Oma Roberts Brown Barnhart Oma Roberts Brown Barnhart, 88, of Caro, Mich., a native of Tuscumbia, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Caro Community Hospital. She was born Aug. 3, 1910, in Tuscumbia. In 1930, she was married in Crocker to Norman Brown, who died in 1971. In 1973 she was married in Caro, Mich., to Everett Barnhart, who died in 1991. Mrs. Barnhart retired from Caro Regional Center in 1968. She was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Kedron Chapter 33, Order of the Eastern Star. She also painted and exhibited china. Surviving her are six children, Roberta Brinkman of Unionville, Mich., Peggy Marker of Akron, Mich., Betty Brown of Caro, Mich., Agnes Sue Jayne of Tawas, Mich., Norman Brown of Louisville, Ky., and Patricia Turner of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Shirley Wakely of Troy, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucy Umstead and Juanita Marriott, both of Eldon. Zuck, 74, of Eldon died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at Capital Region Medical Center - Madison in Jefferson City. She was born July 11, 1924, in Lexington, Okla., to Hosie M. and Dona Melinda May Morris. On July 24, 1946, she was married in Wichita, Kan., to Chet Zuck Sr., who died Aug. 7, 1997. Mrs. Zuck was active in the Eldon First Christian Church. During World War II, she was employed with Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City, where she was involved in the manufacture of C-47s. She also had been a production worker at Chesebrough Ponds in Jefferson City. Wolfe, 77, died at his home in Bethell, Wash., on Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998. He was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Eldon to Hargett and Jennie Ellen Harvey Wolfe. In 1942, he was married in Long Beach, Calif., to Dorothy Fager, who died in 1984. Mr. Wolfe was a retired Navy chief petty officer. She taught school in Miller and Morgan counties but had been a resident of Las Vegas for 44 years. He was born Sept. 3, 1899, in Cole County to H. H. and Elizabeth VanHoosier Kroeger. On Dec. 29, 1921, he was married in Cole County to Pearl Marie Bainer, who died Aug. 23, 1964. Mr. Kroeger was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of the Eldon First Baptist Church and had been self-employed as a mechanic and painter. Fendorf Retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander James E. Fendorf died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, of cancer at Dwight David Eisenhower Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kan. He was a former resident of Eldon. He was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Jefferson City to Frank and Icie Mayfield Fendorf. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in the Ozarks and later graduated from Stanford University and attended U.S. Navy post graduate school in Monterey, Calif. He was a Navy pilot with 10,000 hours flight time, primarily with the Pacific Fleet. He was among the first pilots to fly into Korea when the war started in 1950, and participated in most of the major actions, including the Pusan Perimeter, the Inchon Invasion and the race to the Yalu River border between North Korea and Manchuria. Among his last flights were the evacuation of Marines and soldiers from the Chosin Reservoir through the post of Hungnam. Lt. Commander Fendorf flew a total of 49 missions over Korea. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. In connection with his Navy duties, he flew throughout the world, including support for the Dominican Republic Action in 1965. He also participated in several support flights in and out of Vietnam during 1965, 1966 and 1967, during which he flew C130 assault aircraft. He also participated in two tours in Antarctica in 1964 and 1965, flying ski-equipped C130 aircraft. For this, he was recognized by having a glacier (Fendorf Glacier) in Queen Maude Land named after him. After he retired from the Navy, Lt. Commander Fendorf worked as an investigator and assistant district director for the National Association of Securities Dealers. He retired in 1987 after 18 years. Surviving him are his wife of 39 years, Gloria Yvonne; three daughters, Lisa Hoefgen of Bedford, Texas, Geri Urban of Leavenworth and Cherre Miller of Weston; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers, Frank Fendorf of Overland Park, Kan., and Dr. Kenneth M. Fendorf of Aptos Beach, Calif; two sisters, Carolyn M. Fendorf of Lenexa, Kan., and Marilyn Gunderman of Overland Park, Kan. DeVore, 78, died on his birthday, Dec. 5, 1998. He was born in Claymont, Del., to William Wallace and Helen Mae Wiley DeVore. He graduated from high school in Claymont, after which he attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Ind. During World War II, Dr. DeVore served 2 1/2 years overseas in the U.S. Army as director of laboratory diagnosis in a 1,000-bed hospital in Fort Guilick, Panama, and after returning to the States, he served in the typhoid research unit of Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C., for another 18 months. After being discharged from the Army, Dr. DeVore accepted a position with the faculty of Lincoln Chiropractic College. Upon leaving that post, he and his wife, also a chiropractor, opened an office in Ironton, Mo., in February 1951. He practiced almost 42 years before he suffered a stroke; however, he continued to write for the profession. His many activities included the First Presbyterian Church, Arcadia Valley Bible Camp (later DAY-Spring Bible Camp,) the Rotary Club and town planning committees and projects. Dr. DeVore also was chairman of the Missouri State Chiropractic Research Committee from 1972 until 1986 and served on the Board of Trustees of Logan Chiropractic College for 12 years, during which he served as faculty advisor. The American Chiropractic Association published Healthways, a monthly publication featuring chiropractic case histories and techniques written and illlustrated by Dr. DeVore. Surviving him are his wife, Dr. Frances Nicolaides DeVore of Arcadia; four children. Elaine DeVore Hogan of Bismarck, Dr. Jeffrey W. Mr. Marra retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone in 1991 after 29 years service. He then joined his wife in running the family farm. Madole Hees. On Oct. 31, 1942, she was married in Oklahoma to Guy W. Kidwell, who died in 1982. Mrs. Kidwell worked as a seamstress in the pants factories in Tipton and Eldon. Surviving are a daughter, Jean Koebel of Olean; two brothers, Billy Hees of Versailles and Shirley Hees of Eldon; two grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sister-in-laws, Gladys Hees of Barnett and Icel Kidwell of Eldon. On March 16, 1954, he was married in Joliet, Ill., to Marjorie Moore, who survives at the home. Mr. Harris served in the U.S. Air Force and was a self-employed home improvement contractor. He was born April 27, 1938, in Ulman to Logan Hadley and Eula Sarah Shepherd Stone. His parents, who preceded him in death, also had been residents of Eldon. In 1967, Mr. Stone married Karen Wilson, who survives at the home. Mr. Stone was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was employed with Yellow Freight as a truck driver for 22 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Ulman Christian Church. Also surviving him are three daughters, Starla Buechter of Iberia, Shona Watson of Lincoln, Neb., and Tosha Edwards of Dunning, Neb.; a son, David Jones of Jefferson City; two stepsons, Mark Williams of Kansas and Mike Williams of Lincoln, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred Eads of Jefferson City and Margaret Morris of Columbia. She was born May 28, 1903, in Hawkeye to Thomas and Martha Shelton Duncan. On June 5, 1945, she was married in Rolla to Barney Alexander, who died Jan. 14, 1982. Mrs. Alexander attended Cross Elementary School, the Iberia Academy and Drury College in Springfield. She taught at Brown and Barton schools near Iberia and was a member of the Iberia Church of Christ. She worked for Montgomery Ward in Kansas City and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Mrs. Alexander is survived by three sisters, Edith Willis and Nellie Ponder, both of Iberia, and Hazel Schulte of Eldon; and two nieces. On Oct. 11, 1941, she was married in Marion, Ark., to Clifford E. Simmons, who died Aug. 27, 1990. Mrs. Simmons and her husband owned and operated several businesses in Central Missouri, including Eldon Steel Products, Eldon Roller Skating Rink, Simmons Supply and Manufacturing, Readygas Propane Service, Inc., and Simmons Farms. She was a member of several organizations, including Evening Euterpean Club, Oasis Extension Club, the Miller County Historial Society, the Greater Lake Area Arts Council, the Eldon Chamber of Commerce, Winning Women, the Women's Birthday Club, the Missouri Limousin Association and the North American Limousin Foundation. She was a graduate of White Haven High School in Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. Simmons was a memberof the Eldon First Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are two sons, C. E. On April 22, 1933, she was married in Iowa to Marshall Eugene Humphreys II, who died March 10, 1972. Mrs. Humphreys was a graduate of Trenton High School. She and Dr. Humphreys moved to Tuscumbia from Kirksville in 1937. She was a member of the Tuscumbia Christian Church. Patti Jean Warrington Patti Jean Warrington, 86, of Lebanon died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Balanced Care North in Lebanon. She was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Eldridge. On Sept. 28, 1932, she was married to Theodore Earl Warrington, who died March 4, 1993. Mrs. Warrington was reared in the Lebanon area and was a graduate of Lebanon High School. She lived most of her life in Lebanon except during World War II when her husband worked in the shipyards at Long Beach, Calif. Surviving her are a daughter, Thea Elizabeth Dodge of Iberia and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lebanon Cemetery. Rev. James Meredith officiated. Wright, 70, formerly of Jefferson City died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Fountainbleau Lodge in Cape Girardeau. He was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Charleston to Jacob Merle and Anna Elizabeth Essary Wright. On Aug. 16, 1984, he was married to Pyllis Jeffries, who survives in Jefferson City. Mr. Wright retired from the U.S. Army in 1973 after serving 27 years. He served in Indochina, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was then employed with the Missouri Department of Corrections in Jefferson City until 1986, when he transferred to Farmington where he worked until retiring in 1998. He was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church in Charleston , the Eagles Club in Jefferson City and the Elks Lodge and VFW Post in Farmington. Also surviving him are five sons, Terry McCameron of St. Louis, Thomas S. Wright Jr. of Richland, Richard Wright and Ronald Wright, both of Mexico, and Sgt. Scott Wright of Augusta, Ga.; two daughters, Sherry Thomson of Mexico and Rhonda Eitel of Hannibal; three brothers, Jacob "Jack" Wright of Chaffee, Charles Wright of Searcy, Ark., and William "Bill" Wright of Brentwood; two sisters, Peggy Berbling of Topeka, Kan., and Pat Frayser of Cape Girardeau; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Leonard Wood provided military honors at the service. Shirley VanDyke Shirley VanDyke, 58, of Eldon died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000. She was born Jan. 28, 1942, in Miller County to John W. and Delphia B. Settles Schupp. On Sept. 5, 1964, she was married at Eldon to Earl E. VanDyke, who survives at the home. Mrs. VanDyke was a certified medical technician and was employed by Lee House in Eldon. Also surviving her are a daughter, Denise VanDyke of Eldon; her mother, Delphia B. Schupp of the home; a stepson, David Earl VanDyke of Brumley; a stepdaughter, Valerie Washam of Brookfield; five sisters; a brother; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was born Dec. 28, 1946, in Champaign, Ill., to Virgil and Etha Asher Broom. Her mother survives in St. Joseph, Ill. On March 12, 1966, she was married in St. Joseph, Ill., to Joseph W. Snyder, who survives at the home. Mrs. Snyder worked on the farm with her husband. She also is survived by three sons, Jesse Snyder and Robert Snyder, both of Ulman, and Jason Snyder of Brumley; three sisters, Virginia Colclasure of Jarrettsville, Md., Marjorie Taylor of St. Joseph, Ill., and Kathy Esworthy of London, England; and four grandchildren. He was born June 28, 1999, in Columbia to Richard Finigan and Tiffany Stephens. His father survives in Jefferson City and his mother survives in St. Thomas. Gavin was baptized as a Catholic on June 28, 1999. Lena Mae Phillips Lena Mae Phillips, 81, of Tuscumbia died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Miller County Care Center at Tuscumbia. She was born Aug. 31, 1918, in Brumley to William Elisha and Eliza Jane Robinett Ash. On Oct. 23, 1935, she was married in Brumley to Arthur L. Phillips, who died Aug. 19, 1992. Mrs. Phillips worked for O & R Poultry Company in Tuscumbia and later for Pryor Novelty Company in Tuscumbia until her retirement. She was a member of the Rodden Church of Christ near Brumley. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Turner and Ellen Horton, both of Tuscumbia; three brothers, S. B. Ash and Bert Ash, both of Brumley, and Farris Ash of Tuscumbia; a sister, Thelma Albertson of Tuscumbia; seven grandchldren; and three great-grandchildren. Woodrow Townsend 'Woodie' Winborn Woodrow Townsend "Woodie" Winborn, 83, of Waynesville died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Life Care Center in Waynesville. He was born March 3, 1916, in St. Joseph to Bert Ellsworth and Liddie May Cain Winborn. On Sept. 28, 1935, he was married in St. Joseph to Helen Virginia Johnson, who survives. Mr. Winborn joined the U.S. Army in December 1942. He served in Normandy, Central Europe, the Rhineland and Northern France and received four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, three Overseas Bars, the Rifleman's Badge, the Driver's Badge and a Distinguished Unit Badge for those campaigns. He was discharged as a corporal Oct. 19, 1945. He worked at the St. Joseph Pearl Brewing Company before purchasing a Skelly service station. He later obtained his real estate license and was a realtor in the Pulaski County area for many years. He was a member of the Westside Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 375, AF & AM, both in Waynesville, and the MOILA Temple Shrine in St. Joseph. In addition to his wife, Mr. Winborn is survived by his children, Alma and Don Tritten of Waynesville and Woody Winborn and Carol Vincent of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and a number of great-greadchildren: Susan and George Schulte and their children, Mendy, Nathan and Kyle Purdome; David and Liz Tritten and their children, Jason, Elise and Noelle; Beth and Rick Wright and their sons, Erick and Jacob; Kris and Herschel Gaddy and their children, Jake and Michaela; Kim Atwood and David Walker and her children, Kourtney and Kaitlyn Atwood; Tiffany and David Sunderland and her children, Whitney, Cameron and Brandon Benderman; and Todd Winborn and Maureen McMurry. Athy, 66, of Jefferson City died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. She was born Oct. 7, 1933, in Boone County to Robert B. and Mary F. Grant Athy. Her mother, Mary Nall, survives in Columbia. Miss Athy was director of the former Thomas Jefferson Regional Library System for 30 years. She assisted in forming the Heartland Regional Library System for Miller and Maries counties and was a consultant for the district until the time of her death. DeGraffenreid, 77, of Brumley died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at University Hospital in Columbia. She was born May 19, 1922, in Hays, Kan., to Marshal and Roxie Hamm Ormord. She was married Nov. 14, 1942, in Tuscumbia to John R. DeGraffenreid, who survives at the home. Mrs. DeGraffenreid was a member of the Riverview Baptist Church in Osage Beach and was a musician at the church for more than 40 years. In addition to her husband, Mrs. DeGraffenreid is survived by a son, David J. DeGraffenreid of Brumley; a daughter, Cathy DeGraffenreid of Brumley; a sister, Jean Hefton of Kansas City, Kan.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
