Paris, Mo., June 16, 1929 William Fitzhugh Thornton Buckner, 101 years old, oldest and believed to have been next to the last surviving veteran of the Mexican War, died at his home here today. Buckner died unexpectedly soon after he arose at 6 o’clock a. m. today. Although he had been in retirement since 1912, the aged veteran was able to be out and around his home town most of the time. He had walked down town only last Friday. He celebrated his 101st birthday anniversary last January 27. Buckner was a Paris banker from 1871 until 1912. He served through the Mexican War and spent virtually all of the remainder of his life here. Funeral services for the veteran will be held at his home here Tuesday morning, with burial here. He is survived by five daughters.
