Two sons and one daughter survive. A sister is Mrs Emma Stiffler of Elkins WV. BAILEY / BAYLEY 09 Nov 1916 Lonaconing- Mrs Richard Bailey, a former resident, died at Pleasant City IA of heart failure. Her body will return for services and burial to the home of her mother, Mrs Agnes Kirkpatrick on Jackson Street. She is survived by her husband and two children. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. BENNETT 10 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Jessie Bennett, aged 56 years, widow of George Bennett of Wright’s Crossings, died today at the home of her daughter, Mrs Noah Beeman on McCullough Street. A native of Scotland, she is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Benjamin Nicol of Lonaconing. She is survived by four sons, Benjamin Bennett; Gregory Bennett; and William Bennett of Kempton WV; and Porter Bennett of Eckhart; and six daughters, Mrs Lee Blubaugh; Mrs Noah Beeman; Mrs George Filer; Mrs John Dudley; and Mrs John Ware of Frostburg; and Miss Hazel Bennett of Baltimore. A brother, Benjamin Nicol lives at St Junction PA. Burial in Allegany Cemetery. BICKFORD 14 Nov 1916 Moses Bickford, a former resident, died at Excelsior MN. He had served in the Union Army in the Civil War with the MD Brigade as a 2nd Lt. His wife was the former Miss Fannie Fazenbaker of Cumberland and a sister of J W Rawlings; AL Rawlings; and ME Rawlings still of Cumberland. A sister, Mrs Jane Fazenbaker survives. BROOKS 17 Nov 1916 George H Brooks, aged 81 years, a farmer of Hancock, died Tuesday (14 Nov). He was a brother of the late John Brooks. Surviving is a niece, Mrs Neil Oliver of Columbia Street. BROTEMARKLE 01 Nov 1916 Milton Brotemarkle, aged 60 years, a retired farmer, died today at his home 60 N Lee street following a heart seizure suffered on Sunday. He was born and raised on the Valley Road four miles from Cumberland just above the state line in Bedford Co., PA. He resided with his daughter, a graduate nurse, Miss Ada Brotemarkle. Also surviving are a son, George Brotemarkle; and another daughter, Mrs C Walter Frantz; and brothers, David Brotemarkle of near Cumberland; and, Dr Clinton Brotemarkle of near Salisbury MD; and two grand children. Services and burial at the Centenary ME Church of Cumberland Valley. BROWN 29 Nov 1916 Walter Elias Brown, aged 12 years, son of H C Brown of Springfield WV died at the home of an aunt in Ridgeley WV after several weeks at Western Maryland Hospital. Burial is at Springfield. BURNS 18 Nov 1916 John Burns, aged 85 years, died today at the Sylvan Retreat after a six month stay. A former resident of Midland, he is survived by a son Jay Burns. Burial and services at St Michael’s Catholic Church of Frostburg. BURTON 15 Nov 1916 Miss Virginia Burton, a daughter of William M Burton and former resident, now of Pittsburgh, died yesterday. She was the niece of Mrs R H Williams and of Mrs J S Shaw. CESSNA 13 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Jonathan Cessna, aged 53 years, formerly of Frostburg, died Saturday (11 Nov) at Davis Hospital of typhoid. He resides at Charleston and worked as a railroad brakeman. Survived by his wife, a daughter of the late John Atkinson of Frostburg, and three daughters; Mrs Noora Parker and Misses Grace Cessna and Hilda Cessna. Burial at Charleston WV. CHANEY 10 Nov 1916 Golden R Chaney, a seven month old daughter of Mr & Mrs James D Chaney of Spring Gap; died yesterday after a brief illness. Burial in Davis Cemetery. CHESHIRE 21 Nov 1916 Mrs Perry Cheshire, aged 92 years, formerly of Romney WV, is ill at the home of a daughter, Mrs W D Hardy of 331 Pennsylvania Avenue. The former Miss Eliza Orndoff was married in 1846 and Mr Cheshire died in 1879. There are ten children of the Cheshire family with Benjamin Cheshire, George Cheshire, Mrs W D Hardy, and Joseph Cheshire still alive. CLARK 22 Nov 1916 Lonaconing- William Clark, aged 90 years, a Garrett County pioneer, died yesterday of Bright’s disease. Surviving are his wife, a son, John Clark; and daughters, Mrs John Green, and Mrs Thomas Beeman. Burial is in the home burying grounds. COLEMAN 29 Nov 1916 Mrs Sarah Dorcas Coleman, aged 64 years, a widow of Henry A Coleman, died yesterday at her home, 22 Wallace Street of inflammatory rheumatism. Born in Harpers Ferry WV, her maiden name was Bucy, and she married in 1852. Surviving children are; Mrs Mary J Paxton of Jester OK; Mrs C H Griffey of Ellerslie, Misses Low Coleman; Daisy Coleman; and Lynn Coleman; and also, William H Coleman and George Coleman of Cumberland. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. CONLON 06 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Mary Conlon, aged 53 years, widow of Frank Conlon who died three years ago, died at Sylvan Retreat on Saturday (4 Nov) following three years of illness. She was a daughter of Mr & Mrs Donohue of Carlos. Survived by son, Michael Condon of Mt Pleasant Street; a daughter, Mrs Oscar Blake of McCullough Street; and two brothers and two sisters; Patrick Donohue; and Peter Donohue of Boswell PA; and Mrs William Burns; and Mrs Timothy Cullen of Pittsburgh. Burial services at St Michaels Catholic Church and Cemetery. COOK 28 Nov 1916 Mrs Sophia Cook, aged 92 years, died Sunday (26 Nov) at her home in Hyndman PA. A surviving grand son, J J Tipton is a Superintendent of Allegany County public schools. Burial is at Hyndman PA. CRABTREE 16 Nov 1916 Mrs Fannie G Crabtree, aged 65 years, died yesterday at her home in Oldtown after a long illness. She is survived by three sons and one daughter. Burial is in Oldtown. CRAWFORD 11 Nov 1916 James Crawford, 12 year old son of Mr & Mrs Grover C Crawford of 30 Maryland Avenue, died yesterday at Allegany Hospital from a gun shot wound accidently inflicted at his home while shooting rats with an uncle, Henry McNabb the father is with the Central Fire Department and the uncle is with the West Side Fire Department. Police investigated and ruled the death accidental. Services are at St Patrick’s Catholic Church. CROSS 28 Nov 1916 Mt Savage- Mrs Matilda Cross got a telegram from Pittsburgh advising her of the death of her son, James Cross aged 50 years who underwent an operation related to stomach trouble. He is also survived by his wife and four children, Irene Cross, Lillian Cross, John Cross, and William Cross; and four brothers, William Cross of Richmond VA; Luther Cross of Pittsburgh; George Cross of Alliance OH; and John Cross of Mt Savage. And one sister, Mrs John Davidson of Mt Savage. Burial is at Pittsburgh. CROWELL 18 Nov 1916 William F Crowell, aged 68 years, a farm machine salesman. Died yesterday at his home on E. Pitt Street, Bedford PA. His wife, the former Miss Hoover of Morrison’s Cove and two sons and three daughters survive. CROWLEY 28 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Michael Crowley, aged 73 years, of Eckhart, died today in the home of a brother, James Crowley of 112 Bowery Street. A bachelor, he is also survived by another brother, Thomas Crowley. Burial in St Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. CUMBERLAND SOLDIERS 06 Nov 1916 Company G soldiers return to Cumberland after a four month deployment on the Mexican Border to support the Pancho Villa Excursion. DANTZIG 18 Nov 1916 Herman Dantzig, aged 1 year, a son of Mr & Mrs James H Dantzig of 100 N Centre Street, died today and burial is tomorrow at Hebrew Cemetery. DARR 02 Nov 1916 Mrs Ella Gertrude Darr, aged 28 years, wife of Charles E Darr, died yesterday at her home in Martinsburg WV of typhoid fever. Surviving are her father, her husband, and these brothers and sisters; Charles Van Meter of Baltimore; Mrs F F Gibbs; Mrs Howard Ferguson of Martinsburg; Mrs Joseph B Grubb of N Center Street; and Mrs Henry Van Meter of Cumberland. DEAN 11 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Joseph Dean, aged 48 years, died yesterday at Borden Mines. She was a daughter of Mr & Mrs Abraham Crowe and a native of Barton MD. She is survived by her husband, four sons and four daughters; William Dean of Somerset PA; Frank Dean; Arthur Dean; and Robert Dean; and, Nellie Dean; Martha Dean all of home; Mrs Ada Wilson and Mrs Nannie Wilson of Cumberland. DEFFINBAUGH 17 Nov 1916 Henry Francis Deffinbaugh, aged 52 years, died today at his home in Corrigansville after a paralysis of five days. His mother, Mrs Elizabeth Deffinbaugh; his wife; a brother, Elmer Deffinbaugh; and a sister, Mrs Ida Kline survive. Burial is in Greenmount Cemetery. DENSMORE 22 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Mary Densmore, aged 63 years, widow of Alexander Densmore, died today at the home of a daughter, Mrs William Winters of Carlos. She was a Miss Mary Jones prior to marriage and has been ill for ten years due to paralysis. Surviving children are; Alexander Densmore; John Densmore; Mrs William Filer; and Mrs William Winters. ENTLER 24 Nov 1916 Mrs Elsie Entler, aged 39 years, wife of George Entler of Bowery Street, died today at Miner’s Hospital following a two year illness and a recent operation. She was a daughter of Mr & Mrs William A Robinson of Garrett Co. Surviving are her husband, three sons, Stanley Entler, Marshall Entler, and Fred Entler; and four daughters, Mary Entler, Ethel Entler, Verda Entler, and Ruth Entler- all at home. FOLEY 09 Nov 1916 John J Foley, the oldest son of Mr & Mrs William Foley of First Street, Cumberland and Miss Mary M Creegan, the youngest daughter of Mr & Mrs Patrick Creegan were married on Wednesday (8 Nov) at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Midland, by Rev P J Kenny of St Peter’s Church in Baltimore, an uncle of the bride. They will reside in Washington DC. GRAYSON 09 Nov 1916 Keyser- Vernon M Grayson, aged 63 years, died on Wednesday (8 Nov) at Hoffman Hospital in Keyser of peritonitis following an appendix operation and an illness of one yea. His wife and eight sons and two daughters survive. Burial in Queen’s Point Cemetery. HALL 17 Nov 1916 Keyser- Mrs L C Hall, widow of Dr J W Hall, died yesterday at her home on N Main Street. She was the wife of John W Harslup who married her on Sept 24, 1852, and moved to Grafton in 1864. She was the mother of eleven children, nine of which still living with six locally and a son, Mildred Harslup of Birmingham; Miss Nell Harslup of Norfolk; and Mrs Fell Sleet, the wife of Dr. John Sleet of Norfolk. HIXENBAUGH 23 Nov 1916 Mrs Dora Hixenbaugh, aged 63 years, died at the home of a son who lives in the old “Davy Davis” home below the Mayer Brick and Tile Plant. Burial is in the Morrison’s Graveyard near Barton. HODEL 06 Nov 1916 Eli F Hodel, aged 50 years, died yesterday at the home of his sister at 15 Williams Street of a complication of diseases. HOWSARE 15 Nov 1916 Mrs Mary Howsare, aged 78 years, died Monday (13 Nov) at her home, 332 Pennsylvania Avenue. The funeral is in Chaneysville. HUFF 29 Nov 1916 Mrs Annie Huff, aged 73 years, wife of Andrew Huff, died today at Allegany Hospital after a brief illness. The body is a her sister’s home, Mrs L Morris of Hay Street. HUNEL 24 Nov 1916 Mrs W S Hunel, aged 44 years, of Appolo PA, died today of cancer at her boarding house, 69 N Mechanic Street. Her husband and three children survive; George Hunel, Roy Hunel, and Ernest Hunel. Mr Hunel is employed by George A Mays as a jockey. Burial is at Rose Hill Cemetery. HUTH 08 Nov 1916 Piedmont- Louis Huth, aged 50 years, a son of Charles Huth, died today following a six month residence as an invalid at the State Sanitarium at Terra Alta WV from tuberculosis. He was son of Justice C F Huth of Piedmont and was employed at WV Pulp and Paper Co. His father survives with two brothers and three sisters; Ernest S Huth of Cumberland; Charles Huth of Piedmont; and Mrs J G Schramm; Mrs O M Rizer; and Mrs Frank Smith of Piedmont. Burial is in Piedmont. JEFFRIES 15 Nov 1916 Alopheous M Jeffries, telegrapher of the B & O RR at Altamont, died there at age 52 years. JOHNSON 11 Nov 1916 Miss Carrie Johnson, aged 32 years of Berkeley Springs WV died yesterday at Western Maryland Hospital. The body is at Wolford’s Mortuary and will be sent to Paw Paw for services and burial. JONES 16 Nov 1916 Frostburg- William Jones, aged 28 years, died today at the home of his father, William Jones Sr at Vale Summit of a broken back suffered by a fall of rock in the Merten’s & Sons Montell Mines on Jan 8. He had been hospitalized until two months ago when he was brought home. Surviving are his wife and his father, and two small children; and also, his two sisters, Mrs Martin Bean of Vale Summit and Mrs Thomas Hughes of OH. KEALHOFER 16 Nov 1916 William Kealhofer of Hagerstown, died and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. MICKSELL 23 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Alice Micksell, aged 48 years, wife of John Micksell, died yesterday at her home, 255 Welsh Hill. She was stricken with paralysis four years ago. A native of Fulton Co., PA, the family moved to Frostburg only 17 years ago. Surviving are her husband, three sons, and four daughters; William Micksell and Ernest Micksell at home; Benjamin Micksell of Berkeley Springs WV; Grace Micksell, Minnie Micksell, Carrie Micksell, and Clara Micksell at home. Also, her mother, Mrs Margaret Powell; a sister, Mrs Charles Bishop; and four brothers, Joseph Powell, Jacob Powell, Luther Powell, and John Powell all of Fulton County. Burial is in Allegany Cemetery. MILLER 28 Nov 1916 Mrs Harry Miller, aged 24 years, shot herself with a shotgun in the chest today. She was a daughter of Mr & Mrs Frank Shaw of Barton, now of Jennings Run. She had been melancholy over a fire that had damaged her home at Avilton. Her husband and three children survive. RALEY 21 Nov 1916 Albert Raley, aged 64 years, a Pennsylvania RR conductor of Ellerslie, died yesterday at Claysburg PA while working. His son, Daniel Raley died Oct 19 of hiccoughs and one week later, his mother, Mrs Daniel Raley died. He is survived by his second wife and these children; Ross Raley of Bloomington; John Raley of Richmond; Harvey Raley of Pittsburgh; Mrs William Hunt of Versailles PA; Mrs John Brewer of Braddock PA; Mrs James Porter of Altoona PA; Mrs Raymond Faulkner of McKee’s Rocks PA; Harry Raley of Washington DC; and Wilbert Raley and Charles Raley at home. Burial services are at Hyndman PA. RALEY 13 Nov 1916 Frostburg- Mrs Clarence Raley, aged 42 years, died Saturday (11 Nov) at Finzel of neuralgia of the heart. Her husband and several children survive. REID 13 Nov 1916 William H Reid, aged 69 years, died Saturday (11 Nov). He had enlisted in the Union Army at age 15 and served the 1st MD Cav in the Valley Campaign. He was pensioned from the B & O RR. He had been ill for several months of heart trouble dying at the home of a niece, Mrs Ida Oliver of 69 S Mechanic Street. He is survived by a brother, James Reid a Cumberland mailman and two sisters; Mrs Catherine Anderson of Salinas KS and Mrs Margaret Couters of Cumberland. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. RHODEN 01 Nov 1916 Mrs Ellenar Rhoden, aged 92 years, the widow of Philip Rhoden, died today at her home, 4 Ann Street after an illness of several weeks. She was a native of Galway, Ireland and came to this country when ten years of age. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs F A Tole, Miss Teresa Rhoden, and Mrs N C Pegman; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs Ida Rhoden. Services and burial at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church and Cemetery. RITCHIE 01 Nov 1916 Westernport- Daniel Ritchie, aged 70 years, a bachelor, was struck and killed by a mail car of the C&P RR yesterday. He lived alone in the Ritchie Building which he built and owned. William Ritchie of Cumberland is a nephew. ROBINETTE 17 Nov 1916 George Wesley Robinette, aged 85 years, died today at Flintstone of a long illness. ROBINSON 06 Nov 1916 William H Robinson, 80 years of age, a colored man, died yesterday at the County Home after a four month residency. Burial in Allegany County Cemetery. RODGERS 03 Nov 1016 Frostburg- Patrick Rodgers, aged 58 years of age, died Wednesday (01 Nov) of paralysis. His wife survives and services and burial are at St Gabriel’s in Barton. SHEETZ 17 Nov 1916 Keyser- Robert Johnson Sheetz died at Alberta Canada from an ailment of heart trouble of a 2 years illness. Miss Sue Sheetz of Keyser is a sister. SHOBE 15 Nov 1916 Keyser- Mrs Sallie Shobe, wife of James Shobe of near Keyser, died on Saturday (11 Nov). Her husband and two sons survive. SHULTZ 22 Nov 1916 William Shultz, aged 51 years, died yesterday at his home, 25 Pine Alley of tuberculosis, suffered for the past 2 years. Surviving are his wife and two children, William Shultz and Helen Shultz, at home. Also, four sisters and one brother; Mrs Minnie Klingenhoffer of Baltimore; Mrs Mary Everett; Mrs Sophia Shaffer, and Mrs Catherine Roeder of Cumberland; and Henry Shultz of Sutersville PA. Burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery. SOMERVILLE 04 Nov 1916 Lonaconing- Mrs Katie P Somerville, aged 62 years, the widow of Robert L Somerville, died yesterday of a nervous disorder. She was born in Cumberland and raised in Frostburg as Katie Dilley; Her husband, Col. Somerville was superintendent of George’s Creek Coal & Iron and he was also on the staff of two governors of WV, Atkinson and Dawson. Surviving children are; Mrs Frederick A Husted; and Arch A Somerville of Lonaconing; John F Somerville of Thomas WV; Mrs William Skilling; and Robert B Somerville of Baltimore MD; and Mrs E P Smith of Cumberland. One brother, George Connor of Nashville TH; and three sisters, Mrs Watson Carr of Washington DC; Mrs Effie Wingert of Knoxville TN; and Mrs A L Mason of Friendsville. Burial in Allegany Cemetery. SYESTER 24 Nov 1916 Mrs Catherine Syester, aged 89 years, widow of Judge K Syester, died on Wednesday (22 Nov) at the home of a daughter, Mrs Fred Hovey of Philadelphia. She was a long time resident of Hagerstown. She was formerly Miss Catherine Harry, daughter of the late William L Harry. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs Joseph W Coxe of Roanoke VA; and Mrss Fred Hovey of Philadelphia; and a son, Andrew Syester of Washington DC. Burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery. TRAIL 13 Nov 1916 John Everett Trail, an infant son 18 days old, of Mr & Mrs John Trail, 102 Ella Avenue, died yesterday following a brief illness. TURNER 13 Nov 1916 Bloomington- Verney Turner, aged 21 years, was killed in a fall of 25 feet from the Western Maryland bridge over the Potomac River at Luke which broke his neck on Saturday night (11 Nov). He was assisting an intoxicated man home when he fell. He is a son of William Turner and resided at home. He was a fireman of the Western Maryland RR. TWIGG 17 Nov 1916 John Twigg, aged 26 years, of 1024 Ella Avenue, a boilermaker of the B & O RR, attempted suicide with a 32 calibre hand gun and has suffered a bullet wound over the heart. He is the son of W H Twigg of Lafayette Street. His wife, the former Miss Bertha Roach of Little Cacapon WV and a child await his return from the hospital. WALKER 24 Nov 1916 Frank E Walker, aged 35 years, of Meyersdale PA, died today at Allegany Hospital from a wound received while hunting near Garrett PA. He is survived by his wife and five children; Gertrude Walker, Hiram Walker, Clarence Walker, Paul Walker, and Norman Walker. Services are at Meyersdale PA. WALSH 21 Nov 1916 Mrs Julie V Walsh, aged 80 years, of Harpers Ferry WV, widow of Murtha Walsh, died Saturday (18 Nov). She was a Montague family member of Virginia. Her husband was a brother of William Walsh, an ex-congressman of Cumberland. Surviving are five daughters, Mary Walsh; Louise Walsh; Julia Walsh; Mrs H L Kirby of Harpers Ferry; Sr. Angelica of Mercy Hospital in Baltimore; and two sons, William Walsh and John Walsh. Also, a sister, Sr, Genevieve Montague of Frederick MD; a brother, Lawrence Montague of Martinsburg; a nephew, William E Walsh of Cumberland and a niece, Mrs P J Seaver of Cumberland; plus a number of other relatives in Cumberland. WILLISON 27 Nov 1916 John B Willison, aged 66, merchant of Flintstone, died today of a cold and a year of illness. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Emily Wilson, a daughter of the late Isaac Wilson, and these children; Maurice C Willison of Youngstown OH; Hervely G Willison of Cumberland; Ellis Willison of Pittsburgh; Mrs Lola Young, wife of Everett G Young of Pittsburgh; Mrs Oleta Sutcliffe, wife of Dr C B Sutcliffe of Johnstown PA; and Miss Olive Willison at home.
