MAXINE RUBY MAPLES Maxine Ruby Maples, Billings, Missouri, departed this life on Sunday, July 6, 2003, in her home at the age of 80 years old. Maxine was born on September 10, 1922 in Stone County, Missouri. She married Glen E. Maples on December 29, 1938, and dairy farmed alongside him until his death on June 29, 1987. Mrs. Maples continued to raise beef cattle, and was a member of the Union Ridge Baptist Church Others who preceded her in death were her parents; and a sister, Wilma. MARJORIE YASUKAWA Marjorie Yasukawa, Kimberling City, departed this life on July 1, 2003 in Tablerock Healthcare Center at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 25 days. She was born July 6, 1916 in Windsor, Missouri. Marjorie graduated from high school in Kansas City, Mo. She served in the U.S. Marines from January 1940 to January 1942. Marjorie was a retired secretary and had lived in Kimberling City and the Cape Fair area for the past eight years coming from California. She was a dog lover and enjoyed watching the Oakland A's baseball team. Marjorie was of the Protestant faith. Survivors include: one son, Fred Ellis; one daughter, Charlene LaVear; one grandson and a host of other relatives and friends. No services are planned. DIXIE FRANCES WALLACE Dixie Frances Wallace, Marionville, departed this life at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2003, in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, at the age of 78 years old. Dixie was the daughter of William Monroe and Clarice (Pennington) Duke and was born on February 23, 1925 at the Oak Grove Community, northeast of Mt. Vernon. She was an active member of the Crane Assembly of God Church. Bible reading and prayer time were of utmost importance in her life. A devoted and loving mother and grandmother, she also enjoyed gospel singing, crocheting, fishing and time with her special friends. Dixie was united in marriage to Darrell Wallace, February 16, 1946. He passed away February 5, 1992. Others preceding her in death were her parents; a grandchild, Jamie Leanne; a sister, Lucille; two brothers, Harlan and Ronnie. MARY WHITEHEAD Mary Whitehead, Kimberling City, departed this life on June 29, 2003 in Tablerock Healthcare Center at the age of 89 years, seven months and 19 days. Mary was the daughter of J.B. and Ethel (Pounds) Henshaw and was born on November 10, 1913 in Hickman, Kentucky. Mary was a retired nurse and had lived in the area since 1998 coming from Annapolis, Missouri. She was of the Baptist faith. Her survivors include: two sons, James D. Grandel, Galena, Mo., departed this life June 3, 2000 in his home at the age of 83 years. He was the son of Samuel and Jesse (Patton) Grandel and was born February 27, l917 in Washington County, Pa. Dutch was a retired tool and dies repairman and had lived in the area the past 17 years coming from Massillon, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force. (JIM) SCHELSKE Jim was born to Alex and Julia Schelske Dec. 15., l922, in Tripp, S.D. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota. He enlisted and fought with distinction in WWII, was wounded twice in the Battle of the Bulge and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Jim courted Jean Feig while on convalescent leave. They married as Jim returned to the University. He graduated from the Institute of Technology and went on to a distinguished career as an open-pit mining engineer and manager. He pioneered improvements in mining, specialized in bringing risky projects on line, both in Northern Minnesota and in Ontario. Jim and Jean retired to homes in the fishing meccas of Red Lake, Ontario and Table Rock Lake, to indulge passions for woodworking, the outdoors and recreational-vehicle touring with Jean. More than a decade of medical battles, including six cancers left his body too vulnerable and brittle to sustain the treatment his fighting spirit requested. Jim died peacefully Sunday evening, May 21, surrounded by family, less than 12 hours after being admitted to a hospital for complications of treatment of carcinoid cancer. He is survived by Jean, his loving wife of 53 years; sons Bruce (Sharyn) Schelske and Mark (Janis Johnson) Schelske of Burnsville, Minn. and son Scott (Joan) Scheleske and grandchildren Janna, Derrick and Grant Schelske of Keewatin, Ontario. We miss him dearly. Jim was a member of Cape Fair Christian Church and Cape Fair Seniors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cape Fair Christian Church. LORIN W. LAEGER Rev. Lorin W. Laeger of Aurora passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at 6:00 a.m. in St. John's Regional Health Center following a short illness, at the age of 79. Rev. Laeger was born January 22, l921 in Cortland, Nebraska. He was an Army Air Force Veteran of World War II, a part-time minister at the Liberty Church, a member of Aurora Lions Club, Masonic Lodge #129 of Monett, a life member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and was past district Governor. CATHERINE LUCILLE HOWARD DAVIS Catherine Lucille Howard Davis died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2000 in the Ozark Methodist Manor, in Marionville, at the age of 81 years, four months and 10 days old. She was the daughter of Charles Nathan and Bonnie Virginia Forrester Howard, born May 25, l9l9 in Marionville, Mo. She completed grade school at Honey Creek County School at Marionville, and had lived in this area all of her life, except for seven months, in California. The past 46 years was in Aurora. On November 12, l938, in Cassville, Mo., she was married to Lester Howard Davis, a widower with two small daughters. She attended the Fellowship Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Her survivors include her husband Lester of the home; a son and his wife, Charles and Betty Davis of Marionville, two daughters, Doris Jean and her husband, Eddie Lewis of Aurora, Linda Jones of Clearwater, Florida; two step- daughters, Barbara Skaggs and her husband Eugene Langley of Aurora, Anna Marie and her husband, Glendon Walker of Springfield; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren; two sisters, June Johnson and Virginia Wood, both of Marionville, and several nephews and nieces. DANIEL LEE KETCHUM Daniel Lee Ketchum, Lampe, Mo. departed this life October 7, 2000 in his home at the age of 56 years after a long bout with cancer. He was the son of Robert Ketchum and Patricia (Rouse) Norman, born May 26, l944 in Kansas City, Mo. Dan retired from Ford Motor Company, Claycomo, Mo. after 30 years and moved to the Ozarks where he worked for Silver Dollar City. He married Connie Jane Flanary in l977 and had served in the U.S. Navy. Dan was a member of Our Lady of the Cove Catholic Church and a Third Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Liscum, Kirbyville, Mo. departed this life October 6, 2000 near Stillwater Resort, Branson at the age of 70 years. Thomas, the son of Thomas and Mary (Clifton) Liscum was born August 1, 1930 in Great Falls, Montana. Tom was owner/operator of Liscum Water and Waste Water and had lived in the area the past 15 years coming form Longmont, Colo. VELMA AGNES WINCHEL-SMITH Velma Agnes Winchel-Smith, 97, died at 8:05 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2000 at Hudson House in Aurora from complications following a stroke three weeks prior. She was born September 30, l903 in Carroll Co., Eureka Springs, Ark., the daughter of Robert Fox and Nella M. (Gates) Burris. Preceding her in death was a brother, Delbert, and her daughter Helen Eileen (Wilder) Brinley. She married C.K. Smith of Marionville June l985. He preceded her in death in Jan. 2000. In her youth she became a prize winning speed typist for Underwood Typewriter Co. in New York City in the l920's. In later years she cared for the elderly in her home for many years, and retired at the age of 72. She made her dedication to Jehovah God in l950. She is survived by her grandson, David Brinley and his wife Mary; two great-grandsons Nicholas and Alexander, all of Marionville; two nieces, Mrs. Catherine Norris, Hartville, Ga.; Mrs Betty Carter, Leitchfield Ky.; and several cousins. KEVIN RAY BROWN Kevin Ray Brown, Marionville, passed away at 1:42 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2001 in a two vehicle wreck in Aurora, at the age of 42. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and worked for General Motor Chevrolet Division until l991 when he retired after 39 years. William was a member of Our Lady of the Cove Catholilc Church and active in Knights of Columbus. He married Marion June Keelin in l954 and the moved to the Branson area in l993. William was an avid golfer and always had a ready smile for everyone he met. He will be missed by all! "Ho" Andress, Reeds Spring, Mo. departed this life March 30, 2001 in Tablerock Retirement Village, Kimberling City, Mo. at the age of 83 years. He was the son of Albert and Mary Belle (Nicklaus) Andress, born September 1, 1917 in Jefferson County, Ind. Harold served with the 17th Construction Battalion (Navy Seabees) during World War II in both the Atlantic and South Pacific Theaters. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Carpenters Local #631 in Indiana for 60 years. Harold was a member of the American Legion Jefferson Post #9, Madison, Indiana and American Legion Post #637 in Kimberling City. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1969 in Madison, Ind. Harold is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry E. Andress in January, l987; a brother, John C. She was born in Crane, Mo., the daughter of Bird and Sim Huffhines. In March of 1941, she married George Arthur Bryan of Springfield, a descendant of the Polks and Campbells that founded Springfield. She was widowed through George's service to his country during World War II. Lee's Summit, Mo. became her home for many years during which she worked as the receptionist at the Lee's Summit Clinic for 27 years. After her retirement she came to live with her daughter in Willard in l990. She was a member of the Willard Community Christian Church. She is survived by her daughter Nancy Morris, Willard; two grandsons, Bryon and Jimmy Morris, both of Springfield, five-great grandchildren, Brody, Taylor Samantha, Conner and J. D., all of Springfield; a brother, Bill Huffhines, Springfield; and sister, Betty Warford, Garden City, Mo. TOMMY EUGENE GOLD Tommy Eugene Gold, 57, Hurley, died at 11:46 a.m., Saturday, March 24, 2001, in his home following a long illness. He was born March 5, l944, in Hurley, to Leslie and Vesta (Merritt) Gold. He lived in Hurley his entire life. Her married Lois Mitchell on June 23, l961. She survives. BLANCHE HELEN SCOTT HERREID A memorial service for Blanche Herreid, 71, who died in Peoria, Ill., on May 1, 2000, will be held at the Crane Community Cemetery Saturday, April 14, 2001 at 9 a.m. Anyone who knew and loved Blanche is welcome to attend. A service for her son, Scott Herreid, will be held at the same time. Their ashes will be interned and flowers will be planted. Blanche loved her home in Galena and had fond memories of the friends and family she had there. It was her wish to return home and have her ashes buried near her family members. Blanche was born on May 3, l928, in Galena, Mo. to Warner and Bessie Grisham Scott. She married Wayne Herreid in Peoria, Ill. on Feb. 12, 1949. He died on March 10, l997 in New Orleans, La. She was also preceded in death by one son Scott Herreid, 50 of Albuquerque, NM and by two brothers, Jack Scott and Harry Scott both of Galena, Mo., and one nephew Warner Gilbert of Galena, Mo. MARGARET ELLEN WHITE Margaret Ellen White, 91, passed away March 28, 2001, in Sonshine Manor, Republic, Mo. Margaret was born December 22, l909 in Hurley, Missouri, to Samuel Labrenth and Mary Elizabeth Conrad, the sixth child of eleven children. She grew up in Hurley, Mo. where she was a member of the Hurley Methodist Church. Most of her life was spent on a farm near Union City, Mo., being a homemaker and taking care of her family. Margaret loved to garden. With the death of her husband, Lloyd E. White in l974, she moved to Republic, Mo., where she lived the remainder of her life. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd E. "Bill" White; a son, Earl Eugene white; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis White; a grandson, Lloyd Dee White; two sons-in-law, Bill Meacheam and Blanton Barrett; seven brothers; and two sisters. She was born on June 5, 1929 in Van Buren, Ark., the daughter of Onis and Mary (Thomas) Flippo. Eudell was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and member of the Cedar Valley Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. Survivors include: her husband of over 54 years, Cleo "Buck" Scott of the home in Ridgedale; two sons, Rick of Ridgedale, Mo. and Dennis of Hollister, Mo.; a sister, Evelyn Cornelison of Reeds Spring, Mo.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. ROBERT DEAN STONE Robert Dean Stone, Galena, Mo., departed this life October 14, 2001 at his home at the age of 66 years. He was the son of Albert and Edna (Burgesen) Stone and was born April 30, l935 in Alta, Iowa. Robert was a retired administrator of vocational-technical education and had served in the U.S. Air Force. He was an instrument maker of Dulcimers and Hammer Dulcimers and a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Davenport, Ia. He was united in marriage to Edith Fulton, May 31, 1959 and they had made their home in the area the past two years coming from Iowa. Survivors include: his wife, Edith of the home; one son, Michael Stone of Iowa City, Ia.; one daughter, Colleen Budelier and her husband Gary of Davenport, Ia.; one brother, James Stone of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Janet Cornish of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. LURLA JANE ELLIS TEAGUE Lurla Jane Ellis Teague, 99, passed away at 4:05 a.m. on Wednesday, October, 17, 2001 in the Mt. Vernon Place Care Center. Mrs. Teague was born in Flat Creek, Barry County, Mo. on Nov. 12, l901 to Joel Oscar Ellis and Francis Emmaline Williams Ellis. Lurla was an avid reader, conversationalist who actively passed on her heritage to family. She was a conversant on worldly affairs and kept abreast of current affairs. She wrote articles for Cappers Weekly Newspaper of Topeka, Kan. for several years. She was a devout Christian and a long time member of the Presbyterian Church of Mt. Vernon, Mo. She married Lenard Teague on June 11, l921. To this union four children were born., He preceded her in death on February 6, l975. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Merle, James, Gerald and Frank and one sister Pearl Teague; one grandchild and one great-grandchild Survivors include three daughters Helen Caul, LaCross, Wis., Mildred Little, Springfield, Mo., June Hicks, Mt. Edwards officiating, burial followed in the Mars Hill Cemetery near Crane, Missouri. JOE L. BUTLER Joe L. Butler, 81, Carthage, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002, at McCune Brooks Hospital. Mr. Butler was born June 13, 1920, at Crane, Mo., to John Butler and Ina Garrison. He was the plant manager in Carytown for MFA for 17 years. He also owned and operated several gas stations in Carthage as well as mowing yards after his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage and the Jasper VFW. He married Mary D. Haddock, in 1939, and she survives. One brother preceded him in death. Other survivors include two sons, Joe D. Butler and John C. Butler, both of Carthage; a daughter, Patsy Grimes, Owassa, Okla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. GERTRUDE DOTSIE BAKER CLICK Gertrude Dotsie Baker Click died at 6:42 p.m. Tuesday January 22, 2002, in the Ozarks Methodist Manor in Marionville, at the age of 94 years, eight months and five days old. Mrs. Click, was born on May 17, l907 in Mt. Home, Arkansas to Andrew Henry and Hettie Belle Dewey Baker. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a son, Jackie Click and a daughter, Donna Barber. OSCAR D. CURBOW Mr. Curbow, 84, died at his home on Wednesday, January 23, 2002. Oscar Devern Curbow was born to David M. and Reitha (Wright) Curbow on a farm near Hurley, Mo. on February 5, l917. He lived his youth on the family farm, attending Union City Grammar School and Hurley High School Loss of sight in one eye prevented his serving in the military during WWII, but he served his country by working in the North American Aviation Co. Defense Plant of Kansas City. His deep Christian faith led him into the ministry for the Church of the Nazarene. For a number of years, he served as pastor of churches in Missouri and Kansas. Under his leadership a new Nazarene church was built in Union City. Later he settled in the Springfield area and became a partner in the Mid-America Business College. Later on a farm near Ozark he became a successful dairy farmer. During his entire life he had a love of animals. After retirement, he moved to Branson where he worked at Silver Dollar City. There he was a favorite of visitors who came back year after year to chat with him. Many will remember Oscar's Lemonade Stand in the summers as his hot Wassail Stand in the winters. He liked people and people liked him. He had a sense of humor that always brought a smile and a laugh. 1914 in Stone County, Mo. Verla was a lifelong resident of the Crane area except for a 2-year period when she was with her son in Illinois. In l995 Verla went to live with her daughter in Olathe, Kans. and had been a resident at Good Samaritan Center since l998. She was a member of the Crane Bible Church and attended Overland Park Baptist Temple and Basehor Baptist Church while living in Kansas. Verla was preceded in death by her husband of 21 years, Barry C. Hilton, in l954 and her husband, Fred R. Ehrhart to whom she was also married 21 years, in l988 and one grandchild, Ann Hilton of Decatur, Ill. She was married to Floyd S. Helmick, and he preceded her in death on March 14, l984. HENRY (HANK) LOUIS KOERBER Henry Louis (Hank) Koerber, passed away at 7:40 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2002 in the Ozarks Methodist Manor in Marionville. He was 73. He was born in Meta, Missouri on November 13, l928 to Henry Joseph and Barbara Ann Haller Koerber. He was married on February 4, l956 in St. Louis, Mo., to the former, Lawonda Louise Cooper. Myers, 86, of Raytown, Mo. passed away January 19, 2002 in a Blue Springs hospital after a short illness. She was born April 6, l915 in Stone County close to Crane, Mo. to Harve and Gertie Garner. Dorothy was a member of North Blvd. United Methodist Church in Independence, Mo. She graduated from Crane High School in l934. During World War II she worked at Lake City packing bullets and then she worked for Sears in Kansas City. She retired in l972 after 26 years with Sears. Dorothy married Robert Myers February 10, l961. He preceded her in death. Also preceding her were her parents, a sister Nola Sylvester, two brothers Elmer and Gene Garner. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Bertha Hawley, two sisters-in-law, Noveta Garner and Mary Garner and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was a member of North Blvd United Methodist Church in Independence, Mo. Services were held in Floral Hills Chapel in Kansas City, Mo. on January 22, 2002. Officiating were the Rev. "BUD" SCHNELL Harley C. "Bud" Schnell, Kimberling City, Mo., 88 past away at 5:20 a.m., Monday, January 21, 2002 in Tablerock Retirement Village after a 5-year illness. Bud was born May 29, 1913 in Whitewater, Kansas. After graduating high school, Bud enlisted in the Army Air Corps in March, l940. He attended technical school in the 3718th and became an instructor in single engine planes. He spent 15 months over seas in the European theatre and was entitled to wear the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Bud was discharged as a Master Sergeant at Fort Logan, Co. in September of 1945. Bud met Mazelle Moelling and was united in marriage, March 28, 1941. He enjoyed all music and was an active singer in barbershop quartets in which he was a tenor with the Keenagers in Kimberling City. Bud was with Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas as a supervisor on flight test for 18 years. After moving to Table Rock Lake in l963, he owned and operated AAA Marine for 21 years. He was in "WHO'S WHO" in Missouri in l974. Bud was a member of Kimberling City United Methodist Church and a member of Kimberling City Elks Lodge #2505. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. Bud was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest daughter Marianne Spradling. Survivors include: his wife Hazelle of the home; two daughters Sandy Schnell and Nancy George, both of Kimberling City; two granddaughters, Brenna Rogers of Ozark and Pam Askren of Willard; six wonder great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. WALTER JUNIOR MCKNIGHT Walter Junior McKnight, 55, Verona, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at 2:47 p.m. in a local doctors office. He was born December 15, 1946 in Crane, Mo. to the Rev. Walter Ralph and Elsie Faye Daugherty McKnight. Junior was preceded in death by his parents. He was a lifelong area farmer, a local auctioneer for 34 years owning McKnight Auction Company and worked for Syntex Agri Business for 29 years. He was a member of the Aurora Canopy Lodge #248, a 32 Degree Mason. He loved spoiling his grandchildren, farming, coon hunting and working auctions. He married Sharon Kay Coffman on May 8, l964 in Crane, and she survives. They shared 38 years of marriage. He was born to Dan and Dorothy Jones Stone on August 9, l941 in Reeds Spring, Mo. He was a dairy farmer. He was preceded in death by his father. Doris was a l941 graduate of Crane High School, a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church, avid golfer, beloved bridge player, 30 year Amway distributor, handbag saleslady, and laundromat proprietor. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Chloe and Freda; a brother, Derril; her husband Jim; and her youngest daughter, Cindy. She is survived by two daughters, Toni Mackie and her husband Dave, Ventura, Calif.; and Terri Brader and husband Neal, Springfield, Mo., seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, her sisters Georganna Brashers, Marionville, Ethel Jordan and Angela Williams, and her brother J. LEE EFTON MARTIN Lee Efton Martin, 81, Crane, died at 11:15 a.m. Friday, November 23, 2001 in Cox Walnut Lawn Hospital, Springfield. He was born January 22, l910 in Stone County, Missouri, the second child of Thomas Efton Martin and Hazel Edna Gold. He was a farmer and machinist, retiring from Lily Tulip Cup Manufacturing, where he was known as Dad Martin from 1957 until l985. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during WW II. He was a member of the Crane Bible Baptist Church. He was married to Nellie Clevenger December 22, 1944 and they made their home in the Crane area. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Karen Arganbright, and two grandsons, David Nathan Arganbright and Bryan Kasinger. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; six children, Edna Mayne, Crane, Marge Kasinger, Billings, Charles Martin, Crane, Jean Stapp, Neosho, Randy Martin, Blackfoot, Idaho, and Dennis Martin, Springfield; 27 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Vena Machenheimer, Bertha Andrews, Eva Wallberg, and Inez Rice, all of Seattle, Washington. DUDLEY WYATT "DUB" PETERS Dudley Wyatt "Dub" Peters, Crane, Mo. passed away at 3:15 a.m., Sunday November 25, 2001 in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, at the age of 82 years. He was born April 29, 1919 in Stone County to Amos Layfette and Jessie May (Brown) Peters. Mr. Peters was a lifelong resident of Crane and was Postmaster from 1945 to 1983. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 413, Lions Club and served 50 years on the Crane Broiler Festival Committee. He was an elder and treasurer in the Crane Christian Church where he was a member for over 70 years. He served in the Army Air Force from l941 to l945. He was a member of the 2nd Air Service Squadron, Fifth Air Force, stationed in the South Pacific. Prior to his Air Force service he spent one year in the 2nd Cavalry in Fort Riley, Kansas. Mr. Peters was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Survivors include: his wife of 55 years, Augustine; two daughters Deborah Merrill land her husband, Tom of Topeka, Kans. and Denise Reinert and her husband John of Billings, Mo.; two grandchildren, Amanda Powell and her husband, David of Fayetteville, N.C. and Kyle Reinert of Billings, Mo.
