ADAMS 19 Nov 1915 James W Adams, the village blacksmith at Piney Grove for several years, died suddenly while eating breakfast at home in Piney Grove. He was 70 years of age and a son of the late Dr Adams of Clearspring. He had operated a blacksmith in Cumberland and near Folcks Mills on the Baltimore Pike. He is survived by his widow, a daughter of the late John McCune of Cumberland and several grown children. The body is at the home of a cousin, H C Oglebay on Waverly Terrace in Cumberland and the funeral will be from there and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

ALLEN 30 Nov 1915 Mrs Arch Allen aged 50 years of Twiggtown, died today at the Western Maryland Hospital where she had been ill for several days of gall stones.

ANDREWS 29 Nov 1915 Mrs Mary A Andrews, aged 39 years, wife of Joseph Andrews, died this morning at her home in Mapleside. Besides her husband, she is survived by seven children: John, Frank, Clarence, Bernard, and August and May Andrews. Also, brothers and sisters, August, Frank J, Bernard Bealky and Mrs Charles Kabosky. Services and burial at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

BARNES 18 Nov 1915 Richard Barnes, 18 years old, died yesterday at the home of his parents Mr & Mrs Edward Barnes in Black Valley near Flintstone. Surviving are his parents, and these brothers and sisters: Luther R Barnes; Mrs Walter Wilson; Lester Barnes of Cumberland; Curtis Barnes of Uniontown; Mrs Ray Willison of Keyser; Miss Ethel Barnes of Baltimore; and Misses Clara and Nellie B Barnes at home. Services and burial at Union Grove Church.

BARNES 27 Nov 1915 Margaret Pearl Barnes, 3 year old daughter of Mr & Mrs Samuel Barnes, died of diphtheria yesterday at the home, 215 Oldtown Road. The funeral is from the home and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

BARTH 04 Nov 1915 Henry Barth, aged 61 years, died at his home in Mt Savage today. He was employed by The Ramsay Brick Works. He is survived by his wife, and three children: Herbert Barth of Milwaukee WI; Edward Barth and Miss Ida Barth of Mt Savage. 06 Nov 1915 Henry Barth, aged 62 years, died at his home in Mt Savage yesterday following an illness of two weeks of Bright’s disease. His mother, Mrs Martha Barth, and brothers, Charles and Frank of Pittsburgh; and George, Lawrence and Robert of Mt Savage; and sisters, Mrs Emma Ridgeley of Cumberland and Mrs Clinton Uhl of Mt Savage survive. The funeral is from the St George P E Church of Mt Savage.

BECK 05 Nov 1915 Charles C Beck, aged 64 years, died at Allegany Hospital today from injuries suffered while supervising the re-railing of a wrecked Eastbound train at Foley PA. He was a native of Wittenburg Germany and came to this country at age 2 years, locating in Cumberland. He was with the B & O RR for 45 years. Mr Beck married Miss Annie Wolf, a daughter of the late Mr & Mrs Louis Wolf of Cumberland, and she survives with children: Mrs Margaret C Rank of Cumberland; and Carl and Raymond Beck at home. Another son, George Beck, 8 years old, was killed on the William Street crossing only 11 years ago. The funeral is from the home, 22 Decatur Street with services from St Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery. BLOSS 26 Nov 1915 Wilbert Bloss, aged 20 years, a son of Mr & Mrs Charles Bloss, died today at the home at North Branch following an illness of three days. He is survived by his parents and these brothers and sisters; John M Bloss of North Branch; Henry Bloss of Cumberland; Walter Bloss of Berkeley Springs WV; and Mrs Elizabeth Courtney of North Branch. The funeral is Sunday with Rev Arbogast and burial at North Branch.

BOBO 27 Nov 1915 Dewey Bobo, an air inspector of the Western Maryland Railroad, died in an accident at Ridgeley yards making air connections to a string of cars. The train shifted while he was coupling the cars, he was knocked down, and the train passed over him. He was aged 17 years and a son of Mr & Mrs Lee J Bobo, who survive, with these brothers and sisters: Mrs Lee Martzfelt of Cumberland; Misses Rachel and Mary J Bobo; and Robert and E Bobo of Ridgeley; and Wardney and Richard Bobo of Moorefield. The funeral is from the home in Ridgeley and burial in Moorefield.

BOOTH 06 Nov 1915 William H Booth, aged 78 years, died at his home in Mt Savage on Wednesday (3 Nov) after an illness of only a few weeks. He came from England 50 years ago. He was a carpenter in the C & P RR shops for years and lately was a sexton for the St George Episcopal Church. He is survived by these children: Arthur, Albert, and George Booth of Washington DC; Frederick Booth of Monrovia CA; and Miss Emma Booth of Mt Savage. The funeral is at St George Episcopal Church.

BOXWELL 10 Nov 1915 David Boxwell of Jackson Street, Paw Paw, WV, shot and killed himself yesterday through the temple being despondent over ill health. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Octavia Boxwell and daughter, Mrs Harry Deneen. The funeral is from the Christian Church and burial in Camp Hill Cemetery under direction of Rev Keesecker.

CARR 12 Nov 1915 Thomas Carr Sr, former resident of Gilmore and of Lonaconing, died at the home of a niece, Mrs James Price at Avilton on Wednesday (10 Nov). The services and burial will be in Gilmore tomorrow.

CHAPMAN 24 Nov 1915 Mrs Elizabeth Chapman, aged 29 years, wife of David Chapman of Welsh Street in Frostburg, died at the home of a sister, Mrs Conrad Weibrecht on Uhl Street after suffering paralysis for 8 weeks. She is survived by her husband; 2 young daughters, May and Anna; and these brothers and sisters; George Mitchell of Pittsburgh; Mrs Conrad Weisbrecht of Frostburg; Miss Margaret Mtchell of Frostburg; Mrs Ase Lohr of Lohrtown; a step-sister, Mrs Philip Pfeiffer of Detroit; a step brother, John Marshall of Eckhart; and Mrs Charles Buskey of Akron OH who was raised in the Mitchell home. Funeral is at the German Lutheran Church and burial in the church cemetery under direction of Rev Harry H Beidelman.

CONRAD 16 Nov Miss Polly Conrad, aged 67 years, died at Allegany Hospital today following a 4 week illness.

CUMBERLAND OLD LETTER 27 Nov 1915 An old letter, found while dismantling the ancient building of the Cumberland Gas Light Company on North Mechanic Street, is 105 years old (1810). Written by William H Welfley a business man of Somerset PA to Jacob Neff, the operator of a pottery on N Mechanic Street and who was married to the ½ sister of Mr Welfley, Margaret Getzbendeiner. His full sister married the late Robert McCleary of Cumberland. Mr Neff’s son-in-law, Emmanuel Easter, succeeded him in the pottery business.

CURTIS 16 Nov 1916 Mrs Lucy M Curtis, 91 years of age, died yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs C W Burke in McCoole. She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs C W Burke of McCoole; Mrs Mildred Dennis of Culpepper VA; and Mrs Ruby Shull of Keyser. The funeral service is from the Burke home tomorrow

DAVIS 27 Nov 1915 Mr Thomas H Davis died Thursday (25 Nov) and his funeral was held from his residence in Keyser by Rev G G Martin of the Southern Methodist Church and burial in Queens Point Cemetery.

DEETZ 27 Nov 1915 Perry Deetz, aged 59 years, died today at home, 312 North Centre Street from asthma following a one week illness. He was a brick layer and lived at Cumberland all of his life. His wife, Mrs Jennie Deetz and 8 children survive: Alvin, Frederick, Perry, Mrs J L Swearingen, Mrs James Quinn of New Castle PA; Mrs Harry Rawlings of Stevensville OH, Mrs Vernon Giles of Tennessee; and Mrs Michael Cosgrove of Cumberland. The funeral is from the home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

DICKEN 29 Nov 1915 Mr Milton Dicken, aged 57 years, who conducted a grocery store, was killed in an auto accident yesterday. He is survived by his wife who was injured in the accident and a daughter, Mrs Wilbur Rice of Maryland Avenue. He had recently moved to Cumberland from Gilpin, near Flintstone. Funeral services at the Centre Street ME Church with Rev Joseph Dawson and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

DIETRICH 29 Nov 1915 Edward A Dietrich, aged 52 years, a conductor of the Cumberland Electric Railway, died at his home 370 N Centre Street on Saturday (27 Nov) of failing health of a heart condition. His wife and the following children survive: Mrs Charles Diggs of Braddock PA; Raymond and Miss Grace Dietrich at home and a brother, George Dietrich of Cumberland. The funeral and services are at St Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

DIXON 23 Nov 1915 Mrs Emma Dixon, wife of Thomas Dixon, a plumber of N Center Street, now removed to Oregon, died Saturday (20 Nov) at their home in Nyssa OR. She was well known in Lonaconing and Cumberland and she was formerly Miss Emma Marshall. She is survived by her mother; her husband; a sister, Mrs Louis Speir of Nyssa OR; and 2 brothers. She was buried in Oregon. [Notice appears 24 Nov also].

FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT 29 Nov 1915 An auto accident at Red Hill, 2 miles below Clarysville killed Mr Milton Dicken of 96 Columbia Street and Mrs F R Kifer of LaVale yesterday afternoon. Injured in the accident are Mrs Milton Dicken and Mr F R Kifer. The wives of these men were sisters. The four were in a pleasure ride toward Frostburg when they met a large car approaching at a sharp curve and, to avoid a head on collision, made a sharp right turn, lost control, and turned over. FLURSHUTZ 22 Nov 1915 J. George Flurshurtz, aged 87 years, and his wife celebrate their 67th wedding anniversary. [Photo and article of 9 paragraphs outlines his life in Cumberland for 70 years].

FOX 18 Nov 1915 Captain Charles Fox, aged 74 years, a C&O Canal boatsman for 61 years, died yesterday of heart failure on Boat Number 10. His body was taken to the home of a daughter, Mrs Harry Brown of 115 Offutt Street. The funeral is tomorrow from the home and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

GARRETT 29 Nov 1915 Miss Sue Garrett, aged 69 years, a former school teacher at Lonaconing, died at the home of a sister, Mrs Laura Sappington at Libertytown MD on Thursday (26 Nov) of paralysis. Besides her sister, Mrs Sappington, she is survived also by these brothers and sisters; Mrs James R Anderson of Lonaconing; Miss Jennie Garrett of Libertytown MD; Mrs Samuel Anderson of Baltimore; Mrs Julia Downing of Newport News VA; Miss Emma Garrett of Fredericksburg VA; Mr Matthew Garrett of Shenandoah Junction VA. GEARY 22 Nov 1915 Mrs Mary L Geary, aged 77 years, widow of Joseph W Geary, and mother of Frank L Geary, a former newspaperman in Cumberland, died Saturday (20 Nov) at her home , 104 Green Street of paralysis. She came to Cumberland March 1, 1899, with her husband, who died six weeks later. These children survive: Joseph W Geary of Pottsville PA; Frank L Geary of philadelphia; Misses Mary E and Cecelia E Geary of Cumberland. Also, brother, Samuel P Town of Philadelphia and ; a sister, Miss Cecelia Town of Philadelphia. The funeral is from St Patrick’s Catholic Church and burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

GRABENSTEIN 23 Nov 1915 Mrs Margaret Grabenstein, aged 80 years, widow of Justus Grabenstein, died yesterday at her home, 30 Marion Street of paralysis after a year of illness. She formerly lived 6 miles out on the Baltimore Pike where she celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary only 8 years ago. Mr Grabenstein died 2 years later. These children survive: Julius, Frank, William, John, Joseph, Edward, Frederick, Sebastian; and George Grabenstein; and Mrs Henry Sawm; Mrs Joseph Goeller; Mrs Edward Naughton; and Miss Katherine Grabenstein. Services and burial at St’s Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

GROSS 08 Nov 1915 Mrs Caroline Gross, who died at the home of a daughter, Mrs George L Wilson of McKeesport PA, was buried at Mt Pleasant Cemetery.

KEEDY 03 Nov 1915 A notice about an article in the current issue of "American Motorist" magazine which describes a photo of George Keedy sitting in the doorway of the octagon shaped Toll House between Frostburg and Cumberland. The photo also is reputed to depict the tall iron gate posts, since removed to the rear of the Cumberland court house, and hence the, historical significance of the gates has been destroyed. This photo has often been used by this magazine and others recently. The magazine is devoted to the subject of good roads.

KENNEDY 01 Nov 1915 Dr J J Kennedy, formerly of Keyser and Elk Garden, now of Mill Creek WV, was robbed of $180.00 and shot and killed on Saturday (30 Oct) by unknown persons. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Mollie Miller of Frostburg and a 5 year old son. He had attended an injured man from a feud of two families and while returning, he was accosted and killed. The funeral is to be held in Frostburg with Rev R E L Strider of Keyser WV and burial in Allegany Cemetery.

KENNY 04 Nov 1915 Simon Kenny’s funeral at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Midland drew a large throng of people. Father Matthews Temperance Society led 70 mourners from the Kenny home to the church. His son, Rev Patrick Kenny of Baltimore, sung the Requiem High Mass and the service was assisted by Rev William McVeigh of Washington as the deacon and Rev Thomas Lennan as the sub-deacon and Rev Joseph Nolan assisted. Preaching the sermon was Rev James Quinn. Interment was made in St Michael’s Cemetery in Frostburg.

KIFER 29 Nov 1915 Mrs F R Kifer, aged 47 years, wife of F R Kifer of LaVale, who conducts a grocery store there , was killed in an auto accident yesterday. He is survived by her husband, also injured in the accident, and one daughter, Mrs Vernon Miller of Long MD. The funeral services are at Centre Street ME Church with Rev Joseph Dawson and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

KIGHT 18 Nov 1915 Mrs Amy Kight, widow of Rev William Kight, died yesterday at her home in Westernport. She would have been aged 93 next Feb 28th. She is survived by a son, Charles N Kight of Sonanitoria TX; a daughter, Mrs Jennie T Nesbitt, who made her home with her mother; and two grand sons, Lawrence Kight of Sonanitoria TX and Dr Charles T Kight of Wilmington NC. An adopted daughter Mrs H B Carrall is on an extended trip through California also survives. The funeral is from the home on Walnut Street and services in the First M E Church at Piedmont.

LAPP 01 Nov 1915 Andrew Lapp, aged 71 years, died Saturday (30 Oct) of miner’s asthma following a long illness. A native of Germany, he resided in Frostburg since he was 9 years of age. He was twice married, his first wife dying in 1902. His second wife, who survives him, was the former Mrs Otto Damm of Cumberland. These children survive: Henry, Conrad, and George Lapp of Frostburg; Mrs T A Frankling of Washington DC; Mrs J M Light of Lima OH; and Elizabeth and Jorn at home. Also, 3 sisters, Mrs Herman Kroll; Mrs Conrad Miller; and Mrs Adam Wagner of Frostburg. The funeral is from the home on E Union Street by Rev E P Skyles of St Mark’s Reformed Church of Cumberland and burial in Allegany Cemetery.

LAUPORT 11 Nov 1915 Lawrence Lauport, aged 6 years, was killed in his home at Westernport from an explosion that fatally burned him. A can of miners powder, about ten pounds, exploded in an unknown fashion. It is supposed that the boy may have rolled the can in front of the stove where it ignited.

LAYTON 05 Nov 1915 Charles Layton, aged 17 years, died at Allegany Hospital yesterday from blood poisoning. He received a leg injury at his home near Oldtown three months ago. The body was taken to Oldtown for burial.

LEE 06 Nov 1815 Mrs Katherine Elizabeth Lee, aged 40 years, wife of Thomas L Lee, died of heart trouble this morning at her home, 37 Beall Street following an illness of 10 months. She was a daughter of Mr & Mrs J B Spicer of Piedmont. Surviving are her parents, husband, and eight children: Misses Hallie and Ethel and James, Thomas, Clarence, Louis, Thornton, and Charles. Also, a brother, Charles Spicer of Grafton WV and sisters, Mrs Bissett of Luke MD; Misses Clara and Luperapra Spicer of Piedmont and Miss Lillian Spicer of Cumberland. The funeral is at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

LIPTON 24 Nov 1915 Mr Charles H Lipton died yesterday at his home in Piedmont of typhoid fever after a month of illness. He was a fireman for the B & O RR. A wife and 6 children survive.

LOWERY 18 Nov 1915 Mrs ElizabethLowery, aged 63 years, died last night at her home, 38 Walnut Street, of heart trouble after a long illness. Her husband Thomas Lowery, a watchman of the Western Maryland Railroad at Elkins survives with 3 daughters and a son: Mrs William Cale; Mrs Harry Brant; Mrs Oscar Porter, all of Cumberland; and James Lowery of Elkins WV. Services are from the home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

LYONS 13 Nov 1915 Mrs Marie Catherine Lyons, aged 67 years, died at her home in Terra Alta of paralysis. Surviving are 2 sons, J E Howell of Keyser; Charles C Howell of 120 Pennsylvania Avenue, Cumberland; and one daughter, Mrs A J Johnson. She was a member of the United Brethern Church.

McCOY 04 Nov 1915 The 2 month old child of Mr & Mrs Hugh McCoy, who died on Tuesday (2 Nov), was buried at Fellowship PA Cemetery following services at the McCoy residence in Ridgeley WV.

McKENZIE 15 Nov 1915 A 10 month old child of Mr & Mrs Lawrence McKenzie died yesterday and was buried form the home in Pekin, into the St Gabriel’s Cemetery beside another child of 2 years who died last week.

MERRBACH 23 Nov 1915 Gottlieb Merrbach, aged 62 years, a miner, died on Sunday (21 Nov) in Lonaconing of apoplexy. He was born in Germany in 1853 and came to America with his parents while quite young. They settled in Barton where he lived until moving to Lonaconing 15 years ago. Besides his wife, there are 8 grown children who survive: Mrs Robert Wilson of Wendell WV; Mrs William Williams of Mt Savage; Mrs Murphy of Pittsburgh; and Messers, Robert, Fred, John, James, and Archibald Merrbach, all of Lonaconing. Also, 4 brothers and 4 sisters; Messers Theodore and John of Frostburg; Henry of Shades Mills; and William of Meyersdale; and, Mrs Charles Brode of Sharon PA; Mrs John Livingood of Salisbury PA; Mrs Charles Voghman of Meyersdale PA and Mrs John Phillips of Frostburg. Services in Rockdale and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

MILLER 16 Nov 1915 Joel Miller, aged 75 years, an Amish bishop, died at his home near Frostburg on Sunday (14 Nov). A native of Chestnut Spring, he was active in the establishment of the Orphans Home on a 7-acre tract on the farm of his brother, Jacob Miller near Grantsville. He is survived by his wife and 3 sons; Jonas Miller of Grantsville; Alvin Miller in OH; Milton Miller at home, also an Amish bishop. Also, 3 daughters, Mrs Louise Schruck, Mrs Simon Yoder, and Mrs Harvey Yoder, all of Grantsville. The funeral is at the Amish Church with burial in the church cemetery with Bishop Christopher Bender of Grantsville.

MOORE 16 Nov 1915 Edna Moore, 6 years old, daughter of Mr & Mrs Jno Moore of Gilmore, has her sight restored at the Presbyterian EENT Hospital, Baltimore. [ Article is 6 paragraph story].

NAUGHTON 27 Nov 1915 Thomas Naughton died Wednesday (24 Nov) at the home of a daughter, Mrs O T Kidwell of Keyser. He was past 90 years of age. A native of Ireland, he came here as a youth engaging in farming. Surviving are two daughters; Mrs O T Kidwell and Mrs Warner Kidwell and also, 4 sons, Patrick of Keyser; John of Piedmont; and Thomas Naughton of Keyser. The funeral is from the home of his daughter and services and burial in the Catholic Church of Westernport.

NEFF 03 Nov 1915 Marriage Licence issued to Michael Richvalsky of Eckhart and Bernice Madeline Neff of Mt Savage.

O’ROURKE 24 Nov 1915 Hugh O’Rourke, aged 41 years, a brother of Patrick O’Rourke of Midland died in the Wilkinsburg PA hospital. He had been in ill health and spent some time in Wilkinsburg with relatives. He was born in Ocean and lived in the midland area all of his life. Surviving are; his aged mother, Mrs Alice O’Rourke; and brothers, Patrick of Midland and Martin of Westernport. The funeral is from his brother’s home in Midland and services in St Joseph’s Catholic Church.

PATRICK 10 Nov 1915 Helen Patrick, aged 6 years old, daughter of Mr & Mrs James Patrick of Piedmont, died of Bright’s disease at the Western Maryland Hospital last night. The funeral is from the home on Westernport Hill with Rev H H Wheeler of the ME Church, South in Cumberland and burial in Philos Cemetery.

PENDLEBERRY 29 Nov 1915 Mr Eli Pendleberry, aged 73 years, died Saturday (27 Nov) of miners asthma at his home in Detmold after a long illness. Born at Keith England in 1842, he came to America in the 1880's, locating first at Pittsburgh, removing to Midland until 1884 and then locating in Lonaconing. Mrs Pendleberry died several years ago. He is survived by these children; Messers Eli Jr; Thomas; and Richard Pendleberry and Mrs Robert Dodds; and Misses Myra, Mary Ann, Katherine, and Edith Pendleberry , all of Lonaconing. A brother Richard Pendleberry lives at Keith England. Burial is in Oak Hill Cemetery.

PIERSON 09 Nov 1915 Isaac Pierson, 67 years of age, retired farmer of Bedford County PA, died yesterday at Western Maryland Hospital of euysisipelas. He was brought to Cumberland for treatment and the body will be shipped back to Bedford for services and burial.

POLLOCK 16 Nov 1915 Mrs Robert Pollock was seriously burned about the face and arms as she struck a match to ignite the gas burner. Gas had leaked and accumulated in the oven and exploded.

PORTER 10 Nov 1915 Thomas Glissan Porter, aged 70 years, died today at his residence 304 Greene Street from a stroke of paralysis suffered a few days ago. He was born on 20 Feb 1845, a son of Thomas M and Ann Porter in Frostburg, living there all of his life until removing to Cumberland 15 years ago. His wife, Miss Mary O’Connor of Boston died 2 years ago. He was with the Borden Mine Co for 42 years and then a book keeper for various firms in Cumberland. These children survive: Owen L Porter of Frostburg; Misses Rose M and Annie F Porter, at home; Lawrence R Porter at home; and Mrs Hugh G Walker of Savannah GA. Also, sisters, Mrs Mary McAllister; Mrs Julia Davis; and Miss Eliza Porter of Frostburg. The funeral is from the home of son Owen on W Main Street, Frostburg and interment in St Michaels Cemetery. POWELL 08 Nov 1915 Mrs Susanna Powell, aged 97 years, the widow of W A Powell of Berlin PA, died at her home. Her husband died several years ago. She is survived by four daughters; Mrs Andrew McQuade; Mrs Charles Coleman; Mrs Ellen Earhart; and Miss Susan Powell of Berlin.

RAFFERTY 30 Nov 1915 Mrs Bernard Rafferty, aged 70 years, former Frostburg resident at Welsh Hill, died at Tunnellton WV on Sunday (28 Nov). She is survived by these children: John and Bernard Rafferty of Tunnellton; and Mrs Charles A Miller of Frostburg; and also, a sister, Mrs Lloyd Ravenscroft of Sand Patch. The funeral is from the Miller home with interment in St Michaels Graveyard.

RAVENSCROFT 11 Nov 1915 William Ravenscroft, aged 73 years, died of a complication of diseases last night at Miner’s Hospital Frostburg. He was a retired farmer, living 4 miles from Frostburg and once owned the opera house there, then known as the Ravenscroft Opera House.

RICKAMORE 20 Nov 1915 Mr Benjamin Rickamore, aged 70 years of Keyser, was fatally injured in a runaway carriage and died Thursday (Nov 18) without regaining consciousness at the Hoffman Hospital in Keyser. Her husband and 2 children survive; Miss Bessie Riley, at home; and Mrs Richard G Fisser of Cumberland. The funeral services at the Kingsley Methodist Church with Rev David Pyle and burial in Rose HIll Cemetery.

RUEHL 15 Nov 1915 Mrs Martha Elizabeth Ruehl, aged 80 years, the widow of John Reuhl, died yesterday at her home 53 Columbia Street after an illness of several weeks. Three sons survive: William, Harry, Frederick Ruehl and two daughters, Mrs Conrad Rudolph and Mrs Elizabeth Smith, and 21 grand children and 3 great grand children. The funeral services in Zion Reformed Church and burial at Greenmount Cemetery.

SCHADE 08 Nov 1915 George Schade, aged 81 years, died at his home on Columbia Street yesterday following an illness of three weeks. He was a devout member of the Zion Reformed Church and came to Cumberland in 1868. These children survive: Nicholas Schade of Cumberland; John Schade of New York City; Justus Schade and Lewis Schade of Cumberland; Mrs Herman Krick of Rankin PA; and Miss Martha Schade at home. The body will be taken to Trinity Lutheran Church for services and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

SCHAFFER 10 Nov 1915 Mr Madison Schaffer, aged 77 years, died last night at his home, 3 Rolling Mill Alley. He was a Civil War Veteran serving for 5 years with the 103 N Y Vol, Co. G; and was a retired B & O RR employee for 23 years; and a city plumber for 13 years. His wife and these children survive: Mrs William Shepherd of McKeesport PA; Mrs George Kreiglein; Lewis; Charles; and Edward Schaffer; and Miss Mary Schaffer- all of Cumberland. The funeral is from the home and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery with Rev C F Bergner.

SCHAIDT 05 Nov 1915 Mrs Margaret Schaidt, 82 years, widow of the late John Schaidt, died today at her home 119 Third Street. Four children survive: Charles and William Dehler of her first marriage and Henry and Ernest Schaidt from her second marriage. Funeral services in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev Gallmaier and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

SHAW 11 Nov 1915 Alvin O Shaw, aged 36 years, a miner of Barton, was fatally injured yesterday as a result of an explosion and died at the Miner’s Hospital today. While at work at the Reynolds Mine of the Moscow Coal Mining Co. It is supposed that he was removing blasting caps from a box when a spark from his head lamp ignited his box causing an explosion. His wife, his aged mother, and one son and 3 daughters survive. The funeral is to take place in Barton.

SHAW 12 Nov 1915 Orville Shaw, 31 years of age, who was maimed by dynamite caps on Wednesday, died yesterday. His mother, Mrs Sarah Shaw, his wife, and 4 children survive. Also, brothers, Harry and Albert Shaw; and sisters, Misses Pearl, Agnes, and Laura Shaw. Rev F I Mumford of the M E Church will officiate the services and burial.

SHEPHERD 30 Nov 1915 Mrs Margaret Shepherd, aged 67 years, died yesterday at her home in Ridgeley WV where she resided with her son, Charles Shepherd and had been paralyzed for the past 6 weeks. She was the widow of the late John Shepherd who died in June 1914. Her maiden name was Carder. These sons and daughters survive: John W; Charles; and Joseph Shepherd of Ridgeley WV; and Mrs Evan Humphrey of Lonaconing. Also, these brothers and sisters, Mr J C Carder, George W Carder, Mrs Mary Myers, all of Altamont MD; and James Carder of Allegany Mines and E G Carder of Glencoe PA. Services are at the Calvary ME Church with Rev Walter W White and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

SKIDMORE 29 Nov 1915 Mrs Mary A Skidmore, aged 66 years, of W Union Street, Frostburg, died today of a brain hemorrhage. She was the widow of her 2nd husband, Noah Skidmore. Surviving are children of the first marriage; Ray Miller of Philadelphia; James Miller and Mrs Carrie Lansford of McKeesport and also, Charles Skidmore of Cumberland and John and Miss Varina Skidmore of Frostburg. Also, two brothers, George and Uriah Jones of Frostburg. Services are held at the First M E Church and burial at the Allegany Cemetery with Rev JH Bickford.

SLOAN 09 Nov 1915 Mrs Elizabeth Ball Sloan, 60 years of age, wife of Dr George Sloan, formerly of Lonaconing, died at home in North Yakima WA, yesterday following a brief illness. A daughter of the late John & Margaret Bell of Lonaconing , she is survived by local relatives; Mr Matthew Sloan and Misses Margaret and Frances Sloan of Cumberland. Also, brothers, former Judge, William R Bell of Seattle WA; John J Bell of Baltimore; and sister, Mrs Marian Bell Van Horn of Washington State. Her remains will return to Lonaconing for services at the Presbyterian Church and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

SOUDERS 29 Nov 1915 Mrs Edith Souders, aged 38 years, wife of Harry Souders, the manager of the United Woolen Mills Co and a daughter of Col. And Mrs J M Turner, agent of the Western Maryland RR, died of peritonitis this morning at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She, her husband and daughter Miss Mabel lived in Clarksburg WV. She also leaves 3 brothers and sisters. Services are in Baltimore and burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.

SPINDLER 29 Nov 1915 Mrs Mary Spindler, 72 years, widow of Louis Spindler, who operated a coal yard and a cigar store, died Saturday (27 Nov) at her home, 26 Elm Street from paralysis. They had no children of their own, but raised Bernard Helbig; Frank J Helbig; Miss Mary Helbig; and also, Walter S Helbig of Anarondo MT. The funeral services and burial at the Sts Peter & Paul Chruch.

SPOTTS 10 Nov 1915 Mrs Rebecca Spotts, aged 80 years, died at the home of a son, Mr O F Spotts on Orchard Street, Keyser, following months of illness. He is survived by his son, O F Spotts; brother, O A Gatrell of Martinsburg; sisters, Mrs Mollie E Turner of Hedgesville; and Mis Lizzie Helferstory of Washington DC. The funeral is from the home and burial in Queens Point Cemetery.

SWAGER 30 Nov 1915 Isaac Swager, aged 71 years, died Thanksgiving Day (25 Nov) at his home in New Germany. He was a Union Veteran in the Civil War and death was sudden and unexpected, just after eating dinner. His wife and these children survive: Richard, Casper, and William Swager of New Germany; Gurney Swager of PA; Mrs Ann Matthews of thomas WV; Mrs Jones Ravenscroft of Miller mines; Mrs Dessie Jenkins and Mrs Margaret Junkins of Blaine WV; and these brothers and sisters; Henry, Charles, and Samuel Swager, Mrs Mary Otto; Miss Mariah Swager of Garrett Co; and Mrs Richard Harvey of Frostburg. Services and burial at the German Reformed Church of New Germany.

THRASHER 12 Nov 1915 Joseph Thrasher, aged 22 years, son of James & Eliza Thrasher, died of typhoid fever today at his home in Rawlings following an illness of 7 weeks. His parents, and these brothers and sisters survive: James W of Morgantown; E Thrasher of Rawlings; Robert T, Nelson, and Thomas F Thrasher, all at home; Mrs Robert Weaver of Boston; Mrs E Barnhaus of Morgantown; and Mrs Albert M Dawson of Rawlings.

TILP 15 Nov 1915 Harry H Tilp, a son-in-law of Mr & Mrs Eckhart Beckman of 266 N Center Street, died last night at his home on 6th Street, Washington DC following a brief illness.

TRENTER 30 Nov 1915 Mrs Sallie S Trenter, aged 62 years, died yesterday at home on Springdale Street. She was the widow of Mr George Trenter and is survived by these children; James, Lena, Lucy, and Susia Trenter. The body will be sent to Keyser WV for burial from the home of son James, and burial in the Queens Point Cemetery with Rev Hutseler.

TROUTMAN 15 Nov 1915 Mrs Susan Troutman of 11 Oldtown Road, widow of Frank Troutman, who served in the 211 PA Inf., Co, 1, while in the Civil War, was granted a widow pension of $12.00 per month, D N Brown, her attorney.

TURNER 26 Nov 1915 Joseph W Turner, aged 55 years, died yesterday at Western Maryland Hospital where he was admitted several days ago following a six week illness. Two brothers, W E Turner of Cumberland; and Charles H Turner of Kansas City and two sisters, Mrs Charles E Rhind of Cumberland and Mrs W H Pitzer survive. The funeral is from the home of his sister, Mrs Rhind, 136 N Centre Street and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

WACHTER 22 Nov 1915 Reverdy A Wachter, aged 80 years, died yesterday at his home, 204 Virginia Avenue following a brief illness. His wife and two children survive: Larvena and Carl Wachter. Also, a sister, Mrs George L Broadup. He was a baggage master for the B & O RR. Services will be at St Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev Carl Bergner and the body will be shipped to Frederick for burial in Mt Olive Cemetery.

WALKER 24 Nov 1915 Mr R A Walker died on Monday (22 Nov). He was formerly a B & O RR freight employee and later resigned to conduct a confectionary store on Virginia Avenue. He is survived by his wife the former Miss Elizabeth Hansrath of Eckhart and two sons, Lawrence and Carl Walker. The burial took place at Frederick MD.

WALSH 12 Nov 1915 Albert Walsh, aged 16 years, who was killed in a mine accident at Thomas WV, was buried today at St Michael’s Church Cemetery with a Requiem High Mass by Father Dolan.

WILLETTS 16 Nov 1915 Francis Willetts, aged 63 years, died of grippe at the family home, 103 Center Street, Frostburg yesterday. Born in Gloustershire, England, he came to America in 1881, settling on Welsh Hill, moving to Midlothian, and then to Frostburg. Eight children survive: Thomas of Cumberland; Frank of Midlothian; Samuel of Akron; Mrs Alexander McGregor of Frostburg; Mrs Hugh Duncan of Midlothian; Mrs John Duncan and Mrs Paul Carpenter of Turtle Creek PA; and Mrs Thomas Brimlow of Lebanon KS. A sister and a brother in England also survive.

WILLISON 04 Nov 1915Jane Willison, the 4 year old daughter of Mr & Mrs Arthur Willison was burned to death yesterday when her clothing caught fire from an open gas stove. She was playing near the stove when the accident occurred and she died at Allegany Hospital as her body was burned to a crisp before the flames could be extinguished. Mr Willison, the father, was out of town when the incident occurred. Mrs Willison was formerly, Miss Isabella Warfield of Cumberland and a sister of John R Warfield and a niece of Perry Warfield. The funeral will take place tomorrow with Rev James E Moffatt officiating and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

WILSON 10 Nov 1915 Mrs Henry Wilson, aged 50 years, died of dropsy at her home in Corrigansville yesterday. She is survived by her mother, Mrs Caroline McCoy of Washington PA, husband and seven children: Mrs Charles Dean of Washington PA; William Wilson of Cumberland; Mrs A J Lowery of Franklin PA; Mrs Charles Milbert at home; Mis Isaac Johnson of Cumberland; Mrs Charles Johnson of Duquense PA; and Mrs Emma Johnson of home.

WISNER 15 Nov 1915 Franklin H Wisner, 8 weeks of age, son of Mr & Mrs Clarence Wisner, died Sunday (14 Nov) at the home, 7 Beall Street following one week of illness. Burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery.
