Daniel H. Ballou 1999-05-05 Daniel H. Ballou, 69, of Wilmington, Mass., and a summer resident of York, Me., died April 22, 1999, at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Mr. Ballou was born in Boston, the son of Catherine (Veltman) Ballou of Wilmington, Mass., and the late Charles L. Ballou, Sr. He had lived in Cambridge during his youth and graduated from Cambridge Ringe & Latin High School. He joined the Wilmington Police Department in 1960 and retired in 1989 as a police detective, a position that he held for many years. Mr. Ballou enjoyed sailing in York Harbor and was a vessel examiner for the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla #33. Mr. Ballou also enjoyed painting, particularly watercolor seascapes of York's coastline. Besides his mother, Mr. Ballou is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine (Rockwood) Ballou; his children Daniel H. Ballou, Jr. and his wife, Dawn, of Reading, Mass., Robert J. Ballou and his wife, Diane, of Dana Point, Calif., Karen Ballou Knowles and her husband, Stephen, of Bolingbrook, Ill., David J. Ballou, Esq. and his wife, Kathryn, of York, and Richard J. Ballou and his wife, Susan, both of Charlotte, N.C.; his sisters and brothers Barbara Schbilhute of Derry, N.H., Loretta Westerhof of South Dennis, Mass., Charles L. Ballou, Jr. of Wilmington, Mass., Paul Ballou and William Ballou both of Andover, Mass., Catherine Stanewicz of Montrose, N.Y., and Martha Baldwin of Ashfield, Mass.; 14 beloved grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews. His funeral was held at the W.S. Cavanaugh & Son Funeral Home, Wilmington, Mass., on April 26, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Thomas Church. Bliss, 95, of the Alternative Home, Kittery, Me., formerly of York, Me., died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at her residence. She was born on Jan. 21, 1904, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of Timothy H. and Nellie (Farmer) Casey, and was a 1922 graduate of Somerville High School. Mrs. Bliss had resided in Arlington, Mass., for many years where she had been a secretary for her husband's business, Bayburn Cleaners. She moved to York over 40 years ago and had resided on Nubble Road and Georgia Street. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit. She was a past president of the Conta Club of Arlington and was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence P. Bliss, who died in 1984. Survivors include three nieces, Marion Donnelly of Portsmouth, N.H., Eleanor Tamulaitis of Sandown, N.H., and Barbara Moreau of Stoneham, Mass.; and one nephew, Norman York of Freedom, N.H. Cummings 1999-09-29 Martha Ann Cummings, 64, of Bromo Road, Berwick, Me., died unexpectedly Sunday morning, Sept. 26, 1999, at her residence. She was born on Nov. 23, 1934, in York, the daughter of the late Stuart and Ardell (Brooks) Chase. She attended York schools and married and raised her children in York Beach. She lived in York Beach for over 50 years before retiring to Berwick 10 years ago. Mrs. Cummings enjoyed sewing and cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Randall J. Cummings of Berwick; two daughters, Sharon L. Chase of New London, N.H., and Susan Patch of South Berwick; one son, Gary A. Cummings of York Beach; four brothers, Norman and Herman Chase, both of York, Richard Chase of South Berwick and Chester Chase of Cape Neddick; one sister, Sylvia Hathorne of York Beach; four grandchildren and 23 nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held. Althine B. Watson 1999-11-10 Althine B. Watson, 92, of Ocean Street, Ogunquit, Me., died Tuesday morning, Nov. 2, 1999, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery after a brief illness. Mrs. Watson was born June 14, 1907, in Bath, a daughter of Leonard M. and Grace Small Munsey, and is a 1925 graduate of Morse High School, and Gorham Normal School, Class of 1927. A longtime teacher, Mrs. Watson began her teaching career in 1917 at the Wells Division 4 School in Moody, teaching grades 1-8. After three years she moved to the Ogunquit Village School where she taught grades 1 and 2 and was principal until 1940. She then served as a substitute teacher in Wells, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, York and North Berwick. In 1950, she accepted a position as a sixth-grade teacher in York for four years. She then remarried and moved to Kennebunk and served as clerk for her husband, who owned and ran the Kennebunk Star newspaper. In 1958 she taught a seventh-grade class of 41 students who had driven out seven teachers in the last 12 weeks of class. In the fall of 1958 she was elected to be the English department teacher of the Wells Junior High. She retired from teaching in 1972 after 37 years. During the summers, Mrs. Watson worked as a waitress at the Poland Springs and the Ogunquit Lookout Motel, clerked in the Ogunquit post office, and was a bookkeeper for the Ogunquit Pharmacy and Maxwell's Store. An active community volunteer, she served the town of Ogunquit as its town clerk for 10 years, the budget committee for 10 years, and was chair of the Wells 300th Anniversary publicity committee and budget committee. She also volunteered with F.I.S.H., and VITA, formed a Campfire and Girl Scout troop, and served as president of the Wells-Ogunquit PTA, bringing driver education into the school during her tenure. Mrs. Watson served as a reporter for the Portland Press Herald, Portland Sunday Telegram, The Biddeford Journal, The Portsmouth Herald, The York Weekly, and the York County Coast Star from 1927 to 1998. She was a 66-year active member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and the Ladies Aid, served as president of the York Audubon Club, and was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association., AARP, Ogunquit Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Camp Waban, Laudholm Farm, Kennebunk Animal Shelter, Ogunquit Women's Club, Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, Ogunquit Rotary Club and the Ogunquit Art Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Willis Watson, who died in 1963. Survivors include her son, Leonard W. Wyman of Ogunquit; two stepsons, David Watson of Aurora, Colo., and Hubert Watson of Saco; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Pillsbury of Kennebunk. Visiting hours will be 4-7pm Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, where a funeral service will be held at 10am Saturday with Rev. David Clark officiating. Box 525, Ogunquit 03907 in Mrs. Watson's memory. Eleanor Thurston KENNEBUNK - Eleanor Agnes Thurston, 85, formerly of Portland, died Sunday at Kennebunk Nursing Home. She was born March 2, 1912, in Portland, a daughter of James W. and Arline Perrin Robertson, attended South Portland schools, graduated in 1936 from South Portland High School and in 1938 from St. Barnabas Hospital School with a nursing degree. In 1940 she married George Thurston. In the late 1930s and early 1940s Mrs. Thurston was a private duty nurse in several area nursing homes and also worked at the Osteopathic Hospital. From 1969 to 1980 she was employed in the Deering High School cafeteria. She was a member of the Stevens Avenue Congregational Church, Cumberland-York Senior Citizen Council, St. Barnabas Hospital Alumni, and was active in the Girls Scouts, Rebekahs and the Salvation Army. She enjoyed camping, and knitting sweaters and mittens for the church. She was a loving and caring person who enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, according to family members. She was predeceased by her husband, in 1984, and a daughter, Patricia Locke, in 1981. Survivors include a son, Philip Sr. of Belfast; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Posted Monday, January 19, 1998 Hazel Pillsbury LIMINGTON - Hazel A. Selby Pillsbury, 80, of Limington, died Sunday at Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association, Brookline, Mass. She was born June 6, 1917, in Port Norfolk, Va., a daughter of Oliver and Natalie Wyckoff Selby, and grew up in the Stamford, Conn., area where she met and married James C. Pillsbury. According to family members, her life was filled with happiness and love, and she will be remembered for her selfless dedication to her family and community. After many years in Brewer, where she was the personal secretary to two Bangor city managers, Mrs. Pillsbury retired to Limington in 1977. She was an active member of the Limington Historical Society and the Thursday Club and served on the Limington Library Board. She was also active in the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Portland and Boston, serving in many capacities, most recently on the lecture committee, in the Christian Science Reading Room and ushering for church services. She was a former first reader and board member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Bangor. She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years. Pierce, 88, of Willow Street and formerly of Pawtucket, R.I., and Seekonk, Mass., died Sunday at H.D. Goodall Hospital. She was born Oct. 11, 1909, in Pawtucket, a daughter of Walter J. and Julia Sheldon Conary, and was a descendant of John Sheldon, who settled in the Providence area around 1650. She graduated in 1928 from Pawtucket High School. For 12 years Mrs. Pierce was employed as a clerk by New England Telephone Co. in Providence, where she was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church. She was active in World Wide Guild, an assistant in the Sunday school, an assistant teacher in the Infant Department and the children's organist. In Seekonk she belonged to Memorial Baptist Church and its Women's Fellowship and in Maine she was a member of the Pleasant Street Free Baptist Church in Springvale. Prosser, 101, a retired Navy captain and Springvale resident, died Saturday at H.D. Goodall Hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1896, in Fitchburg, Mass., the son of Albert West and Jeanette Kearny Prosser, graduated in 1914 from Lisbon Falls High School and in 1918 from Bowdoin College, Brunswick. Mr. Prosser enlisted in the Navy and graduated in 1919 from Officers Materiel School at Harvard University. He served with the Navy in the Adriatic during World War I and in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1943 he was promoted to captain. He retired from the Navy in 1947. In 1925 he married his wife of 73 years, Marion Williams, after a two-year submarine tour in the Philippines. Since retiring to Springvale he was active in numerous civic affairs including as a charter trustee of the Sanford Sewerage District, as the first chairman of the Sanford Planning Board in 1953, as an associate member of the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1954 to 1965 and since 1956 as a member and former chairman of the Sanford Historical Committee. Since 1947 Mr. Prosser had been a member of the North Parish Congregational Church, where he served as clerk, moderator, historian and chairman of several building committees. He compiled and published a church history in 1961. He was a former trustee of Acton Congregational Church, former director of the Sanford Library Association, former member and past president of the Sanford-Springvale Rotary Club, former member and director of the Sanford-Alfred Historical Society and a former president of the Wakefield-Brookfield HistoricalSociety in New Hampshire. From 1948 to 1956 he was a trustee at Nasson College and wrote a history of the school. He helped organize the Bowdoin Club of York County, served as president of the Portland Society of Natural History from 1960 to 1965, as president of the Maine Audubon Society from 1961 to 1965 and co-authored the book "Enjoying Maine Birds." An ardent stamp collector, Mr. Prosser was an honorary member of the Maine Philatelic Society. According to survivors he endeared himself to many of Sanford and Springvale's children and was fondly known as Grampa by them. His neighbor of 40 years, Mrs. Hanson, said, "As a friend and neighbor, he was always ready to give of himself and his love." Pitts, 82, of Route 25, died Saturday at Springbrook Nursing Care Facility, Westbrook. He was born Dec. 27, 1915, in Limington, a son of Henry W. and Ethna Moody Pitts. He attended Limington schools and graduated in 1933 from Limington Academy, where he was an outstanding basketball player according to his family. After high school Mr. Pitts was a truck driver with Pulsifer Brothers, and alsodrove for Meserves Express and Sanborn Express, retiring in 1977. After retiring from Sanborn he was employed by Churchill Motors in Kezar Falls and Cumberland Cold Storage Co. in Cornish. He was a member of the truck drivers' Teamsters Union. As a young man his interests included hunting and motorcycle riding, and he owned Harley and Indian motorcycles. He enjoyed the outdoors, snowshoeing, gardening, playing the guitar and harmonica, and traveling with his wife, ArleneWhitehouse Pitts, particularly to Bar Harbor and Vermont. His wife died in 1994. For many years Mrs. Guay was employed as a bookkeeper at West Point Pepperell and then with Fisher James, retiring two years ago. Her primary interests were her family and home. For more than 20 years Mrs. Haley was employed as a twister at the Limerick Textile Mill, then worked 25 years at the Wright's and Westbrook spinning mills in Westbrook. From 1966 until retiring in 1976, she was employed by Sprague Electric in Sanford. Throughout her life, and together with her husband, she enjoyed fishing and camping, especially in the Rangeley Lakes area. She also enjoyed flowers and always had a great sense of humor. Posted Thursday, January 22, 1998 Joseph Ruest Jr. KENNEBUNK - Joseph A. Ruest Jr., 77, of Sea Road, died Tuesday at Kennebunk Nursing Center. He was born Jan. 28, 1920, in Salem, Mass., a son of Joseph A. Sr. and Mary Devine Ruest. When he was an infant his mother died and he was raised by her friends, Frederic and Lydia Rivard of Salem. He graduated in 1937 from Salem High School. During World War II he served in the Marine Corps and was wounded in action. In 1951 Mr. Ruest moved to Maine and was employed for 34 years by pharmaceutical companies, including McNeil Laboratories and Johnson & Johnson. He received many sales awards, became an executive professional and after retiring in 1985 continued in the pharmaceutical field as a consultant. He enjoyed sports, including tennis and skiing, and especially golf. He was a member of the Webhannet Golf Club at Kennebunk Beach, where he served on many committees, and won several tournaments, including the New England, Maine State and Southern Maine seniors, and had been working on a tournament to benefit the Maine Center for the Visually Impaired. He enjoyed making his own golf clubs and experimenting with them, and painting, especially in watercolors. Mr. Ruest was an active member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club, a past club president and a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. In the 1960s he served as a Planning Board member and belonged to the late Hartley Lord's Marching and Chowder Society. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Natalie H. Porell, 55, of Amherst, N.H., died Monday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was born Aug. 4, 1942, in Sanford, a son of Roland and Geraldine Dunham Porell. He was educated in Maine schools, graduated in 1963 from Franklin Institute in Boston, and in 1966 from Boston University School of Engineering. For the past 26 years he lived in Amherst. On Jan. 21, 1967, he married Carol A. Creaser, and they would have celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary Wednesday. For 20 years Mr. Porell was employed at Sanders-Lockheed Martin Company as a principal industrial engineer. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing. He was predeceased by a son, Stephen D. Posted Friday, January 23, 1998 Muriel Desrosiers BIDDEFORD - Muriel R. Desrosiers, 82, of Sullivan Street, died at home Thursday. She was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Biddeford, a daughter of J. Wilfred and Delia Binette Lepine, and was educated at St. Andre's School. In the mid-1930s Mrs. Desrosiers founded Muriel's Band and directed it for 40 years. For several years she was also the organist at St. Andre's Church. She was a member of the Biddeford Senior Citizens Club and performed with the Biddeford Senior Citizens Rockettes. He was born Dec. 28, 1953, in Elmira, N.Y., a son of John and Verna Whitmore Tetz. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy, Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y., earned his physician's assistant degree from George Washington University Medical Center, Washington, D.C., and post-graduate surgical degree from Norwalk Hospital and Yale University in Connecticut. In 1986 he moved to Kennebunkport with his family and graduated in 1990 from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford. He did his residency training at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, Worcester, Mass. A board-certified emergency physician, Dr. Tetz was employed by the University of Massachusetts Medical Center as a LifeFlight emergency physician and as assistant medical director of LifeFlight for several years. He worked as an emergency room physician for the Medical Center, Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire, Brighton Medical Center, Maine Medical Center, York Hospital and H.D. Goodall Hospital. Dr. Tetz was a member of the Federal Emergency Medical Assistance Team, a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts for emergency residences and a fellow with the American College of Emergency Physicians. A graduate of Banford Academy of Hair Design in Malden, Mass., she had lived in Laconia since 1955. She was a secretary at Laconia’s Memorial Middle/Junior School for 17 years and also been a real estate agent. Mrs. Frost was a teddy bear artist and collector and appeared on a local television station demonstrating her artistry. Following the war, he was a self-employed truck driver, delivering lumber throughout New England. He worked for Pepperell Mfg. Co. in Biddeford for several years and in 1968, along with his family, moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where he worked with Bell Hellicopter Co. He was a foreman with MESCO Building Products Co., fabricating metal structures and products in Grapevine, Texas for more than 17 years. In 1995, after retirement, he moved back to Maine. He was born July 19, 1909 in Dublin, Ireland, a son of Alexander and Jane Armstrong Morrison and was a graduate of Mountjoy School, Dublin. He came to America as a young man and was a mechanical engineering graduate of New Jersey Institute of Technology. Mr. Morrison was employed by the Oscar Vogelbach Company of Newark, N.J., where he was active in the construction of Bayonne Naval Air Base. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and served aboard the Frelinghyson and the Chester Valley, running war materials into Murmansk, Russia, for which he was awarded a bronze medal by the former Soviet Union in 1991. Following his wartime service, he was a founding partner of Morrison, Zimmer, Borton and O’Connor of Union, N.J, a consulting and engineering firm, working primarily throughout New Jersey and New York. Mr. Morrison was a licensed professional engineer in Maine, N.Y., N.J. and Vermont, and was president of the Union County Chapter of the Professional Engineering Society and an active member of ASHRAE. He was secretary and president of the Robert Burns Society of the City of New York; a member of the St. Andrews Societies of Maine and New York, and a member of the America Merchant Marines veterans organization, New England Chapter. After retirement, he moved to Wells, where he served as a director of the Wells Public Library, member of the Wells Planning Board and was a charter member of the Ogunquit Rotary Club. He was born Oct. 20, 1926 in Jefferson, Md., a son of Cecil K. and Elsie Remsberg Holter Sr., was a 1943 graduate of Middletown High School and received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Maryland. Dr. Holter was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Europe during the Korean War. After the war, he attended Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he received his master’s and doctoral degrees in animal nutrition. He was formerly a faculty member at Beaver Country Day School, Brookline, Mass. Upon moving to Maine, he became a member of the development committee for the new division of Nasson College in Springvale. After his career in education, Dr. Holter became an active partner in Holter-Roberts Antiques, Wells, and later Maine-Le Crafts, Boothbay Harbor. At the time of his death, his business had spread throughout the New England states. His interests included music, antiques, art, drama and farming. Dr. Holter had an extensive knowledge of purebred cattle, and most recently he held a partnership in a Sanford farm, where he enjoyed spending as much time as possible, survivors say. William A. Mrs. White was employed at New England Telephone Co., in Quincy, Mass. for 32 years, retiring in 1974. She had lived in Wells for the past 17 years. He was born April 28, 1916 in Lewiston, a son of Timothy J. and Mary Harkins Murphy, graduated from Lewiston High School and attended Bliss College there. Mr. Murphy was employed with Pepperell Manufacturing, then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During World War II, he served in the 268th Army Air Force Base Unit. He returned to Pepperell after the war and continued his career in New York, Massachusetts and Maine as a production manager, retiring after 44 years with the company. Mr. Murphy loved golf, family members say, and was assistant treasurer at the Cape Arundel Golf Club for many years. He was a communicant ot St. Martha’s Church. At age 16, Mrs. MacDonald moved to the greater Boston area, where she was employed as a cook and housekeeper in several private homes. He was born Sept. 6, 1913, in Providence, R.I., a son of Ernest A. and Ivy (Pickles) Metcalfe, and was a graduate of Sanford High School. Mr. Metcalfe was a former resident of Cape Neddick and had been a summer resident of Moody Point since 1981. Mr. Metcalfe was employed as a loom fixer and weaver for the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mill until it closed in 1954. He was then employed in woolen mills in Winchester, Va., and Kezar Falls for many years. He purchased and operated a motel in Cape Neddick for 12 years, and was a rural mail carrier there, retiring in 1972. Mr. Metcalfe was a member of the Sanford Elks Lodge. He had lived in Pompano Beach since 1981. Ethel Bodwell of Pompano Beach was his companion for many years. He was predeceased by his wife, Hilda Paul Metcalfe, in 1981. He was born Jan. 1, 1940 in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of Paul and Freda Holschuh Gress, and was a graduate of West High School in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University, where he was active in the ROTC, and earned his M.B.A. from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. During that time he met and married his wife of 34 years, Victoria Roberts. Mr. Gress was employed as a salesman for the Xerox Corporation in Columbus and Newark, Ohio and Washington, D.C. before being transferred to Maine. The Gress family has been residents of Kennebunk for 26 years. He coached Little League softball, led the Christ Church youth group for eight years, was president of the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport Athletic Boosters and was a member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, was chairman of the Board of Trustees for South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport, was president of the York County Board of Realtors and was active in the Maine Association of Realtors. Mr. Gress workd as a real estate broker with Coldwell Banker, Harnden Beecher in Lower Village and a regional director for Excel Communications Corp. In 1998, he joined Coldwell Banker’s Diamond Society and survivors say he was regarded as a trustworthy and well-respected member of southern Maine’s real estate community. His interests included friends, travel and outdoor activities, but his family came first, and survivors say he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was born Jan. 14, 1912 in Millville, N.J., a son of David and Arabella Cassaboon Surran, and was educated in Millville schools. Mr. Surran enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 1929 and served on submarines during World War II and the Kirean Conflict. He served as instructor in Philadelphia, Pa.; Hampson Roads, Va.; the Naval Shipyard in Boston; submarine school in New London, Conn.; Engineman School in Great Lakes, Ill. and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He served on the USS Detroit, Omaha, Henderson, Pope, Paul Jones, Canopus, Lea, McLeish, Herring, Threadfin, Grampus, Sea Lion, Seal and Cutlass. Mr. Surran retired from the Navy after 29 years and was employed by Electric Boat/General Dynamics for 12 years, where he was a member of the team that built the first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus. Mr. Surran retired in 1970 and lived in Hull, moving to Biddeford in 1996. He was a member of the Elks, Oddfellows and V.F.W. He was predeceased by his first wife, Constance Walker Surran, in 1962 and his second wife, Melvina V. Langlois Surran, in 1995. She was born May 19, 1901 in Windsor Mills, Quebec, Canada, a daughter of Johnnie and Elise Bergeron Pothier, moved to Sanford at a young age and was educated there. In 1933 she married Oscar Rochon in Montreal, Quebec. Mrs. Rochon was employed at local textile mills for many years, retiring in the early 1970s. She was a member of the Ross Center Senior Citizens Club and had been a volunteer for its lunch program. She enjoyed baseball and had followed Red Sox games for many years. Posted Monday, May 3, 1999 John Brown WELLS - John P. Brown, 84, of Littlefield Road, died Monday at Maine Stay Nursing Home in Sanford. He was born Nov. 17, 1914 in Bangor, a son of Charles Ernest and Mabel Louise Gott Brown, and attended Wells schools. A lifelong Wells resident, he married Lida Phillips Brown in 1933. Known locally as a hard worker since the age of 7, he was employed as a janitor at the Division 3 School on Eldridge Road, delivered ice, vegetables and wood and was a winter herdsman for Beach Farms and Shady Nook Farm, and raised Hereford cattle on his own farm. He also plowed roads during the winter and operated his own cement contracting business for many years. During World War II, he served as an air raid warden. He was a member of the Wells Beach Hose Company and the Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society and enjoyed bird hunting. Two brothers, Harry and Charles, and a sister, Eleanor Wildes, have passed away. Mrs. Cloutier was a communciant of Notre Dame Church in Springvale. She enjoyed playing bingo, listening to music, singing and dancing. She had a great love for children, survivors say, and was known as the neighborhood babysitter. Posted Tuesday, October 5, 1999 Dr. Jerry Rountree EAST WATERBORO — Dr. Jerry Rountree, D.V.M., 70, of Litchfield and East Waterboro, died Wednesday at Goodall Hospital, Sanford. He was born March 6, 1920 in Ferndale, Mich., a son of Leon and Mary C. Rountree. He attended Romeo (Mich.) High School and received his veterinary degree from Michigan State University in 1952, and his advanced degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1958. From 1952 to 1955 Dr. Rountree was an associate professor at the University of Maine, Orono. In 1958 he became vice president in charge of research for Lipman Poultry Co. of Augusta. From 1978 to 1994 he was a private consultant for the poultry industry, working for various poultry companies around the world. Family members say his career was dedicated to health and management of the poultry industry, stressing immunology. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Avian Pathologists and the Maine Veterinary Medical Association. As well, he was a past member of the Litchfield Lions Club. Posted Friday, November 5, 1999 Dr. Henry Landers ALFRED — Dr. Henry P. Landers, 95, of Hazel Dell died Thursday at Goodall Hospital, Sanford. He was born Oct. 19, 1904 in Bar Harbor, a son of Thomas and Julia Landers, and was a graduate of Rhode Island College of Podiatry and Temple University College of Podiatry. Dr. Landers practiced podiatry in Sanford for 35 years, retiring in 1978 due to ill health. He was a director of Sanford Community Health Association, and conducted clinics in the Sanford, Springvale and Shapleigh school systems. Dr. Landers held a particular interest in the High Pine Health Camp for Children. He was a communicant of Notre Dame Church in Sanford. Dr. Landers was past president of the Maine Podiatry Association; past president of the Sanford Lions Club; and was a member of the American Red Cross and Boy Scouts of America for many years. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Mary Hughes Landers, in 1994. He was born in North Woodstock, N.H., on Dec. 10, 1945, a son of Edward and Gertrude Sears Conroy, and moved to Maine with his family at an early age. He attended Saco schools asnd was a 1963 honor graduate of Thornton Academy. After attending Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Mr. Conroy was employed for several years by Biddeford public schools teaching Latin and English. In 1969 he moved to San Francisco and was employed by Dean Witter Reynolds and Charles Schwab & Co. brokerage firms. In 1984 he returned to Maine and prior to his death was employed by Horton's Smoked Fish Co. in the Portland Public Market, where he was well known for his cheese-making skills. Mr. Conroy was a loyal baseball enthusiast and an avid cyclist. Kristen Horton of Bar Mills was his longtime companion. "Bill" Studley, 90, of School Street died Thursday evening at Southern Maine Medical Center after a brief illness. Mr. Studley was born June 26, 1909, in Wells, the son of Frederick and Annie (Burgess) Studley, and attended Wells schools. He was employed as a custodian at the Wildes District School. During the 1930s, he and his wife operated a fried food stand at Wells Beach. He was a 25-year employee of General Electric in Somersworth, where he assembled meters. Mr. Studley also lobstered out of Kennebunkport. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, manning the watch tower on Ocean Avenue, Kennebunkport. He was an active member of the community, serving as a member of the Village Fire Company and as a member and past master of Arundel Lodge #76 Lodge of Masons. He was a life member of Aurora Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and enjoyed playing cribbage at the Senior Center at Lower Village. Mr. Studley was well-known for his garden and for the vegetables he sold in his front yard. He was predeceased by his wife, Lois Hutchins Studley, who died in 1996, and a brother, Warren Studley. Posted Monday, November 8, 1999 Foster Quint NORTH BERWICK — Foster C. Quint, 92, formerly of Bauneg Beg Hill, died Saturday at Goodall Hospital. He was born Aug. 15, 1907 in North Berwick, a son of Bernard V. and Ellen (Chadbourne) Quint, and had been a lifelong resident until moving to his son's home in Cape Porpoise for years ago. Mr. Quint was educated in a one room schoolhouse in North Berwick through the ninth grade. He was employed at the former Goodall Sanford textile mills in the shipping department and as an expediter in the production department from 1928 to 1955, when the mills closed. He worked from 1955 to 1957 at the former North Star Woolen Mill and at the former Alloy Products from 1957 to 1960. He worked as a press operator at Hussey Manufacturing in North Berwick from 1960 until his 1974 retirement. Mr. Quint was a former member and chancellor of Riverside Lodge, Knights of Pythias. He was a former member of the Sanford-Springvale Fish and Game Protective Association, was an avid hunter, and was a member of the Big Buck Club of Maine. He was a 70-plus year member and past master of Bauneg Beg Grange, North Berwick, and a member of York Pomona, state and national granges. He was a member of Yorkshire Lodge, AF & AM in North Berwick for more than 40 years, and was a member of the White Rose Chapter, Royal Arch Masons of Sanford. Mr. Quint was predeceased by his wife, Jessie George Quint in 1991. Posted Monday, November 8, 1999 Cecile Levasseur BIDDEFORD— Former resident Cecile M. Levasseur, 76, died Sunday at Ste. Marguerite d'Youville Pavilion, Lewiston, where she had lived for the past two months. She was born in Biddeford May 10, 1923, a daughter of Pierre and Beatrice Lavigne Leclerc, was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School, and St. Mary's School of Nursing, Lewiston. On June 12, 1948 she married Roland A. Levasseur June 12, 1948. He died May 18, 1996. Mrs. Levasseur was employed by the City of Lewiston as Health Nurse Officer for 27 years, prior to her retirement in 1986. She was a member of St. Mary's Parish, Lewiston, where she was a volunteer, and also volunteered at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center. Family members say Mrs. Levasseur loved to entertain at her Taylor Pond summer residence and to knit for her friends and relatives. Posted Monday, November 8, 1999 Toni Ladakakos SACO — Toni Ladakakos, 81, of Oceanside Drive died Sunday at Southridge Living and Rehabilitation Center after an illness with cancer. She was born Dec. 16, 1917 in Rollinsford, N.H., a daughter of Greek immigrants George and Pota Mandros Rizeakos. One of 11 children, she was a self-educated woman who had to leave public school before the eighth grade to help support her family, survivors say. A Saco resident for the past 65 years, Mrs. Ladakakos was a constant source of stability, support and hospitality for her family and community, and family members say she had her husband believed family and hearth were the cornerstones of a fulfilling life. Mrs. Ladakakos was known in the Greek community as an indefatigable worker. She was an active member of the Sorority of Lacones, St. Fontini Ladies' Society of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, and was the annual coordinator of her pastry-making specialties, diples and tiganithes. As well, she was an active supporter of the church's relocation and its many fundraising activities, survivors say. Mrs. Ladakakos owned and operated Toni's Beauty Shop in Old Orchard Beach for 40 years. Her business resulted in a number of lifelong friendships and her former clients often visited her at home after she retired. She was predeceased by her husband, George L. Ladakakos in 1989 and by a daughter, Patricia L. Somerville in 1970. Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Mrs.). John) L. She was born March 9, 1931 in Biddeford, a daughter of Diomede and Flore (Potvin) Boissonnault, and was educated locally. Mrs. Dubois and her family lived in eight states as her husband was relocated during his career, and moved to West Yarmouth in 1970. Mrs. Dubois was an active volunteer, teaching arts and crafts and playing piano at Cranberry Point Nursing Home, Harwich and Liberty Commons Nursing Home, Chatham. As well, she was a volunteer with the Special Olympics of Cape Cod and received an award for her dedication and commitment. He was born in South Berwick on Nov. 28, 1913, the son of Ludger and Lille Blais Michaud, graduated from Berwick Academy in 1932 and attended the University of New Hampshire and Wentworth Institute in Boston. For many years he was a self-employed machinist. Edward and his wife Gladys retired to the Limington area in 1977. He enjoyed furniture making, painting and carving. At one time he taught a night class for carving for SAD 6. She was born in Southington, Conn., a daughter of Gaetano and Marie Sirullo Thomasino, attended Southington schools and graduated from Lewis High School. A registered nurse, she graduated from New Britain General School of Nursing in 1935. Her nursing career included many years as a private nurse at the Meridian Hospital and as a school nurse for the Southington School Department. She married John A. Petrillo in 1937. He died in 1989. One of 11 children, Mrs. Petrillo was considered a strong central figure by her family. Among her many hobbies and interests were crocheting afghans for family members, friends and charitable organizations and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born in Lawrence, Mass. in December 1911, a son of Carl John and Minnie Hoppe Wurzbacher, and graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston. Mr. Wurzbacher was a mail supervisor on the Boston-to-Bangor train route and the mobile highway Post Office until retirement in 1971. He spent many years in Lantana, Fla. and summers in Ogunquit before moving to Wells. He was a member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church and an elder member of Faith Presbyterian Church of Palm Springs, Fla. He was a member of many bible study groups in Florida. He enjoyed collecting coins and stamps, collecting and reading maps, bowling, playing shuffleboard and reading. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Jean Douglas Wurzbacher of Wells; a son. Carl T. She was born in Ashland on April 25, 1909, the daughter of John and Mary (Pelletier) Theriault, and attended Ashland and Sanford schools. She was employed for about 20 years at the former Goodall-Sanford Textile Mills. Mrs. Fortier was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church. A devoutly religious lady, she was also a member of the Ladies of Ste. Anne, the Altar Society, The Propagation of the Faith, The Confraternity of the Precious Blood, The Marianist Spiritual Alliance, The Franciscan Missionary Union and The Little Flower Society. Fournier, 60, of Storer Street, died at home Sunday. He was born in Somersworth, N.H. on April 12, 1939, a son of Alexander and Eva Vanasse Fournier, and was educated in Somersworth schools. Mr. Fournier served with the U.S. Coast Guard. He had been employed with the Biddeford Fire Dept. from 1968 to 1973, retiring due to ill health. He was a member of the Biddeford Eagles and the Rochambeau Club and enjoyed stock car racing. His wife, Jeannine A. Gagnon Fournier, died on March 6, 1974. She was born Feb. 1, 1916 in New York City, a daughter of Sandford G. and Dorothy (McKinney) Etherington, graduated in 1933 from The Brearley School in New York and received her bachelor's degree from Vassar College in 1937. She moved to Fortunes Rocks from West Hartford, Conn. in 1969, summering in Maine and wintering in West Palm Beach, Fla. A volunteer at the former Webber Hospital in Biddeford, she had been named Volunteer of the Year by the University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a member of St. Philips by the Sea Church in Fortunes Rocks. A woman with a great sense of humor, Mrs. Gibson was an accomplished tennis player and enjoyed knitting, reading, needlepoint and surfing the Internet. Her first husband, Richard W. Banfield, died in 1963. Two brothers and a sister have also passed away. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, John R. Gregoire BIDDEFORD -- Ralph "Raoul" G. Gregoire, 74, of South Street, died Monday at Southern Maine Medical Center. He was born in Biddeford on Nov. 23, 1925, a son of John and Olivine Bisson Gregoire, and was educated at St. Andre's School. Mr. Gregoire served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. His ship was torpedoed and sunk 20 miles off the coast of France on the third morning after D-Day, and he was again forced to leave his ship on the second D-Day, August 15, when German planes fired on it. He received shrapnel wounds and burned his hands while swimming in burning oil in the sea. He worked in Connecticut, then was employed as a pipe fitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years. He also operated Gregoire's Oil Company in the 1960s and 1970s, then owned and operated the Water Street Market and Laundromat. He was also a landlord of buildings on Main, Water, Cleaves and Clifford streets. He was a life member and past Post Commander of the Amvets, Merton Ira Staples Post No.1 in Biddeford. He was also a member of the DAV in Biddeford, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was active in Biddeford Democratic Party politics. Mr. Gregoire enjoyed baseball, football, touring, riding and dining out. A son, Gerard R., died June 16, 1961. A brother, Richard, died in 1963 and a sister, Lena, died in 1924. Survivors include one son, John of Sanford; one daughter, Margaret Ann of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Aline Guay of Biddeford; one brother, Omer of Biddeford; one granddaughter and his companion of 32 years, Ramona Gagnon of Biddeford. She was born Oct. 20, 1939 in St. Petersburg, Pa., the daughter of Dr. Gordon R. and Ruth Ziegler Graff, and was a 1961 graduate of Penn State with a BS in psychology and a minor in education. She taught school for three years in Broward County, Fla. schools. She then went to UCLA and received her Master's in social work. She was employed in hospitals in Los Angeles and New Jersey before coming to Maine in 1986, where she was employed with Counseling Services, Inc. in Kittery and then Jackson Brook Institute in South Portland. She retired in 1995. Mrs. Hastings was a former member of the New Providence, N.J. Rescue Squad, serving as an EMT and Crew Chief. She enjoyed quilting, reading, studying French, traveling and playing the piano. She was a member of the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport and the Academy of Certified Social Workers and was a Maine-licensed clinical social worker. She worked for the Sebago Moc Company for more than16 years and retired from there. She had been a resident of Hollis since the early 1970s. He was born on Dec. 18, 1926 in Upper Montclair, the son of Dr. Harvey Milligan and Margaret McLean (Graham) Ewing, graduated from Montclair High School with the Class of 1944 and received his Bachelors degree in Biology from Princeton University in 1948 Mr. Ewing served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had a successful career in the textile industry in New York City. He later attended Montclair State College where he obtained a degree in education. Mr. Ewing taught special education at the Montclair Public Schools. He served as an elder at the Presbyterian Church of Upper Montclair where he taught Sunday school. He was active in many community organizations including the Republican Club of Montclair. An accomplished painter and photographer, Mr. Ewing also enjoyed gardening, fishing and was also an amateur naturalist. He retired to Kennebunkport with his wife in 1992. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Hansen) Ewing, in 1997. Following graduation he enlisted in the Army and fought in the Korean War. Mr. LaPointe was born July 15, 1918 in Haverhill, Mass., the son of George and Albertine (Dionne) LaPointe, and attended Haverhill schools. He was a WW II Veteran, serving in the US Army. Mr. LaPointe was employed for 15 years with Microfab in Amesbury, Mass., making printed circuit boards. He retired in 1976. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and making things with his hands. Miss Levine was employed in the Portland area for several years and last worked for the Salvation Army in Portland, retiring in 1969 at the age of 62. Myers, 67, and a former Waterboro business operator died Feb. 26 at a Bridgton healthcare facility. He was born May 24 in Portland a son of William H. and Barbara Cutler Myers and was educated in Portland. He received a Golden Gloves Boxing Championship award in 1949. He was an Army veteran, involved with the Mountain Climbing Division, stationed in Austria in the early 1950s. He had worked for many years for Dixie Hendrix Monument Co. in Auburn. Active in the construction industry, he operated North Star-Polaris, Inc., in Waterboro until his retirement in 1994. Playing guitar since age 10, he played in several local bands and entertained with Ken MacKenzie, Dick Curless, Don Reno and Bill Ankatell. Fond of bluegrass music, he often opened his home to participants of bluegrass events. He collected rare instruments, and antique records and contributed to the Dixie flyer and National Mountain Railroader publication in Knoxville, Tenn. He enjoyed gourmet cooking, World War II history, and was an amateur sound engineer. She attended South Portland schools, graduating from South Portland High School in 1951. She worked for First National Stores for six years, for a daycare, and then for 10 years as a bookkeeper at His and Her Hair Salon. She was co-owner of Maine Mineral in Old Orchard Beach. Her hobbies included making jewelry from gems she found and collecting owls. She was an excellent seamstress. She belonged to the Society of Southern Maine Craftsman, the Maine Mineralogical and Geological Society and the Maine Country Music Association. She was predeceased by a daughter, Yvette Denise Phillips, 1953. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Robert H. She was born in Amesbury, Mass., Aug. 24, 1927, a daughter of Russell R. and Katherine Allen Greene, moved to Saco as a child and was educated in Saco schools, graduating from Thorton Academy in 1946. A homemaker, Mrs. Richer had worked at the former Eastern plastics Co. Family members say she was a sociable person who enjoyed meeting and befriending people. They also say she would never forget a name when introduced. She enjoyed dining out, watching the birds, and especially loved to be with her grandson, daughters, and family. After marrying Eugene L. Richer in 1950, she moved from Saco to Sanford. She was a communicant of St. Ignatius church, and a member of "TOPS" (a weight loss program.) She was pre-deceased by her husband in 1991 and brothers, Carlton Greene in 1991 and Robert Greene in 1987. Posted Wednesday, March 1, 2000 David Lucas SANFORD -- David Lucas, 44, of Sanford died early Wednesday at his home. He was born Oct. 13, 1955 in Marlboro, Mass., a son of Frank and Doris Guilbert Lucas. Mr. Lucas was the owner and operator of Lucas Country Store in Sanford. An Air Force veteran, he served from 1971 to 1975 and attained the rank of airman first class. Mr. Lucas was an avid outdoorsman and involved with the efforts to restore the wild turkey in the State of Maine, a bird he considered the most beautiful of God's creatures. He spent time educating anyone who would listen about the importance of good hunting practices and the appreciation of land conservation for turkeys, as well as any other wildlife. In addition to spending time at his cabin up north in Masardis, Mr. Lucas was a representative of Quaker Boy products and enjoyed sparking the interest of others to become involved with turkey calling. A registered Maine Guide, he often he took people out on turkey and deer hunting expeditions. He was president of the Maine Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, a state director of the National Bowhunter Education Foundation and founding past president of the York County Beards and Spurs Wild Turkey Federation. Mr. Lucas was also a member of the Sanford/Springvale Fish and Game Association, the Sanford/Springvale American Legion. Surviving are his wife Mary Lucas of Sanford; two sons, Ben and Jesse; a daughter, Michelle Lucas of Nova Scotia and grandson Cody of Nova Scotia; his father Frank Lucas of Westboro, Mass; three brothers, Paul Lucas of Somersworth, N.H., Scott Ricker of Westfield, Mass. and Michael Lucas-Madeiras of Wainne, Hawaii; three sisters, Janet Lucas-Valery of Ashley Falls, Mass., Rose-Marie Hall of Wheelwright, Mass. and Lisa Mascroft of Treasure Island, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Jones was employed as an automobile mechanic for Andelman Auto Services in Massachusetts before retiring and moving to North Berwick in 1973. Fond of woodworking, Mr. Jones was also talented in art. He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte Chingo Jones in 1989. Surviving are three sons, David W. Jones of Billerica, Mass, John F. She was born in Saco, March 28, 1911, a daughter of Edward William and Nellie Lowell Curran. She graduated from Thornton Academy in 1931. She moved to Charles Street in 1961 and lived there for more than 35 years. She was a member of the United Baptist Church, Saco and past president of the Bradford Chapter DeMolay mothers club, Old Orchard Beach. She enjoyed outside work and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Norwood, who died in 1980. She is survived by two nephews and three nieces. She moved from Goodwins Mills to Orange in 1959 and worked for 15 years at B & S Manufacturing Co. Among her interests were crocheting, reading and camping. Her husband, William Goodrum, died in 1971, and a son, Fred Woods, died in 1999.
