OBITUARY OF CAPT. JAMES M. MILLER

Belfast] Maine 'Republican Journal' Waldo County, Maine Thursday, 25 August 1887:

FOUND DEAD IN BED. Capt. James M. Miller, of this city, was found dead in his bed Friday morning at Venness House, Boston. The Boston Herald of Friday has the following particulars

Early yesterday morning a man apparently about 70 years old, with a gray beard, and dressed in blue pants and a cutaway coat and vest, entered the saloon of the Venness House, corner of Pleasant and Elliot streets, told the attendant that he was not feeling well and wanted a place to line down.  He called for a glass of beer, and, taking one or two swallows, set the glass down and said he would go to his room.  He was shown to it and nothing more was thought about it.  About 5 o'clock last evening the man who was in charge in the morning having returned to duty, inquired about the man and learned he had not been seen.  His room was at once visited, and he was found dead in his bed.  Medical Examiner Stedman, who was called, pronounced death the result of natural causes, and the body was delivered to Undertaker Jones.  The man was evidently a seafaring man, and from papers found upon his person, he is supposed to be James M. Miller of Belfast, Me.  He had in his pocket a card of introduction to John H.
Buckley, shipping agent, No. 248 Commercial street, and who lives at No. 18, Dwight street.  A visit to Mr. Buckley's residence in hopes of finding out something about the deceased, but no one was home.  Captain Miller was an old-time shipmaster of Belfast, Maine and will be remembered by our older citizens.  For the past twenty years he has been on the Pacific coast and only returned home one year ago, making his home with Mr. Daniel Wadlin, being a brother of Mrs. Wadlin.  Captain Miller commanded many Belfast and Boston vessels and was a successful shipmaster.  He was also a veteran of the United States Navy, and his business in Boston was in connection with a pension matter.  He left Belfast the 17th, and the next his friends heard of him was his death in the Boston papers.  Mr. George Miller, employed in the store of A. A. Howes & Co., is his son.  The remains were sent home for burial.  He was about 65 years of age.

In 'The Belfast City Press,' issue of Tuesday, 23 August 1887 [in the "Died" listing]:

In Boston, Aug. 18, Capt. James M. Miller, of Belfast, aged 63 years, 11 months.
Same issue:
SUDDEN DEATH.--Capt. James M. Miller, of this city, died suddenly at Boston Thursday afternoon.  He was stopping at the Venness House, corner of Pleasant and Elliot streets, and retired to his room in the forenoon, complaining of not feeling well.  About 5 o'clock P. M. his room was visited and he was found to be dead.  The Medical Examiner pronounced death the result of natural causes.  Capt. Miller has been one of our leading ship masters, and has also served in the navy.  Among the vessels he commanded were the clipper brig Russia, carrying California emigrants to Nicaragua, and the ship Troy, in which he sailed to Mediterranean and Baltic ports during the Crimean war.  For some time past he has been in failing health.  He leaves a wife and two sons.

Ella (Rivers) Churchill

I had a mystery to solve awhile back regarding my great grandmother's sister Ella (Rivers) Churchill. You may have read about it in a previous posting to the Waldo County Rootsweb site.

I had been told by my grandfather (Fred Royce Miller Sr.) that his Aunt Ella had died at a fairly young age due to the complications of childbirth. He told me that she was buried in the Pease Cemetery in Belmont, Waldo County, Maine.

Melrose Free Press  June 23, 1902

Died very suddenly together with the little one born to her, despite the efforts of three physicians to save her life , Mrs. Ella G. Churchill , wife of Fred T. Churchill died at their home on 435 Main Street . Mrs. Churchill was 34 years old and moved to Melrose from Belmont , Waldo Co. Maine , about 5 years ago, and had since been associated with her husband in the undertaking business , being the only lady embalmer in this vicinity . She was a woman whose personality made her presence in the house of mourning most sympathetic and comforting , and many friends extend their sympathies now in turn to her husband and little daughter of ten years , thus bereft of wife and mother .

Her funeral services were held at the First Congregational Church on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 and were attended by delegations from the Golden Rule Lodge , Daughters of Rebekah , and Lincoln Lodge of Odd Ladies , to both of which Mrs. Churchill belonged . Mr. Howard of the firm of the Lockwood Casket Co. and several prominent undertakers were present . Rev. Dr. Simms offered words of consolation and a quartette consisting of E.W. Owen , E.T. Clark ,F.B. Almy and Miss Grace Burnap sang " Still with Thee " " The Homeland " and " My Heavenly Home " . The Mother with the little babe in her arms , rested in an elegant open casket embowered with floral offerings. The pall bearers were A.S. Walton , representing Undertakers Association and Knights of Malta , F.W. Stantial , D.K. Collamore and Alan S. Sim , representing Melrose , I.O. of O.F. and Golden Rule Lodge. Interment at Belmont , Maine . - Melrose Free Press

Ella G. Churchill and infant son died in Melrose , Mass June 23 , at the age of 34 years . She was a daughter of Joshua and Susan (Andrews) Laughton Rivers of Searsmont and wife of Fred T . She leaves to mourn their loss ,her husband , one daughter Lena May , her parents , and two sisters Mrs. Abigail "Abbie" (Rivers) Ordway and Mrs. Lillian "Lilla" (Rivers) Miller , both of Searsmont . She was a member of the Odd Ladies and the Rebekah's, which orders paticipated in the funeral services in the Congregational Church in Melrose, Massachusetts . Andrews , Misses Della Lassell and Jennie E. McFarland , Searsmont .

Ella is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Searsmont, Waldo Co., Maine with her infant child and her parents.

I HAD A PICTURE OF HER GRAVESTONE AT THE PEASE CEMETERY IN BELMONT, MAINE AND A PICTURE OF HER GRAVESTONE IN THE OAK GROVE CEMETERY IN SEARSMONT,WALDO COUNTY, MAINE. SO WHERE WAS SHE AND WHY WERE THERE TWO GRAVESTONES WITH HER NAME AND DATES OF BIRTH AND DEATH.

THANKS TO ISABEL MARESH THIS IS THE REST OF THE STORY:

E-mail from Isabel Maresh: I found a State of Maine Burial Permit, which I found very interesting on a loose piece of paper in the old Belmont, Maine death records. It is dated, Belmont, Me., July 29, 1925 and reads viz: "Permission is hereby given Abbie Bryant to remove the remains of Ella G. Churchill from South Belmont Cemetery to Grove Cemetery, Searsmont for burial." That's all there is to it, and quite lucky that the permit was saved, as much of the old records in Belmont are gone. To be truthful, I didn't think that we'd ever locate anything that would give any details as to her being moved. Hope this helps. Isabel Morse Maresh

Abigail "Abbie" (Rivers) Ordway Bryant was a sister of Eleanor "Ella" (Rivers) Churchill. They also had another sister Lillian "Lilla" (Rivers) Miller and a step sister Nora M. Laughton m John Torrey Rivers.

She is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Searmont, Waldo Co, Maine in the same lot as her parents Susan (Andrews) Laughton Rivers b 08 January 1839- died 22 April 1909 and her husband Joshua Rivers b 23 March 1841 -died 03 May 1917.
