HARDMAN 11 Jul 1999 CUMBERLAND The Rev. Betty Jane Hardman, 71, of 14600 Hardman Road, S.E., Cumberland, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 10, 1999, at Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. Born in Cumberland, March 7, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Samuel A. Rankin and the late Florence L. (Wagner) Rankin. The Rev. Hardman was the co-pastor of Soul's Harbor Church. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth E. Hardman Sr.; two sons, Kenneth Eugene Hardman Jr. and wife, Linda, Cumberland, David W. Hardman Sr. and wife, Vicki, Cumberland; one daughter, Bonnie K. Collins and husband, John, Cumberland; one brother, Jacob Rankin, Cumberland; one sister, Lizamae Lewis, Cumberland; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Born Oct. 28, 1935, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Aldon Burnard Buckley and Elizabeth Alice (Deberry) Buckley of Cumberland. She also was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Marie Hardman. Mrs. Hardman was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Edward C. Hardman; one son, Edward J. Hardman and wife Kim, Ridgeley, W.Va.; one daughter, A. JOHNSON 03 Jun 1994 CUMBERLAND MD.- Walter Lewis "Ronnie" Johnson , 80, of 11902 McMullan Highway,(Bowling Green) Cumberland, died Friday, June 3, 1994, at the Allegany County Nursing Home where he had been a resident for five and one-half years. Born on March 16, 1914, in Artemas, Pa., he was the son of the late Warren M. Johnson and Mary Lee (Huff) Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired employee of the Potomac Edison Company with 42 and one-half years of service and was a member of the Centre Street United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 52 and one-half years, Dorothy Lee (Often) Johnson; one son, Robert Johnson and wife Phyllis, Newark Ohio; one daughter, Carolee Stanton and husband, Thomas, (Bel Air) Cumberland; one brother, Warren Johnson, York Pa.: one sister, Bertha Clingerman, Artemas; three grandchildren and one step grandson. McKENZIE 23 Oct 1998 BUFFALO MILLS, Pa. - Ervin William McKenzie, 69, of 2779 Madley Hollow Road, Buffalo Mills, died Oct. 22, 1998, at his residence. Born at Montell, Md., on Aug. 22, 1929, he was a son of the late Leonard Clarence McKenzie and Edna Elizabeth (Smith) McKenzie. Also preceding him in death were three brothers and three sisters. He was a member of Lonaconing Methodist Church, Lonaconing, Md. He was a retired tractor trailer driver after 25 years. Mr. McKenzie was a U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Twila J. (Hoover) McKenzie, Buffalo Mills; one son, Mike McKenzie, Glen Burnie, Md.; one daughter, Patricia Ann Valentine, Sunnyside, Md.; sisters Alice Albright and husband, Carl, Frostburg, Md., Anna Mae Brode, Somerset, Mary McKenzie, Cresaptown, Md., Mildred Middleton, Clinton Township, Mich.; one brother, Eugene McKenzie and wife, Rose, Millersville, Md.; four grandchildren; and 34 nieces and nephews. MESSICK 29 May 1997 Flintstone, MD-Howard V. "Red" Messick, 73, of Flintstone, died of pulmonary disease on Tuesday, May 27, 1997, in Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice. Born May 1, 1924, at Messick Road, Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles Anthony Messick and Pleasant Mae (Hardman) Messick. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Mae Chambers, and two brothers-in-law, Aubrey Chambers and Milton Oster. Howard was taught to farm at an early age by his grandfather, Edward Hardman, and his goal in life was to farm and raise beef cattle. Previous employers were Collins Dairy Farm, located on Christie Road and Rawlings MD; Lester Raines Farm, Cumberland; Smiths Dingle Esso Service Station, Cumberland; Jim Kerr’s Gas Station, LaVale; S.T.Brotemarkle Co., Cumberland; and Baughman Contracting Co, LaVale. He was a partner of Oster and Messick Excavating, and owner of Messick Excavating. Howard was baptized in his parents home on Dec 27, 1924 by the Rev. D.R.Clecker. He rededicated his life to his Lord in April 1996, through witnessing by his brother-in-law, Harry Valdivia. Surviving are his wife, Anna Marie (Raley) Messick, Flintstone; children, Ernie Messick and his wife Colleen (Gilmore), Everett. MILLER 21 Apr 1996 Augusta GA- Herbert "Herb" Lee Miller, 67, of Augusta, GA, died Tuesday, April 16, 1996, at his home. Born Jan 29, 1929, in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Walter T. Miller and Margaret E. (Hardman) Miller, formerly of Baltimore Pike, Cumberland, MD. Mr. Miller attended Flintstone School and Fort Hill High School. He was a veteran of the Merchant Marines and served in the Korean War. He was employed by Supreme Block Co. in Hagerstown and Frederick Md., and retired from Rinker Cement Corp. , Augusta. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus . He enjoyed sports, especially fishing, hunting, and baseball. Surviving are his wife, Chen Su (Chian) Miller, children from a previous marriage to Anna Louise (Burkett) Miller, Rockledge, FL; seven sons, Patrick Miller and wife Rossella, USAF, Italy, Kenneth Miller and wife Barbara, Lakeland FL, Michael Miller and wife Christy, Jacksonville, FL, Jeffrey Miller and wife Shari, Cocoa, FL, Robert Miller and wife Nancy, Macon, GA, Timothy Miller and wife Diane, Palm Bay, FL, and Philip Miller and wife Julie, Cocoa, FL; one daughter, Rose Ann (Miller) Roth and husband Greg, Rockledge, FL; tow brothers, Lamar Miller, Bunnell FL, and Merrill Miller, Palm Coast, FL; five sisters, Wilda Miller, Hagerstown, Arlene Higgins, Hagerstown, Alberta Zembower, Bedford Valley, PA, Audrey Wills, Cumberland, MD, and Patricia Often, Catonsville, MD; 16 grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. OFTEN 09 Apr 1990 CUMBERLAND- Mrs. Margaret Louise Often 89, of 11902 McMullan Highway, died Saturday, April 7, 1990, in the Alleghany County Nursing Home. Born, Dec. 9, 1900, in Woodland, she was the daughter of the late Christian and Elizabeth(Hetrick) Dick. She was a member of the Center Street United Methodist Church and is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Often was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy 'Roy' Often, in 1967. Also preceding her in death was one grandson, Bradley Often. Surviving are one son, James L. Often, LaVale; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Johnson at home; three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and one step great grandchild. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Silcox-Merritt Funeral Home where services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Adam W. Grim. Born in Lonaconing she was a dau of the late Hugh McGinn and Anna Getson; She was preceded in death by her husband John C. "Benchie" Often in 1972, one dau and one son. Mrs Often was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs Elinor L. Merrill-LaVale and Mrs Sandra A. Holtzman-Joppa MD; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be private. The Scarpelli Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

OFTEN 18 Oct 1992 KEYSER, W. VA.- Ruth M. Often, 70, of 500 Carkadon Lane, Keyser, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1992 at the Hampshire Memorial Long Term Care Unit in Romney, W. Va. Born Nov 15, 1921 in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late George E. and Eva (Grow) Ruhl. Mrs. Often was a 1939 graduate of Alleghany High School, Cumberland. She attended the Second Baptist Church, Keyser. Surviving are two sons, James R. Miller, New Creek, W.Va.; Robert D. Miller, Domorest Ga.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Rotruck Funeral Home, Keyser, Monday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. PENNEL 25 Jan 1997 Alva (Al) Wharton Pennel Jr., 85, of DeHaven Road, died Jan uary 24 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born December 19, 1911, in Everett, PA, he was the son of the late Alva W. Pennel Sr and the late Mary E.( Wigfield) Pennel. Also, predeceased by his wife Rhoda B. (Hardman) Pennel on January 10, 1976. Mr Pennel was a retired construction foreman for Hout Construction Co. and a retired farmer. Surviving are two sons: Daryl W Pennel and wife Janice and Kevin E. Pennel, both of Cumberland, Maryland. Two grandsons, Patrick W Pennel and Nicholas J Pennel, both of Cumberland, Maryland; a sister, Sara Foltz of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a dedicated friend Bill Earle of Cumberland. RALSTON 27 Jun 1998 FROSTBURG - Georgeanna C. Ralston, 79, of 100 Honeysuckle Lane, Frostburg, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 27, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born Sept. 26, 1918, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late Frank W. and Anna I. (Nelson) Carter. She also was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Ralston, on June 8, 1974; and two sisters, Shirley Arlene Carter and Fannie Elizabeth Carter. Mrs. Ralston retired from the Frostburg State University purchasing department in 1979 where she was an account clerk. She was a member of the Eckhart United Methodist Church. She also was a member and Past Matron of the Mountain Chapter 15, Order of the Eastern Star; and a member of the Past Matrons and Patrons of Western Maryland. Surviving are one son, John C. "Jerry" Ralston Sr. and wife Gail, Frostburg; one grandson, John C. Ralston Jr. and wife Jennifer, Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Shannon M. Imes and husband Rodney, Cumberland; three great-grandchildren, Carter Imes, Carson Imes and Brooke Ralston; one sister Lois Ferree, Eckhart; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Sage. REYNOLDS 29 Sep 1999 Mabel Miller Reynolds, 89, formerly of Baltimore Pike, Cumberland, died Friday Sep 24, 1999, at Cape Coral Fl, where she had been residing. Born, 29 March 1910 in Purcell, Bedford County, PA, she was the daughter of the late John Philip Miller and Estella Mountain Miller. She was also preceded in death by her late husbands Marshall "Mutt" Hardman and Ralph Reynolds; and brothers, Robert Miller and Walter T. Miller . Mrs. Reynolds was a retired employee of the Montgomery Ward Department Store. She was a member of Pleasant grove United Methodist Church, the Homemakers of Pleasant Grove, the American Legion, and the church choir. Surviving are two daughters; Marian Chambers and husband Rev. Richard of Greencastle PA; and Karen Durrett and husband Bruce of Cape Coral, FL a brother Fred Miller of Lewisburg PA; a sister Pearl Fisher of Baltimore Pike; seven grandchildren, Connie Anderson, Cindy House, Cathy Staggs, Mark Chambers, Paul Chambers, Tyra Durrett Winters, and Kara Durrett Dolan; 14 gr-grand-children 4 gr-gr-grand-children, and one gr-gr-gr-grand-child. Born Feb. 9, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late James Robert Rice Sr. and Mary Genevieve (Moore) Rice. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Robert Rice Jr. and Jack Rice; two sisters, Edna Carscaden and Dorothy Burkhard. Mr. Rice was retired from Alleghany Ballistics Lab after 41 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, and a member of Cumberland American Legion. RIZER 25 Apr 1996 Roy A Rizer Sr, 67, of Ft Ashby, died Wednesday 24 Apr 1996 at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser. Born March 10, 1929 in Cumberland, a son of the late Lewis Rizer and Bessie Shipley, he was retired from CSX, was an Air Force veteran of Korean War and was a coach of Little League in Ft Ashby for 10 years. SHERTZER xx xxx xxxx John Shertzer, aged 50, of Vale Summitt, was fatally injured when caught by a fall of rock in the Mertens Mine at Montell at 9 o'clock today. He was crushed about the loins and stomach and was rushed to Miners Hospital where he died about 1:35 PM. Patrick Higgins removed Mr Shertzer from under the rocks. The injured man's son Edward Schertzer, was on the heading and escaped. Mr Shertzer has a wife and 8 children. He is a brother to J Michael Shertzer, 349 N Centre St, who was summoned to Frostburg by the accident.

She is survived by 2 brothers, Kenneth Wilson of Oldtown Manor Apartments in Cumberland and Royce Wilson of Baltimore Pike; and by 2 sisters, Mrs Pauline Raines of Baltimore Pike and Mrs Elizabeth Schwenninger of Oldtown Road; and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dessie Bonner Wilson in 1976. He worked at the Celenese Fibers Corporation in the C A Department and then at the Schmidt Baking Company from which he retired. He was a member of the David Memorial United Methodist Church and attended the Christ United Methodist Church. Surviving are his loving companion, Alberta Grim of Cumberland; a son, Kenneth L Wilson Sr of Bel-Air; 4 daughters, Patricia O’Baker and Laraine Bennett, both of Cumberland; Darlene Moyer of Gaithersburg; Charlene Bovey of Cumberland; and also, a brother Royce Wilson of Cumberland; and 2 sisters, Mrs Pauline Raines and Mrs Elizabeth Schwenninger; and 16 grandchildren and 10 great grand children. WILSON 24 Jan 1999 Royce Austin Wilson, 76, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Jan 23, 1999, at Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit. Born Dec 9, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Samuel A Wilson and the late Adeline W (Twigg) Wilson. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Thornton, Carl, Harvey and Kenneth Wilson. Mr Wilson was retired from the Cumberland Steel Company where he was the shipping supervisor. He was a member of UCT. He was a veteran of the US Army during World War II with the Corps of Engineers where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Surviving are his wife, Verna "Betty" Robinette Wilson, Cumberland; a son, Sam Wilson and wife Cathy, Cumberland; a granddaughter, Amanda Lynn Wilson, Cumberland; two sisters, Pauline Raines and husband, Joh of Cumberland and Elizabeth Schwenninger and husband Ernie of Cumberland ; and several nieces and nephews.
