ALDERTON 08 Oct 1903 Marriage Licences- Albert Alderton, 25, of near Oldtown and Mary A Barnes, 20, of Piney Grove.

ANDREWS 20 Feb 1903 Mrs Ella Andrews, wife of James Andrews, died at Barton yesterday morning, aged 49 years. Mrs Andrews was a sister in law of Mrs Mary J Young, wife of John W young, clerk of the Circuit Court. A large family of children survives. Mrs Andrews was a member of the Methodist Church of Barton and highly respected.

ATKINSON 21 Nov 1903 James H Atkinson of Frostburg, a government storekeeper and guager at the Braddock Distillery, died suddenly in his office this morning. He was born at Cove Town on 3 Nov 1848, was 58 years of age, a son of Judge Atkinson and lived here all of his life. He is survived by a wife and grown children; Mrs John Holt of Frostburg; Mrs George Arnold of Sand Spring; Mrs Jno. Bartholon of Myersdale; Mrs Joe Drummond of Frost Mine; James Jr. of Gilmore; C.O. Atkinson of Johnstown; William B of Myersdale; Harry W of Eckhart; Jno. L of Grahamtown; George R of Frostburg. The funeral from the home with burial in Allegany Cemetery.

BRADY 31 Mar 1903 Mrs Norah Brady died at her home on Maple Street, Frostburg of cancer of which she suffered for some time. Mrs Brady was born in Longford County, Ireland in 1842. She was well known and lived here and in Eckhart for a long time. Her husband, ex Justice of the Peace, Patrick Brady and these children survive: Miss Katherine, and Messers, John F.; James; William A.; and Joseph-all of Frostburg. The funeral is Wednesday at St Michael's Catholic Church.

BROWNE 27 Jan 1903 Mrs Eliza Borland Browne died Jan 21, 1903, after a 5 week illness with heart disease. Born in Irven, Ayshire, Scotland on 17 Nov 1830, she was 73 years, 2 months, and 4 days old and a daughter of a show manufacturer Hugh Borland of Edinboro, Scotland. On 8 Jan 1855, she married WM. Browne and set sail for America one month later, settling in Frostburg in April 1856, where she has since resided. She is survived by 3 sons and 3 daughters: Hugh L of Pittsburgh; John W of Glenwood PA; William A of Muskeegan MI; Christine at home; Sallie W a milliner; Eliza J a teacher at Beall High School and 3 brothers and 3 sisters living in Melbourne Austrailia. Burial in McLuckies burial grounds.

DOLAN 19 Oct 1903 Andrew Dolan was found dead, having fallen on the rocks of the bed of Wills Creek near the stone bridge in the Narrows. The dead man lived near Twiggtown and was a veteran of the War of Rebellion as a private in the 2nd MD Vol. He is survived by a widow and 4 sons and 1 daughter. One son, Hosen Dolan lives on Wine St in South Cumberland. The daughter Mrs Ed Miles also lives in South Cumberland. (6 paragraphs story on the fall).

DRYER 08 Oct 1903 Mr Henry Dryer died this morning at 8:00 at his home on N Centre St from cancer, aged 44 years. He was a baker by trade being employed by Dryer Brothers. He was a son of Frederick Dryer. He is survived by a wife and no children. Also, these brothers and sisters; George; John; Charles; William; Mrs Nathan Zimmerly; and Miss Maggie Dryer.

EVANS 27 Mar 1903 Capt. Hiram Evans was struck by a train and killed at his home in Seymour IA. The deceased was born in Chaneysville PA on 19 Jun 1819, and was a son of James Evans. He married Jane Robinson of Morgantown WV. Mr & Mrs Evans went west about 55 years ago. He served in the war of rebellion, rising to the rank of Captain. He was a brother to Capt. NC Evans, late of Everett PA, deceased. His wife and 5 children and these brothers and sister survive him: William of WV; Daniel, Aaron, and Joseph of IA; and Mrs JW Snyder of Everett PA.

FELDMAN 28 Mar 1903 George P Feldman died at Eckhart last night, aged 69 years. He was a boss carpenter for the Consolidation Coal Co. He was born in germany and came here when young. He leaves a large family. Mrs Patrick O'Rourke and Mrs William P Sullivan are two daughters in Frostburg; and Mrs John Marshall, Mrs Kate McMullen, Misses Mary E., Regina, and Lillian of Eckhart; and Messers George, James, Joseph, and Lawrence all of Eckhart. Services in St Michaels Catholic Church and Cemetery.

FISHER 04 Sep 1903 The Fisher family reunion in Pleasant Valley, 9 miles east of Cumberland, with Mrs Margaret Fisher age 74 as hostess, and all 9 of her living children present. (5 paragraphs story).

GERLACH 11 May 1903 Mrs William Gerlach Sr. died on Saturday (9 May) of stomach trouble, aged 68 years. The following children survive her: Jacob of Long MD; George, William, and Philip of Frostburg; Mrs Walter Keller of Cumberland; Mrs Lewis Watson of Nashville NH; Mesdammes, H Goeble; JJ Foster; FB Hamill; and Miss Maude of Frostburg. Funeral services from the German Reformed Church and burial in the German Cemetery.

GRIFFITH 24 Sep 1903 Marriage of Mr Daniel Krapf, a son of Mr Zoak Krapf of federal Hill and Miss Annie Griffith, a daughter of the late William Griffith and sister of Councilman Griffith, at the home of the bride's parents by Rev. FR Wagner of St Paul's Lutheran Church-Frostburg.

HAMILTON 20 May 1903 Mr Levi Hamilton died this morning at his residence on Columbia Street, aged 73 years. He had been unwell for some months and this morning, while seated in a chair, he suddenly fell to the floor. He was a blacksmith by occupation. Survived by his wife and these children: Mrs Columbia Rice of Twiggtown; Mrs Lafayette Leasure of Union Grove; Mr Frank Hamilton of Grampia PA; and Mrs FC Hendrickson of Cumberland. Burial at Mt Pleasant Church.

HARRIS 01 May 1903 Mr Walter R Harris, formerly of Everett PA, now of Frostburg and Miss Barbara Ellen Miller, a daughter of the late Mr Harmon Miller of Washington Street, Frostburg were married in Cumberland last night.

HENDRICKSON 27 Aug 1903 marriage Licence- William Randolph Rice age 28 of Cumberland and Carrie Viola Hendrickson age 24 of Cumberland.

HINKLE 07 Dec 1903 Bessie Hinkle, 2 month old child of Mr & Mrs WM Hinkle, died last evening at the home of her parents on N Centre St. Burial in St Patrick's Cemetery.

HOOK 03 Jul 1903 Mr George Hook died at his residence in Cumberland Valley PA yesterday evening, aged 69 years. He leaves a wife and 8 children. The funeral will take place tomorrow evening from the Fellowship Church.

HOOK 16 Oct 1903 Mrs George Hook died at her home in the Cumberland Valley on Tuesday (13 Oct), aged about 60 years. Several children survive. Funeral services were at Fellowship Church yesterday.

HUFF 14 Mar 1903 Gilpin Huff, son of Andrew Huff, who lives on Fifteen Mile Creek near Pratt at the lower end of the county, was killed in the lumber woods near Horton WV on the Dry Fork Railroad on Thursday (12 Mar) by a large limb falling on him. His body was brought down on the train last evening and taken to his home for interment.

KANE 16 Mar 1903 Mt Savage MD- Funeral for Mrs Michael Kane was Sunday (15 Mar) from St Patrick's Catholic Church. She was one of the oldest residents and respected by all. She leaves 3 children to mourn her loss; Mrs Joseph Miller of this place; and Messers John and Harry Kane of Washington DC. Mrs Kane was a daughter of Mr & Mrs Philip McMahon.

LASHLEY 23 Apr 1903 Miss Hilda Winters and Mr William Lashley of Cumberland were married at the Methodist Protestant parsonage on Wednesday evening 22 April, by Rev WA Melvin. The groom is a brakeman for the B & O. They will reside at 2 Lena Street.

LEASURE 10 Apr 1903 Dr Thomas Koon was called to Oldtown to see the family of Mr Daniel Leasure. When he arrived, he found Daniel Leasure Jr, age 7 deceased, and his mother and 4 brothers and sisters in critical condition. An anti-toxin was administered, but it is doubtful that it is in time to save 2 of the children. (Note: no follow-up story found in newspaper).

LINDNER 20 Feb 1903 Mrs Christiana Lindner died at the home of her son Lawrence on Goethe Street yesterday. The deceased was a pioneer resident of Cumberland having resided on the Baltimore Pike for many years, where the Lindner family possessed a large farm and for whom the village of Lindnerville was named. Three sons survive, Lawrence, Frank, and George all of this city. Mrs lindner's husband died several years ago. Funeral and burial at St Peter & Paul Catholic Church and Cemetery.

LOGSDON 10 Apr 1903 Mrs Hannah Logsdon, formerly of Frostburg but now of Omaha NE, died there on Tuesday (7 Apr) of severe hemorrhage of the lungs. She was born in Dowles, South Wales in 1843, coming to this country some years ago. She is survived by children: Mesdammes, Ruth Kennely and Marring of Wainsburg VA; Anna Rose of Omaha NE; and Messers, Arthur and James of Frostburg MD. The body was brought here for interment in the family plot in Allegany Cemetery.

LYNCH 19 Mar 1903 Prisoner Married- Mr Patrick Lynch of the Somerset County Jail, convicted of a charge of cruelty to animals and then failed to pay the $25 fine, became a bride groom in the parlor of Sheriff Coleman, thus ending his stay after paying the fine. Mr Lynch is a native of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, but has been living in Berlin PA where he met the girl who is now his wife. Esquire Josiah H Pizel of Somerset County performed the ceremony and Deputy Begley acted as the best man. Lynch paid the fine and costs amounting to $92.53 and secured his freedom from jail.

MASON 31 Mar 1903 The will of William Mason, who shot himself at Hyndman last week is dated 2 Jun 1897 and includes; son-James H Mason; son-Jesse D Mason; son-Joseph O Mason; daughter Clara married to James M Kennell; deceased son-Austin Mason's children John Mason and Ruth Mason; son-Oliver Shannon Mason; and daughter-Rosa Lee. McCOY 04 Aug 1903 Edward McCoy died last evening at Gilpin, aged 70 years. He had been a resident of the Flintstone district all of his life. He is survived by several grown children, among them; Thomas and Archibald McCoy of this city; Olive McCoy of Corrigansville; and Mrs Jesse Willison, also of Corrigansville. The funeral is tomorrow with burial in the family graveyard at Gilpin.

McELFISH 08 May 1903 Mr Philip McElfish, who resides out Baltimore Pike, near the Wolfe's Mill, came down from Hyndman this morning and stated that his father-in-law, Mr Samuel Bennette, was taken to an insane asylum near Harrisburg yesterday having suddenly become insane. The cause of Bennette's insanity is attributed to the persistent use of hair dye. He had a horror of grey hair and stated that he couldn't bear to look into a mirror and see his hair turn grey and for that reason, he kept his hair and whiskers dyed a deep black for the past two years or more from some kind of preparation. The physician who attended Bennette prior to his having been sent to the asylum thinks that the dye went to the man's brain.

McELFISH 14 May 1903 Mrs Mildred F McElfish and son Roscoe, aged 15 years, living on Virginia Avenue and a Miss Keller, who lives nearby, were held prisoner by the electricity of a wire fence being grasped by the son, who was connected to Mrs McElfish and finally to Miss Keller, both of whom were trying to extricate the boy from his attachment to the electrified material. They all were finally broken loose but suffered burns on their hands. The electricity came from a live wire in the Grace ME Church that was touching a stove pipe, that carried the current to the roof, then to the waterspout which was in contact with the fence. McELFISH 02 Nov 1903 The funeral of Benjamin Herold, the 2 year old son of Mr & Mrs Philip McElfish was yesterday from the residence, 3 miles east on the National Pike with burial in the Odd Fellows Cemetery-Flintstone.

MIDDLETON 12 Feb 1903 Mr Charles Middleton, a B & O brakeman, died last night at his home on Independence Street, aged 26 years. He has been ill for one week, death due to a complication of diseases. A son of Mr Benjamin Middleton, he leaves a wife and a child. He was located at Pittsburgh until recently when he secured employment here. Funeral from the Baptist Church on Bedford Street and interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

MILLER 20 Jun 1903 Mr Jacob Miller, a much respected farmer, died last night at his home near Centreville, Bedford County, PA. The deceased was 74 years old and leaves 7 grown children. The funeral will take place tomorrow from the Fellowship Church.

MURLEY's BRANCH 22 Jun 1903 A New Venture - Watercress Farming. A Piece of land located at the head of Murley's Branch Valley is leased from Mr Luther McElfish, a prosperous farmer for the purpose of growing watercress. Watercress grows best in winter. The first crop in November and every six weeks until July. (10 paragraph story - no identity of the persons who are to conduct this business).

NELSON 25 Aug 1903 Mrs Andrew Nelson died this morning at 6:00 after a lingering illness of several weeks. She was 60 years old and well loved and is survived by her husband and several children. She will be buried on Thursday. Her maiden name was Jane Porter and she was a sister of Josiah Porter of South Cumberland. 26 Aug 1903 Mrs Jane Nelson died at her home in Eckhart yesterday morning about 6:00 after a lingering illness. She was 60 years of age, being born in Porter's Settlement in 1839. She enjoyed good health until a few years ago when she was afflicted with lung and heart problems which caused her death. Survivors include 6 children; Mesdammes, Kathleen Phillips and Ellen Porter; and Messers George, J.J., John A. and William Porter of Eckhart, and 4 sisters and 2 brothers; Mrs James V Carter; Mrs George Carter, Mrs W Rephorn of Eckhart; Mrs Elizabeth Tibbets of Alabama; Messers, MMT Porter of Eckhart and JM Porter of Cumberland. Funeral services are tomorrow at the Methodist Church with interment in the Porter Cemetery.

NELSON 14 May 1903 Frostburg Marriage: Mr Henry Ernest Weisenborn, Eckhart, and Miss Louise Patterson Nelson of Eckhart, a daughter of Mr Andrew Nelson married last night at the German Evangelical Parsonage.

NELSON 24 Sep 1903 Marriage of Mr Price Russell, a son of Mr George Russell and employed at Consolidation #7 and Miss Lillian Nelson, a daughter of Mr Josiah Nelson of Eckhart married by Rev. FR Wagner of St Paul's Church-Frostburg.

OFTEN 19 Oct 1903 Frostburg- The funeral of the small child of Mr & Mrs Patrick Often, who died at their residence in Eckhart on Friday (16 Oct) afternoon, took place yesterday afternoon from the residence. Rev. Oscar E Wittburger spoke very highly of the child. Interment was made in the German Lutheran Cemetery on Mount Pleasant Street.

PARKER 29 Jun 1903 Mrs Josiah Parker, who died in Vale Summitt on Saturday (27 Jun) morning of nervous prostration, was a model Christian in every respect. The following children survive; Walter T of Vale Summitt; William, Milton, Lewis, and Joseph-all of Pittsburgh; and Mesdammes, Mrs Thomas Sleeman and Mrs Arthur Grey of McKees Rocks PA. Also, a sister, Mrs Sara Baker of Mt Savage and Mrs Sarah MacFarlane of Morantown. The funeral is from the residence with services at St George Episcopal Church of Mt Savage and interment in the Mt Savage graveyard.

PARKER 18 Sep 1903 Mr Walter T Parker, Vale Summitt and Miss Sallie M Hoblitzell of Frostburg were married last night at St John's Episcopal Church - Frostburg. Mrs Parker is the only daughter of Mr & Mrs WS Hoblitzell and a granddaughter of the late Jacob Hoblitzell and of Col. CW Shearer and a very popular lady of those who know her. Mr Parker is a son of Mr Josiah Parker of Vale Summitt.

PORTER 05 Jan 1903 Miss Eleanor Porter, dau of Mr AM Porter will be married next Wednesday (7 Jan) in St Agnes Catholic Church, Pittsburgh, to Mr JJ Gregan of thst city. Miss Porter's sister, Mrs louis Adelman will witness the wedding. The bride to be has been making her home in Pittsburgh and is bright and entertaining.

PORTER 16 Nov 1903 Mr John P Porter, of Mt Savage, died yesterday after a 4 week illness of pneumonia. He was about 65 years, living all of his life here. He was a teamster for the Union Mining Company. He is survived by a wife and these children: Mr John D Porter of St Louis MO; Herbert, Charles, Harry, and Archibald-all of Mt Savage; and Mrs Edwin Goetz and Mrs Christian Lammert, both of Mt Savage.

PORTER 30 Sep 1903 Miss Miranda Porter, daughter of Mr & Mrs Michael Porter of Eckhart and Mr George R Rine of Eckhart drove to Mt Savage last night and were married.

RECKLEY Mr Milton Reckley of Arch Street was sent to the Western Maryland Hospital after injuries received on the Western Maryland RR last night. He and his brother Thomas sought to obtain grapes at the old home place across the river from Paw Paw last night and then sought to catch a freight train back with the fruit baskets. The walked the tracks for some time to a convenient place and fell asleep. They awoke when the No. 10 passenger train came and brother Thomas Reckley awoke in time to roll away from the danger but his brother did not, being thrown aside by the cow catcher. The train continued to Cumberland unaware of the situation. Train No. 4 stopped, then Thomas took his brother to Cumberland and then to the hospital where it was discovered both legs broken, a shoulder crushed and internal injuries. He died 1:00 the next day. He was the son of Mrs Charles Reckley and he is 22 years old. His father was buried 4 weeks ago today. Services at the ME Church.

ROBINETTE 28 Feb 1903 Mr Arthur Robinette, aged 22 years, died this morning at the home of his parents on 50 Harrison Street. He had suffered for many months of pulmonary troubles. The funeral is Monday at the residence with interment at the Robinette burial grounds at Murley branch.

ROBINETTE 17 Jan 1903 Mr Mose G Robinette died at the home of a daughter, Mrs WH Robinette, 50 Harrison Street, this morning, aged 85 years. He was of the Flintstone district and is survived by 4 children: Mr GH Robinette of Baltimore; J Scott Robinette of Newark OH; Mrs WH Robinette and Miss Florence Robinette of this city. The remains will be taken to Rush on Monday and interred in the family burying grounds.

SHUCK 23 Jan 1903 Mrs Maria Shuck, relict of the late Josiah Shuck, died late yesterday at her home on Wine St, due to stomach trouble from which she suffered a long time. Two sons survive, Elmer of Cumberland and Arthur Shuck of Wheeling WV; and 3 brothers, James H and Lee C White of Cumberland; and NW White of Souix City IA.

SMITH 17 Feb 1903 Mrs Catherine Smith, relict of the late Conrad Smith, died yesterday at her home on Walnut Street, aged 75 years. Her husband was killed some years ago by cars and Mrs Smith never fully recovered from the shock of that occurrence. She was a native of germany, coming here as a small girl. She is survived by 1 son, Conrad Smith Jr of the firm of Smith & Dreyer and 1 daughter Miss Anna Smith. Funeral services from the home with interment in greenmount Cemetery.

SMITH 06 Jul 1903 Glen Smith, 11 year old son of Mr JM Smith of Elkins, fell over the Blackwater Falls while on an outing and was killed.

SMITH 29 Jul 1903 Gilbert Smith a son of the late Solomon Smith of Bucks Valley PA and Silas Miller, son of Peter Miller of Little Orleans were charged in a holdup of Shearer's Store and of Glichmann's Store using drunkenness as an excuse and a desire to become a hero like dime novel character Diamond Dick. (A 2 column story). 19 Aug 1903 Reduction in bail hearing not successful. 31 Oct 1903 Guilty of robbery of Robert H Shearer-8 years in the penitentiary.

SMITH 31 Mar 1903 Mr John Herman Smith died last night at the home of his father, Mr John Smith on Columbia Street, Cumberland. He leaves a wife and 3 small children. The funeral is tomorrow from Zion German Reformed Church on N Liberty Street.

SMITH 24 Nov 1903 Leonard D Smith of Ormand St, Frostburg died Sunday (22 Nov). He was ill for 2 days of congested lungs and of old age. He was born 16 Mar 1833 and farmed all of his life before retirement. He is survived by 4 sons and 1 daughter; John A of Frostburg; William, Boyd, and Richard of near Cumberland; and Annie J of Lebanon PA. Burial in Allegany Cemetery.

SMITH 02 Sep 1903 Miss Lavina Smith, crazed by the influence of fortune tellers, drowned herself at 9:00 this morning in the Potomac River under the Blue Bridge. She was 30 years of age and a daughter of Mr George Smith, a B&O repair shop employee and a sister of CG Smith, the Baltimore Street Shoe merchant. Burial in the Greenmount Cemetery.

TWIGG 10 Aug 1903 Factional fight for the Republican Nomination of Candidates involving Dr Twigg, Chairman of the Convention, Mr Robb, Mr Whiting, Philip Roman, and Mr Richard Bruce. (2 column article, 20+ paragraphs). Follow-up stories 20 Aug.

TWIGG 30 Oct 1903 Mr Greenberry Twigg of Frostburg was instantly killed at Klondike Mine #7 of Consolidation Mining Company, being caught between a box car and a steam car loader. Mr Twigg was in charge of the loader and was filling a car with coal when some part of the machinery slipped or broke and the steel arm swung round and pinioned Mr Twigg against the car. Fellow men ran to his rescue but life was already extinct, the pressure having broken many of the bones of his body. Mr Twigg was 52 years of age and leaves a wife and 2 daughters, ages 9 and 5. Burial in Allegany Cemetery.

TWIGG 04 Sep 1903 Mr Michael Twigg, a well known farmer living in the lower part of Allegany County had an experience that caused much amusement in the community. He was at work shingling a barn. He sat upon the stringers allowing his feet to dangle while he nailed the shingles about him. When it was necessary to change positions, he tried in vain to free himself. Several farmers in the area came to his rescue to free him. (2 paragraph story)

WEBER 07 Jul 1903 George Weber died at his home in Cumberland on 5 Jul 1903, age 61 years. He had been ill some days with complications of ailments. He was a private in the Civil War for CO. E, 2nd MD Reg., PHB and for a number of years was a pensioner from disabilities received therefrom. Hw was born on a farm East of Cumberland and a son of Christian & Elizabeth Weber. He was a farmer up until a year ago when he moved into Cumberland. In December 1864, he married Caroline V Smith who survives along with 7 grown children, 3 boys and 4 girls. Burial is in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

WILLISON 09 Mar 1903 Miss Jessie Willison, daughter of Mr & Mrs HF Willison, died Saturday afternoon (7 Mar) at the home of her parents near Flintstone. She was 23 years of age. The funeral is today. She is the sister of Mr Charles Willison of the Flintstone Hardware Co of this city.

WILMOTH 20 Jul 1903 John Wilmoth, a prominent and well known farmer living at Twiggtown, died yesterday. The deceased is survived by a wife and several grown children along with several relatives in this city. He was about 60 years of age.

WILSON 14 Feb 1903 Mr George S Wilson, a farmer of Oldtown, committed suicide yesterday by cutting his throat, aged 60 years. He was found by a son in a field behind a straw stack. He was married only yesterday to a woman from Virginia. He had been ill for sometime and frequently showed signs of derangement. He had admitted his intentions to family memberw who had hidden all arms of the household. He is survived by his new wife, Miss Etta Wolford of Oldtown, formerly of Virginia Flats; several grown children and 3 brothers , OS Wilson of Wilson & Pugh in Cumberland; Simeon Wilson, a traveling salesman of this city; and Rev Wilson of Davis WV.

WINEBRENNER 16 Oct 1903 Mrs Sara Winebrenner, wife of John of near Big Savage Mountain, who suffered from typhoid fever for several weeks, died Wednesday (Oct 14) at 9:30 in the morning. She was 42 years of age and is survived by a husband and 9 children; Henry, Olin, James, Loy A., Rosie, Cecelia, Sallie, Eleanora, Myrtle, and Lucy-all of Big Savage Mountain. Funeral arrangements are in the charge of Gehauf & Mayer. The funeral is Friday at the St Michaels Catholic Church with interment at St Ann's Church on Pea Ridge, Garrett County.

WOLFORD 10 Mar 1903 Mr Ernest E Wolford died yesterday at the home of his father Mr Samuel Wolford near Flintstone. Last Friday, the deceased, who lives in Pittsburgh, came here having been called here on the serious illness of his father. Yesterday, he took ill and died a few hours later. He leaves behind, besides his parents, several brothers and one sister; Mr Frank Wolford of South Cumberland is one of his brothers.
