ALLEN 04 Oct 1916 Alice A Allen, aged 5 years, daughter of Mr & Mrs A W Allen of 99 Frederick Street died yesterday after a brief illness. Services in St Paul’s Lutheran Church and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

ANGELESE 30 Oct 1916 Frostburg- Joseph Angelese, aged 32 years, of Morantown, died Saturday (28 Oct) of bronchial trouble. He was employed at Union Mine #2. His surviving family in Italy are his wife, a son, and a daughter. Burial in St Michael’s cemetery.

BAIRD 18 Oct 1916 Romney WV- William Nelson Baird, aged 62 years, died on Monday (16 Oct) of Bright’s disease of several years. Born in Connellsville, he was employed on the B&O RR and for Kenneweg’s Co. Twice married, his first wife was a daughter of Dr R W Daily and these children survive; Robert Baird; William Baird; Benjamin Baird; Miss Rebecca Baird; and Miss Jean Baird. His second wife, who survives, is a daughter of the late Governor John J Jacobs. Also surviving are his father of over 90 years of age at Washington DC; a brother, Absolom Baird; and a sister, Mrs Remsberg. Services and burial from St Stephen’s church.

BALL 14 Oct 1916 Franklin G Ball, aged 72 years, died today at the home of an only son, L W Bell of 139 Maryland Avenue after an illness of one year. Burial in Greenmount Cemetery.

BAZZEL 12 Oct 1916 Keyser- Mrs Mary Bazzel, wife of W P Bazzel, died. A daughter of Mr & Mrs R N Fout who survives her, along with her husband; and these daughters; Mrs Willis Pollick; Mrs Robert Fisher; and Miss Beatta Fout; and three brothers at Purgitsville; and a sister, Mrs George Ludwig at Purgitsville. Burial at the home grounds at White Oaks Flats.

BEEMAN 09 Oct 1916 Lonaconing- Mrs J H Beeman, aged 47 years, died Saturday (07 Oct). She is survived by her husband; a son, Roy Beeman; and a daughter, Mrs James Kirby. Services at the home at Click’s Crossing and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery.

BOYD 06 Oct 1916 Lonaconing- John M. Boyd, aged 72 years, died today at his home at Watercliffe of an illness of several months followed by a stroke on Monday. Born at Cont’s Brig, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on Dec 22, 1844, he came to the US in 1867, living in New York and then to Lonaconing working in George’s Creek Mines in Mine #1, New Mines, Pine Hill and Buck Hill and retired six years ago. He is survived by his widow, Mrs George Ann Boyd; daughters, Mrs george Albright of Cumberland; Miss Margaret Boyd at home; sons, James Boyd of Newlyn WV; and deceased children William Boyd and Hazel Boyd . The funeral is at the Presbyterian Church and burial in Old Coney Cemetery.

BROWNING 16 Oct 1916 Richard T Browning, aged 76 years, of the pioneer family, died Saturday (14 Oct) at his home in Sang Run, Garrett Co. Born in Allegany County on May 23, 1839, he was a son of William Browning and Elizabeth Drane Browning. He moved to MO for two years in 1859, enlisted in Co.I, 2nd MD Inf in the Civil War, and afterwards, held many political offices . He married Harriett C Twigg of Cumberland on April 17, 1874, who survives with four sons and two daughters.

BURNS 07 Oct 1916 Leo Burns, son of Mr & Mrs John H Burns, died Wednesday (04 Oct). His wife in the hospital is too ill to attend the funeral at the St Peter’s Catholic Church at Fairmont WV with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.

COLEMAN 17 Oct 1916 Tri Towns- Miss Marthalena Coleman, aged 33 years, daughter of Frances A Coleman of Piedmont, died Saturday (14 Oct). Services are at St John’s M E Church of Piedmont.

CORDRY 03 Oct 1916 Berton Cordry, aged 24 years, son of Mr & Mrs E H Cordry of Arch Street died today at Western Maryland Hospital following a prolonged illness with cancer. He was the secretary of the Carpenter Hardware Store on Virginia Avenue. His wife, his parents, and two sisters and four brothers survive: Ralph Cordry, Floyd Cordry, Harry Cordry, and Paul Cordry and Mrs Otis Brotemarkle and Miss Cora Cordry at home. Funeral services at Grace Methodist Episcopalian Church and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

COUPE 17 Oct 1916 Mt Savage- Mrs John R Coupe, aged 50 years, died at her home of a complication of diseases. She is survived by her husband and these brothers and sisters; Winfield S Trimble; George Trimble; Joseph Trimble; and Walter A Trimble- all of Mt Savage; and Mrs H G Poss of Rockwell MD. Burial services at the St George Episcopal Church.

CRAWFORD 21 Oct 1916 Daniel Arlington Crawford, one month old son of Mr & Mrs David Crawford died at his home, 32 Baker Street following a short illness. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

CUPPERT 06 Oct 1916 A child of age 3 the son of Rev & Mrs J H Cuppert of near Dodge School House died Oct 3 of infantile paralysis.

DAILEY 06 Oct 1916 Perry P Dailey, aged 34 years, son of Mr & Mrs Lafayette Dailey, died yesterday at his home on Chestnut Street in Mapleside. He is survived by his parents, and these brothers and sisters; William Dailey; Ernest Dailey; Harry Dailey; Orrie Dailey of Cumberland; Mrs Joseph Reckley and Mrs Ressley Robinson of Frostburg; Mrs Theodore Reckley of Kifer MD; Mrs Floyd Middleton of Frostburg; and Misses Sadie Dailey, Winnie Dailey, and Elizabeth Dailey at home. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

DINEEN 05 Oct 1916 The body of John Dineen was found dead in an isolated home on the mountain, 2 miles from Rawlings by W H Berry, a merchant of Rawlings, who was delivering hog feed. He had been dead for several days. He lived alone on a pension from service in Co. B, 168 Rgt., NYV Infantry in the Civil War. A native of County Cork, Ireland, he was born March 1837. A will found in his affects executed in April 1913 named John B Gunning as executor and his estate is left to Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore or his successor. Burial in Sts Peter & Paul Cemetery.

DURKIN 27 Oct 1916 Frostburg- Mrs John Durkin, aged 37 years, died yesterday at her home at Frost Mine after a two year illness. She is survived by Miss Nellie Drummond of her first marriage; her current husband, John Durkin; and, son, James Durkin; and daughters, Miss May Durkin and Miss Genevieve Durkin. Also surviving, her mother, Mrs James Atkinson of Frost Mine; and brothers, John Atkinson and Howard Atkinson of Borden; Charles Atkinson of Allegany; George Atkinson of Frostburg; and Mrs James Gilmore and Mrs James Arnold of Frostburg; Mrs John Hott of Charloroi PA; and Mrs John Bartholon of Akron OH. Services at the St Paul Lutheran Church and burial in Allegany Cemetery.

EMMART 19 Oct 1916 Mrs Eva Emmart, aged 43 years, wife of George E Emmert of the Union Lumber Company, died yesterday at her home at 17 S Centre Street. Surviving besides her husband are; two sons, Paul Emmart and Harley Emmart; and two daughters, Mrs Albert Kendig; and Miss Eva Emmart. She was a daughter of Mr & Mrs E M Ginevan of Oldtown MD, who also survives; and her brothers, Ellsworth Ginevan of Iron Gate VA; and Thomas Ginevan of Oldtown MD. Services are at St Patrick’s Catholic Church.

FOSTER 02 Oct 1916 Tri Towns- John Foster, aged 29 years, died Friday (Sep 29) after a long illness. He is survived by brother, Frank Foster; and sisters, Mrs William Leidy and Mrs Flora Hood- all of Westernport.

FRENCH 09 Oct 1916 William Armstead French, aged 47 years, died during an operation at Oakland CA. He was a son of the late Capt. Robert French of the B&O RR; brother of the late C Lee French, chief of the Cumberland Division of the B&O RR. Surviving are brothers: George J French of Cleveland OH; and Robert E French of Los Angeles CA; and sisters, Mrs C D Bopst of Los Angeles CA and Mrs Belle Troxell of Cumberland. The funeral i s in California and burial is at Rose Hill Cemetery.

GETTY 06 Oct 1916 Tri-Towns Mrs Mary C Getty, widow of John Getty died yesterday at Westernport. Surviving children are: Michael Getty; Joseph P Getty; Charles Getty; Mrs Joseph McKane; Mrs H C Walker; and Miss Beatrice Getty; all of Westernport; John F Getty of Elkins WV; Frank Getty of Gleason WV; and Mrs Bush H Farrell of Cumberland.

GRACE 18 Oct 1916 Miss Lizzie Grace, the oldest sister of the Grace family died on Saturday (14 Oct) at her home in South Branch. Burial is from the South Branch Presbyterian church and burial in the family cemetery.

HARPSTER 23 Oct 1916 Dr Harry W Harpster, a physician of Oldtown, died Saturday (21 Oct) of a long illness of Bright’s disease. Surviving are his wife and a son and a daughter.

HEAVENER 23 Oct 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Elizabeth Heavener, aged 77 years, a native of Germany, and a widow of John Heavener died Sunday (22 Oct) at the home of a daughter, Mrs Mack Black of Allegany. Her first husband was Charles Fersterman and two sons from that union survive; John Festerman of Frostburg, and Christopher Festerman of Akron OH; and two daughters; Mrs Daniel Orndoff of Braddock PA; and Mrs Mack Black. George Eisel of Frostburg is a surviving brother. Burial in Allegany Cemetery.

HENKLE 13 Oct 1916 Carl H Henkle, aged 22 years, was killed yesterday when a Western Maryland Railway excursion train headed from Elkins to Hagerstown MD for the races, met with a labor train at Knobmount. He is survived by his parents, Mr & Mrs Carl Henkle of 49 Lena Street; and these brothers; William Henkle and Alfred Henkle; and these sisters, Mrs James Young and Misses Bertha Henkle and Lulu Henkle. Services at St Luke’s Lutheran Church.

HESSEN 07 Oct 1916 Herman Hessen, aged 89 years, died Thursday (05 Oct ) at his home in Oakland MD and is survived by son, Herman O Hessen of Washington DC.

HINKLE 10 Oct 1916 Summerfield Hinkle, aged 66 years, a well known farmer, died today at his home in Murley’s Branch after an illness of six months. Surviving are sons: Bergman McElfish of Murley’s Branch; Raymond McElfish and Earl McElfish at home; and daughters, Mrs Lottie McElfish of Maryland Avenue, Cumberland; and Mrs John Beagle of Cumberland. Also, a brother, Thomas Hinkle of Baltimore Pike. Burial at Fairview Church Flintstone.

HOGAN 06 Oct 1916 The funeral and burial of John E Hogan, who died yesterday at the Haystack Mountain TB Sanitarium, will be tomorrow at the St Patrick’s Catholic Church.

HOTT 07 Oct 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Isaac Hott, aged 74 years, died yesterday at her home in Borden Mines after a two year illness and two strokes suffered lately. A native of Hagerstown MD, she was the daughter of Mr & Mrs Valentine Alexander and was married twice. Her first was to Simeon Riggerman of Cresaptown with a child, Clarence Riggerman of Shaft surviving. Also, a brother and two sisters survive: Hanson Alexander of Winterset IA; Mrs Rebecca Posten of Altamont MO; and Mrs Elizabeth Morris of Port Republic VA. Burial is in the Cresaptown ME Cemetery.

HUCHESON 27 Oct 1916 James H Hucheson, aged 49 years, died Wednesday at his home in Baltimore of heart failure. A former resident of Lonaconing, he joined the Baltimore Police Force on 17 Jul 1899. He is survived by his parents; a wife, and a daughter; and also, brothers and sisters; Simeon Hucheson; John Hucheson; Montgomery Hucheson; Mrs John Ferrens; and Mrs Joseph Gardner all of Lonaconing; and Archibald Hucheson of Pittsburgh; and Robert M Hucheson of Cumberland. HUFF 07 Oct 1916 Scott Huff, aged 16 years, son of Mr & Mrs Milton Hufff, of Eastern Avenue, Mapleside, died yesterday at Western Maryland Hospital of typhoid fever. Burial is in Terra Alta WV.

KEECH 02 Oct 1916 Stephen Keech, aged 36 years, a Central Fire Department employee, was found dead in bed yesterday at the Tunnell Hotel on Weinow Street. Two sisters survive, Mrs Joseph Greene of Lamont Street, and Mrs Henry Nuse. Burial is at Rose Hill Cemetery.

KELLEY 26 Oct 1916 James Kelley, aged 37 years, a former police officer of Cumberland, died of diphtheria at his home on Bedford Street. He is survived by his wife, and three small children; and these brothers and sisters; John J Kelley; Edward Kelley; Robert Kelley; William Kelley; and also, Mrs Kate Miller and Mrs Harry Hilleary. Services and burial at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church and Cemetery.

LASHLEY 27 Oct 1916 William P Lashley, aged 66 years, a merchant of South Cumberland, died yesterday at his home 130 Virginia Avenue after an illness of two years. He came here 15 years ago from Buck Valley, Fulton Co, PA . He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs Stella Derring and Miss Lillie Ellen Lashley; and two sons, S H Lashley and L D Lashley all of Cumberland.

MATTHEWS 18 Oct 1916 Harry Matthews had his throat cut by John Wonstreet following a quarrel on Monday (16 Oct) at Fred C Snyder’s saloon on Front Street. He died yesterday at Allegany Hospital. The quarrel involved his ability to play the piano. The assailant ran after the attack which was witnessed by many. The funeral is from his home, 16 Frederick Street and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

MATTINGLY 28 Oct 1916 Mrs Theresa Mattingly, aged 30 years, widow of Christopher Mattingly, died yesterday at her home near Zanesville OH. She was formerly a Miss Durbin. Several children and these sisters survive: Mrs Jane Mattingly and Miss Mary Durbin of Zanesville; Mrs Margaret Porter of Terre Haute IN; and Mrs George Brailier of Mt Savage. Burial in Zanesville.

McKENZIE 27 Oct 1916 John F McKenzie, and aged man of Ridgeley WV, committed suicide with a rifle at his home of John Street, despondent over ill health. His son, George McKenzie committed suicide four years ago at Rawlings. He is survived by his wife, and two daughters, Mrs Joseph Monnett and Mrs W C Rowe- both of Ridgeley. Also, brothers, J N McKenzie of Cumberland; George M McKenzie of Cresaptown; Henry McKenzie of Winchester; and sister, Mrs Nettie Alexander of Cresaptown. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

McKIBBEN 14 Oct 1916 Dr. William L McKibben of Buck Valley, Fulton County, PA died on Thursday (12 Oct) after a fall from a pear tree. He had practiced medicine in that area since the Civil War where he had served. His wife and several children survive. Burial is in Buck Valley.

MEESE 06 Oct 1916 Bryson Carlton Meese, aged 2 years, and Joseph Ellsworth Meese, 10 years of age, died of diphtheria in Oakland MD. They are the sons of Thomas E Meese of Paradise.

MILES 07 Oct 1916 Richard J Miles, aged 80 years, died at Cul d’ Sac ID. A former resident of Cumberland, he went west to make his home with son, Ellwood Miles. He was a skilled cabinet maker and was associated with Kennedy H Butler of North Cumberland. He is survived by a son, Ellwood Miles who will accompany his body to Cumberland to be buried at Rose Hill Cemetery.

MORELAND 02 Oct 1916 Viola Moreland, aged 6 years, was struck by an auto at the Six Mile House while chestnutting with her parents, Mr & Mrs Benjamin Moreland. She suffered bruises and cuts.

MOSIER 17 Oct 1916 Nancy Mosier, aged 83 years, died yesterday at Sylvan Retreat after a long illness. There are no known relatives. Burial is at Dan’s Run WV.

MUSSETTER 02 Oct 1916 Frostburg- Miss Ruth Mussetter, aged 77 years, died today at her home in Allegany. She was born in Shade Mills, a daughter of the late Joel Mussetter, a Justice of the Peace for 40 years. She is survived by a sister, Mrs John Edwards and a niece, Mrs Henry Steele, both of Allegany. Also, a nephew, John Mussetter of Homestead Pa. Burial is in the Porter Cemetery.

NICELY 27 Oct 916 Miss Gertrude Nicely, aged 32 years, daughter of Mr & Mrs William Nicely, died today at her home on Maryland Avenue after an extended illness. She was a shipping clerk for Footer Dye Works, burial at Rose Hill.

NICKEL 14 Oct 1916 Mrs Arebell Nickel, aged 51 years, wife of Henry Nickel, died today at her home on Columbia Avenue after a prolonged illness. Her husband, and three sons; Harold Nickel, Lester Nickel and Virgil R Nickel survive; and a daughter, Mrs Marshall Sowers- all of Cumberland. Burial in St Luke’s Lutheran Church and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

NICODEMUS 18 Oct 1916 Mt Savage- Thomas Nicodemus, aged 52 years, a track walker for the Western Maryland RR, died yesterday at Allegany Hospital of a fractured skull after being found along the tracks near Mt Savage. He is survived by a son, William Nicodemus of Pittsburgh; and brothers, James Nicodemus of McKee’s Rocks PA; and John Nicodemus of El Paso TX; and sister, Mrs Anthony Menehan of Mt Savage. This is the third railroad tragedy for the family as Mrs Menehan’s husband was killed only 10 years ago and her son William Menehan just 5 years ago. Burial is at McKee’s Rocks PA.

O’NEILL 02 Oct 1916 Thomas O’Neill, aged 64 years, of Johnstown PA, formerly of Mt Savage MD, died yesterday. His wife died several years ago. A family of children survive; and one sister, Miss Mary O’Neill of Mt Savage; and four brothers; Rev. Richard O’Neill of St Michael’s Catholic Church of Frostburg; James O’Neill of Mt Savage; William O’Neill of Baltimore; and John O’Neill of Pittsburgh PA.

PARKER 16 Oct 1916 Miss Margaret Parker, aged 18 years, daughter of Mr & Mrs John Parker of 5 Boone street died on Saturday (14 Oct) of blood poisoning at Allegany Hospital developed from a pimple on her face, which had been picked at. Surviving sisters and brothers are; Mrs Herman Pugh of Washington DC; Miss Leona Parker, a nurse at Allegany Hospital; Miss Bessie Parker at home; and Frank Parker; and Theodore Parker at home. Services at St John’s Lutheran Church and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

PENNINGTON 07 Oct 1916 Miss Mary Alice Pennington, aged 66 years, died today at her home on Hay Street. Born at Frostburg, she was the daughter of Parker and Elizabeth Pennington. She is survived by sisters, Mrs Andrew Huff; Mrs Lura Morris; and Miss Emma Pennington, who live together. Burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery.

POLAND 04 Oct 1916 Tri Towns- Frederick G Poland Sr., aged 83 years, died Monday (02 Oct) at his home in Bloomington. His wife died five years ago. He is survived by sons; Frederick C Poland Jr of Piedmont ; Howard Poland of Luke MD and a daughter, Mrs Scott Elliott of Bloomington. Burial in Bloomington Cemetery.

RALEY 20 Oct 1916 Daniel Raley, aged 37 years, was stricken with hiccoughs, and then into a coma, and died in the Western Maryland Hospital before any diagnosis could be conducted. A local ball player of some ability, he was the son of Mr & Mrs Albert Raley of Ellerslie MD, and also leaves a wife and five children at Bloomington. And, these brothers and sisters; Ross Raley at Bloomington; John Raley at Richmond; Harvey Raley of Pittsburgh; Mrs William Hunt of Versailles VA; and Mrs John Brewer of Braddock PA. Also, ½ brothers and sisters; Mrs James Porter of Altoona PA; Mrs Raymond Falkner of McKee’s Rocks; Harley Raley of Washington DC; and James Raley of home. Burial is at Bloomington.

REPHORN 26 Oct 1916 Eckhart- Mrs Henry Rephorn, aged 89 years, died yesterday of Bright’s disease at the home of a son, Frank Rephorn of Frostburg. A native of Preussian Germany, she came here 70 years ago and is survived by 12 of 15 children; Mrs Samuel Wolford; Mrs H E Lancaster; Mrs M M T Porter; Mrs George Engle; Philip Rephorn; Frank Rephorn; George Rephorn; George Rephorn; Henry Rephorn; Fred Rephorn; Justice Rephorn; Conrad Rephorn, and Joseph Rephorn. Also, a brother, Nicholas Lydinger of Bedford Road, Cumberland; and sisters, Mrs Barbara Ditterman; and Mrs Casper Mackert of Cumberland and; Mrs Margaret Grabenstein of Johnstown. RICE 28 Oct 1916 Martin V Rice, a former Orphan’s Court Judge, will be buried in MT Herman Cemetery.

RICKER 02 Oct 1916 Lonaconing- Miss Adeline Ricker, aged 39 years, died Saturday (Sep 30) of Bright’s disease, at her home on Big Vein Hill. She is survived by these brothers and sisters, all at home; Mary Ricker, Annie Ricker, August Ricker, Joseph Ricker, Robert Ricker, Thomas Ricker; and a younger brother. Burial services at St Michael’s Catholic Church.

RITTER 06 Oct 1916 Tri-Towns Mr Samuel W Ritter, an insurance agent, died on Wednesday (04 Oct) at Piedmont after suffering a stroke one month ago. Hi is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Lannon; and sons; Leon Ritter and Paul Ritter.

ROSENBERG 16 Oct 1916 Frostburg- John Rosenberg, aged 34 years, a bachelor, died from infirmities on Sunday (15 Oct) at the home of a brother, Geoffrey Rosenberg of Finzel. He was a retired farmer. Also surviving, brothers, August Rosenberg of Meyersdale; Andrew Rosenberg of Finzel; and sisters, Mrs Catherine Tagen of Frostburg; and Mrs Rebecca Stinger of Livonia OH. Burial in St Michael’s Cemetery.

ROWAN 04 Oct 1916 Lonaconing- Mrs Alice Rowan, aged 65 years, died today at the home of her only daughter, Mrs Thomas Hawthorne in Vale Summitt. She is the widow of Daniel Rowan. She is also survived by five sons; Michael Rowan, Daniel Rowan, Patrick Rowan, of Lonaconing; Leo Rowan of Ohio; and John Rowan of Penna. The funeral services are at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Lonaconing.

ROWAN 28 Oct 1916 Miss Catherine Rowan, aged 27 years, of 5 Cecelia Street, died Friday (27 Oct) at Allegany Hospital. She was employed for the Apex Machine Co. Burial is at McKeesport PA.

SCHWEINABART 25 Oct 1916 Keyser- John E Schweinabart, aged 77 years, died Sunday (22 Oct) at home near Elk Garden WV. He is survived by two sons and two daughters; W J Schwienabart at home; and David Schweinabart of Elk Garden and Mrs Morgan Bane of Sulphur WV and Mrs Henry Duling of Gormania WV .

SILLS 27 Oct 1916 George W Sills, aged 78 years, a former resident of Cumberland and now of Indianapolis IN, died at the home of a niece, Mrs William Deffinbaugh of 27 Polk Street. He was born at Cumberland and left here 43 years ago. His wife died last November. No children were born of this union. Surviving are these nieces and nephews; William Piper and Mrs William Deffinbaugh of Cumberland; Mrs Ida Brant; Mrs Clara Piper and Mrs Ella Beall of Mt Savage; Mrs Lillian Warren of Homestead PA; Mrs Fannie Deffinbaugh of Westernport ;Walter Sills; Mrs Bertha Ward; and Miss Effie Sills of Cumberland; and Harry Sills of Newberg WV. Burial services at Indianapolis IN.

SMELTZ 03 Oct 1916 Mrs Pearl Balous Smeltz , aged 26 years, wife of John H Smeltz, died today at the home of her parents, Mr & Mrs Harry C Oglebay, 22 Waverly Terrace of an illness of three months. Two sisters, Elsie Oglebay and Bess Oglebay; and a brother, Crispin Oglebay survive. Burial services at the Centre Street ME Church and interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

SPICER 24 Oct 1916 Angela Adelaide Spicer, a four month old daughter of Mr & Mrs Edward Spicer of 411 Grand Avenue died today.

STARK 05 Oct 1916 Frostburg- Freeman V Stark, aged 23 years, died today at Miner’s Hospital of appendicitis where her parents, Mr & Mrs J W Stark of New Germany brought her. Also surviving, brothers, Orville Stark of Avilton and A B Stark of Meyersdale and sisters, Mrs John P Stevenson of Lonaconing and Mrs Edgar Michael of Westernport. Services at Trinity Reformed Church in New Germany.

STREET 02 Oct 1916 Frostburg- John Street, aged 76 years, died today when picking coal at Mine #13 of Consolidation Mining Co. He was a veteran of the Civil War and was a native of Flintstone MD. A wife and one sister, Mrs Sarah Williams of Allegany MD survive. Burial is in Allegany Cemetery, Frostburg.

STRONG 17 Oct 1916 Margaret K Strong, aged 2 years, daughter of Mr & Mrs Charles F Strong of 219 N Mechanic Street died yesterday at her home after a brief illness. Services and burial at Sts Peter & Paul Church and cemetery.

SWARTZENTRUBER 06 Oct 1916 Fannie Swartzentruber aged 13 years, daughter of D J Swartzentruber of Bortner died of diphtheria in Oakland.

THOMAS 30 Oct 1916 Frostburg- George W Thomas, aged 27 years, died yesterday at Miners Hospital of a spine affliction. He is survived by his father, John B Thomas and his step-mother; and sister, Mrs Edward Miller of Clarysville; and five ½ brothers and five ½ sisters. Also these uncles; Dr William Rowe of Meyersdale PA; James B Thomas of Thomas WV; and Theodore Thomas of Knights Crossing. Burial in Allegany Cemetery.

TIERNEY 20 Oct 1916 Leo Tierney, aged 90 years, a resident of Cumberland for many years, died Tuesday (17 Oct) at the Confederate Home in Pikesville MD. He served the Confederacy in Captain Baylor’s Company, 12th VA Cavalry. After the war, he lived with his brother, Michael Tierney, a Cumberland merchant on Baltimore Street. He then went to live with relatives in Harpers Ferry WV about 20 years ago; and a short time thereafter, to the Confederacy Home. He never married. He was an uncle of Dr Bernard Tierney of Baltimore.

WAGONER 06 Oct 1916 Keyser- Mrs Maria Wagoner, aged 93 years, widow of J J Wagoner died yesterday at home, 3 miles from Frankfort. Seven children survive: Charles Wagoner with whom she lived; Howard Wagoner of PA; John Wagoner of Patterson’s Creek; Tolbert Wagoner of Keyser; Mrs Lewis Largent of Paw Paw; Mrs Charles Johnson of Piedmont MO; and Mrs Martha Dohrman of Patterson’s Creek.

WEBSTER 30 Oct 1916 George Washington Webster, aged 70 years, died today at his home on Bedford Street. He was a Civil War veteran serving in 26th NY Cav., and later transferred to the MD Cavalry. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Annie Webster; and these sons and daughters, George W F Webster, Lewis N H Webster, Miss Sarah Webster, and Mrs Leslie N Nave all of Cumberland; and Mrs Walton Shaffer of Pittsburgh. WENZEK 16 Oct 1916 Margaret G Wenzek, aged 60 years, wife of George Wenzek, died today at her home on Red Hill. She is survived by brothers, William Meyers and Jacob Meyers; and a sister, Mrs Anna J Apple of Beall Street, Cumberland. Services at Zion German Reformed Church and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

WILLIAMS 02 Oct 1916 John F Williams, aged 48 years, died today at Allegany Hospital of heart trouble. He resided on Laing Avenue and was in charge of the Cumberland Brewing Co. storage. He is survived by his wife and six children aged 7 to 21 years; Leo Williams, Frank Williams, Lawrence Williams, Clarence Williams, Mar Williams, and Margaret Williams. Also, brothers; Bernard Williams of Cumberland and Thomas E Williams of Juneau Alaska. Burial in St Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.

WITT 27 Oct 1916 Eva G Witt, wife of John P Witt, died yesterday at her home in Wellersburg PA following an illness of several months. Her husband and four children survive. Burial in the Goetz Cemetery.
