He leaves a wife and 8 children to mourn his loss; Mrs Emma McKusker; Mrs Lucy Holtzman; Miss Bessie and Miss Gracie; Messers, William, Patrick, Joseph and Daniel Bridges, all of Mount Savage. Funeral services at the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Beans Cove. BRODE 02 Jan 1905 Mrs Philip Brode died at the home of a daughter Mrs Fred Adams at Hoffman's Mines on Saturday (31 Dec 1904). She was one of the oldest and most respected ladies of this area and had a large family, all grown to man and women's estate, and among the best of our citizens. She was for many years an invalid and suffered the amputation of an arm one year ago. She was known for gentleness and kindness of heart at her home in Hoffman. Her husband the late Philip Brode died in 1891 and she leaves the following children: Mrs Fred Adams of Hoffman; Mrs John Scalley of Eckhart; Mrs Conrad Nicol of Frostburg; FJ Brode of Vale Summitt; George & Philip Brode of Hoffman; and John Brode of Cumberland. She was a member of the St Michaels Catholic church where the funeral will be held. BROWNING 15 Feb 1904 Miss Eliza Browning, 20, daughter of Mr & Mrs Henry Browning, died yesterday morning at the home of her parents on Front Street of measles. The remains will be taken to Flintstone for burial. The death of Miss Browning is a result of an epidemic of measles which is raging in Cumberland. CRAWFORD 11 Mar 1904 Mrs Rebecca Crawford died at Robinsonville PA yesterday, aged 60 years. The deceased was married twice. The first husband was David Karnes, a Bedford County farmer who died at Purcell about 20 years ago. To this union were born nine children, seven of whom survive: Mr William Karnes of Cumberland; Mrs Sheridan Clark of Everett; Mr Jno. Karnes of Fossilville PA; Mr Amos Karnes and Mr Jonas Karnes of Hancock; Mr Charles R Karnes of Thomas WV; and Mr Hiram Karnes of Berkeley Springs WV. Her second husband was Mr Christopher Crawford, a well known and prosperous farmer of Bedford County who survives. The funeral is tomorrow at the Fairview Church at Green Ridge. CROWE 05 Feb 1904 Miss Maude Green, age 16, daughter of Mr & Mrs Jefferson Green and Mr Edward Crowe, age 19, son of Mr John Crowe, all of Lonaconing, were caught while trying to elope into Garrett County and marry. The potential groom is charged with abduction. (6 paragraph story). DAVIS 22 Mar 1904 Mrs Annie E Davis, wife of Thomas Davis, died today at her residence on the Williams Road, aged 64 years. She was a native of Licking Creek OH. She was a sister to Cyrus and Virgie Elder of the Cambria Steel Works of Johnstown PA. She is the mother of CE Davis, better known as "Santa Fe". Funeral arrangements are not yet made. DEAN 18 Apr 1904 Mr Joseph Dean, a well known farmer living near Rush, died yesterday, aged about 80 years. He is survived by his wife and 4 grown children. One daughter is wife of Martin V Rice and a son, Hanson Dean, formerly from Cumberland, is now living in Oakland. DEETZ 01 Jan 1904 Miss Lida Deetz died yesterday afternoon. She was the daughter of Mr J Wesley Deetz and was active at the Centre Street ME Church and besides her parents is survived by a sister, Miss Anna Deetz and 3 brothers, Charles C., Robert R., and William R. Deetz. FLETCHER 02 Sep 1904 Marriage of Daniel Fletcher of Piney Grove and Miss Julia Barnard of Moscow MD; daughter of Mr & Mrs Jno D Barnard of Moscow MD. FROSTBURG NORMAL SCHOOL 11 Jun 1904 The first commencement of the State Normal School in Frostburg had Gov. Edwin Warfield to present diplomas. Prof. Murdaugh congratulated the successful students; Misses, Hilda Lambert, Ethel Taylor, and Anna Webster of Cumberland; Misses, Jennie Dixon, Christine McAlpine, and Viola Heppborn of Lonaconing; and Misses Nellie Powell and Nannie Jeffries of Frostburg. GRUBER 13 Jun 1904 Mrs Minnie CW Gruber, aged 74 years, a native of Germany and widow of Matthias Gruber, died Saturday (11 Jun) afternoon of old age at 4:00 at the home of a daughter, Mrs Theodore Cook of 316 N Centre Street. She is survived by the following children: Henry W Gruber a local merchant; Jacob and William Gruber of Johnstown PA; Mrs Henry Reward and Mrs William Blasing of Cincinnati OH; Mrs Cook; Mrs Conrad Zimmerman and Mrs Michael Shertzer of Cumberland. Mrs Gruber came to Cumberland quite young and resided on N Centre Street the greater portion of her time. Besides her children, she leaves a brother, Mr Henry Abling of Jamestown MO. Services are at the German Lutheran Church with interment in the German Lutheran Cemetery. HANKS 20 feb 1904 Everett PA- Mrs Charlotte Hanks died at her home on Spring Street on Sunday (14 Feb). She was aged 83 years, 10 months, and 23 days. Mrs hanks was born in Bush Creek Valley, Fulton County on 21 Mar 1820. Her maiden name was Barton. Her parents were among the first settlers in the valley. They came from Virginia, settling there when it was a forrest. She was married to Jared Hanks on 18 Feb 1840, after which they moved to Warfordsburg for eleven years. From there, they moved to Chaneysville and built and operated the tannery that operated for thirteen years. He then moved his family to Frederick where he died in 1873. Mrs Hanks then moved to Everett, where she has since resided. HARTSOCK 30 Sep 1904 Mr Isiah Hartsock, one of the oldest residents of the county, died yesterday at noon at his farm near Flintstone at the age of 86 years. The deceased was born and raised in the vicinity of Flintstone. He was a farmer for many years, but had retired from active labor several years ago. He is survived by a wife and one daughter, Mrs NP Perrin. Capt. HH Hartsock of this city is a nephew. HINKLE 19 Feb 1904 Mrs Elizabeth Hinkle, wife of Rev Richard Hinkle of Everett PA., died Tuesday (16 Feb) and was buried in York PA. The deceased was born in Baltimore , 15 Dec 1837. Her maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Purvis. She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters; Misses Florence and Carrie Hinkle; 2 sons, Mr Horace Hinkle of York and Rev Herbert C Hinkle of Everett, and 3 brothers and 1 sister, Messers William and Armstrong Purvis and Miss Lou Purvis all of Baltimore; and Mr James Purvis of Kansas. She was a devout Christian and a Methodist. HOOK 29 Feb 1904 Miss Dorothy Beall Hook, aged 8, born Feb 29, 1896 celebrates her first anniversary of birth (due to leap year and calculations about the century). Story is 6 paragraphs long and include a photo. She is the daughter of Mr John Hook III and Miss Emily Johnson. INNMAN MINING CO. 16 Jan 1904 The Innman Mining Co of Bannock Co., Idaho has a one page advertisement to seek investors with a profile of officers and endorsements by local personages: LC Roessler of Cumberland; AB Shaw of Moscow Mills; and John McFarland of Lonaconing. The photos of the officers and of the endorsers are included. KELLEY 07 Nov 1904 The funeral of Mr Michael Kelley, who died at his home on Saturday (05 Nov) at Eckhart after a short illness of pneumonia, will take place Tuesday from St Michael's Church with interment in the cemetery. The deceased was 46 years of age, was born in Eckhart on Sep 11, 1859, and lived in Eckhart all of his life and employed by the C&P RR, and is survived by 8 children as follows: Misses, Ella, Regina, Emma, and Fanny; and Messers Lambert and Leo; all of Eckhart. KIRBY 15 Mar 1904 Mrs Sarah Kirby, wife of Mr Philip Kirby, died last night at her home in Mt Savage. She was 76 years of age and spent the greater portion of her life in Mt Savage. Her husband was a wagon maker and worked his trade in Cumberland, the family residing there for a while. Mrs Kirby leaves besides her husband, these children, all in the Mt Savage area; Messers, William, Philip, George and Mrs George H Rizer (whose husband was killed about a month ago in a clay mine); and Mrs James Crow. The deceased was a sister to Messers Samuel and William Metz; Mrs JHB Mahaney and Mrs William Morehead of this city; and Mrs Kate Muster of Dayton OH; (Messers Joe and George Metz of the Standard Oil Plant in this city are ½ brothers of the deceased). The funeral is Thursday at Mt Savage. LANGLEY 13 Sep 1904 Mr Peter Langley died in his home on Elm St last night after a lingering illness. He was an electrician with the B & O RR. The Langley family have lived here in Cumberland after coming from Frostburg 6 years ago. Besides his wife, he is survived by Mrs Nettie Miller, wife of Harvey Miller; Mrs May Ziller wife of Robert Ziller; Miss Amanda Langley and Charles, Harry, William, and Augusta Langley. Burial is Thursday at Frostburg in Percy Cemetery. LEASURE 28 May 1904 Mr Thomas Leasure, died last night at his home in Hazen, aged 83 years, 9 months, and 29 days. He is survived by a brother, John Leasure and three sisters; Mrs S Turner of Boyington PA and 2 single sisters. The funeral is tomorrow at the Methodist Church of Hazen. LEASURE 06 Aug 1904 Mr Jeremiah Leasure died last night at his residence 82 Union St, aged about 62 years. His death was due to spinal meningitis, primarily caused it is thought, by being bitten by a mad dog..Some months ago, the deceased who conducts a blacksmith shop at Wolfe's Mill and Mr Hinkle were both attacked by a dog suffering from rabies. The deceased went to Pasteur's institute for treatment. He is survived by a wife and 4 children; Nora V., Charles A., Harvey L. and Golda I Leasure. The deceased will have a funeral Monday morning from the home with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. LEWIS 27 Dec 1904 Mrs Elizabeth Lewis of Consolidation died Sunday (25 Dec) after a 2 week illness from a brain hemorrhage. She was born in Brimnour Wales on 14 Jul 1834, where she resided before removing to Frostburg, USA. She was one of Frostburg's oldest and most respected ladies and is survived by the following :a daughter, Mrs H Wellings; and these 5 sons, Messers, Edmund, William, David D., James, and George Davis all from Frostburg; and one sister Mrs Anna Davis of Blan Aven Wales. The funeral is from the Congregational church on Bowery St with interment in Allegany Cemetery. McELFISH 18 Jun 1904 Mrs Owen McElfish, died this morning at her residence near Flintstone, aged 79 years. Her husband died some years ago. Survived by children; Mrs Elwell Ash of Rockwood PA; Millard F. McElfish of South Cumberland; Perry L. McElfish of Pittsburgh; and Miss Mollie and Alva McElfish who lived with their mother. McELFISH 29 Dec 1904 Miss Callie McElfish, a daughter of Mr & Mrs PH McElfish and Mr Lawrence Quinn of Chattanooga TN, were married last night at the bride's home, the Old Six Mile House, 6 miles east on the National Pike. Mr & Mrs Quinn expect to remain in the vicinity of the bride's home for a few days visiting friends and relatives after which they will go to Mt Pleasant MI, the home of the groom's parents where they will make their home. PARKER 08 Dec 1908 Mr Josiah Parker, a well known and highly respected citizen of Allegany County, died at his residence in Vale Summitt last night from a slight attack of pneumonia and bronchitis. Mr Parker had been an invalid for 36 years from an injury to the spine that resulted from a fall that left him a cripple for life. The deceased was born over 70 years ago and was engaged at Eckhart in merchandising with his brother William for a number of years. He removed to Vale Summitt and opened a store at that place with a nephew, Mr Joseph Tippets of Grafton WV. After any recovery from his injuries seemed impossible, his sons took charge of his interest in the business. Mr Parker was a native of the county and in 1858 he married to Miss Eliza Baker of Mt Savage. Mr Parker is survived by the following children: William Parker and Mrs Arthur Bray of Pittsburgh; Mrs Thomas Sleeman of McKees Rocks PA; Milton Parker of Mahoney City PA; Walter T and Louis C Parker of Vale Summitt; and Josiah Parker of New Castle PA. The funeral is Sunday at the Eckhart Methodist Church with burial in the Episcopal graveyard at Mt Savage. PARKER 19 Apr 1904 Mr John Parker, a son of Mr WT Parker of this place, returned from Ohio with a bride. Mrs Parker was the former Miss Cora Deardorf of Big Springs Ohio. They will make their home in Frostburg. Mr Parker is employed in his father's carriage and wagon factory on E. Main St. PARKER 07 Apr 1904 Mrs laura parker, widow of the late AS Parker, died last night in her room over the City Drug Store, of which she was the proprietor. She was the only daughter of Mr & Mrs Peter Payne of Frostburg. She was 49 years old and a nephew and niece survive her. She was a constant member of St Paul's English Lutheran Church where services were held and burial in Allegany Cemetery. On 2 April 1899, her 11 year old son Payne was killed, being thrown from his bike against a large post. On 14 July 1900, she lost her husband due to jaundice. On 21 December 1900, she lost her mother due to a cerebral hemorrhage, age 79 years. PORTER 02 Apr 1904 Amy Porter, widow of Moses Porter who died in 1880, aged 94 years, 7 months, and 19 days, died on Thursday at her home at Scottsdale Pa. Mrs Porter was a daughter of Henry & Rachel Wade and born near Cumberland on 12 Aug 1809. Her mother died at age 46 years and her father lived to age 96 years. Her grandmother, Mrs Augustine Wade was 99 years old at death. She and Moses were married at Wellersburg on 17 Apr 1828 and 15 children were born to them. Still surviving are; James Dennis Porter of Summitt Mines; George W. and Elisha C. are farmers of near Scottsdale PA; Dr. L. Lindley Porter of Roslyn Washington DC, and Miss Lydia Porter from Scottsdale with whom she lived. Also living with her is her sister, Mrs Ellen Arnold from Frostburg who was 82 years old on 03 Nov 1903. During the past few days, Mrs Arnold's oldest daughter, Mrs Sarah Ellen Walsh died at Frostburg. Moses McKenzie, the grandfather of both Mrs Porter and Mrs Arnold, came from Scotland and served for 2 years in the American Revolution as did 2 uncles. Mrs Porter's 2nd son, the late G Ellis Porter of Lonaconing MD on April 19, 1861, after the first shots in Baltimore upon the Massachusetts Troops going through the city, made the first speech in favor of the Union, formed a company of soldiers and became their Captain, later promoted to Major. He was a descendant in the 5th generation of John Porter of Gloustershire England, who was driven from the country for singing his own song which was not complimentary of the reigning monarch, George the First. SHERTZER 12 May 1904 Background sketches of candidates for city council including photos of JM Shertzer, J. Joseph Becker, and Howard M. Fuller. Five successful candidates were Bachman, Smouse, Shepherd, Shaw, and Gardner. SHERTZER 18 Mar 1904 Mrs Henry Damm died last night at her home in McKeesport PA after an illness of about 2 weeks of the grippe. Mrs Damm, prior to her marriage was Miss Margaret Shertzer, a daughter of the late Leonard Shertzer of this city. Mrs Damm was married here and continued to live here until 14 years ago when the family moved to McKeesport. She was the mother of 12 children, 2 of which are deceased and the other 10 living. The body will be brought to Cumberland probably tomorrow and funeral services will be at the German Evangelical Lutheran Church. 19 Mar 1904- The body of Mrs Henry Damm, who died Thursday night at McKeesport, will arrive to Cumberland on the B&O railroad train Number 12 this evening. The remains will be conveyed to the home of Mr JM Shertzer, brother of the deceased, at 349 N Centre St, where funeral services will be conducted tomorrow. 21 Mar 1904- The funeral of Mrs Margaret Damm, who's death occurred in McKeesport, took place from the Trinity Lutheran Church on N Centre St, the pastor of that church, officiating. The pall bearers were Messers, John Dryer, William Markle, W Wright, John Schlundt, John Smith, and Mr Gross. Interment took place in the cemetery associated with the church. Survived by children; Thaddeus of Pittsburgh; Daniel of St Louis; Ross of Cline OK; Ralph, William C. Jr., Scott F., Margaret, Mella and Evelyn at home; and brothers and sisters, Wellington and Sheridan of Billings MT; Scott of Pittsburgh; John O., David O., Benjamin F., and Mrs Joseph Gephart all of Bedford PA. THRASHER 16 Jan 1904 Mrs Mary Thrasher, wife of the late Enoch Thrasher, died yesterday afternoon at the residence of her son, Shobe Thrasher of Bellvue Street. Mrs thrasher was in her 93rd year and unusually active for her age. She was sick only a few days and her death was quite a shock to her many acquaintances. She was the mother of three children; Mrs Schramm of Martinsburg; Mr Shobe Thrasher of this city; and Mrs Charles Ridgeley of Ridgeley WV and 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. The funeral is tomorrow from the residence of her daughter Mrs Charles Ridgeley of Ridgeley WV. TWIGG 16 Apr 1904 Miss Mayme Twigg of this city received a telegram last night announcing the death of her mother at Paris IL. Mrs Twigg was the wife of Eli Twigg, a native of Cumberland and a daughter of the late John Hodel of North Centre St. TWIGG 30 Sep 1904 Mrs Katherine Twigg died last night at her Meadow Hill Farm, about 3 ½ miles from the city on the Williams Road. She was the mother of Dr WF Twigg; Mr J Alva Twigg; Mr Charles Twigg; Mrs HB Dean; and Miss Laura Twigg. Her husband, Mr Francis Twigg also survives her. Mrs Twigg was a native of Germany and was 71 years old. She came to this country when a girl of 15 years old with her parents who settled in Cumberland. She was a member of the methodist Episcopal Church of which she was most active. She was a woman of a charitable turn of mind, especially turning her attention to the care of orphans. Five were adopted by her and raised after her own family of ten children had grown of her care. The funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon from the late residence of the deceased. Interment will be made at the Mt Hermon graveyard. WILLISON 11 May 1904 Mrs Mary Willison, widow of the late Hanson Willison, died at her residence at the corner of Union & Rebecca Streets, aged 78 years, after an illness contracted on 1 January last. She rallied from a severe attack of pneumonia, but became affected with another ailment shortly after which, owing to her age and weakened condition, she was unable to overcome. She was born in Germany and came to this county with her parents Mr & Mrs Adam Hobrook when she was but 13 years of age and became identified with the Lutheran Church. Her husband died 3 years ago. She is the mother of Miss Rose and Archibald C. Willison, Randolph Willison, and Hanson Willison, all of this place. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. WINEBRENNER 05 May 1904 The funeral of Mrs Isaac Winebrenner, who died Tuesday (3 May) at her home near Johnson's, a few miles west of Frostburg, after a lingering illness of dropsy, took place this afternoon from the residence. Interment in the cemetery on the Winebrenner farm near Johnson. Mrs Winebrenner was 66 years old. She is survived by a husband, 6 sons, and 1 daughter; Messers, Joseph, John, James, Floyd, Samuel and Enoch and Miss Highly, all at home. WOLFORD 08 Oct 1904 Miss Hattie Robosson, daughter of Mr & Mrs Dr TP Robosson of Flintstone married on Wednesday (05 Oct ) to Mr William Marshall Wolford, son of the late Samuel Wolford. WOLFORD 25 Oct 1904 Mrs Martha Wolford, wife of the late Hiram Wolford, died at her residence on Martin Mountain, eight miles east of this city on the Baltimore Pike at 1:00 o'clock this afternoon. Mrs Wolford was in her 79 th year and the last of the Wolford family who have been a prominent family of this county for the past century. She leaves 3 daughters to mourn their loss; Mrs Summerfield Hinkle of Rush; Mrs Jennie Bucy of Cumberland; and Mrs William Brant with whom she made her residence. WOLFORD 07 Sep 1904 Mrs Lethe Wolford, wife of the late Daniel Wolford, died last evening at the home of daughter Nannie E Bowden wife of J.A.R. Bowden on the Baltimore Pike, aged 87 years, 4 months, and 20 days. She is the mother of Dennis A Wolford of Ft Wayne IN; and Charles H and John W Wolford of Cumberland. Her husband died in 1900 at age 85 years. She was the daughter of Elisha Robinette of Flintstone. The funeral services from the home of Mrs Bowden to Fairview Church with Rev. Mr Melvin officiating with Rev. Mr Gross assisting.
