He was fatally injured by a veneer saw at the Sliger Mill at Central City operated by his son-in-law Thomas Sliger. He was a son of Mr William Frantz St of Cumberland and was born near Bottle Run WV. At the age of 17 years, he married Miss Roseanna Miller and the following children survive both of them; John N Frantz; Alva Frantz; Mrs Mary Miller of Cumberland; H O Frantz of Keyser WV; Mrs Sallie Sliger of Huntington WV with whom Mr Frantz made his home. For several years he operated a grocery at the corner of Bedford & Centre Streets before retiring. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs William Brotemarkle; Mrs L F Gurley; and Messers, Daniel, William, and Charles Frantz, all of the Cumberland area. Mr Frantz's father, 86 years old, also survives. The funeral is Saturday from the home of Mr John Frantz, Columbia St and interment in Rose Hill cemetery.

GRUBER 04 Jan 1894 Mrs Mathias Gruber, who had been confined to her bed for several weeks, is now able to be removed to the residence of her daughter Mrs Thomas Cook on N Centre Street.

GUNNING 18 Jun 1894 Mr Joseph Gunning died in Gallitzen PA on Friday (15 Jun) of Bright's disease. He was born and raised in Eckhart and was in his 39th year. He was a merchant until the strike on 1882 when he settled in Gallitzen where he engaged in a hotel and other businesses. He was a son of the late James Gunning and was well known here. A brother, John resides in Cresaptown. Also attending the funeral were other brothers, James and William of Cincinnati; and sisters, Mrs Byrne of Philadelphia and Mrs Foley of Piedmont. He leaves a wife and 6 children. His body was brought here over the Pennsylvania RR and taken to the residence of his father-in-law, Mr Patrick McGann of Vale Summitt. Interment was in St Michael's at Frostburg.

HAMILTON 24 Feb 1894 Alexander Hamilton, farmer of Warrior Mountain, died this morning at the residence of Mr George Dean of Linderville, from a complication of diseases. He was brought to the home of Mr Dean to have skillful doctors of Cumberland attend him. Within a few days he seemed to get better but then sank peacefully away. He was about 45 years of age and leaves a wife and a large family of small children to mourn him. The remains were taken to the home for burial today.

HARTSOCK 16 May 1894 Mr Charles Milton Hartsock, son of Capt H H Hartsock, died this morning at the residence of his father on Decatur Street, after a lingering illness of much pain and discomfort. He was about 21 years of age and one of the best athletes of the Cumberland area. The funeral is tomorrow from the home, with Rev J C Nicholson of the Centre Street M E Church and interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

HINKLE 12 Mar 1894 Mrs Louisa Hinkle, wife of J T Hinkle, died Saturday evening (Mar 10) at her residence on Bedford Street, aged 74 years. She had been ill for some time. She was a Miss Ruby and married at an early age to Mr Hinkle, both born and raised east of the city. Mr Hinkle is a very elderly gentleman and there are no children to console him. Funeral is tomorrow at the Centre St Church, Rev. Nicholson officiating.

HOLMES 17 Dec 1894 John M Holmes, well known in Cumberland as a former dry goods businessman, died at Keyser WV on Saturday (15 Dec). He was engaged in business in Eckhart and at Alpine Station on the B & O RR before moving to Keyser. He married a Miss Johnson, a sister to Col John Johnson of Alaska WV.

JEFFRIES 29 Jan 1894 Mr Samuel Jeffries, a successful farmer, died yesterday, age 65 years. The funeral is tomorrow at the Mt Harmon Church.

JENKINS 23 Apr 1894 Mrs Lucy Jenkins, wife of Edward Jenkins of Mt Savage, died Sunday Morning(Apr 22) from dropsy. She was a Miss Mason of Clarke Co VA and was in her 58th year. The funeral is tomorrow from the ME Church with Revs. Still and Nott presiding. Burial will be in St John's P E Cemetery .

JOHNSON 21 Feb 1894 Mrs J Smith Johnson died last evening after a brief but painful bout of heart failure. She was 47 years old and widow of the late J S Johnson. She leaves 2 sons, Albert & Bernard Johnson; 2 brothers, A R & Jesse Lewis; and 1 sister, Mrs JC Orrick, all of Cumberland. The funeral is tomorrow at Emmanuel Episcopal church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

JOHNSON 15 Jan 1894 Mr Columbus Johnson died at his residence in Flintstone last Friday (12 Jan) of grippe and pneumonia. He had been employed at the Fayerweather and Ladew tannery at Gilpintown and leaves a wife and 5 small children to mourn his loss.

KEIR 20 Apr 1894 The body of John Keir Jr. was located yesterday at 4:30 in the Bowery Mines, found by William Crowe under the direction of mine boss, Mr Robert Scott. He leaves a wife and 3 children and was 33 years of age, born in Neumiles, Ayershire, Scotland on mar 20, 1861 and came to America in 1870. The funeral is from the home with Rev Brett officiating and interment in Allegany Cemetery.

KIER 09 Apr 1894 Mr John Kier Jr was buried alive at a cave-in at the Bowery Mines near Frostburg on Saturday (7 Apr) about 4:45. Bowery Mines takes its name from the defunct Bowery furnace that stands nearby about one and 3/4 miles from Frostburg, near the old Midlothian Mines. 19 Apr 1894, The body of John Kier Jr was found today by the large force of men at work in the mines. The remains will be buried from his father's home in Frostburg today.

KIRK 02 Jun 1894 The death of Mr Patrick Kirk occurred on Wednesday (May 30) at his residence on Cecelia Street after an illness of some time. He was in his 70th year and leaves one son, James Kirk, mail carrier for the Cumberland office. The funeral is Friday with a requiem mass at St Patricks with interment in St Patrick's Cemetery.

MALLON 10 Dec 1894 Michael Mallon of Vale Summitt died last Tuesday night(04 Dec) and was buried yesterday at St Michael's Cemetery, aged 95 years. He was born in county Longford, Ireland on 01 Jan 1800, and lived there until 1849 coming to this country and living; first, in Cumberland for one year, then; to Borden Shaft for 15 years at work in the Borden Mine Co. and then; to Vale Summitt until his death. He was a carpenter by trade and leaves 2 daughters; Mrs Halley and Mrs Patrick McGann, both of Vale Summitt.

McELFISH 05 Jun 1894 Mr Thomas McElfish died at his home in Flintstone on Sunday morning (3 Jun) at the age of 73 years. Funeral is Tuesday with burial in the IOOF cemetery at Flintstone.

McKENZIE 08 Jan 1894 Mr Enoch McKenzie, a farmer, died at his home near Winchester Bridge on Saturday (6 Jan) after a lingering illness. He was 60 years of age and lived here all of his life. His funeral is today with interment at St Patricks.

METZ 09 May 1894 Alfred Metz, 13 years of age, was killed in the Potomac mines yesterday as he worked with his father, Mr William Metz. They started toward the mouth of the mine with a car of coal which was piled too high and caught a cap head, twisting it around, knocked down a prop, loosening a portion of roof coal, and fell upon young Metz, breaking his neck causing instantaneous death. Mr Metz was also slightly injured about the head and shoulders.

MIDDLETON 24 Feb 1894 Mrs Ellen Middleton, wife of Tax Collector Middleton of District 3, died yesterday at her home in Twiggtown after a lingering illness. She was about 48 years of age and a mother of 10 children, all surviving her. Two of her daughters are married. The funeral is tomorrow from the late residence and burial in Twiggtown cemetery.

O'BRIEN 17 Nov 1894 Mt Savage- The funeral of Mrs O'Brien, who died on Tuesday (13 Nov), took place from St Patrick's Church today. She was a Miss Farrell of Mt Savage before her marriage to Mr O'Brien at Washington DC, five years ago where she has since resided. Two months ago, she visited here with her parents, and upon return to Washington, took typhoid fever from which she died.

PLUMMER 21 Apr 1894 Mr Thomas Plummer of Frostburg was killed yesterday at Eckhart Mines while engaged in putting a new cog wheel in when it slipped and fell upon him, crushing his head and neck to the extent that he died shortly afterwards. He leaves a wife and 7 children. The funeral is from the home tomorrow.

RANK 05 Jun 1894 Mrs Annie C Rank, a sister of John Rank and the late Henry W Rank of this city, died yesterday at Lonaconing at the residence of her mother. The funeral is tomorrow with interment in the German Beneficiary society's cemetery on the Baltimore Pike, near the city.

RAWLINGS 12 Apr 1894 Mrs Rebecca Rawlings died this morning at her home in Rawlings Station. She was born 07 Dec 1807, the eldest child of George McCullough of Frostburg. She married Moses Rawlings and had lived at Rawlings in the old home of the Cresap's which was built in 1787. These children were born of this marriage: Mary, now deceased, married Richard Sprigg now of Staten Island; Lloyd married Miss Jennie Patterson now living in California; Newton, unmarried, lives at home; Maria Lamar married Randolph Sprigg and lives in Rawlings; William Lynn married Miss G. E. Knight and lives in this city; Lucy P., now deceased, married John W Cook of this city; Margaretta died unmarried; Moses H. married in St Louis where he now lives; Louisa married V. S. Cresap and, after his death, to Alex King of this city; Charles M unmarried and lives at home; A. C. married Miss Fannie Hutson and lives at Rawlings. Funeral services are from the home with Rev Clarence Buehl and interment at Rose Hill Cemetery. ( 4 paragraph article)

REICHART 08 Jan 1894 Mrs Margaretta Reichart, wife of Casper Reichart, died at her residence on S Bedford Street of old age. She was 72 years of age and lived in this city for 40 years. She was born in Germany and leaves a husband and 3 sons; John, Joseph and Casper. The funeral is tomorrow at Sts Peter & Paul with internment in the cemetery connected with that church.

REPHORN 06 Jan 1894 Mr Henry Rephorn died yesterday at his home in Eckhart, aged 81 years, 8 months, and 2 days. The funeral is tomorrow from the home with Rev. Conradi of the German Lutheran Church at Frostburg and Rev. Savage of the M E Church at Eckhart in the Eckhart church with burial in the old Porter cemetery near Eckhart. A wife and 14 children, 10 boys and 4 girls survive. Mr Rephorn was a native of Sechelreuth Germany.

ROBERTS 17 Nov 1894 Flintstone- Mr Charles Roberts, living on the old "Uncle" Henry Ash farm on Flintstone Creek, died yesterday of heart disease, aged 38 years. Mr Roberts leaves a wife and 4 children to mourn the untimely death of their husband and father. He will be buried at the Catholic Church at Bean's Cove.

ROHMAN 07 Apr 1894 Mr Martin Rohman died this morning at his late home on N Harrison Street following a lingering illness. Until recently he was a farmer near Brady's MD. He was 73 years of age and the father of 14 children, 10 of whom survive along with his wife. The funeral is at Sts. Peter & Paul with interment in the Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

SHIRCLIFF 07 Apr 1894 Mr Honorius Shircliff died last night at his home in the Orleans district. He was a Justice of the Peace for Allegany County.

SHRYOCK 04 Jan 1894 Mrs Phoebe Shryock died at her home near Oldtown yesterday, aged 80 years and 9 months. She leaves quite a number of children and grand children. The funeral is today at Oldtown.

SLEEMAN 05 May 1894 Mrs John Sleeman died on Thursday (3 May) at her home in Vale Summitt while preparing breakfast for her husband, a well known miner employed by the Consolidation Coal Mines Co at the Hoffman mine. The deceased leaves her husband and 10 small children with Thomas, the oldest at 15 years of age. The funeral was today at the Vale Summitt M E Church and interment in the Matthews Cemetery.

STALLINGS 21 Jul 1894 Mr Charles Stallings died yesterday at his home near Twiggtown in his 79th year. He was a resident of this county all of his life. The funeral is today from the Union ME Church with interment in the graveyard of the church.

THOMPSON 03 Apr 1894 Pekin MD- Fifty year anniversary of Mr & Mrs Henry Thompson. Their six children celebrate: Mr John Thompson of Hookdale PA; Mrs Alex Gillies and Mrs Hugh Stuart of Pekin; Richard Thompson of Alabama; Mrs William Wehland and Mrs Perry Stump of Moscow MD. Mr Thompson has spent 60 years as a miner and has 38 grand children and 6 great grand children.

TWIGG 09 Aug 1894 W H Twigg, a son of Mr John Twigg, residing near Paw Paw, was shot and instantly killed near Washington DC at the C & O Canal towpath on Tuesday (7 Aug). Mr Twigg was 27 years of age and has for some time been employed on the canal boat Mertens which is run by Captain Taylor Reid of this city. It seems that Twigg left the employ of Reid and asked Captain Hinneberger of the boat Ivy City for passage to this city. The boat met a dredging scow near the great trough and Twigg boarded the scow taking a whip that belonged to the captain. The captain sent a colored boy, Frank Williams to retrieve the whip. Twigg refused to give it up and Hinneberger then gave the colored boy a pistol to get the whip even if he had to shoot Twigg. The boy returned to the scow and Twigg again refused to surrender the whip, and was shot dead.

WEISENMILLER 22 Nov 1894 Mrs Margaret Weisenmiller, mother of John, Adam, and Frederick Weisenmiller died last night at her residence on Dilley Street, 83 years of age. The funeral is tomorrow from the German Lutheran Church with interment in the German Beneficiary Cemetery on the Baltimore Pike.

WELSH 30 Mar 1894 Mrs John Welsh of Hyndman PA died yesterday morning. The body was brought over the Pennsylvania RR and thence to Hazen where interment will take place.

WILLISON 02 Jan 1894 Mr Thomas Hilleary Willison died suddenly at his home on Martin Mountain, 9 miles from the city yesterday evening. He had been on a fox hunt and after skinning his bounty, felt badly and laid down on the bed and was soon dead. The funeral is tomorrow at Fairview Church.

WILSON 02 Jan 1894 Mr Harry G Wilson, son of Mr & Mrs Jonathan Wilson of Flintstone married Miss Grace Stotler, daughter of Mr & Mrs Morgad Stotler of Rawlings MD on Dec 29, 1893.

WILSON 10 Jan 1894 Mr Isaac Wilson, a prosperous farmer, died Sunday (Jan 7) at his home in Black Valley near Flintstone, aged 76 years, 9 months, and 8 days. He was buried in the family plot at Murleys Branch beside his wife "Aunt Cassie". His funeral was preached in the ME Church South in Flintstone by Rev Funkbiner of the Lutheran Church.

WILSON 09 Jul 1894 Mrs Emma Wilson, wife of O S Wilson, the hardware dealer, died yesterday at her residence of S Liberty Street after a long and painful illness. Mrs Wilson was the daughter of Mr John Fisher of near Flintstone. She leaves a husband and 3 sons, the oldest is but 14 years old. Burial is today at the IOOF cemetery after funeral services from the home, Rev Nicholson officiating.

WILSON 19 Jun 1894 Mrs Jemima Wilson, widow of the late James Wilson of Rush and a daughter of Jacob Browning of Black Valley, died at her home in Flintstone on Sunday (17 Jun). She was buried today at the family burying ground near Rush with Rev harris of the ME Church at Flintstone preaching the sermon. She was the mother of four children; the late Mrs Albert Bottenfield of Rush; Hamberry Wilson; and Drs. Jacob J and L B Wilson of Cumberland.

WINEOW 04 Aug 1894 Mrs Mary R Wineow died Thursday (2 Aug) at the home of a daughter Mrs Alexander Adams on Decatur Street in her 70th year of age. She had suffered for two weeks from prostration from the heat. She was the widow of Henry D Wineow who died in 1865, her maiden name being Mary R Weldon. She was the last of three daughters of that family. She leaves two children, Mrs Alexander Adams and Mr Mason Wineow, formerly of the B&O roundhouse and now of Bakersfield CA. She was a devoted member of the Centre Street M E Church where funeral services will be held today with burial in the church cemetery.

ZIMMERLY 14 Aug 1894 Mrs Sallie Zimmerly died Sunday morning (12 Aug) at her residence just outside the city on the Baltimore Pike. Only 3 months ago, Mrs Zimmerly's husband Samuel, was buried. Interment was made at Greenmount Cemetery on the Baltimore Pike.

ZIMMERLY 05 May 1894 Mr Samuel Zimmerly died at his residence on the Baltimore Pike yesterday. He was in his 82nd year and death was expected for some time due to old age. He lived in the city all of his life, the last 30 years in retirement. Besides his wife there are 6 grown children, 4 of whom are married, to survive. Funeral is tomorrow with interment in the Greenmount Cemetery.
