Born May 1, 1924, at Messick Road, Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles Anthony Messick and Pleasant Mae (Hardman) Messick. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Mae Chambers, and two brothers-in-law, Aubrey Chambers and Milton Oster. Howard was taught to farm at an early age by his grandfather, Edward Hardman, and his goal in life was to farm and raise beef cattle. Previous employers were Collins Dairy Farm, located on Christie Road and Rawlings MD; Lester Raines Farm, Cumberland; Smiths Dingle Esso Service Station, Cumberland; Jim Kerr’s Gas Station, LaVale; S.T.Brotemarkle Co., Cumberland; and Baughman Contracting Co, LaVale. He was a partner of Oster and Messick Excavating, and owner of Messick Excavating. Howard was baptized in his parents home on Dec 27, 1924 by the Rev. D.R.Clecker. He rededicated his life to his Lord in April 1996, through witnessing by his brother-in-law, Harry Valdivia. He enjoyed sports, especially fishing, hunting, and baseball. She was also preceded in death by her late husbands Marshall "Mutt" Hardman and Ralph Reynolds; and brothers, Robert Miller and Walter T. Miller . Mrs. Reynolds was a retired employee of the Montgomery Ward Department Store. She was a member of Pleasant grove United Methodist Church, the Homemakers of Pleasant Grove, the American Legion, and the church choir. Surviving are two daughters; Marian Chambers and husband Rev. Richard of Greencastle PA; and Karen Durrett and husband Bruce of Cape Coral, FL a brother Fred Miller of Lewisburg PA; a sister Pearl Fisher of Baltimore Pike; seven grandchildren, Connie Anderson, Cindy House, Cathy Staggs, Mark Chambers, Paul Chambers, Tyra Durrett Winters, and Kara Durrett Dolan; 14 gr-grand-children 4 gr-gr-grand-children, and one gr-gr-gr-grand-child. SHERTZER xx xxx xxxx John Shertzer, aged 50, of Vale Summitt, was fatally injured when caught by a fall of rock in the Mertens Mine at Montell at 9 o'clock today. He was crushed about the loins and stomach and was rushed to Miners Hospital where he died about 1:35 PM. Patrick Higgins removed Mr Shertzer from under the rocks. The injured man's son Edward Schertzer, was on the heading and escaped. Mr Shertzer has a wife and 8 children. He was a member of UCT. He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II with the Corps of Engineers where he was awarded the Purple Heart.
