Villa declared he had left the state of Pennsylvania a year ago because of threats and intimidation following a strike. He is married and has a family. He worked as a miner but in recent months was employed in industry in Cumberland. The indictment charged Villa with making false claims for money alleged to have been lost after it was mailed in registered letters. Villa made purchases from a Chicago mail order house on payments. The postal inspectors declared he had made two false claims for remittances, one in Oct 1924 for $100 and another Nov 14 for $45. The trick was to put the money in the envelope before the postmaster. Before mailing it, one end of the envelope was cut, the money removed, and the envelope resealed.
