Lawrence Alton Jarboe Lawrence Alton Jarboe, age 79, of Holliday, passed away Friday, November 11, 2005, at approximately 2:05 a.m. at his home near Woodlawn. Lawrence was born in rural Shelby County on March 21, 1926, the son of Lawrence and Eda Wood Jarboe. Lawrence “Bud” married Roberta Louise Woods on February 25, 1950, at the St Mary’s Catholic Church rectory in Shelbina. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children: Diane Adele Steck and husband Mark of Battlefield, Mo; Gregory Lawrence Jarboe of Hannibal, Christopher Louis Jarboe and wife Kay of Hols Summit, Rochelle Yvonne Sadler and husband Ed of Glenwood Springs, CO; Angela Renee Hendey and husband Brian of Edmond, OK; and Alicia Joan Roling and husband Brian of Taos, MO; grandchildren: Shawn and Eric Meinert, Tricia Steck, Johnathon and Holly Jarboe, Jennifer Ferguson and husband Chris, Jessica Moseley, Joshua Wood, Brooke Roling, Nicholas and J.B. Sadler and Lindsay Roling; great-grandchildren: Christopher and Kayla Ferguson. He is also survived by: sister Yvonne Magruder, of Irvine, CA; one brother, Franklin Jarboe of Vandalia; sisters-in-law: Beatrice Allen of Fayetteville, AR; Ferne Stacky, of Kingsburg, CA; and Ione Shoemaker, of San Luis Obispo, CA; and his special “adopted” granddaughter, Emily Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Aloa Coffman. He graduated from Clarence High School in 1944 after which he took a Department of Defense job in Kansas City. Joining the Navy on January 5, 1946, he was assigned to the Seabees and participated in the first peacetime nuclear weapons test series called “Operation Crossroads” conducted at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1946. Following his discharge in October 1947, he continued in the family tradition of farming in Shelby County. Following his marriage, he and Roberta moved to their farm near Woodlawn in Monroe County where he lived the rest of his life and actively farmed 50 of those years. They were awarded the District Balance Farming Award in 1965. Amid the demands of farming, he continued his love of cars, his CB radio hobby and sharing the interests and activities of the three generations of his family. Through example, he instilled the value of hard work and self-reliance, responsibilities, both in God and love of Country. Visitation was on Monday, November 14, 2005, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with Prayer Service from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral home in Clarence, Mo. Funeral services and Mass was on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shelbina. Father Mike Murphy officiated. Burial was at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Shelbina. Memorials may be made to the health Department of Monroe County Hospice, and St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Shelbina.
