Fred Kinsaburo Makino founded The Hawaii Hochi in 1912 “to serve as the voice of the Japanese workers”. The first issue was published on 7 Dec 1912.1 His biography can be found at the Discover Nikkei site.2 The biography was originally published in commemoration of The Hawaii Hochi, Ltd’s 75th anniversary in 1987.
The fascinating biography of the founder of The Hawaii Hochi, Fred Kinsaburo Makino. He was born in Yokohama, Japan on 28 Aug 1877. His mother was Kin Makino from Kanagawa Prefecture and his father was Joseph Higgenbotham, a merchant/trader from Manchester, England. In a time when there were so few mixed marriages anywhere, it seems he and his 3 brothers and 2 sisters grew up without much problems in Yokohama.
He immigrated to Hawaii in join his brother in operating a small store in 1899. Fred Makino worked on two plantations and moved to Honolulu and opened Makino Drug Store in 1901. In 1912 he began publishing The Hawaii Hochi (the only Japanese language daily still being published in Hawaii). He worked on the behalf of Japanese immigrants throughout his career. He supported the many labor disputes, the Japanese language school controversy, and citizenship rights. Fred Kinsaburo Makino died in 1953 at the age of 76.3 Read his biography at Discover Nikkei.
