June 06, 2001 PATRICIA A. CHAMBERLAINE ADELANTO - Patricia A. Chamberlaine, 71, passed away at her Adelanto home on June 6, 2001. Pat or "Mama Bear" as she was known by her employees was the city administrator/manager for the city of Adelanto for the better part of 16 years. Elected to her first City Council in 1970, Pat was recalled over the issue of the High Desert Casino, which ultimately proved to be a big boost to the Adelanto City economy. During her hiatus from government service she was founder and coeditor of the Adelanto Independent newspaper where she remained until she was asked to take the position of city administrator in 1980. Pat retired because of poor health in 1996. Mrs. Chamberlaine was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Lloyd and son Alan Lloyd. She is survived by a granddaughter Jenny Ann Chamberlaine and a grandson Ryan James McGowan both of Joshua Tree; adopted sister and best friend Mary L. Scarpa; nieces Barbara Scarpa-Coffey and husband Terry of Capetola, Jennifer J. Scarpa of Las Vegas, Nev.; nephew John R. Scarpa and wife Sharon of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Jeffery W. Scarpa and wife Joyce of Camarillo. Educated at St. Vincent's Academy in her hometown of Shreveport, La., she is still remembered by her many friends in Adelanto and the rest of the Victor Valley Community. Smith, an Apple Valley resident of 25 years, went to his heavenly home June 15, 2001. Born in Lamoni, Iowa, on Dec. 28, 1923, John was a much loved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. A career Army man, Smith served during World War II in Africa and the invasions of Italy, France and Germany. He remained in Germany with the Peace Time Occupation Forces for a number of years. John served on the Army's Rifle Team of Marksmen based at Fort George Meade, Md., until disability forced him from active duty in 1961. He enjoyed bowling in Apple Valley and Victorville leagues until the advance of cancer caused him to cease participation. STANFORD APPLE VALLEY - Robert Philmore Stanford, 72, was born in Oklmulgee, Okla., on May 2, 1929, and died at the age of 72 in his Apple Valley home, where he had lived for the past 14 years, on June 2, 2001. He served in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a chief machinist mate after 20 years of honorable service. After teaching for one year at the National Trade School in Los Angeles, he became the first black man to be hired by Los Angeles County as an air conditioning journeyman. When he retired some 18 years later, he had become a supervising foreman responsible for all Los Angeles County buildings from Van Nuys east to the San Bernardino County line. Following his retirement, he created Philmore's Heating Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Co., in Apple Valley and made service calls up until he was hospitalized the third week of April. For the past 22 years, he actively participated in tournament tennis. He was a member of the United States Tennis Association and over the past few years was routinely ranked among the top 10 in his age categories. He was a regular participant in their yearly invitational tournament at Rancho Bernardo. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, where he lettered in gymnastics and baseball. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Southwest Community College, also in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Los Angeles University Cathedral, pastored by Dr. Gene Scott and was a friend of Bill Wilson for more than 25 years. In addition to his wife Gloria, of 32 years, he is survived by his brother Raymond; son Richard of Los Angeles; daughter Glovioell Rowland, Ph.D. and son-in-law Steven Rowland and granddaughter Caprice Rowland, all of Pasadena. MCMANIGAL BARSTOW - Gary Leon "Mac" McManigal, 60, a 20-year resident of Barstow, died on Sunday, June 10, 2001. McManigal was born June 4, 1940 in Los Angeles. He retired from the Air Force as a senior master sergeant in February 1980. For 15 years, he was the senior contract administrator for Acquisition Command at Fort Irwin. McManigal was an avid computer user and whiz. He liked crossword puzzles and sports, was an avid reader and loved his family. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 3637. Scarbrough was born Claribel Holden on June 22, 1921 near Teresita, Mo., and was a resident of the Barstow area and a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1962. She was an adult teacher and officer in her church, a tutor in the Laubach Literacy program, a Toastmaster (DTM) and a partner in family businesses. Survivors include her husband, Clyde of Barstow; two sons, Donald of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Randy of Upland; a brother, James Holden of Sedalia, Mo.; and granddaughter Denise Pauley of Chandler, Ariz. ANDERSON-HARTWELL-PRUETT DAGGETT - Jessica Berniece Anderson (Hartwell) Pruett died June 7, 2001 in Daggett. Pruett was born June 25, 1909 in Concordia, Kan., the daughter of Louis E. and Florence (Hill) Anderson. Her early years were spent on the family farm in eastern Nebraska before moving to Omaha, where she married in 1927. In 1941 the family moved to California. She is survived by three of her five children: Charlotte (Hartwell) Valley of Rosamond, Sir Rodney Hartwell of Daggett, and Tyrone Pruett of Torrance. She leaves 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She has 62 living descendants. Pruett died following a series of strokes. She had been a resident of Daggett since March 1, 2001. In 1999 in Daggett she celebrated her 90th birthday with a large gathering of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. For many years Pruett was Dean of Fellows of The Augustan Society Inc., headquartered in Daggett at the old Funk-Muir mansion. She was a member of the Hereditary Order of Armigerous Augustans and a past member of the United Federation of Doll Clubs. In the 1960s she began a long career as both a collector and dealer in old and rare dolls. This interest was communicated TO other members of her family. She was one of the founding members of the Bustle and Bonnett Doll Club of the South Bay area in Southern California. Her full-time caregiver for the past four months was her grandson, Sir John Caffey, who was on a leave of duty as curator of the Augustan Museum in Daggett. Married Wayne Harlan Ives April 5, 1945 in Tilden, Nebraska. He passed away March 16, 1995. It seems the number one job in Jewel's life was taking care of people and making sure they were OK. She was an avid walker who took time to smile and greet people, and even had little snacks for the dogs on her route. She loved the little children and always had time to give them hugs and kisses. She enjoyed playing the piano, and entertained people at the Senior Citizen's Center. She also loved to dance, sweep, polish and shine her home to a high gloss. Jewel's faith was strong, and she loved her Lord Jesus, not once complaining during her illness. She made so many friends in her two years in Kanab, and we all have been truly blessed to know her. OAK HILLS - Edward William French Sr. (to all of his grandchildren he was Poppy) passed away on June 15, 2001. He was 75 years old. He was born in Binghamton, New York, on May 22, 1926. At 2 years of age his family moved to Los Angeles. He lived there until he was 22 years old. He met Hester Boose in 1948 and they were married for 52 years. Ed French lived in Downey for 30 years and has lived in Oak Hills for 12 years. He worked for M&M Housemoving Company for 25 years and Almas International for 20 years. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy. June 4, 2001 ALARIC H. HEIDORN VICTORVILLE -Alaric Herman Heidorn went home to be with his savior on June 4, 2001, after spending 10 days in the Highland Palms Health Care Center in Highlands. He was born in Petersburg, Ind., on May 5, 1916. He had lived in Victorville for the last five years. Mr. Heidorn retired as supervisor of the Electronics Department at the USMC in Barstow in 1971, after 30 years of service. In his earlier years, he was active with Boy Scouts and was an ordained deacon in the First Baptist Church of Barstow. He was the youngest son of Emeline and Henry D. Heidorn and brother to Leo Heidorn, Arnold Heidorn and Benjamin Heidorn. All proceeded him in death. Alaric loved to build and rebuild electronic equipment, especially radios. He could always be found at his work bench in the garage. His military career began in 1941 in the 749th Military Police Unit of the Army. He exited military service in 1946. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Fern K. Heidorn, his daughter Sandra K. Patterson, his son Gary L. Heidorn and his son Alan D. Heidorn. WILSON VICTOR VALLEY - Elizabeth F. Wilson, 86, died June 8, 2001, of cancer at Merrill Gardens in Citrus Heights. Born in Walnut, Mi., she lived in Citrus Heights for 2½ years and in the Victor Valley area for 38 of her 42 years in California. She was a teacher with The Victor Valley Union High District for 20 years. She taught history at Hook Junior High School. She belonged to AAUW University Women, Retired Teachers Organization, attended Holmes Junior College in Goodman, Mi., Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, Mi., and earned got her degree from the University of Redlands in Redlands. She is survived by her husband of 63 years Joseph C. Wilson Sr. and daughter Diane Wilson Sommer both of Citrus Heights; brother C.H. Frederick of Mississippi; sister Catherine Frederick of Ohio; grandsons Chip and Michael Sommer of Citrus Heights and Joe Wilson of Apple Valley; granddaughter Carrie Wilson of Apple Valley; son in law Charles Sommer of Citrus Heights; and daughter in law Gayle Wilson of Apple Valley. She will live on in the memories of those who knew and loved her. She will be missed. Born in Springfield, Ill., on March 11, 1939, he has been a Wrightwood resident since 1978. He retired in 1994 after 36 years with Armstrong World Industries. Since his retirement he had started a firewood business in the Tri Community. He kept a lot of Wrightwood warm in the winter months. A faithful husband, a loving and devoted father, a man with the patience of Job. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and neighbors. He leaves behind his mother Mildred Elswick of Wrightwood; a married daughter Tracy Burke of San Pedro; sons Robert Gregory, 21, Jamie Darren, 14, Brandon Lee, 10, Tyler Thomas, 6; daughters Crystal Dawn, 23, and Jessica Robin, 18; grandson Zackary Hatheway, 6, and former wife of 24 years Teresa Jean all of Wrightwood. GREESON YERMO - Jamie Hope Greeson, 53, a 35-year resident of Barstow and Yermo, died on Monday, June 11, 2001 in Yermo. Mrs. Greeson was born on April 16, 1948 in Detroit. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Alvin Greeson, and son, Timothy Greeson, of the home; her mother, Lorraine Mitchell of Barstow; daughters Terri Greeson of Barstow and Donna Shaver of Washington; daughter Mary Shaver-Davila, son-in-law Richard Davila and grandson Ricardo Davila of Barstow; two brothers, James Wright of Davenport, Wash., and Charles Williams of Arizona; and two sisters, Carol Clark and Cindy Jonas, both of Barstow. Out-of-town guest and close friend Arleen Reed-Powell of Haviland, Kan., was well as Mary Spradlin, Bea Lockridge and Mary Wright were with Mrs. Gleeson at the time of her death. PETTIT YERMO - William Robert "Papy" Pettit, 82, a nine-year resident of Yermo, died on June 16, 2001 in Barstow. Pettit was born Sept. 11, 1918 in Okeema, Okla., and served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring as a master sergeant. He was a long-time Barstow resident who served as a police officer with the Barstow Police Department for 16 years. Pettit was a former resident of Yucaipa for seven years, a member of Barstow Elks Lodge No. 1920 for 41 years, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 797 in Yermo. He was an adjutant with the American Legion and was the parks commissioner with the community services district. He liked fishing. Pettit is survived by his wife, Marie Pettit of Yermo; daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Robert Moore of Cibola, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Sally Parker of Bullhead City, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Valery Parker of Barstow; son and daughter-in-law, David and Debbie Parker of Apple Valley; grandson Daniel Chapman of Madrid, Ind., granddaughter Kalissa Maki of Wolfford Heights, Ca.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
