R. Kenneth Alexander Sr. Dec. 8, 1923 - April 26, 2000 R. Kenneth Alexander Sr., 76, Pleasant Hill, died Wednesday, April 26, at the Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Dec. 8, 1923, near Strasburg, the son of Robert C. and Fannie Mae (Aldridge) Alexander. Mr. Alexander spent most of his lifetime in the Pleasant Hill area. On May 23, 1943, he married Pauline "Polly" McIntrye in Kansas City. Mr. Alexander had been a member of the Pleasant Hill First Baptist Church for 44 years. He had been affiliated with the Calvary Community Church for the last several years. He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Alexander had served on the Pleasant Hill City Council in the early 1980s and was police commissioner at that time. Mr. Alexander was a life member of the Pleasant Hill VFW Post # 3118. He had worked for Fisher Body and Black-Syvalls & Bryson. He managed the Pleasant Hill Co-op station on Highway 7 for many years. He grew and sold garden produce in Pleasant Hill for 35 years. Mr. Alexander was preceded in death by three brothers, Zack Alexander, Dean Alexander and Leo Alexander; and a sister, May Alexander. Bonnie Carol Brinkman Jan. 27, 1939 - April 14, 2000 Bonnie Carol Brinkman, 61, Basking Ridge, N.J., died Friday, April 14, at her home after a battle with cancer. She was born Jan. 27, 1939, in Harrisonville, the daughter of Loyd and Georgia Roll. Mrs. Brinkman attended Harrisonville High School and the University of Missouri graduating in 1961 with a BA in education. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and the University of Missouri marching band. In 1961, she married William Brinkman. Mrs. Brinkman lived in Missouri, New Mexico, New Jersey, England and Denmark. She lived the last 12 years in Basking Ridge. She was a secretary for the Child Study Team in the Berkeley Heights school system for nine years and a teacher at Our Lady of Peace, New Providence, N.J. She retired 16 years ago. On March 7, 1956, he married Mary Burris in Eldon. He graduated from Eldon High School and received a bachelor of science degree in business management from Park College. Mr. Buster retired from the United States Air Force in August 1979 after serving 26 years. He worked for AlliedSignal in Kansas City for approximately 20 years, retiring in 1997. Mrs. Wagner was a switchboard operator for Clearfork Telephone Co. from 1950 until 1954, as a clerk for the East Lynne Country Store and in the cafeteria for the East Lynne Elementary School. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of the East Lynne Assembly of God Church and a lifelong resident of the East Lynne area. Mrs. Wagner was preceded in death by her husband, Fern Wagner, on Sept. 14, 1971; a daughter, Dorothy Wagner, in 1953; five brothers, Joe Wagner, Ed Wagner, Tom Wagner, Bill Wagner and Earl Wagner; and an infant sister, Christina Wagner. Wright Feb. 8, 1921 - April 30, 2000 Herman C. Wright, 79, Braymer, formerly of Archie, died Sunday, April 30, at the V.A. Medical Center Kansas City. He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in St. Clair County, Lowry City, the son of John Grover and Susie Anna (Parks) Wright. On Dec. 20, 1941, he married Mildred L. Shipley. Mr. Wright owned and operated a chicken hatchery and a clothing store in Archie. He was also a carpenter. He was a World War II Army veteran and was awarded the purple heart and a bronze star. Mr. Wright was a member of the United Methodist Church in Archie and the American Legion. He had served as mayor of Archie and was a member of the Archie School Board prior to his retirement in 1985. She was born March 18, 1920, in Missouri, the daughter of David and Edith Morehouse. She married Alfred Smith, who died in 1970. In 1972, she married Jack Collins in Kansas City. Mrs. Collins lived in Pleasant Hill prior to moving to Kansas City in 1959. She moved back to Pleasant Hill four years ago. She had worked at the old Pleasant Hill Garment Factory and also worked for a time at H.D. LeeÕs in Kansas City. She attended the Beverly Hills Baptist Church in Kansas City. Mrs. Collins was preceded in death by her first husband; her second husband, Jack Collins, in 1992; a son, Glen Smith; a granddaughter, Angela Lynette Hale; and a sister, Vivian Lucille Wiley. Surviving are two daughters, Judy Hale, Climax Springs, and Jerry Dinges, Olathe, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Cook Aug. 9, 1944 - Aug. 29, 2000 Kathleen Kay Cook, 56, Nowata, Okla., died Tuesday, Aug. 29, at her home. She was born Aug. 9, 1944, in Kansas City, the daughter of Fred Homer Sr. and Frances Bernice (Gaither) Monteil. Mrs. Cook was an "A" operator for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, Louisburg, Kan., for 13 years. She was also a sales associate for J. Harold Smith Real Estate, Harrisonville, and was a unit secretary for Moore County Hospital District, Dumas, Texas. She was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Nowata where she was very active. She was a former member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Harrisonville, and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Dumas. Mrs. Cook lived in Harrisonville since 1985 before moving to Dumas and then to Nowata in May 2000. She was involved in the community wherever she lived. She was preceded in death by her mother. She was born Nov. 28, 1912, near Garden City, the daughter of Louis Pheilding and Ida Alice (Hough) Jones. On May 1, 1937, she married Harris J. Gross, in Garden City. Mrs. Gross and her husband operated Gross Produce in Garden City in 1936 and later operated a grocery store until 1964. She became a cook for the Garden City School District and retired in 1981 from Sherwood Cass R-VIII School District, Creighton. She was a 1930 graduate of Garden City High School. Mrs. Gross was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Quilting Ladies, Index Auxiliary Club and the Matrons Club all of Garden City. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Harris Gross, May 18, 1982; an infant daughter, Bonnie Lou; three sisters, Ruth Randol, Clara Elliott, and Gladys Pollard; and a brother, Verl Jones. She was born Feb. 20, 1911, in Martin City, the daughter of George W. and DeLana (Calhoun) Garten. The family moved to a farm near Peculiar shortly after her birth. In 1919 they moved to the South Fork community, south of Freeman. On Nov. 23, 1939, she married Henry ÒShagÓ Halcomb. Mrs. Halcomb worked as a bookkeeper for the Gas Service Company and later worked for Bowman Photography Studio. In 1949, she and her husband moved to Mound City and purchased the Mound City Cleaning Shop, which they operated until 1974 when they sold the shop. She moved to Harrisonville in 1974. VanSandt April 24, 1928 - August 28, 2000 Cassius Lorenzo "C.L." VanSandt, 72, Adrian, died Monday, Aug. 28, in Kansas City. He was born April 24, 1928, in Austin east of Archie, the son of Lorenzo Dow "Curly" and Edith Mae (Weaver) VanSandt. Mr. VanSandt graduated from Archie High School in May 1946. On May 26, 1950, he married Ina May Hahn at the Ohio Street United Methodist Church in Butler. In 1953, he moved from Kansas City to southwest of Adrian. From September 1946 until August 1948 Mr. VanSandt served his country with the 507th Port Marine Maintenance Company of the 61st Transportation Service Battalion U.S. Army. Following his discharge he returned to work for Warner Oil Co. in Archie until January 1949 when he was hired at Fisher Body, General Motors Assembly Plant in Kansas City. He farmed until his retirement in 1992. Mr. VanSandt was a member of the United Methodist Church, Adrian, and a former member of the Mid-America Dairy Association. He served as a 4-H Club project leader and a Little League baseball coach. He was preceded in death by a son, Melvin Dale VanSandt; and two brothers, Everett Hale and Lawrence Dean VanSandt. Allen Wilson Brownfield Aug. 26, 1902 - Oct. 6, 2000 Dr. Allen Wilson Brownfield, 98, formerly of Pleasant Hill, died Friday, Oct. 6, at Wiltshire at Lakewood in Lee's summit. He was born Aug. 26, 1902, near Lee's Summit, the son of Charley and Eliza Brownfield. Mr. Brownfield attended Tennison Grade School and graduated from Lee's Summit High School. He graduated from Kansas City Western Dental College in 1925. He practiced in Buckner several years before a hand injury forced him to give up his dental practice. At that time, he attended Williams Institute of Embalming and Funeral Directing in 1931. In 1934, he opened the Brownfield Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill. In 1937, he married Nelle Heslar of Kansas City. Mr. Brownsfield owned and operated the Pleasant Hill Monument business where he designed the war veterans' memorial monument placed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In 1955, he sold both businesses. He devoted much time to Pleasant Hill civic work serving as city councilman, secretary for Kiwanis Club, co-founder of the Falcon Club, Pleasant Hill Cemetery Board and president and charter member of Masonic Lodge with a lifetime membership. Mr. Brownfield served 37 consecutive years as director of three life insurance companies, National Union of Poplar Bluff, co-founder and director of American Standard of Poplar Bluff, Appalacean National Life of Knoxville, Tenn, co-founder and director of Webco Corporation of Poplar Bluff. He was a member of Jewel Lodge #480 AF&AM of Pleasant Hill, the Bayard Commandery #26 of Harrisonville, the Wyoming Chapter #43 of Royal Arch Masons, member of Ararat Shrine, Kansas City, and of the Pleasant Hill Christian Church where he served as an elder. Orbie Woodrow Farnsworth March 7, 1913 - Oct. 5, 2000 Orbie Woodrow Farnsworth, 87, Pleasant Hill, died Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Pleasant Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 7, 1913, in Quick City, the son of Samuel Allen and Birtie Rockhill (Hixon) Farnsworth. Mr. Farnsworth graduated from Holden High School. On Sept. 8, 1937, he married Virginia Elizabeth Rector in Warrensburg. He was employed at the Bendix plant in Kansas City for over 23 years prior to retiring in the late 1970s. He was also a farmer and hauled livestock and grain for others in addition to driving the Cass County library van. Mr. Farnsworth lived on a farm near Blairstown before moving to a farm west of Pleasant Hill in 1954, he moved to town 16 years ago. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill First Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was active in the tape ministry of the church and enjoyed delivering audio tapes of each Sunday's worship service to shut-ins and those in nursing facilities. Preceding him in death was a brother, Clifton Farnsworth, in 1967. Henry Floyd Hertzberg Sept. 29, 1907 - Oct. 2, 2000 Henry Floyd Hertzberg, 93, Harrisonville, died Monday, Oct. 2, at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville. He was born Sept. 29, 1907, in Prairie Home, Cooper County, the son of Henry and Laura (Hornbeck) Hertzberg. On June 10, 1931, he married Lelah Hammontree. Mr. Hertzberg had lived in Harrisonville since 1935 before moving to Stockton where he worked as the deputy county collector. After moving to Harrisonville in 1935, he worked for several years at a Kansas City Star route carrier between Harrisonville and Clinton. Later, he went into the auto supply business, retiring in 1969 as the owner/operator of Midwest Auto Store in Harrisonville. Mr. Hertzberg was an active member of the First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon since 1939. On Aug. 4, 1992, he married Zona Leavell Gaston. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife of 59 years, Lelah Hammontree Hertzberg; and two brothers, Robert Hertzberg and Herman Hertzberg. Gate, 56, Pleasant Hill, died Friday, Oct. 6, at the Medical Center of Independence. She was born June 24, 1944, in Florence, S.C., the daughter of Warren and Pauline (Sparks) Brown. On Jan. 26, 1979, she married Merle D. Gates in Miami, Okla. As a small child she moved with her family to Santa Rosa and then to the Kansas City - Raytown area. She attended school in Raytown and graduated from Raytown High School. She later moved to Independence and lived there and in Kansas City until 1983 when they moved to Pleasant Hill. Daniel Lee Ketchum May 26, 1944 - Oct. 7, 2000 Daniel Lee Ketchum, 56, Lampe, died Saturday, Oct. 7, at his home after a long bout with cancer. He was born May 26, 1944, in Kansas City, the son of Robert Ketchum and Patricia (Rouse) Norman. In 1977, he married Connie Jane Flanary. Mr. Ketchum served in the United States Navy. He was a member of Our Lady of the Cove Catholic Church and a third-degree knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gabriel Seth. Mr. Ketchum retired from Ford Motor Company, Claycomo, after 30 years and moved to the Ozarks where he worked at Silver Dollar City. He was born Dec. 3, 1933, in Pineville, the son of James William McGlade and Velma Leona (Toliver) Kidd. On May 3, 1957, he married Vivian M. Bennett in Harrisonville. Mr. Kidd operated several service stations around the county, including stations in Harrisonville, Freeman and Pleasant Hill. He worked in the maintenance department for the Cass R-IX Schools in Harrisonville from 1981 until his retirement in 1996, when he was presented the golden bell. He was involved in the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts for approximately 32 years. He received many awards including scouters' training award; scouters' key; commissioners arrowhead honor and basic leadership training; and received a certificate of appreciation for outstanding service. He served as scoutmaster and was selected an assistant district commissioner. Mr. Kidd was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. His tribal name was Lone Stajotie. He attended scout camp 26 years as a tribesman. He helped found the Harrisonville Wrestling Club and worked as a surrogate parent for youth in group homes. Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Teddy Mack Kidd, Tommy Olin Kidd, Robert Kidd, Richard Kidd and Bennie Kidd; and a sister, Twyla Simpson. After moving to Fort Scott she rant the bus station for 15 years and later delivered newspapers for the Fort Scott Tribune. Chester Harold Shelton April 16, 1902 - Nov. 4, 2000 Chester Harold Shelton, 98, Butler, died Saturday, Nov. 4, at Medica Lodge of Butler. He was born April 16, 1902, near Merwin in Bates County, the son of Daniel Harold and Jennie Clarissa (Larned) Shelton. On Oct. 20, 1924, he married Freda Mae Davidson. Mr. Shelton helped build the Adrian Lake in the 1930s with his team of horses. He was a lifetime farmer. In 1997, at age 95, he would ride his grandson's four wheeler back into the pasture to cut thistles. He served as the Shawnee Township assessor for a number of years. Mr. Shelton was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. He served as a Sunday school superintendent for 30 plus years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Freda Mae Shelton; two brothers, Ernest Shelton and Lacy Shelton; a sister, Alice Cumpton; two sons-in-law, Vernon Morrow and Mike Walsh; and a granddaughter-in-law, Gail Morrow. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of Operating Engineers Local 101, Kansas City. She was born March 25, 1898, in Merwin, the daughter of Joseph L. and Stella Euans Hayes. March 25, 1961, she married John F. Long, Drexel. June 9, 1974, she married Wayne L. Willhoite, Drexel. Mrs. Willhoite was a member of the Christian Church in Merwin and was the pianist for 15 years. She began playing there at the age of 11. In 1924, she moved to Kansas City and transferred her membership to the Roanoke Christian Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Swope Park Chapter #520, Kansas City, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Drexel and the Bates County Auxiliary of Veterans of World War I Barracks 623, Butler. Mrs. Willhoite worked in the billing department of the George A. Breon Company in Kansas City for many years. When the company sold to the Sterling Drug Company she went with the firm to New York City for a month to help organize the office there. After returning to Kansas City, she worked for the B.F. Ascher Company from 1950 until she retired in 1961. After moving to Drexel she transferred to the Drexel Christian Church were she was pianist and organist for 25 years. Preceding her in death were her first husband, John F. Long, April 6, 1970; and her second husband, Wayne L. Willhoite, Nov. 19, 1980. She was born September 13, 1910, in Arnett, Oklahoma, the daughter of Almus L. and Elizabeth (Brown) Todd. Mrs. Long moved to Missouri in 1915 and was a lifelong Harrisonville resident. She married Kenneth Long on December 24, 1934, at Loretta’s parent’s home in Harrisonville. Loretta graduated from Harrisonville High School in 1929 and then continued her education at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. She began her teaching career in 1931 and taught at Elm Branch, Knight and Walnut Grove, all one-room schools in rural Cass County. She later taught junior high math in Peculiar before joining the Harrisonville School faculty in 1954 and continued to teach there until she retired on May 19, 1975, having taught in Cass County for 31 years. Mrs. Long also earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Central Missouri State during the years she taught in Harrisonville. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Harrisonville; Bayard Chapter No. 179, Order of Eastern Star and was a past matron; Mary Sibley Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution; Missouri Retired Teachers’ Association and Missouri Alpha Delta Kappa and was a past president. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Kenneth Long, on Dec. 24, 1996; and two brothers, Silas and Howard Todd. Ernest Frank Snuggs Sept. 18, 1918 - Nov. 27, 2000 Ernest Frank Snuggs, 82, Adrian, died Monday, Nov. 27, at Bates County Memorial Hospital, Butler. He was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Akron, Colo., the son of Frank Ernest and Madge Marie (Auten) Snuggs. Mr. Snuggs was a high school graduate and had worked for most of his life as an over-the-road truck driver. Many of those years were spent working for C.J. Yoder Trucking in Pleasant Hill. He enlisted in the United States Army Jan. 24, 1940, and served during World War II. He was discharged as a first sergeant Feb. 27, 1945. On July 22, 1965, he married Lucy J. (Rinehart) Randall. He lived in the Freeman community from 1970 until 1989 when he moved to the Adrian area. Surviving are his wife, Lucy "Sue" Snuggs; three sons, Jerry Randall, Gary Randall and John Randall; three daughters, Nancy Rick, Jaunita Butler and Marsha LaFollette; and 10 grandchildren. She was born April 25, 1909, in Harrisonville, the daughter of William and Ollie (McGartlin) Burchett. In 1925, she married William A. Norman. They were married for 56 years. They farmed and built the Shamrock Motel and operated it for 17 years. July 17, 1986, she married Basil Viles. Mrs. Viles was a member of the RLDS Church in Pleasant Hill. She was also a member of the senior citizens and Royal Neighbors. He was born Dec. 14, 1919, in DeSoto, the son of Charles William and Daisy Isabelle (Staton) Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a 1939 graduate of Harrisonville High School. On Jan. 16, 1944, he married Nancy Elizabeth Roberts in Harrisonville. He was employed as a signalman for Missouri Pacific Railroad, Kansas City, until his retirement in 1964. Later, he was employed by Wagner Electronics, Kansas City. Mr. Wilson was a member of the United Methodist Church, Harrisonville, and an Army veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4409, Harrisonville, and served as a past commander of several VFW posts in Missouri. In 1927, she married Samuel Robert Nicoll. Mrs. Nichols moved to Kansas City in 1935 to live with Samuel's family. She was employed at the Nelly Don Garment Factory in Kansas City. Later, she moved to a farm west of Archie. In 1948, she married Clarence P. Nichols. They worked the family farm south of Archie until they retired and moved to Archie in 1970. Mrs. Nichols was a member of the First Christian Church in Adrian and the Optimist Club in Archie. She moved to Parsons in 1995. Mrs. Nichols was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence P. Nichols in 1979. Virginia May Bauer May 10, 1919 - March 30, 2001 Virginia May Bauer, 81, Golden, died Friday, March 30, at her home. She was born May 10, 1919, in Sycamore, Ill., the daughter of Harry and Anna (Nord) Cornwall. On Aug. 5, 1938, in Sycamore, Ill., she was united in marriage to Cyril O. Bauer, who survives. She is also survived by three sons; Michael Bauer, Cushing, Wis., Stephen Bauer, Baldwin City, Kan., and Thomas Bauer, Gladewater, Texas; three daughters, Laurie Todd, St. Joseph, Susan Thorup, Overland Park, Kan., and Mary Kay Dandurand, Warrensburg; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Nelson, Port Angeles, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Mrs. Bauer always enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas. She would bake, sew and decorate to make it a special time for family and friends. She loved to entertain, pancake breakfasts, bridge parties and airing of the quilts. At one time, Virginia and her sister, Helen, operated a small business in Sycamore, Ill., The Doll Shop. They sold and repaired dolls and sewed handmade doll clothes. Virginia loved to bake, especially yeast breads and is well-known for her Sweet Petals coffee cake. Quilting had been a passion for her the last several years. She made certain that all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have received at least one of her handmade quilts (even quilts for the great-grandbabies due this year). She was a loyal Chiefs, Royals and Lady Bears fan. She loved to travel the USA. She always enjoyed a good bridge game. She was an active member and past president of Holy Family Church Ladies Guild. She was a member and past president of Ozark Country Quilters. She had been involved in 4-H, square dancing and Garden Club. Always most important to Virginia was her family. She loved to have her family around her. There are many wonderful memories to be grateful for. She will be greatly missed. He was a veteran of World War II. Sept. 6, 1939, he married Bernice M. Cummins in Garden City. He lived and worked in Harrisonville until 1959 when he moved his family to California where he worked for Shell Oil Company for 20 years. Upon his retirement in 1979, he moved back to Harrisonville. In 1990 he moved to Washington where he lived until his death. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harrisonville. Mr. Holaday was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Bernice Holaday, in 1999; a brother, Gene Holaday; and a sister, Florence Parisean. Surviving are a son, James R. Thomas, 85, died Sunday, April 1, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville. She was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Sacramento, Calif., the daughter of Edwin Larkin and Mary Adeline (White) Tobin. November 27, 1935, she married Clyde W. Thomas in Independence. They moved to Drexel in 1954 and took over the almost defunct newspaper. Mrs. Thomas was involved in the PTA, Lions Club Auxiliary, Baptist Church Women's Circle and many other civic and community projects. She was also a charter member of the Cass Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary and was a longtime member of the Cass County Democrat Central Committee. Due to illness in 1979, the Drexel Star, was sold to her son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Trudy Thomas. She had lived in Sacramento, Calif., the Kansas City/Independence area. She grew up in the northeast section of Kansas City and graduated from Northeast High School in 1934. She moved to Drexel in 1954. While living in Independence Mrs. Thomas worked for Montgomery WardÕs main store at Belmont and St. John. She was an active member of the Maywood Baptist Church. After moving to Drexel She became a member of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Thomas moved to Crown Care Center in Harrisonville in July 2000. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years, Clyde W. Thomas, in 1988; three brothers, Clyde Richard Tobin, who was lost in World War II, H. Isaac Tobin, 1990; and Raymond Edwin Tobin, 1995. She graduated from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg with a degree in photography and anthropology. The further pursue her anthropology career, she traveled to China. Ms. Yates had worked as a studio assistant for Bartz Photography in Butler, as an assistant photographer for both Paul McMillan at VanDeusen Photography and Kelly Daniel in Prairie Village, Kan. For the past four years, she had been a photographer for Skinner-Vaughn in Harrisonville. She was a member of the Missouri Professional Photographers, Professional Photographers Association of Greater Kansas City and Professional Photographers of America. He was born April 11, 1929, in Wya-conda, the son of Roy L. and Elma (Smart) Doyle. On May 15, 1948, he married Doris Fern Storm in Bosworth at the Methodist Church. Mr. Doyle had lived in Free-man for 50 years. He had worked for Amoco Pipeline for 41 years, retiring April 1, 1988. He was a member of the Freeman Baptist Church and was a 50-year member of the Hale City Masonic Lodge No. 216, re-ceiving his 50-year pin in February 2001. Mr. Doyle served as mayor and chief of police of Freeman from 1958 until 1978. He was an auxiliary deputy for the Cass Coun-ty Sheriff’s Office from 1958 until 1984. He was born May 21, 1915, in Harrisonville, the son of Lee and Marie (Smith) Marquette. Mr. Marquette was a lifelong Harri-sonville resident. On July 24, 1944, he married Birdelle Henderson. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was a graduate of Harri-sonville High School and a 1937 graduate of William Jewell Col-lege, Liberty where he was a member of Kappa Alpha. Mr. Marquette was a retired commander of the United States Navy Reserves and was a naval air pilot during World War II. He was a member of several local organizations, including Kiwa-nis Club, VFW Post 4409 and the American Legion Post 42. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. He owned and operated Mar-quette’s Men’s Wear in Harri-son-ville from 1947 until 1960 and owned and operated the local Dairy Queen from 1972 until 1999. He was a partner of Sham-rock Hills Golf Club in Lee’s Sum-mit. Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife, Birdelle Marquette, on Sept. 22, 2000. Mrs. Zimmerman had been employed as a telephone operator for United Telephone Company, Harrisonville, until her retirement in March 1982. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Harr-ison-ville, and had been attending the Church of the Nazarene in Harri-sonville. She had lived in Urich, Creigh-ton, Garden City and Pleas-ant Hill before moving to Harrisonville in 1988. Preceding her in death were her first husband, Abe Koger, in December 1976; her second husband, Glen Hedgpeth, in August 1988; three brothers, Vasco, Paul and Blevins; and two sisters, Ora Mae Ewing and Florence Pruett. He was born Jan. 14, 1913, in Locke, Ark., the son of Jethero Monroe and Edith (Methina) Hooper. On Aug. 3, 1946, he married Claire Virginia Read in Kansas City, Kan. Mr. Hooper lived in Linden until 1952 when he moved to the Pleasant Hill area. Mr. Hooper had been em-ployed by the Kansas City Power and Light Company for 20 years and had been a dairy farmer. He retired in 1972. He was a member of the Strasburg Union Church and served on the board as vice president of the church board of directors for several years. She was born Dec. 19, 1905, in Burdette, the daughter of William and Ida Elizabeth (Long) Dal-getty. Mrs. Catron graduated from Adrian High School in 1925. She began working as a beautician when she was a senior in high school. At that time beauticians had to be apprenticed for one year before becoming operators. She took her apprenticeship from Lila Wilhite. Later, she married Troy Catron and moved to Kansas and passed a test for her Kansas license. After four years they returned to Adrian. In 1931, she opened the Dar-lene’s Beauty Shop. In 1951, she and her husband bought the building on Main Street in Adrian and she added a line of gift items. Mrs. Catron was a member of the First Baptist Church of Adrian where she taught children’s Sunday school for 74 years. She is survived by two sisters, Helen Clark and Zoe Rexroad. She had been employed by the government and had worked for the Defense Finance and Ac-counting Center in Kansas City. Mrs. Fellers was active in ministry and church work and started and led the Cass-Midway Youth for Christ Club. She received certification for ministry from Rhe-ma Bible College. Maxine June Hibbs Sept. 9, 1921 - Jan. 28, 2002 Maxine June Hibbs, 80, Ches-ter-field, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Chesterfield. She was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Kansas City, the daughter of Mur-ray M. and Merle (Sloan) Dun-ham. On July 7, 1951, she married Ralph Kenneth Hibbs at the Broadway United Methodist Church, Kansas City. Mrs. Hibbs attended grade school in Raytown and was a graduate of Rich Hill High School, Rich Hill. She was a graduate of Kansas City Business College. She had been employed at Southwestern Bell as a telephone operator through the 1940s and Illinois Bell during the early 1950s. Mrs. Hibbs and her husband were partners in Kelly-Hibbs Buick, a car dealership in the Boston suburb of Worcester, Mass, from 1959 until 1967. She was a member of the Rich Hill Christian Church and served in many volunteer roles, including various church circles and the American Diabetes and Heart Association. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Ralph H. Hibbs, on March 9, 1998. Pallbearers were her nieces and nephews. He was born April 28, 1930, in Heppler, Kan., the son of Grover and Lillie (Shields) Roberts. Mr. Roberts started in the printing business at an early age, working for the Bates County Democrat. He later worked for the Midwest Envelope Company in Kansas City, and for Cass Coun-ty Publishing Company in Harrisonville, before health forced his retirement in 1987. Preceding him in death were his son, Barry Stephen Roberts; and grandchildren, Lyle Henry Herman Jr. and Misty Nickel. Shughart April 2, 1910 - Feb. 1, 2002 Helena M. Shughart, 91, Warsaw, formerly of Kansas City, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at her home. She was born April 2, 1910, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Harry E. and Sarah (Stokes) Wilcox. Mrs. Shughart attended Robi-doux School in St. Joseph and col-lege at Camden Point Acad-e-my. She was in nurses training at General Hospital in Kansas City and later became supervisor at Lakeside Hospital. She did private duty nursing for physicians. On Feb. 21, 1931, she married Roy Edward Shughart. She was active in Quindaro Homes Association where she was editor of the Quindaro Homes newspaper, Bluebirds, March of Dimes, United Way and was a district director for the Red Cross. Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Roy Shughart. Colclasure Nov. 24, 1917 - May 14, 2002 James Lawrence Colclasure Sr., 85, died May 14, 2002, at the VA Hospital in Kansas City. He was born Nov. 24, 1917, in Coffeyville, Kan., the son of Arthur R. and Etta M. (Hill) Colclasure. In 1971, he married Gretta Louise Newport-Maude. Mr. Colclasure moved to Kansas City in 1925 and graduated from Argentine High School in 1935. He served in the United States Army Air Corps and was discharged on May 14, 1946. He had lived in Kansas City, Independence, Adrian; and Mound City, Kan., since 1992. Mr. Colclasure had been employed as a color photo technician at Roland Jeanerette for 25 years. He served on the executive board of the Silver Haired Legislature, District III AAA of Missouri and as voluntary long-term care resident ombudsmen for nursing homes. He was active in the senior centers in Butler and Mound City; and was a member of the VFW for 30 years. He attended the First Baptist Church of Mound City. He attended several old fiddlers conventions as a member of the Marmaton Valley Chapter. Preceding him in death were his parents; a stepson, Fred Maude; and a grandson, Chris Orpin. Cook Jan. 11, 1912 - May 19, 2002 Rose Carroll Cook, 90, Harrisonville, died May 19, 2002, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville. She was born Jan. 11, 1912, in Bland (Gasconade County). In August 1942, she married Robert H. Cook in Lee’s Summit. Mrs. Cook moved with her family to Raytown in 1918 and resided in the area for the 83 years. She received her degrees in education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, formerly the University of Kansas City. Her 42 years of teaching spanned the one-room schoolhouse, where she taught all eight grades for 11 years, to the Raytown Public School system where she taught elementary school and substituted in junior high and high school from 1952 to 1980. Mrs. Cook was a member of the Missouri and Raytown Retired Teachers’ associations, as well as the UMKC Alumni Association. Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Robert Cook, in March 1983. Surviving are a son, Walter L. Ferkenhoff Oct. 10, 1935 - May 14, 2002 William “Bill” Henry Ferkenhoff, 66, Peculiar, died May 14, 2002, at his home. He was born Oct. 10, 1935, in Kansas City, the son of William T. and Marion H. (Wynne) Ferkenhoff. Mr. Ferkenhoff was a technical adviser at the time of his retirement from Sears Logistic Services on June 30, 1993. He also had served on the board of directors and was president of the Sears Credit Union for several years. He had been with Sears for more than 40 years. Preceding him in death were his parents; and a granddaughter, Jessica Marie Jackson. Powers Jan. 29, 1918 - May 19, 2002 Edward Lee Powers, 84, Harrisonville, died May 19, 2002, at Research Medical Center, Kansas City. He was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Springfield, Ill., the son of William A. and Edith (Hurst) Powers. On May 27, 1976, he married Lucille Worel in Harrisonville. Mr. Powers retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1962. He was a cook and technical sergeant and served his country during World War II and the Korean War. He lived in Kansas City several years before moving to Cass County. He was baptized at the Baptist Church in Springfield, Ill. He was a member of the American Legion. Tierney July 21, 1929 - May 20, 2002 Eugene Frances Tierney, 72, Pleasant Hill, died Monday, May 20, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City. He was born July 21, 1929, in Kansas City, the son of Richard John Sr. and Catherine Joyce Tierney. Mr. Tierney graduated from Sacred Heart Elementary, Lillis High School in 1947 and attended Rockhurst College. He served in the U.S. Army’s 5th AAA Battalion from 1951 through 1953. On Feb. 18, 1956, he married Lucille Batman. Mr. Tierney was active in farming for nearly 45 years and owned and operated a grain elevator in Grain Valley. Later he farmed near Harrisonville. He was a member of VFW Post 4409 and Stanley Pack Post 0499 of the American Legion. He was also a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Fr. Puetz Council 6550 in Harrisonville. Preceding him in death were his parents; and a brother, Richard Tierney Jr. Surviving are his wife, Lucille Tierney, Pleasant Hill; three sons, John, Daniel and Christopher; three daughters, Jane Pohlod, Ann Kirk and Susan Barr; a brother, James E. Tierney; three sisters, Marie Winkler, Patricia Gregg and Kathleen Tierney; and two grandchildren. The funeral mass was May 24 at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Lee’s Summit. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of the Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eugene F. Tierney Endowment Trust Fund for Catholic Education. John T. White March 18, 1931 - May 14, 2002 John Thomas White, 71, Harrisonville, died May 14, 2002, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville. He was born March 18, 1931, in West Monroe, La., the son of Jim and Elizabeth Maye (Frazier) White. Mr. White had lived in West Monroe and Amarilla, Texas, before moving to Harrisonville in 1968. In 1956, he married Anna Martha Herrman in Lawton, Okla. He was a Korean War Army veteran. He had worked for Consolidated Freightways for 30 years, retiring in 1998. He was a former member of Local 41 of the Teamsters. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Anna White, Nov. 12, 1992; and four brothers, Melvin, Herman, Thelbert, J.B. Surviving are two sons, Johnnie White and Tommy White, both of Harrisonville; four brothers, Ray White, Vicksburg, Miss., Henry White, Huntsville, Ark., Benny White, Bosco, La., and Wayne White, Junction City, Kan.; and a sister, Lillian Cochrell, Bastrop, La. Cremation. Services were May 20 at the Atkinson Chapel with the Rev. Henry Green officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
