Mary Thomas in the 1860 census is residing in the household of Hosea Thomas. It is not certain that it is the same Mary but since Hosea's wife does not appear in his household in 1860 it may be that his sister Mary was there to help.

The Vital Records of Lincolnville indicate the following between a Mary Thomas of Lincolnville and a Henry Snow of Hope: Page 361

The 1840 Federal Census for Lincolnville lists a Henry Snow family:1 male between 30 and 40, 1male under 5, 1 female under 5, 2 females between 5 and 10, 1 between 10 and 15, 1 female between 20 and 30

 The 1850 Federal Census for Lincolnville lists a Mary Snow family, no Henry: the names are not very readable but Mary is listed as 42, there are 5 children listed ages 21, 17, 15, 13, 11. The 15 year old Mary is the only readable name. The same census lists the following names(, as interpreted by the computer,) Chrdelia 20,  Amanda 17, Mary E. 15, Oscar J. 13 and Delera J 10.  The elder Mary as 42

The 1860 Federal Census for Lincolnville lists a Mary as widowed and 53.

The "History and Genealogy of Morrill, Maine" states that Prudence may be the daughter of Reuben Higgins and Betsey Bridges but it has not been proven.

New evidence suggests that she may be Prudence Blasland, daughter of Mary Bussey and William Swanton Blasland of Bath, Maine.  "The Bussey Family: New England Branch 1706 - 1986" by Joan Bussey Raia states that they had a daughter Prudence, born 1797, who married Benjamin Thomas and had the following children: William, John, Joseph, Sarah, Melzar, Orville, Mary, and Granville. The Massachusetts Vital Records list the death of a  Prudence Thomas, December 2, 1880, in Somerville, Massachusetts, Volume 320, Page 176, born in Bath, Maine.  Age unreadable but it looks to be in the 80's.

1860 Federal Census for Morrill, Me: Benjamin is still at home with parents and brother Granville.

Benjamin and Harriet married in 1872. It was the second marriage for both and they were both 37 at the time. The identity of Harriet's first husband is known but not the identity of Benjamin's first wife.   I checked the records twice and they clearly say that this was Benjamin's second marriage.

1880 census lists his wife as Harriet of Baden and nephew Austin Greer as living with them.  Austin Greer is the son of Alonson W. Greer and Benjamin' s sister Mary A. Thomas

Benjamin and his wife Hattie are still in Somerville in the 1900 census.

Benjamin is still in Somerville in the 1910 census but not in the 1920 census.

Benjamin died May 14, 1913 at 79y,1m, 28d in Somerville, MA.  He was living at 493 Somerville Ave. He was widowed at the time. He was born March 16, 1835 to Benjamin Thomas , of Lincolnville, and unknown mother. The informant was his brother Orville who was living in Togus, ME at the time.  He was buried May 17, 1913 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, MA

Harriet was 69y 3m 17d at death. She was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.  Informant was Benjamin Thomas

The various records give conflicting names for her parents:

Her marriage to William lists her father as Johann.

Her marriage to Benjamin list her parents as Jacob and Mary.

Her death lists them as William and Mary

They also list her name as Hanley and Hensley.

Harriet's first husband William W. Knights was in the 2nd Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery. I could not find a record of his death in MA between the 1860 and 1870 census.  This Union unit lost 4 enlisted men killed and 26 died by disease during their service. 

According to " The Soldiers and Sailors in the Civil War" Volume 5, Page 364,  William enlisted and was mustered on July 31, 1861. He was wounded April 8, 1864 at Sabine Cross Rds, LA.  He was mustered out August 16, 1864.

Don't know what happened to him after this as he doesn't show up in the 1870 census. Possibly he succumbed to battle wounds!

It is not clear where Caroline was born.  Her father resided in early life in Waldoboro and was part of the Waldoboro Light Infantry in 1810 and her mother was born in Waldoboro.  Her father moved to North Belmont around 1835.  It would appear then that she might have been born in Waldoboro but it can't be proven.

There is some confusion over to whom Lydia was married, Melzar or Benjamin Thomas. Page 200 of the "History and Genealogy of Morrill, Maine" book states that Lydia, wife of Benjamin Thomas, Jr. died in South Boston on August 23, 1870. Page 363 of the same book states she was the wife of Melzar Thomas and the same page states that she was the wife of Benjamin Thomas but that her gravestone says that she was the wife of Melzar.

The Vital Records of Massachusetts records the marriage of Lydia A. Knowlton in Boston 1851 Volume 56, Page 143

Line 2419 of the above records has Lydia and Melzar being married on November 20, 1851, both from Maine, Melzar 24, Lydia 23. This was the "FIRST MARRIAGE" for both.  Lists Melzar's parents as Benjamin, no parents listed for Lydia.

The 1860 Federal Census of Morrill, Maine has Benjamin living at home with his parents.  Lydia and Melzar were already married, 1851, and Lydia was 6-7 years older than Benjamin.

The 1870 Federal Census for East Boston has Melzar and Lydia together.

Her 1872 death certificate only lists her parents not her husband.  Common for the time.

The 1870 Federal Census for Somerville has Benjamin living in a  boarding house, no wife.  Benjamin marries for the second time, according to the marriage certificate, in 1872.  Who is his first wife?

Melzar marries for the second time, according to the marriage certificate, in 1874.

She was 84y, 11m, 26 d at death.  She was married and living at 35 Wadsworth Ave. in Waltham.  She died from traumatic burns suffered from a gas stove fire.  She was buried in Mt. Freake Cemetery in Waltham on May 26, 1925.

It appears from the census records that Catherine's mother came from England or Massachusetts and her father from Massachusetts or Connecticut.

John's age at death was 78y, 2m, 24d.  His mother was Prudence Blasland and she was born in Bath, ME. Informant was his wife.  He was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Everett.

John and Catherine are both buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Everett, MA, Evergreen Ave. Lot 104.  There is a photo of their gravesite on the Find A Grave website.  There Find A Grave memorial numbers are John - 70197449 and Catherine - 70197496.

Although most of  his children's marriage certificates on file in MA claim they were born in Belfast, ME there is no record of their birth in the Thomas birth listings in the Vital Records of Belfast, Me Births to 1892, pages 187 -188.

Notes for Catherine F. Sullivan:

The 1900 and 1910 Federal Census for Catherine Thomas indicated that she had 8 children and they were still alive in 1900 and 1910.

The death certificate states her father's name as only Sullivan, no first name, and no mother's name and that she was the wife of John B. Thomas.  She was buried December 21, 1916 in Glenwood Cemetery, Everett, MA.

This record is the first indication that I have found to date identifying Catherine's maiden name.  I later found the marriage records of her daughter Harriet F. Thomas and her son Granville L. Thomas which clearly lists their mother’s maiden name as Catherine Sullivan.

 It appears from the 1900 and 1910 census that Joseph and Louise had 3 children and they were still alive when each census was taken.  I was not able to initially locate any information on Annette or Mary in the Massachusetts Vital Records.  I later tracked down more info about Mary from cemetery records which disclosed her married name and I got further info on her family from that (children and grandchildren).

 Joseph was living at 462 Temple St, Whitman, MA at the time of his death.  He was 73y, 6m, 7d and married.  Date of birth was given as September 27, 1837.  Place of birth, ME. The informant was Mrs. Joseph Thomas. He was the son of Benjamin Thomas and Prudence Blasland of Maine. He was buried in Vine Hill Cemetery, Plymouth, MA on April 5, 1911.

At the time of its publication, " A History and Genealogy of Morrill, Maine" by Robinson, Morse, and White all that was known about Orville Thomas was that he married Ann Marie Whitcomb, in Belfast, and served in the Civil War.  Since then it has been discovered that he lived to be about 83 years old, Ann Marie lived to be 68y, 7m,17d, they had six girls, one of whom died before 1900, four who are known to have married and had children, and one unaccounted for.  The children were all born in Belfast, ME, but by 1880 the family was living in Boston, MA.  It was also discovered that Orville spent a number of years in Disabled Veteran's Hospitals in Togus, Maine and Chelsea, MA, while Ann Marie remained in Boston.

All of the six girls indicated above were born in Belfast, ME between 1862 and 1872.  Sometime after that the family moved to Boston, MA.  The writer does not know the correct spelling of Lettie or Lillie.

 Orville Thomas was in the 26th Regiment, Maine Infantry, 9 months, 1862-1863

 In the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Federal Census I could not find a record of Orville and Anna living together.

It appears that Orville spent a number of years in VA hospitals, at least 10 and possibly 30.  The Maine Adjutant General's Report for the Civil War lists Orville as being in the 26th Maine Regiment but does not mention any battle injury.

 Could not locate Annie M. Thomas in 1920 Census.

 The 1880, 1900, and 1910 census indicates that one of their girls had died between 1880 and 1900.  Since records exist for the marriages of Prudence, Eva R., Hattie M., and Grace L. it has to be either Cora or Letty (Lillie).  I could find no record of either death in the MA Vital Records.

I later discovered the marriage record for Cora, so that leaves Lillie (Lettie).

 At the time of his death Orville was residing in Charlestown, MA and died at the Chelsea Naval Hospital.

He was 83y, 9m, and 18d old.  He was widowed at the time but spouse was unknown to recorder.  He was born in Lincolnville, ME to Benjamin Thomas, of Lincolnville, and Prudence Blasland of Bath, ME. He was buried May 31, 1923 in Forestdale Cemetery, Malden, MA. , Section 37, Lot 43.  He is buried with his daughter Cora and her husband Edward Saunders.  A photo of the gravestone is on the Find A Grave website,  Their Find A Grave memorial numbers are Orville, 70255212, Cora, 79282443, Edward, 79282487,

 His wife Anna is buried by herself in Woodlawn Cemetery, grave # 2851

Her marriage is recorded in Gloucester but the exact date in October of 1884 is not legible.  It could be Oct 5 or Oct 8.  Unclear

The 1910 census list her and her husband, Edward Saunders, and 2 lodgers, her nieces Josephine A. Hunnewell and Helen Keith,  but no children,  The 1920 census list them with a 16 year old son, Clyde Saunders, and an 11 year old daughter, Meriel Saunders.  I can not find their birth records and can't verify that they are their children as they have not been in other census and in fact the 1910 census claims that they had no children.  Further investigation needs to be done to determine who these children are.  They be their biological children or they may be adopted.

Cora and Edward are buried in Forestdale Cemetery in Malden, MA in Section 37, Lot 43.  A photo of there gravestone can be viewed on the Find A Grave website.  Their Memorial numbers are Edward, 79282487; Cora, 79282443.  Cora's father Orville is also buried there.

 Age at death 49y, 2m, 22d.  Died from a perforated ulcer.  Informant was his wife. They lived at 1 Phipps St.

He was buried in Forest Hills on November 2, 1930.

Claude was 38 and Grace was 35 at time of marriage.  Both were living at 805 Washington St.  It was the 2nd marriage for both.  He was divorced and she was widowed.

He is referred to as Claude in his marriage certificate but as William Claude on his birth certificate.

His mother is called Alice on his birth certificate but Almanda on his marriage record.

The "History and Genealogy of Morrill Maine " lists Harry Levant Wing's place of death as Saugus, MA. In fact he died in Lynn, MA but was living in Saugus, MA at the time.  He was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Saugus, MA.  Information was obtained from his death certificate.  Refer to endnotes.

The "History and Genealogy of Morrill, Maine " states that his first two children were born in Jackson, ME and the last seven in Saugus, MA.  In fact: George and Malcolm were born in Jackson, ME; Valesca was born in Somerville, MA; Barbara was born in Boston, MA; Bernice and Hester were born in Saugus, MA; Harry, Rosemary, and Guy were born in Lynn, MA.  The entire family did live in Saugus for a number of years, probably from at least 1923 to at least 1938 and in MA much longer.  The birth documentation referenced in the endnotes verifies the birth locations.  All remained in MA with the exception of Rosemary who moved away and died young, Harry, Jr. who moved away but returned and Guy who was in the Army but returned.
