Eugene K. Aiu, 1881 - ?

     Attorney at law and real estate dealer, Honolulu and Kapaa, Kauai. Born at Kailua, Hawaii, Kingdom of Hawaii Jan 15, 1881; son of Lau Sung Iu and Victoria Piimauna; married Mary Kainuwaiaoao (deceased) in Honolulu July 15, 1908; three children Eugene K Jr, Margaret and Mary. Educated at public school at Kailua Hawaii.  Began as clerk, Kona Trading Co, Kailua 1898-1901; salesman Aiea Plantation store.  Aiea Oahu Feb 1902-May 1904; clerk district court and first circuit court at Honolulu June 1904-Sept 1910; practiced law since Sept 1910.  Member House of Representatives Territory of Hawaii, 1915-1916.  Member Hawaii Chapter No 1, Order of Kamehameha and Hale o Na Alii o Hawaii.

George Higgins Akau, 9 Nov 1884 - 22 Mar 1951

     George Higgins Akau, merchant, Hilo, Hawaii.  Born in Hilo, Nov 9, 1884 and was the son of James Awai Akau (1846-1888) and Emelia Kekaiaulu Higgins Akau (28 Sept 1866, Kona; died 27 Aug 1919 in Hilo, daughter of George Wells Higgins and Kaolua Napela, she remarried

     Hip Lui).   George had siblings: Adair Akau (1882-1882), Mercy Kananiaukona Akau (1886-1973) and Adnah Kauhiwai Akau (1888-1974).

     He married Caroline "Carrie" de Silva June 15, 1910, Honolulu (born 4 Oct 1883, Honolulu; she died July 1975, buried at Diamond Head Memorial Park, Honolulu). Carrie was the daughter of John Gomes de Silva and Mary Rodrigues.   They have two children: George (b ca 1913) and Eleanor Emelia (b 16 March 1915). 

     Clerk and salesman in the store of E N Holmes, Hilo for 12 years and became manager of the Peoples Store, Hilo.  George died 22 Mar 1951, buried Diamond Head Memorial Park, Honolulu.

Arthur Akai Akina, 6 Oct 1886 - ?

Arthur Akai Akina, commission merchant of Kohala Hawaii.  Born at Kohala on October 6, 1886.  He was the son of Goo Chin Akina (born June 1838, China, came in 1869.   Goo Chin was a merchant in 1900 census; he died 1913, is buried Wainaia Cemetery, Kapaau) and Maiaka Kalua Akina (1856-1893, buried Wainaia cemetery, Kapaau) . He had siblings: Aoe (born Oct 1875, married Robert Shirley Mowry, 6 Apr 1914, Honolulu); Aiu (born Sept 1877); Clement Asong (born 11 July 1889, Ailuii, Hawaii -1953,  Kapaau, married Lucy Agnes ---, buried Wainaia Cemetery, Kapaau)    He was educated in public school, Mills Institute 1900 and St Louis College 1907. Arthur married Norah Leialoha Keawe Nov 16, 1913, Kohala, Hawaii.  Arthur and Norah  had one son Arthur.

Arthur was office assistant in the plantation department of Bishop & Co, Bankers, Honolulu from 1907-1908.  Then bookkeeper at the Hawi Mill and Plantation Company's store, Kohala, Hawaii from 1908-1911.  Asst bookkeeper and private secretary in the main office of the plantation, having the management of the Hawi Garage;  manager of the plantation's stores at Hawai, Hoea, and Puakea, Hawaii.  Resigned to go into business alone on March 1917.  Elected County supervisor, Hawaii  County 1917-1919.  Served Co I Infantry, 2nd regiment HNG, two years with honorable discharge.  He was a member of the Kileauea Lodge, Masons, Scottish Rite bodies and Mystic Shrine.  By 1940 Norah was a principal at a elementary school, and Arthur was a deputy Sheriff.

James Kopo Ako, 11 Aug 1882 - 12 Aug 1939

James Kopo Ako, Supervisor of County of Hawaii, Kailua, Hawaii.  Born at Kailua, North Kona, Hawaii, August 11, 1882.  He was the son of Chew Chong and Lehela Kailiuaua Pahee.  He died 12 August 1939 and was buried at St Michaels Catholic Cemetery, Kailua Kona

James was educated in the public schools and the Royal School in Honolulu.  He began working as a clerk in John Kawlemakule's store and sub-agent of public lands in the  3rd land district, Kailua, North Kona.  He was appointed Deputy Tax Assessor and Collector, North Kona District from 1905-1915.  He was assistant postmaster of Kailua from 1905-1910.  James was Clerk of Third Circuit Court, Territory of Hawaii from 1910-1912.  He was elected Supervisor from the second representative district, County of Hawaii.  He was re-elected 1917-1919.  He was a member of the Seaside Club, Kamehameha Lodge and Forresters.

He married Margaret K Ahana, 22 Dec 1901, North Kona, Hawaii (born 5 July 1879, died 2 July 1962, buried at St Michaels Catholic Cemetery, Kailua Kona).   James had children from his first marriage: James Jr, (born 24 Sept 1902, North Kona; died 7 June 1915, Queens Hospital, ), Philip A (born 25 September 1904, North Kona),  Josephine K. (born 8 March 1908, North Kona).

James was also married to Lily Kanohalani (who was born 3 Sept 1897, Kailua, Hawaii and died 25 June 1961, Kailua).   Lily is shown in the 1920 census as a lodger.  Lily was a weaving teacher.  From James' second marriage he had:  Herbert (born ca 1918), Elmer (born ca 1919), Eleanor (born ca 1921), Rachel (born ca 1923), Lily Jane (born ca 1924), Valentine (born ca 1926), Raynold (born ca 1927), Emma Louisa (born ca 1929).

Frank Moir Anderson, sugar plantation manager, Paauhau, Hawaii; born 23 Nov 1882, Kincardineshire, Scotland; son of William and Agnes (Moir) Anderson; married Lilian Margaret Fentiman, 25 Sept 1909, at Hilo Hawaii.  Three children: Frank Moir, John William and Albert Fentiman. Attended public schools in Scotland and a number of years after coming to America studied business and accounting through correspondence sshools.  Was mail carrier 1894-1896; farm teamster 1896-1904; employed by Onomea Sugar Co Papaikou, Hawaii as field luna 1904; promoted to various positionsand became chief accountant 1910; naturalized 1912; manager Paauhau Sugar Co since 1917.  Activbely interested in sports and civic matters; organizer and president Hamakua Civic Club; Capt National Guard of Hawaii, Papaikou 1916; member Kilauea Lodge #330, F & A.M; Kalani Lodge of Perfection, Hilo; Honolulu Consistory #1; Aloha Temple A A O N M S, Honolulu. Joseph G Andrews, Hilo, Hawaii.  Born in Kaupo, Maui, 18 Nov 1887; son of Christian and Louisa (Poohiwi) Andrews; education public schools, St Louis College Honolulu.  Married Elizabeth Hulihee at Waiohinu, Kau, Hawaii 21 Apr 1907; children Joseph, Hubert, Agnes, Adrian, Fabian, Thaddeus.  Assistant principal and principal, Catholic private school, Waiohinu 1906-1909; asst timekeeper, construction crew, Hilo Railroad 1910-1913; territorial homestead ranger Puna and North and South Hilo Districts, Hawaii 1913-1915; territorial sub-agent of public lands, County of Hawaii, since Nov 1915.  Agent for Farm Loan Board of Hawaii since July 1, 1919.  Member National Guard of Hawaii 1906-1906; president Francis Council 573, Y M I 1914-1915, Democrat.

Francis Kemakui Aona, 4 Jul 1893 - ?

Francis Kemakui Aona, legislator and merchant, Kealakekua, Hawaii; born Kailua, Hawaii July 4, 1893, son of H and Anna Aona.  Educated Kamehameha School, Honolulu, graduating June 16, 1912; married Mae Enfoor Akui, Napoopoo, Hawaii 17 Aug 1914.  Three children: Eleanor, Ruby, Francis.  Began as a carpenter one year; clerk H Hackfield and Co; Napoopoo Hawaii 1913.  Entered automobile rent service 1914; county garage keeper and driver, South Kona Road Dept 1916-1920; was chief clerk, county engineers office in Hilo and clerk to board of harbor commissioners and public works office, Hilo 1917-1918; resigned; served as supply sgt Co C, 2nd Hawn, Infantry US Army June 1918-1919.  Appointed member tax appeal court, June 12, 1920, resigned; elected Representative to Territorial Legislature Nov 1920, serving special session 1920, regular session 1921; manager Aona store, Kealakekua Hawaii Jan-July 1921; incorporator president and manager Kona Supply Co, Ltd July 1921.

Futoshi Arakawa, 9 Apr 1891 - ?

Futoshi Arakawa, Civil Engineer of Hilo, Hawaii.  Futoshi was born April 9, 1891, Kula, Maui and was the son of Kohei (died before 1930)and Chiyo Masaki (born ca 1850 in Japan, was still living in 1930 census and living with Futoshi and family) Arakawa. Futoshi had a sister Machiyo, who was still single in 1930 and living with Futoshi and his family. 

He was education at Hilo High School and Leland Stanford Junior University, AB 1914.  He was a civil engineer and architect at Hilo Hawaii since 1915.  he was the Organizer of the Japanese-American Citizens Association of Hawaii, the first of its kind to be started in the United States and encourages Hawaiian born Japanese to become true American citizens.  He was president of this organization since 1915.

Futoshi married Haruko about 1920-1921.  She was born about 1899 in Japan.  They had children: David, (born ca 1921); Marion (born ca 1923); Eva (born ca 1925); June (born ca 1928).

Luther Stine Aungst, 26 Oct 1862 - 1953

Luther Stine Aungst, businessman, Holualoa, Hawaii.  Born at Linglestown PA, Oct 26, 1862; son of Daniel and Amanda (Stine) Aungst.  Grammar school education.  Married Emma L Schoen at Hilo, Hawaii, Feb 1, 1896.  Three children Edith A, Elmer L and Wallace M.  Entered telephonebusiness, Des Moines, Iowa 1879-1882, similar work Philadelphia 1882-1886; San Francisco and Los Angeles 1886-1890; Hamakua, Hawaii, Honolulu and Kona Hawaii since 1890.  At present supt Hawaii Telephone Co.  Member Kilauea Lodge #330, F & A M, Hilo; Excelsior Lodge #1 I O O F, Mystic Lodge #2, K of P, Polynesia Enc #1.   He was on the grandjury for the October term of the US District Court for 1903. 

Known as the man who "wired" the Big Island, hired to improve Hamakua and South Kohala Telephone in 1890.  He used mules to drag telephone poles across lava flows.  Aungst installed a line from Hilo to Pau, and across Kona to North Holaha.  Secured franchise from government for Kona-Kau Telephone and Telegraph (1892-1932).  He retired in 1932 at the age of 70.  Kona-Kau Telephone & Telegraph merged into Hawaii Telephone Company. 

His description in Aug1889: 5'6" tall, sloping forehead, grey eyes, light hair, fair complexion.  The description is from a US Passport application.  He died 1953 and is buried at the Christ Church Episcopal Cemetery, Kealakekua, Hawaii, Hawaii County.

Herbert A R Austin, 17 Jan 1890 - ?

Civil Engineer of Honolulu.  Born in Hilo, Hawaii, Jan 17, 1890.  He was the son of Herbert Clark and Marian Robertson Austin; grandson of Stafford L Austin, Lt Gov Island of Hawaii from 1856-1857 and Circuit Judge of Hawaii from 1857-1862 and 1886-1896.  Married Beatrice Hancock in Hilo, 21 June 1919.  One child: Jean Margaret.  Educated Hilo and Honolulu public schools. Oahu College 1909.  Bornell University, 1913.  Assistant Engineer Hawaii Loan Fund Commission 1913, Jr Engineer USGS, water resources branch Hawaii District 1913-1917.

John William Bains, 12 Jul 1880 - ?

     John William Bains, secretary, Hilo, Hawaii.  Born Wreck Bay, NSQ Australia July 12, 1880.  He was the son of John and Esther  Elizabeth Mary (Watts) Bains married Jean Jeffrey in Honolulu Jan 11, 1911.  Six children Jean Esther, John Arthur, Jeffrey Vernon, Juanita Daisy, William Henry, Manono.  Educated at Australian public schools, leaving school in 1893.  On Sydney Daily Telegraph until 1903.  China Mail Hong Kong 1903-1908; Shanghai Times 1908-1910; represented Shanghai journalists, Manila Carnival 1909; arrived Honolulu, joined Honolulu Starr 1910; secretary Hilo Railway Co 1911-1914; purchasing agent Oahu Railway Company 1914-1916; returned to Hilo for secretarial work and since that time has been employed on each of the Hilo newspapers.  At present secretary Hilo Board of Trade, Industrial Accident Board of Hawaii (since 1916); Hawaii Island Welfare Bureau 1920; Kilauea Council BSA since 1919  Naturalized 1917.  Was in charge of secretarial and office work, selective draft, Hawaii County during war.

David K Baker, lawyer and surveyor, district magistrate North Kona Hawaii; born in Makawao, Maui 11 Sept 1861.  Educated Royal School and Punahou Academy; clerk in Custom House Honolulu 1885-1893; helper T H Davies & Co hardware Dept 1893-1897; principal Honaunau public school Hawaii 1900-1904; deputy sheriff South Kona 1905-1908; Senator Territorial Legislature 1909-1916; district magistrate North Kona 1917 to date.  Studied law with Messers Castle, Ashgord and Kinney, Honolulu and admitted to bar 1907.  Spouse was Esther Kalaukoa, 14 June 1884, Honolulu. Children:  George Kaluhi Baker born 22 Dec 1885, Honolulu; Frederick W Baker, born 9 Feb 1889, Honolulu; David K Baker Jr, b ca 1903; William M Baker, born ca 1909.  He died 6 Oct 1927, Kalaupapa, Molokai.

Charles Eugene Banks, 3 Apr 1852 - ?

Charles Eugene Banks, author, journalist of Hilo HI.  Born in Clinton County IA, 3 Apr 1852.  He was the son of Seth Lee and Sarah (Hubbell) Banks.  Married Carroline Wyatt 3 Apr 1892, Chicago, IL.  Raised on farm and worked during youth as a clerk in country store and later as traveling salesman.  He entered journalistic career as newspaper reporter and later publisher American Commercial Traveler, Chicago.  Many many details on his periodicals and publications in the article.

He  and wife Caroline apparently came to Hawaii on the ship Makura on 23 April 1919.  He is shown employed by Post Intelligence Newspaper, Seattle WA at the time.

Manuel Charles Baptiste, 26 Aug 2897 - 2 Feb 1958

Manuel Baptiste, banker of Honokaa Hawaii.  Born 26 Aug 1897 at Honomu Hawaii.  Son of Antone  Baptiste and Anna De Medeiros Cabrinha.  He was educated at  Brother's School, Hilo and St Louis College, Honolulu graduating in 1916.  He married Millicent Stroup in Hilo on 1 Mar 1919. Children: Millicent Marie born ca 1921, Charles R born ca 1922, Everdien, born ca 1931,.  Began career as head bookkeeper for Wall, Nichols Co in Hilo from July-Dec 1916.  Stenographer with People's Bank Ltd, Hilo working in various departments and becoming asst cashier June 1920.  Became cashier Honokaa Branch of the People's Bank Lt, Aug 1920.  Enlisted in the Students' Army Training Corps, College of Hawaii, and honorably discharged Dec 1918.  Member Foresters YMI St Louis College Alumnae.  American Legion and Vice President Honokaa Social Club. Auditor for Hamakua Civic Club. Died 2 Feb 1958, Honolulu, Buried National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu.

William Henry Barringer, 8 Jul 1888 - ?

Civil Engineer, Hilo Hawaii.  Born in Stockton CA 8 July 1888.  He was the son of Edward J and Martha E McGurk Barringer.  His education was at St Joseph's Academy and St Mary's College in Oakland CA and the University of CA.  He married Lucille Kopa, 27 Dec 1910, Kohala, HI.  Children: Etha K (born ca 1912); Ronald A (born ca 1914); Wilma H (born ca 1917); Lucile (born ca 1919).  He was asst engineer S P Railway 1907-08.  Topographer USGS California 1908-09; Hawaii 1909-11.  Engineer for Hilo RR Co 1912-1913 and Hawaii Loan Fund Commission 1913-1914; for public works dept and  harbor commission Territory of Hawaii 1914-1919; deputy county engineer Hawaii County 1919-1920; County Engineer since 1 Aug 1920.  Chairman of Hawaii Loan Fund Commission.  Served in National Guard of Hawaii 1915-1918 with rank of Lt.  Chancellor commander Hilo lodge #7 K of P; esteemed lecturing knight Hilo Lodge #759, BPOE; member of A O Foresters Hilo Board of Trade, Ad Club and Hawaii Automobile Club.

Paul Heinrich Bartels, 18 Oct 1874 - 29 Jun 1946

Paul Henry (Heinrich) Bartels, businessman, Honokaa Hawaii.  Born at Cologne Germany 18 Oct 1874.  He was the son of Henry August and Agnes Schmidt Bartels.  Married Elvira Charlotte Lilinoe Hapai at Hilo, 15 Oct 1900.  Children: Paul H Jr (born ca 1905-deceased by 1920), Henry August (born ca 1907) and Helene Lilinoe (born ca 1908).  He left his native country in Feb 1892 to join his eldest brother in show manufacturing business in Boston MA.  Held various positions there, last being bookkeeper.  Came to Hawaii due to health in 1898.  He entered the firm of H Hackfeld and Co in Honolulu and was employed by this firm and later American Factors Ltd from then until Oct 1918.  Last positions being asst mgr and mgr of Hilo and Kailua branches.  Became cashier and bookkeeper Honokaa Sugar Co, Pacific Sugar Mill and Hawaiian Irrigation Co Ltd 1919.  Was appointed asst manager of these firms Feb 16, 1921.  Member Hilo Lodge No 759 BPOE.

He died 29 June 1946, Hilo. Buried Homelani, Memorial Park, Hilo.  His wife was born 18 June 1876, died 19 June 1941, Hilo, buried Homelani Memorial Park.  Her parents were George Washington Akau Hapai and Harriet Rebecca Kamakanoenoe Sniffen.

Eugene Santos Capellas, school principal, Hilo, Hawaii, born Ponta, Delgada, St Miguel, Azores, Feb 26, 1880.  He was the son of Manoel S and Frances (Costa) Capellas.  He emigrated 1888 according to the 1910 census.  Married Eliza Dos Reis, at Wailuku, Maui July 15, 1903. Her parents were J A Dos Reis and Maria C.  Children: Dorothy Norma (born 6 May 1904, Hilo), Cecilia Pauline (who married --- Muirhead) (born 26 Jan 1906, Hilo), Elizabeth Bonaventure (born ca 1909), Eugene S Jr (born ca 1912), Laurence Joseph (born ca 1914), Thelma Frances (born ca 1916), Phylis Claire (born ca 1918), Donald Harding (b ca 1922), Aileen (born ca 1925).  Educated in grammar schools, and took correspondence course in law.  Asst teacher, Kenalahou School, Kula Maui 1897-1901; principle Hakalau School, 1901 to date; active in development of the school during this period; chairman of Republican County Committee Hawaii since Oct 1918.  Treasurer 1920 republican campaign in Hawaii County. Served in Territorial Senate and was electred president in his first term.   President Hilo Portugese Savings and Investment Co, Hilo.  Member Hilo Teachers Union, secretary 15 years.  St Antonio Benevolent Soviety, Honolulu; Court Mauna Kea A.O.F;  Senior warden; order of Owls, Nest No 1865; Exec Committee Kilauea Council, B S A; secretary and treasurer Hawaii Education Assn. Onetime president of the Territorial Senate.   Died 16 Aug 1962.  Buried Homelani Memorial Park, Hilo.

Xavier Louis Helbush, 30 Jan 1866 - 22 May 1956

Xavier Louis Helbush.  Hilo, Hawaii.  Born Antwerp, Belgium Jan 30, 1866.  Died 22 May 1956, Hawaii.  Son of John Baptiste and Rosalie (Groeninck) Helbush.  He married Mary Mattos Dec 1890 (she was born in Portugal Sept 1868).  Dagmar Anderson October 1908.  Ten children:

Andrew Pearl (born Dec 1891, Hawaii), Ernest Emil (born 2 Feb 1893, Hawaii), Rose M (born March 1894, Hawaii, died young), George H  (born April 1895, Hawaii), Henry W (born April 1896, Hawaii; married Belena Sousa), by first marriage.  Rosalee (born ca 1907, Hawaii), Violet D (born ca 1913, Hawaii), Frederick L (born ca 1915, Hawaii), Eugene Anderson (born 1916, Hawaii), Eloise K (born ca 1918, Hawaii), Hilda P by second marriage.  

He graduated Royal Athenaeum, Antwerp in 1884.  Law office in Antwerp 1884-1887.  Traveled to Canada, United States, Panama, Peru, Chile 1887-1889.  Arrived Hawaii August 1889.  Overseer Hawaii plantations 1889-1895.  Express business for himself in Hilo, later general merchandise, business firm of Potemkin and Helbush 1895-1909.  With Hilo RR Company now Hawaii Con. Ry Co since 1909.  Has been interested for several years in cooperative associations and in 1919 became president of Rochdale Cooperative Assn.  Practices and teaches drugless healing and a great believer in theosophy (sic).  Member Hilo K of P Lodge, Owls Lodge, Hilo.

It appears from a muster roll for the Marine Corp in NY roster list for 1888, which shows a Xavier Louis Hellebosch.  May be him. He was on the SS Mohican, and went to Ecuador.

James Harold Henderson, 11 Jan 1876 - Jun 1965

James Harold Henderson.  Born Aberdeenshire, Scotland Jan 11, 1876.  Died June 1965, Hawaii. 

Son of John and Ann (Ogston) Henderson.  Educated in Aberdeenshire schools.  Married Lydia Lei Macy in Hilo Oct 23, 1909 (she was born June 11, 1890).  Four children: Rebecca Lei, James Harold (born ca 1913, Hawaii) and Helen Lamb (born 1 Nov 1918, Hilo, Hawaii),

John (born ca 1923, Hawaii).  James was naturalized 6 Nov 1906 in First Circuit Court, Hilo according to the passenger list to CA.

Came to Hawaii in 1900 and began as a blacksmith at Wainaku, Hawaii, remaining six years.  He is shown as blacksmith in 1900 census.  Team Luna Hakalau 1906-1910,  Head Luna.   Hawaii Mill Co 1910-1912;  appointed manager of same to succeed W H C Campbell, resigned

1 Oct 1912.  Purchased Hawaii Mill from its owners H Hackfield and Company Ltd Sept 1915 and has since been general manager and owner. 

Appointed member Fair Commission of Hawaii June 26, 1917; chief registrar 8th precinct, 1st representative district Jully 21, 1917.  Member Hawaii Promotion Committee (Hawaii Tourist Bureau) 1917-1921. Plantation Manager, Hilo, Hawaii in 1920.  In 1930 census he is a manager for an electric company. Was member and secretary of Hawaii Draft Board Division 1.  Fire Warden, Hilo District.  Life Member and Exalted Ruler BPOE #759, Hilo; Treasurer of the Kilauea

Lodge #330 F & A M.  Member of Aloha Temple, Mystic Shrine.  Commercial Club Honolulu, Hilo Yacht Club.

He went many times to San Francisco, San Pedro, Washington and Canada, there may be a familial connection in those locations.

John Hind, 01 Aug 1858 - 01 Aug 1933

John Hind, sugar planter and plantation manager, Hawi Hawaii.  Born Aug 1, 1858 at Jarrow-on-Tyne, England; died 1 Aug 1933, Honolulu, Hawaii.  Son of Robert Robson and Mary (Unwin) Hind; received common school education. He came from England in 1864 Married Ella Renton (deceased in 1886) in Brooklyn, NY 1885.   Married Alice Renton in Kohala, Hawaii 1889 (she was born Oct 1867, Hawaii; her father was from Nova Scotia and her mother from the Isle of Jersey).  Children: Robert Renton (born 1885), John Henry (born Dec 1890, Hawaii), Oswald Arthur (born June 1891, Hawaii), Muriel (born May 1893, Hawaii), James Unwin (born Jan 1895, Hawaii).  Manager Hawi Mill and Plantation since 1884.  According to the 1900 census he was the Plantation Manager.  By 1930 census he had removed to Honolulu and was a "sugar expert".  Was president in the following corporations: Hawi Mill and Plantation Co Ltd, Kohala Ditch Co, Hawaii Railway Co (Mahnkona), Kehena Ditch Co, Captain Cook Coffee Company, Hind Plantation Company.  President of Puakea Plantation Company and Homestead Plantation Company.  Member Honolulu Lodge #409, F & A M, Commercial Club, Oahu Country Club, Pacific Club.

Morris Louisson, Mar 1825 - 

Moritz/Morris Louisson born March 1825 in Schwerzenz, Posen, Poland, he arrived in Honolulu in the late 1850s.  He married Therese Guenther in 1862.  She was born July 1847, in Germany and she died 1937.  He died 29 Mar 1902 and is buried in Honolulu. They are both buried at the O'ahu Cemetery in Honolulu.  He was naturalized 1 Nov 1856 in San Francisco County.  His obituary says he came to America in the early 1840s,though it may be closer to 1850s.  They are listed in the 1900 census as having been married for 38 years.  Therese shows she had a total of 7 child, 6 were living. Son Henry Louisson (born Jan 1866, California, a rancher) was head of household at Hamakua, Hawaii. Brother Abe L (born Jan 1864 in California, a rancher, was also in the household) as well as Morris andTherese. 1900 census shows Morris and Therese came to Hawaii in 1866 and that he was naturalized. A servant, Sataro Inada, who was born Mar 1866 in Japan was also in the household. 


Louisson Brothers Coffee Mill ca 1925

Abe and Henry formed the Louisson Brothers Coffee Mill on Hamakua about 1897, which had about 200 acres of coffee and a mill as of 1903.  300 acres by 1905. It was visited by writer Jack London and his wife Charmian before 1918.

Henry Clay was born 4 Jan 1866, California; married Rita ----; he died 27 Nov 1945, San Francisco, CA buried Forest Lawn, Glendale CA

Lahela was born 1 Jan 1868 and died 16 March 1859. (Lahela was Hawaiian for Rachel - she was the first Jewish girl to be born in Hawaii). She married #1 Jacob Mouritz and #2 ----- Lippman.Belle/Isabelle Louisson, was born 5 Oct 1870, in Hawaii who married Gustave Simon; died 22 Sept 1963, San Francisco, California.

Samuel Louisson, was born 16 Nov 1871, Honolulu; died 14 October1895 in Honolulu, Hawaii, buried O'ahu Cemetery.

William was born 12 Jan 1874 and died 25 Jan 1944, buried Forest Lawn, Glendale CA., married Emma M ---.

Julius Lester was born 28 May1876, Honolulu and died ca 30 Oct 1876, San Mateo, CA.

Moritz/Morris was a nephew of A S Grinbaum.  A S Grinbaum opened a mercantile firm of M S Grinbaum and Co., among the first export and import firms of Hawaii which opened about 1866.

Morris served as President of the German Club and was also a member of the Excelsior Lodge.His will mentions that he is a resident of Honolulu, Hawaii but at the time he wrote the will was temporarily residing in San Francisco County.  His executors were his wife, son Abe Louisson and friends A Gartenberg and Samuel Damon both of Honolulu. The estate was to go to his wife and children and mentions Henry, Abe and Belle.  Mentioned Coffee plantation known as the Pohakea, Hawaii.  And Mentions mercantile books of the corporation  of M S Grinbaum & Co, Ltd.  The will was written 11 July 1901.  Order of probate for the estate of Morris Louisson was issued 26 May 1902.

Rev David B. Lyman, 28 Jul 1803 - 1884

David B Lyman was an early American Missionary to Hawaii.  He was born 28 July 1803 in Hartford, CT, son of David Lyman and Rhoda Phelps Belden.  He married Sarah Joiner in 1831 and they sailed a few days later to Hawaii from Massachusetts in the Fifth Company of Missionaries.  They arrived in Honolulu in May 1832 and were assigned to the Mission at Hilo under Rev Joseph Goodrich.

They had eight children:  David Brainerd (1833-1836), Henry Munson (1835-1904), Frederick Swartz (1837-1918), David Brainerd (1840-1914), Rufus Anderson (1842-1910), Ellen Elizabeth (1845-1868), Francis Ogden (1847-1915), Emma Washburn (1849-1934).

The Lymans founded the Hilo Boarding School in 1836.  The school was founded with a grant of $500.00.  They started with 60-70 students. In 1838, the students were put to work building a new wood framed building for the school and a house for the Lymans.  Mrs Lyman opened a school for girls in 1839.  Students had their own garden in which they grew their own food, and raised some cash crops to help with expenses.  By 1840 thousands of pounds of molasses and sugar were being produced. Rev Lyman retired from the school in 1873.

Sarah Joiner Lyman kept a diary for many years including notations on earthquakes and volcano eruptions.

Lyman House is now a fascinating museium.
