BROTEMARKLE 05 Oct 1918 Michael Brotemarkle, aged 73 years, died yesterday at his home on Williams Road of Spanish Influenza. Born on the Bedford road a son of Michael Brotemarkle, a pioneer of the county. A successful farmer, he married Louise Simmons of Cumberland Valley 47 years ago. Surviving are his wife and 14 children; William-Baltimore; Ellsworth, S Tilden, Clarence W, Rolland, Harry M Brotemarkle and Mrs Edith McKenzie and Mrs Bertha Evans-all of Cumberland; Mrs Belle Vanmeter Cresaptown; Oits M-Omaha NE; Alvey E-Chicago IL; Mrs Mary Logsdon-Patterson’s Creek WV; and Nora and Earl-at home. FISHER 11 Feb 1918 Daniel E Fisher, B&O engineer, died yesterday. Born on the Baltimore Pike, a son of John Daniel Fisher and wife Margaret, who was Mary Margaret Cresap-descendant of Col. Cresap. HIGGINS 22 Oct 1918 Joseph L Higgins, aged 51, died Sunday afternoon (20 Oct) at home on Green Ridge of pneumonia. A supervisor of C & 0 Canal Co between Cumberland and Dam # 6 and several years ago he ran for county commissioner. He is survived by his wife and 4 sons and 2 daughters; Paul, Bernard, Raymond, Gertrude, and Helen at home; also 4 sisters; Mrs James H Van-Green Ridge; Mrs CT Callen-Little Orleans; Mrs FN Kessler and Mrs PJ Doyle-this city. His wife was a Miss Dunnigan of Pearre MD. Mr Higgins was born on a farm near his present home and lived here all of his life. Services and burial St Patricks Catholic Church - Little Orleans. KREITZBURG 23 Jul 1918 Personals - Master Aden Kreitzburg of McKeesport PA, who had been visiting his grand-mother, Mrs Thomas Morris, Eckhart and his uncle and aunt, Mr & Mrs Michael L Shea, 15 Broadway, has returned home, accompanied by his cousin, Miss Genevieve Louth, who will spend some time in McKeesport. also, Mr & Mrs Michael L Shea, 15 Broadway, received word of their son William D Shea has arrived in France with the 344 Field Artillery. KREITZBURG 30 Jul 1918 The following from ZihIman and from Mt Savage spent Sunday on the banks of Patterson's Creek near Frankfort WV: Mrs Julia Weslow; Mrs Mary Pollock; Misses Vera Haswell, Eva Frankenberry, Catherine Weslow, Martha Weslow, and Edward Frankenberry; Mayford Weslow; William Dickel; Guy Martin; Henry Weslow; Elmer Weslow; John Dickel; Francis Cassidy; and Ian Cassidy. Most of the time was spent swimming. KREITZBURG 02 Oct 1918 An infant child of Mr & Mrs Albert Dickel, Zihlman, died Friday morning of influenza. McELFISH 26 Jan 1918 The Six Mile House, Baltimore Pike, formerly the property of Philip H McElfish, was purchased by Carl E Hetzel of this city for $4200 this morning at a mortgagee's sale. The building at one time was used as a hotel. The property includes 173 acres of land. MILLER 15 Feb 1918 Henry Miller died recently near Helixville, Bedford County from pneumonia at age 62 years. He was married to Miss Carrie Lape for 35 years who survived with the following children: Nettie Ferguson -Napier; Charles Miller -Cumberland; Mrs James Kinsey -New Florence; Mrs Stella Shaffer -Schellsburg; Angie Miller, Harry Miller, Norman Miller, Marie Miller and Bruce Miller -all at home, 16 gr-ch. MILLER 18 May 1918 Marriage Licence - Roy C Miller and Grace E James - Cumberland MD MILLER 04 Nov 1918 Mrs Estella A Miller, aged 27, wife of John Miller, merchant and blacksmith on the Baltimore Turnpike, near the Six Mile House, died early Sunday evening (3 Nov) of pneumonia. She is survived by her husband and two children. Roy Miller, her brother-in-law is at Camp Meade. Funeral and interment at the Pleasant Grove church and cemetery. MORSE 08 Jul 1918 Mrs Mary E Morse, aged 74, died on 6 Jul at Piney Grove of paralysis. Married twice, she had 8 children of her first marriage. Survived by Mrs Amanda Clites-Sheridan PA; Mrs Emma Ott, Miss Fannie Douglas, EM Douglas, Edward M Douglas, CW Douglas-all of Pittsburgh. She was a sister of Mrs Crawford of Piney Grove and will be buried at Union Grove Cemetery. NELSON 20 Sep 1918 Mrs Andrew M Nelson, funeral on Wednesday with burial in Eckhart Cemetery. Gladys C Nelson, aged 22 years old, died Monday (16 Sep). She is survived by her father, LB Connor; sisters, Mrs Joseph Miller, Mrs Russell Weisenborn, and Miss Ruth Connor; brothers, Millard, Charles, Lewis, Griffith, and Crawford Connor. O'NEAL 14 Feb 1918 William C O'Neal, aged 75 years, died today at home on Flintstone Creek. OFTEN 20 Nov 1918 Marriage Licences- Paul Rollo Weller, 24, machinist of Cumberland MD and Annie Martha Often, 24 of Eckhart MD. OFTEN 21 Nov 1918 A wedding of much interest took place Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock when Miss Martha Often of Eckhart, became the bride of Paul R Weller, of Cumberland. The ceremony was performed at the parsonage of Zion Evangelical Church by Rev Theo Beckmeyer. The bride is the only daughter of Mr & Mrs Patrick Often. She was attired becomingly in a gown of white satin with veil and carried a bouquet of brides roses. The groom is the only son of Mrs Rhoda Weller and has been employed by the Western Maryland Railway as a machinist for the past five years. They were attended by Mr & Mrs George Often. The bridesmaid wore toupe gray satin. A wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride after which the couple left immediately for a two week visit to Chicago. On return they will reside in Cumberland. ROBINSON 13 Dec 1918 Mrs Minnie May Robinson died at her home on the Charles W Creek farm near the Washington County line on Saturday (7 Dec). Burial was in the Piney Plains Cemetery. SHERTZER 21 Mar 1918 Mr & Mrs Leonard M Shertzer, 4014 Carter St, Norwood, Cincinnati OH, announce the birth of a 7 1/2 lb girl, born on her fathers birthday. Grandparents are Mr & Mrs JM Shertzer, 347 N Mechanic St, Cumberland. SHERTZER 06 May 1918 Leonard Shertzer, aged 63 years, died last midnight at the Western Maryland Hospital following an operation. The body was removed to the Butler Mortuary. It will be taken to his home in Accident MD tomorrow. SMITH 08 Apr 1918 Albert Smith, a native of Pennsylvania, died 06 Apr 1918 in Martinsburg WV, aged 77 years. He was a Union veteran of the Civil War and was engaged in farming near Bedford for many years. He retired and 5 years ago bought the Compton place in Martinsburg where he has since resided. His wife died 3 years ago. He is survived by one son, Charles Smith, residing in his home. Burial in Bedford. TWIGG 05 Mar 1918 M. Sprigg Twigg, aged 75 years, a Civil War Veteran, died yesterday at his home on Town Creek. He was in the Union Army and suffered a leg injury while in battle. His 1 st wife was a sister to Benjamin F Middleton of Twiggtown. He is survived by his widow and the following children: Mrs Adolphus Hartsock-Cumberland; Mrs Cora Little-Rush MD; Mrs Myrtle Snyder-Oldtown; Mrs Elsie Collier-Charlestown WV; Miss Adeline Twigg-Oklahoma City OK; Harry Twigg-Bedford County PA; Herman Twigg-Flintstone; Ord Twigg, Alvin Twigg, Stanley Twigg, Elizabeth twigg, and Lucille Twigg-all at home. TWIGG 25 Nov 1918 Peter Twigg, age 62, died Saturday (23 Nov) at his home, 210 W Second St of pneumonia. He was stricken by influenza when the epidemic was at its heights. His wife and several children survive. He was a draysman. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. VALLEY ROAD 26 Jul 1918 "Glenora" farm on Little Valley Road including parcels of land known as "Deeply Explored", "Federal Forest", and "Stubblefield" transferred from George Deneen and wife to Samuel Semmes on 19 Sep 1843.. and tract of land "Hoffman's Delight" from Benjamin Brown to Samuel M Semmes on 23 May 1846. Same property transferred from James Finan and wife to Christopher Roberts on 25 Jun 1896. Same property to James A Milholland on 16 Sep 1901 to W Milnor Roberts et al this date. WEIMER 15 Feb 1918 Solomon Weimer, farmer, aged 68 years, died at home near Chapmans Run, Bedford Co, on Monday 11 Feb after a lingering illness. The funeral at Pleasant Union Church. The widow is Elizabeth Fletcher, dau of Daniel & Lydia Fletcher; and a large number of children; a brother Bernard Weimer -near Cumberland; a sister, Mrs David Comer at Monroe. WESLOW 06 Sep 1918 Mrs William Weslow, aged 87 years, died at the home of a dau, Mrs Henry Harris of Eckhart MD yesterday. A native of Germany, she was married twice, her first husband was Christopher Niner. She is survived by 5 sons and 3 daughters; Joseph Niner-Cumberland; Thomas, Charles, and Louis Niner-Eckhart MD; Frank Niner-Frostburg; Mrs Henry Harris-Eckhart; Mrs John Holtsnyder-Oakland; Mrs Martin Savilinski-Cumberland. Funeral and burial at St Michaels. WILSON 22 Apr 1918 Moses R Wilson, aged 74 years, died yesterday at home on the Baltimore Pike, 4 miles east of Cumberland. Born near Flintstone, a son of Jesse Wilson, former school commissioner of Allegany County. He was a successful farmer. He is survived by 2 sons; Perry Wilson resides in the family home; Jesse Wilson lives in Akron OH; one dau, Mrs Ella Barton - Baltimore Ave; a sister, Mrs Marie Neff -Bedford Road; 4 brothers, Thornton Wilson-Murleys Branch Rd; Austin A Wilson- Cumberland, former states attorney for Allegany Co; Harvey Wilson -Cumberland; George L Wilson -McKeesport PA. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. Burial in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery.
