Notes for CHARLES ALBERT HOWARD:

The wife of his grandson Chester Simmons, Roa Bolley Simmons tells that Charles Howard was a very prominent citizen of Albion, Indiana.  His elaborate tombstone indicates he was a man of some prominence and wealth.  He was involved with the Opera House, Saloon owner, and perhaps a basket factory.  Despite his notoriety the local history books fail to mention him.

Charles A. Howard is listed as the proprietor of the Albion Opera House in the 1890 Indiana State Gazetteer and Business Directory.

Notes for MATILDA BUTTERBAUGH:

No firm documentation exists as to Matilda's lineage but I strongly believe she might be related to Joseph Butterbaugh (1761-1857), a Revolutionary War Veteran.  Records place him dying at Lexington, Ohio, just down the road from the believed birthplace of Charles Howard in Bellville, Ohio.  Joseph however is more of the age to have been her grandfather.  Our Matilda is listed in the 1860 Pickaway county, Ohio, Salt Creek Township census (age 21 of Ohio) along with George Butterbaugh, age 60 of Penn., and Meary, age 19 of Ohio.  In the 1850 Ohio census a possible match to our Matilta may exist with the George Butterbaugh family in Hocking county, Ohio but I strongly doubt this is a match.  (George, 63 of Maryland, Anna 28 of Ohio, Appoline 18 of PN., Margaret 16 of Pn., Matilda 13 of PN. -- the age and place of birth do not match our Matilda)

The Albion New Era, May 3, 1877:  The wife of Chas Howard was conveyed to the asylum for the insane on Monday last on account of her mind being deranged, which was caused by her recent severe spell of sickness.  This is indeed sad and Mr. Howard has the sympathy of the entire community.

OBITUARY:  The Albion New Era, Thursday, June 10, 1880 Mrs. Howard, the wife of Charles A. Howard, of Albion, died after a very brief illness one day last weekend and was buried Saturday.  She had been unwell for some time, but was not considered dangerously ill until shortly before she died.

The census lists her parents place of birth as Pennsylvania.

Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON SIMMONS:

OBITUARY:  FORMER ALBION MAN DEAD - George W. Simmons, aged 73, died at his home in Kendallville Monday afternoon from hardening of the arteries.  He had been ailing for some months, and was bedfast the past four weeks.  Death came peacefully as he slept.  Born in Jefferson township, Noble county, September 28, 1857, the son of Abijah and Margaret Branyan Simmons, he grew to manhood there.  He had lived all his life in Noble county with the exception of a few years in Kansas.  He was one of 12 children.  He was united in marriage to Loressa Howard, April 26, 1898.  Mr. and Mrs. Simmons moved to Albion soon after and remained here until 1901, when they located in Kendallville, where they have since resided.  He was recognized by his many friends as industrious, frugal, a sincere friend and a good neighbor, and was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran church at Albion all of his life.  Surviving are the widow, two sons, Howard of Monroeville, and Chester of Ft. Wayne, and two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Koder and Mrs. Liela Kessler, both of Chicago, and four grandchildren.  Also two sisters, Mrs. Jane Bushong of Avilla, and Mrs. Ollie Randall of Chicago.

Family notes:  George made his living by using a team of horses to pull a "dray" wagon.  As such, he would deliver goods for local businesses to customers located in town.  Thus, today he would be called a truck driver.  Loressa was a typical homemaker of those times who stayed close to home and raised the children.  Loressa spent her final years with her son, Chester, in Coldwater, Michigan.
