'Cap' Mettler dies at 75

Calvin A. "Cap" Mettler, 75, of Lodi died July 4 of natural causes at a local hospital following a short illness. He was born Dec. 26, 1917, in Lodi.

He lived in the house he was born in for all his 75 years, except for 3 1/2 years spent in the U.S. Air Force. After graduating from Lodi High School, he attended College of Commerce in Stockton.

Mr. Mettler helped in the founding and building of the Zion Reformed Church, where he served as an elder and a deacon. He also helped in the founding of Lodi Memorial Hospital. He was a past director of Lodi Community Winery for 25 years and Mokelumne Fire Department. He was active in many youth organizations, including 4-H leadership, coaching youth athletics and church Sunday school. He was involved in the Victor Farm Bureau, Rotary, SIRS, and was a member of Woodbridge Golf and County Club. He owned at operated his family's vineyard until his retirement.

He and his wife, Marguerite, recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Arthur Mettler; and two sisters, Meta Kirschenmann and Regina "Rex" Mehlhaff.

Mr. Mettler is survived by his wife, Marguerite "Mag" Mettler of Lodi; two daughters, Carolyn Collings of Reno and Janice Luiz of Lodi; two sons, Daniel Mettler of Lodi and William Mettler of Herald; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Reformed Church with Rev. Greg Myers of the church presiding. Committal will be private at Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lodi Funeral Home.
