Early experience rich in Old World tradition, a strong sense of responsibility and work ethic was instilled in Mae during the years of youth spent in Wichita, Kansas. She graduated from Wichita East High School in 1939. Mae entered the work force with customary enthusiasm in efforts as varied as the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge Tennessee, Dr. Bert McClure's dental practice, the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce and Missouri Granite. She and sister Florence operated two popular restaurant clubs in St. Joseph, Suzanne's and the Miami Club, where she met Milton Herman after he graduated from General Staff and Command School in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1948. He fell deeply in love with her vibrant spirit and love of life. A persistent high mileage courtship involving many trips from St. Joseph to Wichita and back again, permitted their love to blossom and she and Milton were married on November 4, 1953 in Springfield, Missouri. She and Milton owned and operated the Bazaar Gifts & Imports boutique, located at 2520 Frederick Avenue from 1965 to 1980. Her keen eye, merchandising intuition and love of people, helped create a unique and successful business, drawing clients from the four-state area and as far away as New York and Los Angeles. This achievement was recorded in the January 6, 1969 issue of Gift and Tableware report, a national trade publication. She traveled to merchandise markets in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, and Kansas City. Mae's last work outside the home was as manager of the Surrey Shoppe, where she continued to enjoy the company of customers and co-workers. With Milton's encouragement, they shared the excitement of operatic performances and televised tennis tournaments. Entertaining friends and family was deeply rewarding to Mae and she was happy to share what she knew to be true until the end. Mae volunteered her enthusiasm and effort with the American Lung Association and other worthy organizations.
