Roy W. Staehely
Roy William Staehely, 80, a leading dairy farmer of Oregon, died while resting in a rocker at his farm home Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997. He was a third-generation resident of the Central Point area, the oldest son of William and Clara Ortlieb Staehely and grandson of August and Martha Staehely.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 4, at Oregon City First Baptist Church. Burial was in Zion Memorial Park in Canby.
Memorials are suggested to the church which he had served as moderator and in many official capacities.
Staehely was born at his parents' home Oct. 6, 1916, and attended Twilight School on South End Road. In 1918, after the family moved to the former Samuel Brown farm on Beaver Creek, he attended the Brown School at Central Point. He was a 1933 graduate of Canby Union High School.
His life as a dairy farmer began early. He and his brother, Arthur, became partners in the Guernsey dairy in 1955. He had been active in the Oregon Dairy Association and in Guernsey cattle clubs. The dairy farm is now operated by Arthur Staehely and son, Paul.
Three sons and their wives survive: Richard and Carol of Milwaukie, Donald and Shirleen of Canby, and Dennis and Cheri of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Evelyn Davis of Bellevue, Wash., his brother, Arthur, on the home farm; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, Martha, whom he married in 1940, died Jan. 14, 1986.

Martha M. Krupicka
Martha Mary Krupicka, of Aurora, died Oct. 2, 1997, at Benedictine Care Center in Mount Angel of natural causes. Before moving to the care center she had lived on the family's Butteville farm for 65 years.
She was born Dec. 29, 1911, at Lidgerwood, N.D., and came to Oregon with her parents in 1924, living in the Silverton and Woodburn areas. After her marriage in 1929, she moved to the Butteville area.
She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Woodburn where she sang in the choir for many years. She was a Marion County Home Extension leader, 4-H cooking club leader, a member of the Butteville PTA, Butteville Election Board and volunteered with the Civil Air Defense.
Besides singing, she enjoyed reading, oil painting, gardening and her family.
She is survived by her son, Edward, of Aurora; daughters, Angela Krupicka of Salem and Rose Nielsen of Rickreall; brothers, Julius Pokorny of Culver, Robert Pokorny of Woodburn, Clifton Pokorny, Leo Pokorny, Dan Pokorny and Edwin Pokorny, all of Salem; sisters, Elvina Brown of Hubbard and Viola McKay of St. Paul; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Peter, died Feb. 22, 1982.
Funeral Mass was held Oct. 4, at St. Luke's Catholic Church with burial in St. Luke's Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to Benedictine Nursing Center at Mount Angel.

Robert Kidwell
Robert Hugh Kidwell died at his Canby home Oct. 1, 1997. He was 79.
Kidwell was born June 29, 1918, in Weatherford, Texas. He moved to Granite, Okla., as a young boy. In 1939, he married Maribel McLeod and moved to Oregon. They resided in Klamath Falls for 23 years and Cottage Grove for 11 years and have lived in Canby since 1974.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician's mate 1st class aboard the U.S.S. Bache in the South Pacific. He fought in the battles at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where his ship was hit by an enemy suicide plane.
After the war, he worked as an electrician in the lumber industry. In 1965, he became a union representative for the International Woodworkers of America. He was the IWA's 1st vice president for the Western States Regional Council III in Gladstone when he suffered a stroke in 1980 forcing him to retire.
Since his stroke, he enjoyed the company of fellow senior citizens at the Canby Adult Center. He frequently was seen riding around town on his red electric cart.
He is survived by his wife, Maribel; daughter, Kaye Kidwell Graziano of San Francisco; granddaughter, Kelly Kidwell Collazo, and great grandson, Roman Alexander Collazo of Whittier, Calif.; sisters, Leona Spruce of McAlester, Okla., Elsie Hamer and Dorothy Garner of Salt Lake City, Utah; and brothers, Frank of Memphis, Tenn., and Glandon of Oakland, Calif. 
Mercedes Ramirez-Flores
Mercedes Florinda Ramirez-Flores died Sept. 29 in an automobile accident near Canby. She was 15.
Mercedes was born Aug. 16, 1982 to Reveriano and Carmen Ramirez-Flores in San Mateo, Mexico. She moved with her family to Canby in 1991. Mercedes attended Trost Elementary School, Ackerman Middle School and Canby High School, and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Funeral services for Mercedes were held Sunday afternoon at the Canby Funeral Chapel. Her casket was sent Monday to her hometown for burial.
She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Isaias of Canby, and Gerardo of San Mateo; a sister, Anaberta, of Canby; grandmothers, Amalia Zurita of California, and Beatriz Enriquez of San Mateo.

Howard W. Moehnke 
Howard Weslyn Moehnke, 84, of Canby, died June 7, 1998, at his home of cancer-related complications.
Memorial services were held June 10, at Canby Funeral Chapel. Private burial was at Mountain View Cemetery in Oregon City.
Mr. Moehnke was born Oct. 23, 1913, in West Linn. He was a cable rigger specialist for logging and shipping operations for Albert Bernett Towing and Alaska Steel before his 1976 retirement.
He was a member of Willamette Methodist Church in West Linn. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; sons, Weslyn of Vancouver, Wash., Alan of Dundee and Michael of Oregon City; daughters, Dorothy Tomlin of Sandy, Sharon Schmidt of Hubbard and Melissa Ainsworth-Damewood of Canby; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Brim. 

Dude Robert Rice 
A memorial service will be held for Dude Robert Rice at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 1998, at the Colton High School gymnasium, with a potluck immediately following in the adjoining multipurpose room. Rice, 74, died June 6, following open heart surgery.
He was born in Wellington, Colo., on Oct. 8, 1923, to Arthur and Ollie Rice. He grew up and attended schools in Ault, Colo.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II action, he served as a gunners mate on the aircraft carrier USS Kasaan Bay. He also became a U.S. Navy Golden Gloves boxing champion.
He married Beverly Cornay on Nov. 27, 1948, and in 1956 they moved to Colton where they operated the Lutheran Pioneer Homes for 31 years until it was sold in 1987.
He was an active member of the community, served on numerous boards and committees and was a strong advocate for school and athletic programs. He was an instructor in karate, weight training and conditioning, and coached many teams.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Colton; two children and their families, Rex, Merry, Sarah and Jacob Rice of Colton and Gail, Pete, Rebecca and Mitchell Wille of Oregon City; a sister, Ruth Allison of Ault, Colo.; a brother, Cotton of Plainsfield, Conn.; and numerous relatives. 

Hildred D. Mitchell 
Former Canby resident Hildred D. Mitchell, 91, died June 9, 1998, in Dallas. Funeral services were held June 13, in Riverview Abbey Mausoleum Chapel in Portland.
Mrs. Mitchell was born May 1, 1907, in Cimarron County, Okla., the daughter of William and Martha Osborne Clampitt. She grew up and graduated from Elkhart High School in Elkhart, Kan.
She married Ellis J. Mitchell in 1931, and they moved to Canby in 1940. She worked with the family business, Mitchell Farm Equipment Co., and retired from Evans Accounting Service as an accounting assistant in 1968. She moved to the Dallas Retirement Village in 1991.
She was a member of the Canby Christian Church and belonged to Laurel Chapter 113, Order of the Eastern Star in Canby. 
She is survived by her son, Robert, of Dallas; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her husband preceded her in death in 1973.

Dorothy Williams 
Funeral services for Canby resident Dorothy Ruth Williams were held June 16, 1998, at the Canby Alliance Church. Burial followed at Lookingglass Cemetery in Roseburg.
Mrs. Williams died June 12, at her Canby home at the age of 85.
She was born July 8, 1912, in Clarion, Iowa, the sixth child of Edward and Maude Hutchinson. She graduated from high school there and on March 27, 1932, married James C. Williams Sr. at Des Moines. She had a special love for children, and for many years taught Sunday school and 4-H, and also Home Extension sewing.
Survivors include her son, James C. Jr. of Canby; three grandsons, Russell, Drew and Kenneth; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, and a daughter, Winifred, in 1989. 

Astrid Johnson 
Born Aug. 27, 1915, near Saco, Mont., Astrid E. Johnson died June 9, 1998, at her Wilsonville home. She was 82.
Funeral services were held June 13, at Canby Funeral Chapel with burial following at Aurora Community Cemetery.
Prior to World War II, Mrs. Johnson moved to Sweden for a time, then returned to the U.S. and lived in Portland before returning to Montana. She moved to California in 1959, where she lived for 18 years. She had lived in Wilsonville since 1985.
Survivors include three grandchildren; a sister, Edna Fahlgren of Wilsonville; and a brother, Clarence Hjort of Orland, Calif. Her husband, Hans, and a son, Ron, preceded her in death.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Community of Hope Lutheran Church or the Tuality Valley Open Bible Church, both in Wilsonville. 

Vera S. Drell
Vera S. Drell, a longtime Aurora resident, died Sept. 17, 1999, at the age of 85. 
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Aurora Community Cemetery. 
Mrs. Drell was born July 1, 1914, in North Dakota and raised in Robbinsdale, Minn. She moved with her family to Aurora in 1948, and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. 
Survivors are her husband, John, of Aurora; daughters, Virginia Kribs of Bend and Kathleen Burgess of Aurora; son, John of Portland; granddaughter Paula Snider of LaPine and grandson Erik of Portland. 

Elva G. Morrison 
Graveside services were held Sept. 26, 1999, at Fairview Cemetery in Gates for Aurora homemaker Elva Morrison. 
Born May 20, 1918, in Lowell, Ark., she died Sept. 23, 1999, in Aurora. She was 81. 
She had lived in Mill City and Roseburg before moving to Aurora 31 years ago. 
Politically active, Mrs. Morrison also enjoyed handicrafts, gardening and her family. She was a member of the Shady Dell Steamers, a steam train club. 
She is survived by her husband, John, of Aurora; daughter, Carol Elizabeth, of Estacada; and a sister, Ruby Hutchinson of Salem. A granddaughter, Jacqueline Anderson preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1998. 

Medora `Dot' Hutchins 
Medora “Dot” E. Hutchins, 81, who died Sept. 27, 1999, at Rose Linn Care Center in West Linn, will be interred next to her husband, Jack, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. 
She was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Faye, Okla., the daughter of Jack and Alice Long. She married Jack Hutchins in October 1952, in Vancouver, Wash. She had lived in Beavercreek, Aurora, Marquam and Canby. 
Mrs. Hutchins enjoyed crocheting, gardening and fishing. 
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Susan Nyberg of Gresham; sisters-in-law Rita Schmeiser of Canby and Patricia Kulyk of Lone Butte, B.C.; and brothers-in-law James L. of Portland and Bill of Gladstone. Her husband died Dec. 30, 1990. 
Contributions may be made to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. 

Karsten M. Martinson 
Norweigan-born Karsten Medal Martison of Sequim, Wash., died in Crestwood Convalescent Center in Port Angeles on Sept. 17, 1999. He was 101. 
He was born Sept. 13, 1898, in Bergen, Norway, to Andrew and Carrie (Sather) Martinson. When he was 5, he came with his family to America where he made his home in Nebraska and Kansas until 1936. 
About 1923, he married Ebba Sorenson in Nebraska; she died April 24, 1991. 
After moving his family to Yoder, Mr. Martinson continued farming until he retired to Canby. 
As a young man, he was a horse trader and a farmer. As a retiree, he made horse and wagon yard ornaments and gardened. 
In 1987, the Martinsons moved to California to live with their daughter. In March 1999, the family relocated to Sequim. 
He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 
Survivors include his daughter, Violet Ryan of Sequim; brother, Herman of Vancouver, Wash.; granddaughters, Dianna Husbands of Canby, Sheilla Shrock of Joyce, Wash., and Theresa Tishman of La Grande; and grandsons, Verle and Gary Martinson, both of Elgin. 
Private memorial services were held with burial in Canyon Country, Calif.

Robert F. Lewis
Robert F. Lewis, a longtime resident of Clackamas County, died Oct. 26, 1999, in Tualatin. His death, as a result of heart disease, came at age 74.
At his request, no services will be held.
Mr. Lewis was born Feb. 24, 1925. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He retired as corporate director of employee relations for Publishers Paper Co. in 1981, after 16 years of service.
The family suggests remembrances to the Christy School of Marylhurst in his memory. Mr. Lewis was an honorary board member of Christy School, and also was named as the 1989 recipient of the Christy Medallion Award. He served as president of the board of directors from July 1971 through April 1974. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis have continued to provide support to the school and the special children it serves.

Richard "Dick" Hammack
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church east of Mount Angel for Richard “Dick” Milton Hammack, a 26-year-resident of Woodburn. He died Oct. 26, 1999, at his cabin near Hardman, Ore., at the age of 60.
He was born June 25, 1939, in Coquille and had graduated from Redmond High School in 1957, then attended Concordia College.
He had worked for 24 years at Les Schwab Tire Centers in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Following his retirement in 1989, he owned and operated C.H. Belle Nursery in Gresham.
He also served various community and religious organizations through the years, most recently as a lay minister at Trinity Lutheran. He had served as a lay minister at Hope Lutheran Church in Woodburn, and since 1994 served on the Hispanic Ministries Board of the Lutheran Church.
He had served in the Army Reserves and Oregon National Guard.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, music, his cabin and his dog, Belle.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kathleen; sons, Terry R. of Aloha, Tim M. of Portland and Tom W. of Mount Angel; daughter, Tamara J. Hammack-Ryan of Woodburn; his mother, Dona Hammack of Heppner; brothers, Jim of Redmond, John of Prineville and Jack of Sisters; sisters, Patricia Hall and Denise Hammack, both of Redmond; five grandchildren and several aunts and uncles.
Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the church preschool program or the American Diabetes Association.

Cheryl A. Cruikshank
Cheryl Ann Cruikshank, 32, of Portland was found dead in her Portland home on April 4, 2000. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Born Nov. 17, 1967, in South Laguna Beach, Calif., she had attended Canby schools. She had been employed at the T-N-T Market for two years before moving to Portland. She had most recently worked for Timberline Dodge, and before that for AAA Appliance.
She loved animals and flowers, especially her roses. Survivors include her parents, Richard and Betty Cruikshank of Canby; sisters, Kristi Wilson of Canby and Carrie J. Edmonds of Cougar, Wash.; grandmother Alma Haines of Canby; four nieces and two nephews. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Oregon Humane Society. Kenneth F. Hostetler
Kenneth F. Hostetler died April 10, 2000, at age 79. A private graveside service was held in Mountain View Cemetery in Oregon City.
Mr. Hostetler was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Needy, and was raised in Oregon City. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Oregon City High School and was a carpenter for Kruegers Lumber for about 20 years.
He was a deckhand for Western Transportation for 12 years before his retirement in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Marian, whom he married in 1941; a son, Albert; daughter, Janet Davidson; sister, Marilyn Howard; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances to the Salvation Army. Arrangements are by Canby Funeral Chapel.

Willma Elkins
A Canby resident since 1972, Willma D. Elkins, 89, died April 17, 2000, at a local care center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at Canby Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Elkins was born June 11, 1910, in Molalla, the daughter of Victor and Ida Dunton. She attended Molalla schools. She married Pphaen F. Sayre Sr. in 1936, and he died in 1971. She then married Robert Elkins in 1973. He also preceded her in death in 1981.
She was a member of the American Legion, the Rebekah Lodge, a past member of the Aurora Presbyterian Church and was active in Canby Adult Center activities. 
Survivors are a son, Pphaen Jr. of Portland; a sister, Mildred Millsap of Eugene; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lowell Sayre, in 1998.

Julia S. Rand
Julia Susanna Rand, of Molalla, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Willamette Falls Hospital. She was 92.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at Molalla Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Rand was born May 22, 1908, in Durand, Wis., the daughter of Lawrence and Mary Goss. She married John S. Rand on Feb. 7, 1931, in Rochester, Minn., and he preceded her in death in June 1976.
A schoolteacher, she taught in a one-room school in Wisconsin. She also had worked for a telephone company and as a postal worker in Canby, Calif. She moved to the Molalla area in 1968.
An active volunteer in the Molalla community, she volunteered at the library, senior center and various other places. She had been named Molalla's Volunteer of the Year in the past.
She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and growing roses, as well as traveling. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Molalla.
Survivors include a son, Douglas of Oregon City; a brother, James Goss of Peptone, Wis.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family requests contributions to her church in lieu of flowers.

Warren Cox
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at Riverview Cemetery in Portland for Warren D. Cox, 72.
He died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at his Canby home.
He was born Dec. 12, 1927, at Falls City, Neb. He served as a gunner's mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1943 to 1947.
He worked as a millwright and later a maintenance supervisor at Publishers mill for 33 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the Oregon City Elks Club and Canby American Legion Post 122.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sue of Canby; sons, Terry and Richard, both of Portland, Douglas of Chandler, Ariz., and Clay of Canby; a brother, E.L. "Monte" of Bellevue, Neb.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or a favorite charity.

Ruth Roley-Fenton
Funeral services have been held in Portland for Ruth Roley-Fenton of Molson, Wash. Born April 19, 1914, in Aberdeen, Wash., she died May 28, 2000, in Molson, Wash.
She had been a homemaker and employee of Meier & Frank Co. until her retirement in 1974. 
She was a member of Canby United Methodist Church and the Grange. 
She leaves daughters, Sharlene Sheahon of Aberdeen, Wash., and Elaine Kloppel of Seattle; sons, Wallace F. Fenton, of Maupin and Dale Roley of Twin Falls, Idaho; two brothers and two sisters; and 15 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Pete Feller
CANBY - A brain tumor claimed the life of 51-year-old Canby businessman Pete Feller on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000. The longtime owner/operator of Canby Ford, he died at his home in Donald.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Canby Fine Arts Center on the Canby High School campus. Private graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Butteville Cemetery.
Feller was born March 4, 1949, in Oregon City to Ernest and Violet Fosheim Feller. He graduated from North Marion High School in 1967, and the University of Oregon in 1971.
Following his graduation he began his career at Canby Ford. He also operated the family farm that his great-grandparents began in the Donald area. He was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife, Annette, whom he married in 1993; brothers, Doug of Sherwood and Jeff of Aurora; his mother, Violet Feller of Canby; and several nieces and nephews. His father preceded him in death in 1984.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hope Village or Willamette Falls Hospice.

John Griffin
Molalla resident John H. Griffin, 75, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at Mt. View Rehabilitation Center in Oregon City.
A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
Mr. Griffin was born March 23, 1925, in Seattle. He married Emogene Pierce in February 1951.
They moved to Oregon 25 years ago, and in Molalla the past 10 years. He was a truck driver in construction for more than 50 years.
Following his retirement he enjoyed maintaining his yard and home, and riding motorcycles. He was a member of the Canby American Legion Post 122.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Lynn of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Joy Chaffey of Aurora; a sister, Joy Morris of Hemet, Calif.; a brother, Ben, of Wrangle, Alaska; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Molalla Funeral Chapel is in care of arrangements.

Creta Schneider
Creta Helen Schneider, 86, of Canby, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in a local nursing home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Belle Passi Mausoleum Chapel in Woodburn.
Born Dec. 26, 1914, in La Grande, her maiden name was Judd. She lived in the Canby and Molalla areas most of her life.
She retired from MacLaren School in Woodburn following 15 years employment.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Molalla.
She is survived by her daughters, Arleta Lucht of Newport and Gloria Cornelius of Salem; a sister, Naomi White of Canby; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert 'Bob' Hanson
CANBY - Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Canby for Robert "Bob" M. Hanson, 53. He died at his home Oct. 3, 2000, from cancer.
Born June 26, 1947, in Germany, he was raised there until age 16. He graduated from high school in Virginia and attended college for two years. A U.S. Army veteran, he had played semi-pro soccer for 14 years.
During his career he gave up accounting and turned to construction, where he was considered a fine craftsman in woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie, of Canby; a daughter, Traci Hanson of Clackamas; a son, Kurt, of Seattle; and a half-brother and half-sister, Ron Lester and Peggy Kemp, both of England.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Sunnyside Little Chapel of the Chimes is in care of arrangements.

Lois Ainsworth
Funeral services for Lois Ainsworth of Woodburn, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at North Marion Baptist Church in Aurora.
She died Monday, Oct. 9, at the age of 84.

Walter L. Cobb Jr.
Former resident of several Clackamas County cities, Walter Lee Cobb Jr., died Dec. 1, 2000, in Coos Bay where he lived in retirement. He was 76.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Molalla Christian Church, with interment following at Mt. View Cemetery in Oregon City.
Mr. Cobb was born March 24, 1924, in Portland. He was raised and educated in Oregon City and Molalla. He began work at the Hawley Paper Mill in Oregon City in 1940, and his job was held while he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was the recipient of the Silver Star on May 16, 1945, after crawling through heavy enemy fire to rescue a wounded man.
He received the award 55 years later in a special ceremony in September 2000. Following the war he returned to the Oregon City mill, which had become Publishers Paper Mill, and worked there until Smurfit Newsprint purchased it. He and his wife, the former Sylvia L. Maben, made their home in Oregon City, Canby, Molalla and Oregon City before he retired in 1983.
Known for his keen sense of humor, he enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors, playing with his grandchildren, fishing and collecting miniature toy cars.
He is survived by his wife, of Coos Bay; sons and daughters-in-law, Walter III and Judy of Molalla, Richard and Sue of Aurora and Steven and Carol of Denton, Texas; a sister, Shirley Graham of Oregon City; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A brother and three sisters preceded him in death.

William J. Willbroad
Memorial graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Mt. View Cemetery in Oregon City for William J. Willbroad, 87.
Born Nov. 12, 1913, in Monitor, he died Nov. 30, 2000, in Gresham. A farmer, he had raised turkeys, seed and trees.
He was the first tree and turkey farmer in Clackamas County, and was Oregon's top seed farmer for several years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Surviving are his wife, the former Doris Hattan; sons, Loren of Molalla and Willard A. of Boring; daughters, Marlene Turner of Portland and Doreen Rumgay of Oregon City; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Brothers Albert, Eugene, Tom, and Louis and a sister, Ethel Grove, preceded him in death.

Alvin Thompson
Born in the Needy district on March 3, 1938, Alvin Thompson died of cancer on Dec. 2, 2000, in Woodburn. He was 62.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn, with interment at Rock Creek Cemetery near Needy.
Thompson attended Ninety-One Grade School and graduated from Canby High School in 1956. He lived in Molalla, Rural Dell and Mulino before moving to Woodburn in 1971.
He was a logger for Crown Zellerbach in Molalla, then worked for Weyerhaeuser before beginning work for Blue Mountain Co., from which he retired after 20 years.
A talented landscaper and yard maintenance person, he owned Al's Tree Service after his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Woodburn; his mother, Freada Thompson of Molalla; sons, Alan of Port Angeles, Wash., Roger of Monitor, Jerome of Silverton and Bruce of Mt. Angel; brothers, Don of Omga, Minn., and Bill of Mitchell; sisters, Caroline Schoenborn of Mulino, Dolores Thompson of Arizona, Nola Lingel of Canby and Gloria Hordichok of Molalla and 12 grandchildren.

Robert E. Lee
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Canby Alliance Church for Canby resident Robert E. Lee, 59.
He died Nov. 29, 2000, of a heart attack at his home outside Canby. He was born Jan. 29, 1941, in Germantown, Ohio, the son of Ruth and Calvin Lee. He graduated from high school in Tipp City, Ohio, then served eight years in the U.S. Air Force.
He and his wife moved to Oregon in 1972, and have lived in the Canby area for 24 years. He was currently employed as a process engineer at Johnson Controls Battery Group, where he had worked the past 23 years.
He was a member of Stafford Baptist Church, enjoyed photography and the outdoors, and was an avid golfer, inventor and a builder of spinning wheels and furniture.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Michele; sons and daughters-in-law Eric and Tamarah of Redmond, Wash., Nathan of Bend, and Bryan and Bethany of Anchorage; his mother, Ruth Lee of Tipp City, Ohio; a brother, Raymond of Tipp City; sisters, Delores Cruea and Veda Kinnison, both of Christianburg, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Violet M. Medearis
Violet Mae Medearis, 88, died Dec. 3, 2000, in a Gladstone nursing home.
She had lived in the Woodburn and Canby areas since 1931. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Aurora Community Cemetery. Mrs. Medearis was born Feb. 29, 1912, in Toronto, Kan.
She married her husband, Roy, on April 7, 1928, and he preceded her in death on May 2, 1997.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty Clow of Portland and Twila Erb of Eugene; son, Tony of Hood River; sister, Reba Price of Toronto, Kan.; brother, Jean Hobbs of Banning, Calif.; nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Alletta E. Haring
Alletta E. Haring, who spent the last several years in Canby and Chicago close to her family, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000.
Her sons, David and Jim Haring, their wives Karen and Yanan, nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, will remember her with love.
She was born Jan. 28, 1906, in northern North Dakota. She graduated from Carlton University and earned a master's degree in mathematics and astronomy from the University of Wisconsin.
She married Dr. Robert C. Haring on June 5, 1933, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1979. She was a longtime resident of Woodbridge, Conn.

Hugo C. Wildschut
Born in Vancouver, B.C. on March 22, 1912, Canby resident Hugo C. Wildschut died Jan. 24, 2001, in Portland, of congestive heart failure. He was 88.
He attended high school in Billings, Mont., then attended the University of Montana before earning a degree in forestry from the University of California at Berkeley.
He enjoyed a diverse career beginning with forestry work at Berkeley and research at Cutter Laboratories in Albany, Calif. He worked 25 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, then later was an inspector on the construction of Chief Joseph Dam while assigned to the Seattle office, and Green Peter Dam; field engineer for airfield runway construction in Peshawar and Lahore, Pakistan; airfield and port reconstruction at Lajes Air Base in the Azores; chief of construction at the Atlas Missile Base near Abilene, Texas, and Minuteman missile silos and control center at Minot, N.D.
Following his retirement, he worked as a field inspector for CH2M-Hill on building dock facilities for the Port of Portland, water pipeline construction for Bend, and a sewage system for Camas, Wash.
He also enjoyed working with computers, designed a subsurface heating system for nurseries, and worked on computerized environmental control systems for greenhouse application after his retirement.
He was a member of the Retired Army Corps of Engineers, Oregon Association of Nurserymen and the Civil Air Patrol. He also enjoyed playing the piano and organ, model trains, growing orchids, HAM radio, flying airplanes and his dogs.
A resident of Oregon since 1950, he first lived in Milwaukie.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Catherine; daughter, Jayne Oppliger of Monmouth; son, Terry of Portland; a grandson and two great-granddaughters.

Cathy Gale Jenkins, 42, of Canby, died Jan. 28, 2001, of heart complications following cancer treatment.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at New Life Foursquare Church in Canby with burial following at Zion Memorial Cemetery. She was born Dec. 2, 1958, in St. Joseph, Mo., and had lived in Portland 18 years before moving to Canby a year ago.
A loving wife and mother, she was a homemaker.
She was active in her church, and was known for her excellent singing voice. Surviving are her husband Tom, whom she married Dec. 16, 1984; sons, Andrew and Christian, all of Canby; mother, Katherine Cleary of Troy, Kan.; brothers, Jerry Cleary of Hiawatha, Kan., and Jack Cleary of Overland Park, Kan.; and mother-in-law Sandra D. Verl Jacobson
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Marquam United Methodist Church for Verl Embert Jacobson, 81.
He died Jan. 28, at Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin.
Mr. Jacobson was born May 25, 1919, on his family farm in Monitor. He married Lenore Thompson on Dec. 14, 1939, and they have lived on the family farm all his life. He grew hops and row crops until retiring at age 65.
In addition to his family, he enjoyed fishing and was also a champion trapshooter. He was a member of the Lone Elder Gun Club.
Surviving are his wife, Lenore, of Monitor; daughters, Donna Asboe of Canby and Verla Stetson of Marquam; sons, Larry of Gold Beach and Raymond of Monitor; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Lillian M. Bigbee
Former Canby resident Lillian Mae Bigbee died March 8, 2001, in Milwaukie. She was 90. She was born March 3, 1911, in Jeffers, Minn. She married John Bigbee in 1932, and they moved to Tacoma, Wash., in 1943, then to Portland in 1947. The lived in the Canby area for many years.
She had worked in the shipyards during World War II.
She is survived by a son, Larry, of Milwaukie; sisters, Mavis Matson of Fairmont, Minn., Vi Cazett of Lamberton, Minn., and Idell Biber of Tacoma, Wash.; a brother, Curly Roemer of Puallap, Wash.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Karen Graves. Funeral services were held Monday, March 12, at Green Crest Memorial Park in Sheridan.

Frank Lais
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Nov. 20, 2001, at Zion Mennonite Church near Hubbard for Frank Lais, 80.
Born Dec. 26, 1920, in Hubbard, he lived his entire lifetime in this area. He died from natural causes at an Oregon City hospital on Nov. 15.
Mr. Lais was a row crop farmer and charter member of the Farm Cannery Co-op at Stayton.
A member of the Mennonite church, he served as a conscientious objector during World War II at Belton, Mont., and at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Roseburg.
Survivors include his sons, Kenneth, Ray, Larry and Edwin, all of Canby; daughters, Sharon Moyer and Janice Lais, both of Portland, Shirley Martin of Canby, Susan Boshart of Shedd, Carol Kauffman of Scio and Eileen Springer of Minier, Ill.; sisters, Lilly Berkey, Dorothy Gingerich and Vera Garber, all of Hubbard, Ruth Zehr of Goshen, Ind., Marjorie Birky and Evelyn Birky, both of Kalispel, Mont.; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
His wife, Wanona, whom he married in 1943, died Oct. 9, 1983.

Patricia Kinsey
Former Canby resident Patricia Brady Holt Kinsey died Nov. 15, 2001, at a West Linn care center of heart disease and complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was 79.
Mrs. Kinsey was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Dr. Richard Brady and his wife Patti Atkisson. She lived her early years in Nebraska and Montana before moving to San Francisco, where she graduated from high school.
She married Garland L. Holt on Jan. 6, 1942, and following his return from World War II, they lived in California and Montana. She was a licensed practical nurse and worked at several Helena, Mont. hospitals, as well as for several physicians. She later moved to Sheridan, Wyo., to work in the Veterans Administration Hospital, then to Yakima, Wash., where she worked for several physicians as well as the American Red Cross.
At the age of 70, she earned honors at her graduation from Yakima Community College, obtaining a degree in alcohol and drug abuse counseling.
She moved to Canby in 1997.
She is survived by her son, Garland Holt Jr. of Midway City, Calif.; daughters Karen Sherrill, formerly of Canby and now of Vancouver, Wash., and Robin Butrick of Yakima, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Garland Holt, died Nov. 11, 1987; her companion Joe Mack Kinsey in 1998; and a son, David Holt, in June 2000.
Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association; or friends and relatives are asked to volunteer an hour at a local home for the elderly or stop and help someone in need.

Bonnie Brock Lee
Funeral services are planned in Medford on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, for former Canby resident Bonnie Deane (Brock) Lee. She died Nov. 16, at her home, at the age of 51.
Born May 18, 1946, in Oregon City, she was a 1963 graduate of Canby High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society.
She had lived in the Rogue Valley the past 21 years. She had been an office and clerical manager, working for Asante Health System for 20 years until her retirement this year.
She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Medford, and enjoyed singing in the church choir as well as with the Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus.
Surviving are her daughter, Abie Lee of Medford; son, Mike Lee, also of Medford; her mother, Bonnie Brock of Coos Bay; and brothers Bruce Brock of Coos Bay and Darwin Brock of Portland.
Her husband, Arthur, whom she married in 1975, preceded her in death in September.

Paul Delamarter
Paul Delamarter, 89, of Canby died of natural causes Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at his Canby home.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at the Aurora Presbyterian Church. Private inurnment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Mr. Delamarter was born Dec. 11, 1912, at Forgan, Okla. He attended college at Seattle Pacific and Oregon State Normal School.
He married Eleanor Strong on June 30, 1940, and she survives.
He owned and operated a shoe store in Sandpoint, Idaho, for several years. He also was an appraiser for the Bonner County Appraiser's Office. He moved to Canby in 1978, where he enjoyed raising cattle.
He was a veteran of U.S. Army service in World War II and during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sandpoint and the Aurora Presbyterian Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, Ralph of Bend and Frank of Sandpoint; daughters, Laura Gray of Draper, Utah, and Marie Fromherz of Reno, Nev.; and 10 grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to his church or to the Kaiser Hospice program.

Edwin Moshberger
PORTLAND -- No formal funeral services will be held for Edwin Moshberger, 91, who died July 10, 2001, in Portland.
A time of remembrance will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. July 29 at Smyrna United Church of Christ, where he was a member. The Marion County Citizens Band, of which he was a charter member, will play at 3 p.m.
Mr. Moshberger was born Aug. 15, 1909, in Molalla, the son of Albert and Nettie Moshberger, and he had lived in Molalla most of his life. He had been a farmer, The Oregonian carrier, and a custodian at Ninety-One School in the Canby School District.
His wife, Orva, whom he married in 1935, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his daughters, Linda Wanner and Lela Wanner, both of Canby, and Diane Hayes of Ketchikan, Alaska; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Lloyd D. Johnson
Lloyd Dean Johnson of Canby died July 12, 2001, at his Canby home. He was 73.
At his request, a graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at Zion Memorial Park Mausoleum.
He was born Oct. 25, 1927, at San Mateo, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Evelyn Norris on Nov. 19, 1949. He lived in Canby since 1959, and worked for Crown Zellerbach for 36 years.
He was a life member of Oregon City Elks Lodge No. 1189, and was a member of Canby American Legion Post No. 122.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Canby; son Wayne D. and his wife Dee Linde Johnson of Canby; his daughter Karen E. and her husband Greg J. Hall of Aurora; his sister Dorelle Aasland of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Brian A. and Jennifer E. Hall.

Paul F. Stahl
Paul Frederick Stahl died July 11, 2001, in Canby. He was 78.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Fellowship Bible Church in Oregon City. Canby Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
He was born April 4, 1923, in Cook Port, Pa. He has lived in Canby since 1962. He worked for Stutzman Farms for awhile, and for Satrum Farms for nine years, before retiring in 1985.
He was a member of Fellowship Bible Church and he delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. He married Lois Hostettler in 1950.
He is survived by his wife; son Brian Stahl and daughter Beth Alexis, both of Molalla; sister Maebelle Stahl of northeast Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren.

Lahoma B. Roberts
AURORA -- Aurora resident Lahoma Beatrice Roberts, 73, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Canby Funeral Chapel. Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Roberts was born June 8, 1928, in Coalgate, Okla. She was raised and attended school in Oklahoma and California. She came to the Aurora-Canby area in 1966.
She had worked as a cook and waitress in California and for various restaurants in Oregon.
She was a past member of the Eagles Lodge. She enjoyed going to Reno.
The former Lahoma Keeler, she married Joseph "Dave" Roberts in 1966 and he survives.
Also surviving are her sons, Harold Lydy of Oregon City, Darold Lydy of Molalla and Norman Lydy of Coos Bay; daughters, Janella Sills of Gresham and Delinda Roberts of Aurora; a sister, Betty Silva of Lemoore, Calif.; brothers, Roy Taylor of Lemoore, Wendell Taylor of Tupelo, Okla., Delton Taylor of Los Banos, Calif., and Ray Taylor, of California; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gilman Satrum
CANBY -- Longtime area resident Gilman Satrum, 92, died May 12, 2002, at Benedictine Nursing Center in Mt. Angel.
He was born to Andrew and Sina Satrum on May 4, 1910, in Canton, S.D., the third of nine children. He moved to Hansford, Texas with his parents and two older siblings when he was still an infant. He lived in Texas until 1925 when the family moved to Oregon. He lived in Canby, Aurora and Silverton.
He married Myrtle Thorkildson in Silverton on Sept. 4, 1937.
After their marriage, the couple moved to Portland where he worked in the shipyards during World War II. After the war, he started logging with two of his brothers and eventually bought a home in Wheeler, where he worked for Buck Mountain Logging Co. until 1950.
He then bought 50 acres near Molalla, where he began his great love of farming. He and his wife farmed together for about 30 years before retiring and moving to Canby.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years; two daughters, Marilyn Thompson of Canby and Linda McMullen of Amity; a son, Jim, of Molalla; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Sally Dybvad and Peggy Wrolstad, both of Canby.
Viewing will be at Canby Funeral Chapel from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 15.
A celebration of life will be held at Zoar Lutheran Church, 190 S.W. 3rd Ave., in Canby at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16. A private family committal will be held at Zoar Lutheran Cemetery on South Barlow Road at 2 p.m.

Amelia R. Feller
WOODBURN -- A funeral Mass was held at St. Luke Catholic Church in Woodburn on Monday, May 13, 2002, for Woodburn resident Amelia Rose (Tritschler) Feller. She died May 9, at the age of 84.
She was born July 13, 1917, in Portland. She married James "Barney" Feller in 1936, and he preceded her in death in 1987.
In addition to farming, she had served as the Donald city recorder and was the former owner of Broadacres Tavern in Broadacres.
She was a member of St. Luke Parish, Catholic Daughters and the Donald Historical Society. She also had studied German at Chemeketa Community College in Salem.
She is survived by her daughters, Marion Hovet and Jean Anderson, both of California, and Amelia "Lia" Halter of Woodburn; a son, James, of California; a sister, Dorothy Scherette of Salem; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Myke Ward
MARIETTA, Ga. -- Former Oregon resident and 1972 graduate of North Marion High School, Myke Ward died in Marietta, Ga. on May 8, 2002. He was 47.
He was born June 24, 1954, the son of M. Bernadine and Pete Ward. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from Portland State University and was the director of Network Engineering for Airgate PCS in Marietta.
He is survived by his wife, Lanette; a son, J.C. and a daughter, Kate, all of Marietta; brothers, Patrick of Canby and Dennis of Hubbard; and his mother, Bernadine of Gervais.
His father preceded him in death in 1991.
Funeral services will be held May 18, in Georgia.

Marian A. Ehli
SALEM -- Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 14, at Keizer Funeral Chapel for former Canby resident Marian A. Ehli, 87.
Born on a farm near Crofton, Neb., on Jan. 5, 1915, she died May 9, 2002. She moved to Oregon in 1939 with her husband and three small children. During her early years in Oregon she owned and managed the Top O' Hill restaurant near Aurora.
She married Ralph Ehli in 1952, and the family moved to Eugene, where the couple owned and operated a truck stop cafe, various rental properties and built a small subdivision on the outskirts of town.
In 1967, she and her husband owned and operated Rambler City and a used car lot until retirement. Since that time she had been a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening and canning.
She resided in Salem for about 35 years, returning in January 2002, after spending the past three years in Redding, Calif.
Surviving are her son, Melvin Schwartz of Salem; daughters, Janice A. Winrich of Windsor, Calif., and Dorothy L. Rohnstock of Redding, Calif.; sisters, Irene Collins of Canby and Eleanor Nielsen of Bloomfield, Neb.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death, as well as a brother and a sister.

Sarah Summers
WILSONVILLE -- Funeral services were held Monday, May 13, 2002, at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Wilsonville for Sarah C.M. Summers. She died May 10, at the age of 91.
She was born Jan. 25, 1911, at Siloom Springs, Ark., and married her husband, Joseph, in Arkansas in 1935.
A former preschool teacher, she enjoyed sewing and writing poetry.
She had lived in Canby, Aurora and West Linn. Burial will be at Canby's Zion Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Sara Dunlop; a sister, Edith Dougherty; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death in 2000.
