Wahkiakum County Eagle-February 1996 Verner William Hedman Age 97, of Whitefish, Mont., died at the North Valley Hospital Extended Care. He was born at Wausa, Neb., to Peter and Fredricka Hedman, Swedish immigrants and attended school in Wisc., and North Dak. He homesteaded with his family at Opheim, Mont., in 1916 and moved to the Flathead valley in 1926. He was married to Edena H. Cleave May 22, 1931. He worked as a smoke-chaser in Glacier Nat. park and she was teaching school. He also worked as a guide and packer in the wilderness area and in the logging and hunting camps of the Flathead valley and as a carpenter for the Great Northern Railway for 20 years, retiring in 1963. He enjoyed his family and music and was named North Valley Extended Care Citizen of the Year in 1964. Survivors include four sons, Cleave of Cathlamet, Allan, of Hayden Lake, Ida., Wayne, or Hamilton, Mont., and Gene, of Whitefish; two daughters, Carol Newbury, Whitefish and Joyce Emmert of Hot Springs, Mont.; four sisters, 25 grandchildren and many great and great-great- grandchildren. His wife died in 1991 and a daughter Barbara Koppy died in 1984. Services were held Feb. 10 at Whitefish.
