Unknown Publication-February 17, 1994 Ruben Ross Beaverton resident Ruben T. Ross, formerly of Eugene, died Feb. 12 of age-related causes at age 87. At his request, no services will be held. A lifelong resident of Oregon, Ross was born July 16, 1906, in Astoria, the son of Frank and Mary Rinell Ross. He graduated from the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he was an outstanding track performer under the late Col. Bill Hayward. In 1928, he participated in the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Ross first worked as a school teacher and coach, teaching three years at Wilson Intermediate School in Eugene, and nine years at Gabel Country Day School in Portland. he then became associated with Globe Lumber Co. in Walton and with Oregon Lumber Sales in Eugene. Ross later owned City Center Lodge in Eugene. One of the co-founders of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, Ross also served a number of years on the West Coast Lumber Associate board of directors and was affiliated with Theta Chi fraternity. He was also a member and past vice president of the Eugene Country Club. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Ross Hering of Portland; a sister, Rosemary Malen; a brother, Lennart; and three grandchildren. His wife of 51 years, Edra Mathews Ross, died in 1982. Finley-Sunset Hills in Portland is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be to UO track or to the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.
